Falling In Love With Dayton, Ohio

August 9, 2015 By Robyn Warner

526127_479771762042463_1093869258_nWhen I moved here from New Jersey, the plan was to stay for 6 months then head to Philly… that was nearly a decade ago.  Life happened and I ended up stuck, between a rock and a gem city.  I have spent many nights in the last 10 years dreaming about the day I could leave this town.  But since moving into a new apartment in the Oregon District, something truly unexpected happened- I found myself falling in love with Dayton, Ohio.

As I walked from brewery to brewery, soaked in the  summer sun on various patios, and bashed on the unique & eclectic cuisine surrounded by some of the best friends I have ever had, it occurred to me that perhaps I had been missing out all those years.

dub pub fire
My first day as a resident began with a Uhaul and ended with a shot at a Tiki bar with good friends and beautiful strangers.  I watched the Kentucky derby at the Trolley Stop, then drank some local beers at Warped Wing.  Ermal’s- all day, err day.  Then we hit the Dub Pub and sat by the fire on the rooftop patio, watching the sun set over our district.  From there we headed to Tumbleweed, where we leaned over the New Orleans style balcony and watched the diverse crowds of people get their Saturday night started.  It was over to Ned Peppers after that to sit on bar stools that swing from the ceiling and the opportunity to have a cocktail with sand beneath my feet.

And then, just before coherence left me, I walked three blocks home and was in bed before the spins started.  CRUSHED IT.  I woke up the next morning and thought to myself, maybe this is right where I belong.  And it had been quite a while since I felt like I was anywhere near that…..

hatter crawlI moved to NJ when I was 11 after being raised in a suburb of Cincinnati (hence my die hard passion for the Bengals and Reds).  I tell people I grew up in NJ because I really did.  From 11 – 22 years old, that is when I became who I am.  Because of this East Coast lifestyle, Dayton never seemed like it suited me.  I felt socially outcast here, but in hindsight it might have been my own doing.  I never really gave this city a chance to impress me because I had a preconceived notion of how people from the Midwest viewed people like me.  I can’t say I was completely wrong, but I certainly wasn’t completely right.

The Oregon District, which is becoming known for its affiliation with hipsters, offers so much mDBC flightore than that, just like the city around it does.  There are four local breweries in walking distance from my porch- how many people in a small town can say that?  Often times I end up eating a jar of pickles on my couch because deciding which amazing restaurant to eat at is just so challenging (Salar? Lily’s? Wheat Penny? Olive? I JUST DON’T KNOW!)  And I have never brunched so hard in my life.  Even the food trucks alone are worth the late night trip down 5th street.  I get home from work at 6 PM on Friday and return at 8 AM on Monday- at no time in between do I operate my vehicle- yet I have been on amazing pub crawls, made new friends at block parties, and been exposed to exceptional local music and art.

dayton_oh_1I have made a ton of mistakes in my life.  I have wasted opportunities and it is safe to say that my life at 32 years old is absolutely not what I thought it would be.  One thing I did right, though, is not make an irrational decision to bail on Dayton before I got to know it… Look at what I would have missed.

Second Show Friday

August 7, 2015 By Nikki Nett

jokersGooooooood Evening Comedy Fans…

24 years ago, a brash, take-no-bs broad from Chicago landed in the little hamlet of Dayton. She thought she’d be here for 90 days, because WHY Dayton? Just quick consulting gig at a comedy club owned by the creator of Pound Puppies. But she stayed a little longer and ended up buying the place. Who could have imagined the next 25 years? Not, Lisa Grigsby .

Wooed by the allure of valet parking at the airport (seriously, I’m not even making that up) Grigs quickly made her mark in Dayton. She brought with her a wealth of knowledge and some pretty badass connections. That dark little room with the caricatures on the walls, low ceilings, and “playful” lobby became a mecca of sorts for comedians at all stages in their career. If you can survive 2nd show Friday in Dayton, you were definitely going to be a star.

jokers julyThe names you know and love now, have most likely worked out their early material in that smoke filled room. When Chris Rock wanted to try some jokes before filming a special, he called Lisa. The rowdy Dayton audiences were yelling “Git ‘Er Done” before Larry The Cable Guy had his own potato chips. Ron White? Yep, he’s the same now as he was decades ago driving a van from gig to gig, including Jokers. When you have The Original Kings Of Comedy on speed dial, you’re probably doing alright for yourself in the comedy world. Bless his heart, D.L. Hughley still has such nice things to say about Lisa, who was unafraid of brutal honesty at any given moment.

“My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana, I said “no, but I want a regular banana later, so … yeah”. ~Mitch Hedburg

She also wasn’t afraid to bring in the “too edgy for the midwest” comics, either. Doug Stanhope? Killed it here. Dave Attell taught the Jokers staff a few things about drinking. Who knew an offensive “woman” comic would wow the conservative Midwest crowd? Grigsby did when she brought Lisa Lampanelli, “The Queen Of Mean”. Though his comedy is PG, the song “Big Butter Jesus” by Heywood Banks, ruffled some feathers.  You’ll likely understand where he was driving to when he first saw that magnificent engineering feat (RIP Butter Jesus).

Mitch Hedberg on stage at Jokers

Mitch Hedberg on stage at Jokers

Choose your favorite comedian doing a set on late night TV, and it’s pretty likely they have been booked by Lisa at some point in their career.  The hit show “Last Comic Standing” has some alumni of that room. (Hi G-Rock Greggy Greg!) Greg Warren was once a corporate dude living the life of an upwardly mobile young professional. Then he quit to do comedy. I’m not sure if he’s thanking or blaming Grigsby at this point, but I bet he’s got a story or two about it.

There may or may not be tales that may or may not be confirmed about future Oscar winners being “politely” asked to leave the building. Shows from future major movie stars being stopped from the back mic when he was being disrespectful to the staff. An SNL star being dropped off somewhere in the middle of general area of the club or hotel (who knows?) for being legitimately nuts. Or intoxicated, whatever.  You know these are the ones you want to hear the most about!

Another thing about Lisa. She was a fierce mama bear when it came to her “kids”. The kids were her staff. There were some that would breeze through that place like a revolving door, but there were others. Those are the ones who stayed. The lifers, affectionately called “f*&%rs” from time to time (yep, that really was a term of endearment). Working there wasn’t easy, you loved it or hated it. You were good at it or awful. You viewed Grigs as Satan, or, like many of us, you viewed her as a friend, mentor, teacher, motivator, “teller-of-truths-you-didn’t-want-to-hear”, and most importantly, the one who would encourage and cheer for your successes the loudest.

There is a lot of life that was lived in that room. Conversations that launched big life decisions, lifelong friendships formed, losses of those gone too soon, mourned. The stories. Oh my word the stories that could be told.

So. Many. Stories. Some good, some not so good, most questionable, but ALL entertaining.

And that’s why you’re reading this. It’s for the stories and what comes next.

Lisa Grigsby

Lisa Grigsby

If you know Lisa Grigsby, then you know, she is NOT one to toot her own horn. She is the brains behind the show. The one managing the creative concepts and logistics of events while inspiring those around her to jump in and give back to the community. Even though she has stepped away from the comedy biz and into the non-profit world, there are some damn good stories to tell. If we wait on her to tell them, we’ll be low on the list of priorities. Behind driving economic development for her adopted community, behind planning functions to further the mission of her favorite charities, and who knows what else.

So…it’s getting done anyway.

Next year marks the 25th Anniversary of the beginning of the Jokers era. My goal is to have a book done and in the process of being published by then. Or at least mostly written. Maybe edited? Who knows? What I’m saying is that a book is happening. She’s probably going to kick my butt for this, so how about we call it “pseudo-authorized” for the time being.

This is where I need YOUR help.

  • Are you, have you ever been, or do you know a comedian? If yes, shoot me a quick email with a story or question & some contact info. And pass this along to your comedy friends. And your agent, because they probably have some words to add, too.
  • Are you a former Joker? If you’ve seen that bathroom after a JUGS night, I KNOW you have stories. Let’s chat.
  • Do you have a photo of Lisa from her days at Oklahoma University with big 80’s hair? This is needed.
  • Do you have the stories of her time in Chicago (the beginnings of her career in comedy)
  • The “I can’t stand her, she is so mean” stories
  • The “thank god she talked some sense into me” stories
  • The “she does great things in Dayton and I’m glad she’s my friend” stories
  • The “I’m a struggling comic, but there might be some good dirt that will help this book sell and I’d like to be in it” stories.
  • Are you any of the above and hope desperately that your name is not mentioned? Don’t worry, I’m setting up a gofundme to cover publishing costs (if needed), there will be a category for you.

Please send any and all info to [email protected] and you can find me on twitter either here: @nikkisayswhat or: @daytoncomedy

So there you have it. I’m probably going to go into hiding for a couple days, ready to emerge with a bottle of bourbon and an “I’m sorta but not really sorry” smile for when she says, “what in the f*&% is this?”. Help me remind her that this is exactly the type of thing she would encourage. Oddly enough, this article is being published on mostmetro.com which Lisa actually owns. You can’t imagine the sneakiness this took to get posted, just to send out the link to people.

“Jokers, doin it right. Jokers, open tonight. Come on in for a laugh or a bite. Make it a Jokers night tonight…”

Take The Mystery Out Of Playwrighting

August 7, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

432043_318990408159347_12203253_nThe Ohio Playwrights Circle is offering a class in playwrighting from Sept. 5 to Oct. 17 at the educational facilities of The Human Race Theatre Company.

This class is designed to take the mystery out of playwrighting and provide an introduction to new playwrights. The method of building a play is explored through a variety of exercises. Our focus will be on understanding the tool in basic dramatic structure. The process involves a lot of scene writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of laughing, a lot of learning, and a lot of fun.

Each playwright will have the opportunity to create a 10-Minute Play that will be presented in a public reading. The class is planned for novices as well as experienced playwrights and encourages the opportunity for playwrights to hear their works come to life. No Playwrights will be expected to begin the class with already completed work.

Actors and directors are welcome to be part of the process. Class size is limited. Registration and additional information is available on The HRTC website.

The class will be taught by Ohio Playwright, Michael M. London. It will be held on Saturdays at the Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center, 116 N. Jefferson Street, in downtown Dayton.

The class is a project of the Ohio Playwrights Circle and is sponsored by American ArtWorks Foundation. It is hosted in Dayton by The Human Race Theatre Company, and supported by the Marsha Hanna Fund for the Development of New Plays.

Meet the Food Adventures Crew !

Hungry Jax

JACLYN SCANLAN aka “HUNGRY JAX”:

Jackie relocated to the Dayton area in 2006.  This Italian girl from Upstate NY found herself in a very different culinary atmosphere than what she was used to back home in Utica, NY.  However, different proved to be good a she fell in love with not only this “gem” of a city, but also the food and foodies within it! Cooking is a passion of Jackie’s.  She loves to use her husband, John, and two daughters, Coraline and Ashlyn, as her lab rats to test recipes out.  Some of her recipes have even been published in National Food Magazines!  But as much as she loves to cook, she also loves to take a night off from her kitchen and enjoy eating out and letting someone else do all the work (and the clean up)!  Other foodie interests include 8 years of volunteering at the Dorothy Lane Market School of Cooking and being an Alton Brown fan since way back when he wore bowling shirts.  Jackie is excited to be part of the Food Adventures team and is always looking forward to experiencing some new eats!

LEEANNE HOUSE aka “CHEF HOUSE”:

Chef House

Chef House or “The Sriracha Mamma” is all about the heat.  Lover of all things spicy she is constantly in the kitchen coming up with fun new ways to whip up veggies and add a little spice.  She is a Dayton native, with lifelong experience in the restaurant industry, working with some of the best chefs in the Miami Valley.  She loves to keep it local especially in the summer when beautiful produce is plentiful. She is a true foodie who knows we have a lot to offer in Ohio!  LeeAnne is also the owner of Housemade Sauces which specializes in a locally made Sriracha Sauce and a  Hot Honey Sriracha Sauce, which have won national awards.  Chef House is also the owner of the new “Bad Dog” Hot Dog Cart which features local dogs, local toppings and local buns!  She is also involved in putting on the “Night Market” events at the Yellow Cab Building.  She is definitely a foodie fixture around town, and an up and coming Chef.

The Big Ragu

STEVE MILANO aka “THE BIG RAGU”:

A lifelong Dayton resident, his early food influence was in his mom’s kitchen and his dad’s grill.  Other incredible food memories are his grandparents’ Italian and German/Scottish cooking.  Ragu’s love of food is only matched by his love of sports, travel, karaoke and just needing to be held.  An attention seeking missile, Ragu’s favorite foods include Seafood, Italian Food, and Chinese/Japanese cuisine.  Other hobbies include overeating  and a slight attraction to deep fried menu items.   Whether a locally owned business, fine dining, a dive, buffets, fast foods and even a few chain favorites, he enjoys visiting them all with a “no rules” attitude.  You can usually recognize him at festivals by the sweaty guy with the food stain on his shirt.  Emotionally eating his way through life with the Crew, they leave no plate unturned.  Most recently, his recipes have been featured in the monthly Foremost Seafood Newsletter.  This “foodie in his forties” is proud to be involved in dozens of local charity committees.

We hope to meet you at our Dorothy Lane Market Party Foods Class, where we will be cooking up a storm.   Seats are limited, get yours before we sellout.  Learn some new recipes, taste some fantastic party eats, and go on a full blown Food Adventure !

3rd Annual 5k for Kelli at Wegerzyn Gardens

August 6, 2015 By LIbby Ballengee

5k for Kelli is in memory of Kelli James

5k for Kelli is in memory of Kelli James

Sure there are plenty of 5k races in the area, but the upcoming 5k for Kelli is particularly close to my heart, as well as many other people in the Dayton area. Kelli James, a beloved wife, mother and sister, passed away in 2006 at the age of 40 to that cruel beast known as breast cancer. Kelli’s two ambitious sisters, Elesha Snyder and Mandi Moore, set to work. They wanted to honor their sister and help others going through this horrific situation.

Elesha explains the motivation for this race: “She was a very healthy person who never smoked or drank, and enjoyed outdoor activities. She was always so much fun and encouraged those around her to live life to the fullest. As you can imagine, losing her was devastating, not just to us, but to her two young children as well.”

She continues: “We wallowed in our depression for a few years but then Mandi and I decided to take action. We started by running and walking charity events that raised money for breast cancer charities like Susan G. Komen and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. In 2012, we decided to do our own 5k and 5k for Kelli was born. The first event was in August 2013 and we had over 300 participants. In two years, the 5k for Kelli has raised about 15,000 and given it to Hospice of Dayton, The Noble Circle Project and Good Sam. We received the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation’s Community Champion Award for 2013 and the Dayton Dragon’s Community All-Star Award in 2015. We are 100% volunteer based and there are ZERO administrative fees in our organization. We are a registered 501(c)(3).”

1488137_1447337692156225_1595091691_nThis year, Elesha and Mandi have created their very own charity in memory of Kelli called Breast Wishes. They grant wishes and give the gift of joy to local women and their families affected by breast cancer by presenting them with spa days, nice dinners, yoga retreats, and even family vacations.

This race has some great assets: First, it’s run at the gorgeous Wegerzyn Gardens Metro Park. Any excuse to see that park in the summertime is well worth it! Second, in honor of Kelli’s fondness of fairies, runners are encouraged to wear wings, flower crowns, and/or tutus during the race. What fun! Lastly and most importantly, 100% of the funds raised from this event will go to supporting local women living with breast cancer to help with nutrition, education, medical expenses, and the new “Breast Wishes” fund.

(In the event that the Convention Center is hosting a special event, do not pay an attendant for parking on your way in…simply state that you’re heading to THE NEON and you require a ticket that will be later validated.)

Thanks for your continued support.

We hope to see you this weekend!

Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday

August 3, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

taxGet ready to shop!  Ohio is finally going to have a sales tax holiday this August, just in time for back-to-school! A common practice in many states, Ohio lawmakers have approved the first ever sales tax holiday in the Buckeye State.

The holiday starts on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 12:01 am and ends on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at 11:59 pm. During this time only, you can buy certain items and not pay any sales or use tax, either at the store or online. Those items fall into the following categories:

• An item of clothing priced at $75 or less
• An item of school supplies priced at $20 or less
• An item of school instructional material priced at $20 or less

You can buy any number of clothing items under $75, since the exemption applies to the individual price of an item. The same applies to school supplies and instructional material.

While most items of clothing are included in the sales tax holiday, things like accessories and sports equipment are not included. There’s also a list of specific school supplies and instructional materials that are included in the holiday.

Proponents of the measure and supporters from other states with such holidays say retailers leverage the tax exemption to create a Black Friday-like appeal and end up offering their own promotions.

A  University of Cincinnati study concludes Ohio families will save $78 million on school supplies.

Visit the Ohio Department of Taxation’s information page for the specific lists and more details on the tax holiday.

Happy shopping!

Muse Machine Celebrate Songs from Elton John & The Lion King

August 3, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

MuseConcert2015(2)Young singers, dancers and musicians from across the greater Miami Valley will celebrate and reimagine the work of renowned pop star and composer Elton John in a special concert event as Muse Machine’s Your Songs takes the Victoria Theatre stage for one night only on Thursday, August 6 at 8:00pm. Popular hits like “Tiny Dancer,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Rocket Man,” as well as music from the Disney movie turned Broadway hit, The Lion King. Your Songs pairs new arrangements with original concepts that may take the audience by surprise, but will leave them remembering why they loved Sir Elton’s music so much in the first place.

Said producer Doug Merk, “Elton’s music has already been reimagined by other pop, jazz and R&B musicians, and there’s a reason that happens. This music stands the test of time.” With the help of some 150 performers, including elementary and high school students as well as Muse Machine alumni, Your Songs aims to continue a tradition of creative reinterpretation.

“There will be moments in the show that give a nod to Elton and to The Lion King, but most of the show, in true Muse Machine fashion, goes in new, funny and moving directions,” says Merk.

As the concert’s title might suggest, some of the music in Your Songs was selected by the general public, who voted for their favorite selections from Elton John’s substantial catalog on Muse Machine’s website.

Tickets for Your Songs are available exclusively through Ticket Center Stage at 937-228-3630, online at www.ticketcenterstage.com or at the Ticket Center Stage box office located inside the Schuster Center in downtown Dayton.

Local Endurance Athlete Goes the Distance for Sick Kids

August 3, 2015 By Bryan Suddith

tim on eliptigoRunners and athletes in the Miami Valley and beyond know Tim Rieger. Tim is both a Centerville High School and University of Cincinnati standout distance runner. Tim’s running accomplishments include winning the Flying Pig Marathon in 2005 and long list of top finishes in 50 and 100k races.

Recovering from an injury, Tim found himself on an Eliptigo bike.  The Eliptigo is powered by an eliptical type machine that moves the wheels on a bike. Tim recently decided to go the distance on the bike for A Kid Again. Since 2010 Tim has served the children’s charity as a board member here in Southwest Ohio.

Tim shares some history and the inspiration for this challenge in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BASW5uxe1U&feature=youtu.be

A Kid Again strives to foster hope, happiness and healing for families raising kids with life-threatening illness. This statewide Ohio charity just celebrated 20 years of serving these special kids and their families. Tim had a big goal of raising $10,000.00 for the charity by riding his bike 250 miles in 24 hours.

It only took Tim, a Vice President at Dayton based McGohan Brabender, three weeks to reach his goal. He is now looking to meet a new goal of $15,000.00 before his 24 hour challenge in just 3 more weeks.

Here is an update from Tim this week.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-aEaS0Q_Sk&feature=youtu.be

Tim says this 24 hour 250 mile challenge is the toughest he has attempted to date. In the past he has biked 200 miles, and once ran over 40 miles in 6 hours.

On August 21st, Tim starts his 24 Hour 250-mile journey on an ElliptiGO to raise money and awareness for the charity.  The ride will start at the Home Office of A Kid Again at 777-G Dearborn Park Lane in  Columbus and will travel through Dayton. From Dayton Tim will bike to Cincinnati where he will finish out the remaining distance of the 250 mile distance at Lunken Airport on the Lunken Playfield Loop.

Observers are welcome to come out and encourage and cheer Tim on the Lunken Playfield Loop. Tim has asked for your help to give Illness a GIANT Time Out for the kids and families of A Kid Again!
