Get Caffeinated

August 17, 2015 By Nikki Nett

20150817305972435Don’t let the mid-day slump get you down. There is hope and it’s not the questionable grog that has been brewing in the industrial coffee pot at the office all day.

Gary Clemens, the owner of Espresso Express and More is the cure to your caffeine problems. No seriously. He’s like a freaking angel bringing you a venti-triple-whatever-you-like right in the middle of the day. To wherever you are. Want in on this action? You can find their information on their facebook page or by calling (937) 776-0542.

As a start up, they are currently offering limited hours of delivery while they gauge the best hours and times for staffing. My guess is this won’t last long, because who wouldn’t want Ghostlight or Press delivered to your office anytime during the day?

So here’s the deal…First drink has a $5 delivery fee (plus the cost of the drink), that fee gets smaller for each additional drink ordered. You are not limited to coffee, (I know that I’d personally do backflips for a green smoothie mid-afternoon).  Gary accepts cash or credit cards.

I recently tried the service out, and I have to be brutally honest here: I almost don’t want everyone in the area to know about it just in case there is ever a time that I call and they are backed up with orders. I even said thaEspresot out loud. Fortunately, there are additional drivers available, with a few others on standby for when they expand. Hey, this is serious stuff, I had to make sure!

If you require a certain level of caffeination or just like having things delivered, you should check out Espresso Express. But don’t blame me for your new habit, it’s addicting!

Kettering Goes High End With West End

August 15, 2015 By Nikki Nett

FB_IMG_1439584241327Girls Night Out is about to have a whole new feel.

Coming soon, to Kettering, will be a brick and mortar location for West End Naturals. The local cult favorite of anyone who has smelled the signature scented Iced Lemon Biscotti candles will be available to the public, along with many other uniquely scented products.

Started in 2010, West End Naturals has been quietly making an impact in the Miami Valley. Owner, Janelle West originally set out for her all natural candle & body products to be an alternative to the products she was finding in stores, often filled with artificial ingredients. What she found instead was an opportunity to make an impact beyond just making safe products.

FB_IMG_1439584259814The new Kettering location is introducing a unique concept to the Dayton area. In addition to having pre-made products for sale, they will also be hosting “Pour Your Own” parties. Guests will be able to choose from glassware available there, or bring a favorite piece from home and fill it with their favorite scented wax. How much fun is that? This will be a perfect activity for bridal and baby showers, teambuilding functions, holiday parties and more!

If you have supported fundraisers such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand or Leukemia Lymphoma Society Man / Woman of the Year Campaign, you may already have a West End Naturals product in your home. West has donated an extensive amount of products to these causes and more. In fact if her name sounds familiar, you might know her as the LLS Woman of the Year in 2013. Do you know of a group raising money for a cause? This may be the answer!

FB_IMG_1439584253889West End Naturals is located at 3805 Wilmington Pike in Kettering (just north of Stroop).

There will be a Grand Opening / Open House on Thursday August 27th at 6pm. Stop by and be ready to fall in love with this quaint little shop. You won’t want to leave, I promise.

sky during the Perseid meteor shower! The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brighter meteor showers of the year, occur every year between July 17 and August 24. The shower tends to peak around August 9-13.The best time to view the Perseids, or most other meteor showers, is when the sky is the darkest. August 14 marks a new moon and the perfect condition to view the meteor shower. Cost for this event for  The Glen Helen Association and Astronomy Club Members: $10 for adults; $8 for children; nonmembers: $15. 5k for Kelli Run/Walk

The third annual 5K for Kelli will take place on Saturday, August 15 at Wegerzyn Gardens. Registration begins at 7:30 am and the run/walk officially takes off at 9:00 am. The 5k for Kelli was created to honor Kelli James who passed away in 2006 at the age of 40. This event is a celebration of Kelli’s life and a remembrance of all those who, like her, lost their battle with breast cancer. 100% of the funds raised from this event will go to supporting local women living with breast cancer to help with nutrition, education, and medical expenses. All proceeds will go to Hospice of Dayton, The Good Samaritan Breast Health Center and The Noble Circle Project. Not only is this an exceptional cause to support, you even get to dress in fairy attire! Yes, that is correct, fairy attire! Kelli loved fairies, this year feel free to remember Kelli via your best fairy outfit. In addition to the 5K run/walk there will also be a costume contest and a raffle drawing as well as numerous vendors. What could be better – support a fabulous cause, exercise, and the option to dress up like a fairy? Sounds like one of the best events in town!

Another very special 5K will take place on Sunday, August 16. The Love4Ahmad 5K run/walk will take place at Kettering Middle School. This is free of charge, however, a donation is suggested to help support the family of this exceptional young man. Key Sports and the A-Team Runners are hosting a ‘Pave It Forward‘ event for Ahmad Doucet, a Kettering Fairmont High School wrestler who suffered a stroke while training for Team Ohio for the Junior National Duals. There will also be a raffle of several prizes from local businesses. Donations can be made payable to “Key Sports” and 100% of net proceeds will be contributed to the “Ahmad Doucet Charitable Fund” at Wright-Patt Credit Union. This is an excellent way to support a young person who was injured while doing what he loved, wrestling.

That’s wraps up the weekend line-up of some very unique and inspirational events. Hope you are able to attend at least one if not all of these activities. Get out and get active Dayton!

Sweeten Your Day with a Honey Latte

August 14, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Ghostlight Coffee on Wayne Avenue has  introduce a new menu of lattes sweetened with local honey: “Café con Miel”
There are five exciting, and exotic Miel lattes…they start with local honey from Twin Creek Apiaries, shots of espresso roasted by Deeper Roots Coffee, mix in spices from Miami Valley Spice Traders and Cocoa from a new Dayton company, Mesocacao.
11836887_881928965189590_7515610528411835755_n
the Morroccan features a spice blend called “Ras el Hanout.” This blend is considered “Top Shelf” throughout Morrocco and much of North Africa. The blend consists of such spices as Coriander, Star Anise, Cardamom & White Pepper…so there is a little heat, but not too much.the Mumbai includes the Miami Valley Spice Traders take on “Masala” or Indian Spices, often used in Chai (Tea). You will note Cinnamon, Cloves, Anise & Cardamom.

the Mesocacao is pretty straightforward…this is cocoa powder directly from Matagalpa Nicaragua, mixed in with the honey latte. It was processed in Central America and imported directly by an exciting new local small businsess.11234930_881929075189579_1019171520801933575_o

the Beesting has been on our menu before. This is SPICY! Ginger and Cayenne provide the heat, to balance the sweet of the honey. Want it extra hot? Ask your barista to toss in some extra cayenne.

the Miel Básica is a “Basic Honey” Latte…but with locally sourced honey from Twin Creek Apiaries.

They will also have Twin Creek Apiaries Honey available for purchase in jars.

You can also add the local honey to other beverages, that is available upon request with charge.

Their supply is limited and these lattes will only be available as supplies last.

Larga vida a las abejas de miel!  (Long live honey bees)

A Difference Maker in Dayton: Lisa Tucker

August 13, 2015 By Bryan Suddith

Councilman Brooks Compton, volunteers and Centerville PD take time to play kickball over lunch today at Chevy Chase Apartments. Photo by Bryan Suddith

If you drive south on Main Street out of Dayton you eventually will find Bill’s Donuts. A south Dayton establishment and mainstay on any Best Doughnuts list. Drive a little farther south on Main Street/Far HIlls/St Rt 48 and you come to Chevy Chase Apartments in Centerville. With a little over 200 apartments this enclave Centerville residents is often overlooked.

More than 400 kids, school age and younger, live in those 200 apartments and many are short of adult role models and attention. It is estimated that the majority of these kids are in single parent households or households where both parents, or grandparents, work to make ends meet.

LisaTucker

Lisa Tucker

Lisa Tucker, daughter of Bill’s Donuts namesake, Bill Elam, decided she should get involved there. So last summer she called a few friends, grabbed some hotdogs, chips and plenty of doughnuts and set out to make some friends on the playground. This summer she, assisted by employees, friends and various church groups, delivered lunch and fun to kids every Monday of their summer break. For 9 consecutive Monday’s she brought lunch, some entertainment and adults to hangout on the playground in the middle of the Chevy Chase courtyard.

I had the privilege of spending two Monday lunch hours with the kids and Lisa. When I asked her about the kids she simply said “these are great kids, they just want someone to hangout, play kickball, push them on the swing and listen.” So that is what I did, assisted with a few magic tricks to break the ice, I simply hung out and played.

Today I witnessed a Centerville Police officer, full uniform, 90 degrees playing kickball with about a dozen of the kids. Assisted by City Councilman Brooks Compton, volunteers and a Bill’s employee, the kids got a full hour of kickball with new friends.  I figure more was done to understand these kids in 4 innings of kickball that can ever be attained by a commissioned study or committee investigation.

While taking pictures it became clear to me that peace in our community and communication between folks in the cul-de-sacs and the folks in large apartment complexes doesn’t have to be complicated. All you have to do is show up and toss the ball.

Today 50 kids are happier because they got a hot dog, a balloon animal, a doughnut and some playtime with folks who just wanted to hang out. Easy as that.

Thinking Outside the Kid’s Lunch Box

August 13, 2015 By Dayton937

“Banana Dog” – a fun twist on PB&J

It feels like summer barely started and here we are already looking to start another school year! It’s that time of year again where we make sure our kiddos have the necessary supplies, new clothes and even technology to start the school year off right. In addition to being so conscious about your student’s educational needs, let’s explore some creative and delicious options for their appetites!

After all, Food Adventures aren’t just for adults !  Dayton Most Metro’s resident foodie mom, Hungry Jax, is here for some tips on making the most of your children’s school lunches!

EQUIPMENT:

First, let’s talk about the lunch box hardware that is helpful for making health, fun and easy lunches. Obviously, a good lunch box that has a thermal lining will help keep foods fresh and flavorful while it hangs out in your kid’s locker or coatroom. Buy a mini ice pack to toss into the lunch box/bag to further ensure their food stays cold.

Depending on beverages that your child prefers at lunch, a good thermos to keep water, milk or juice cold is also important. Finally, there are so many lunch container options that help parents create their own “bento box” for kids on the market. You can find many options in the food storage aisle of your local grocery store.

SUN-BUTTER:

While peanut butter and jelly has always been a fantastic “go to” for school lunches, these days many schools are not allowing nut butters due to allergy concerns for their students. A close alternative is using Sun-butter, which is made from sunflower seeds. Sun-butter has a very similar taste and consistency to peanut butter! Some kids might notice the difference right away, but keep offering it to them and they eventually will get used to it. You can find sun-butter in most grocery stores in the natural foods section.

TOO CRUSTY?

Do your kids not like the crust on their sandwiches? Get creative! Use large cookie cutters to cut their sandwiches into fun shapes! You can also buy actually sandwich cutters that are made to cut the shapes out to as close as the edge as possible so as to not waste any food.

Now THIS is a fruit roll-up!

Now THIS is a fruit roll-up!

TORTILLAS TO THE RESCUE:

Hungry Jax will vouch that when in doubt, put food rolled up into a tortilla and a kid will eat it. Just about any sandwich filling can be rolled up and even sliced into pinwheels! One of her family favorites is taking 8oz of cream cheese and whipping it with a tsp of vanilla and tsp of lemon zest. Slather a wheat tortilla with this mixture and then add fresh fruit. Roll up and leave whole or slice it up! A refreshing lunch that’s not the same old lunch meat or pb&j! And it’s versatile! Instead of a sweet cream cheese, go savory with chopped herbs and veggies!

DO THE DIP:

Another thing that kids like to do: dip their food into stuff. Why not make some fresh humus and chop up some veggies or pitas to dip? Slice up a baguette, pepperoni and mozzarella and let them dip it in homemade marinara for a fun play on pizza.

HOMEMADE vs STORE MADE:

Are your kids a fan of those popular pre-made lunch containers found in the refrigerator section of the grocery store? You know the ones: they have slimy, pre-cut lunchmeat, cheeses and crackers? We aren’t. And here’s why: we can create our own version for cheaper and healthier. Buy a stack of the segmented lunch containers (one for each day of the week). Chop up your own meats and cheeses on Sunday night and divvy them up within the containers. The night before or morning of, add crackers, fruit/veggies and whatever else you want. Boom. You just saved yourself money and preservatives.

SMOOTH & HEALTHY MOVES:

Do your kids like smoothies? Make a batch of smoothies on Sunday. Freeze them in small containers and on the morning of school, toss one in their lunch bag (don’t forget the straw). By lunchtime, the smoothie will have thawed enough to drink! It also duos as an ice pack!

Homemade granola is a great addition to a healthy lunch!

Homemade granola is a great addition to a healthy lunch!

Yogurt is another great option. Let your kids build their own yogurt parfaits! Buy a tub of yogurt and divvy it up into small containers on Sunday night (yes, we are keeping you busy on your Sundays). Chop up fruit for them to add as well as granola! Even toss in some chocolate chips for a special treat! Your kids will have fun assembling their parfaits and you can feel good that they are getting a healthy meal!

Salads are another great option where you can include healthy and fun options. Also consider pasta salads!

With a little forethought and preparation, you can provide your kids (and yourself) with healthy and fun lunch options that are more affordable and creative!

INTERNET & INPUT:

There are so many ideas out there on the internet! Start a Pinterest board and let your creative juices flow! And don’t forget to let your kids help! Make it a part of their nightly routine to put a lunch together for the next day. Get their input on what’s easy to eat but still fills them up. It only takes an extra 10 minutes a day to prepare your kids for the ultimate Lunch Food Adventure!

Check out some of our favorite go to websites for great recipe ideas!

WEELICOUS – a fantastic website for family meals!

100 DAYS OF REAL FOOD – learn how to feed your family with out all the preservatives!

EATING FROM THE GROUND UP – copycat those popular store bought favorites!

We hope our tips gave you a few new ideas to get the most out of packing your kid’s school lunch.  Think outside the lunch box and your children will be grateful.

Spend Thursday Rocking With Ruckus Robiticus!

August 12, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

1500x1500-300x300A little Hole in the Wall in the Oregon District will be rocking out Thursday night starting at 9pm,  as Ruckus Robiticus makes a return to his hometown for the release of  Phantom Of The Disco. Even better, entry into the event is free!

Born and raised in Dayton,  Ruckus Roboticus was endowed with Dayton’s creative spirit, D.I.Y. grit, and FUNK POWER. Full of energy and imagination – he discovered scratching on the B-side of the first record he ever bought: DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand”. It wasn’t long until he was playing with scratches using his Muppets Show LP and sister’s turntable. Inspired by music magazines and CDs purchased from the “Experimental / Electronica” section of his local record store (where he would later work, and would eventually meet his future wife), he was soon experimenting with looping and layering audio on his parents’ primitive home computer. Eventually he decided to make some “experimental” music of his own – and his musical instrument of choice would be the turntable.

While Ruckus is not quite yet a household name, his music has aired on TV and Radio worldwide, and he’s performed all over the globe, often times sharing the stage with very well known artists. He’s won a few awards, remixed some awesome bands, and received some noteworthy critical acclaim.  He started his own record label – Dance Or Die Records (named after his wildly popular dance party in Ohio) – to release his and his friends’ dance music.  He’s been the man behind the music at ARC Ohio’s Masquerage, The Rubi Girl Shows and more.

In 2013 – Ruckus Roboticus moved to Los Angeles to intensify his pursuit of music making and record playing.  Despite some flourishes of success, Ruckus remains somewhat under the radar – working tirelessly in the studio on a slew of new remixes, music for television, and looking for the perfect beat. Song by song, and mix by mix, Ruckus continues to delight listeners around the world. It’s only a matter of time until the music masses realize, this is the dawning of The Age Of Roboticus!

Trying To Get Healthy? Keep It Simple To Start.

August 12, 2015 By Jason Harrison

Jason arms foldedI’ve worked as a personal trainer and fitness coach all across this country, from New York to Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. As I return to my roots in the Dayton area, I’ll be using this space to write about health, wellness, and lifestyle with an eye toward the practical, the sustainable, and the efficient. Probably the most important thing that I’ve learned over the last ten years in an exploding industry is that health and fitness have become needlessly complicated for busy people. My goal in my work and in this space is to fix that.

So let’s get started.

If you’re the average American—meaning, you don’t eat the right combination of foods, you don’t get enough exercise, and you’re overweight—then you should start your fitness journey as simply as possible.

What to Put in Your Face: Vegetables and Water

When it comes to healthy body composition, your goal is to find nutrient dense foods as opposed to calorie dense foods. Vegetables are nutrient dense foods packed with things like vitamins and minerals but not calories. They also are full of fiber, which has been shown to play an important role in everything from immune health to digestion. Chances are if you fill half your plate with vegetables at every meal (yes, including breakfast) and eat slowly, you’ll have a built-in portion control.IMG_5368

The rest of your plate should be a combination of a good, lean source of protein like chicken if you’re a meat eater or beans if you’re not; a healthy fat like olive oil or avocado; and a small amount of a starchy carbohydrate like rice, potatoes, or bread (if you must).

And of course, like your grandmama said, drink more water. It will help with proper body function and it will help you avoid mindless consumption of things like soda. If you’re struggling to drink enough, try this: fill a glass of water and put it by your bedside table. When you wake up in the morning drink the entire glass.

IMG_5373

What to do with Your Body: Lift, Walk, Love

Many people mistakenly believe that they need to run, bike, jog, dance, or somehow cardio their way to a better body. They buy Fitbits and sign up for brutal bootcamps and hire trainers to kick their butts like they see on reality television. They do all of these things because they believe the goal with exercise is pain and sweat. But if you’re a busy person with limited time, your primary goal with exercise ought to be to build as much muscle mass as possible.

Why? Simply put, the more muscle mass you have, the higher the rate of your calorie burning while at rest. People say they want to lose weight, but more often they’re really looking to be leaner. They want to look good naked as opposed to only looking good with their clothes on (the dreaded “skinny fat” aesthetic). Looking good naked requires muscle.

If you’re doing weight-bearing exercise twice a week then you’re already giving yourself a fighting chance of having the body you want. But cardiovascular fitness also is important, so you should try to walk—preferably outside, and preferably with a loved one—several times a week. Outside because it’s more interesting and you’ll get valuable vitamin D from the sun exposure. With a loved one because strong social ties and stress reduction are important foundations for lifelong fitness.

Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t complicated, but that’s not the same thing as easy. Incorporating these simple changes into one’s life is difficult enough. Don’t distract yourself with gadgets, juice cleanses, and diets. Sustainability and efficiency are built upon a foundation of the basics.

A collaboration by BJ’s Brewhouse and Stone Brewing Co.

August 10, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Stone-IPA-640x360San Diego’s Stone Brewing Co. is collaborating with BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse on a new, limited-release beer, Temple of Stone IPA, available at all 166 BJ’s across 22 states.

A distinctive IPA that is brewed with malted wheat, experimental hops and elderflower. The use of wheat enhances the complex hop profile. Two experimental hop varieties – Jarrylo and Belma – contribute fruity hop flavors that resemble blackberry and strawberry, while mellow floral notes of elderflower cover the palate. The finish is hop bitter as you would expect from an IPA.

“Temple of Stone IPA represents two original craft brewers combining talent to create a recipe that highlights the industry’s camaraderie,” said Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele.

The new beer will be available at BJ’s restaurants beginning Monday and will remain on tap through early September, or while supplies last.

Style:  Wheat IPA
Alcohol:  7.7% by volume
Bitterness (IBU): 77

Bendy Beer – Yoga at Warped Wing

August 9, 2015 By Nikki Nett

kaitlin yoga 3Warped Wing is opening it’s big door for a new class. Beermaking? No. Beer tasting? Nope.

Yoga. You can do yoga at Dayton’s very own Warped Wing Brewing Company. Flying Rye kind of sounds like a yoga pose, right?

It’s always so exciting to see former co-workers moving on to bigger, better, and in this case, bendier things. That’s why I was doing headstands of excitement (ok, I wasn’t, I’m just not there yet) to see my friend Kate putting together this unique event. She has spent the last few years becoming a yoga instructor and wanted to introduce yoga to those who may not normally be the “yoga-type”.

You may be thinking “what’s the yoga type?” and if given a list of descriptions, you’d probably not choose “craft beer drinker”. But, Kate is betting those two will go together like barley and hops, or warrior pose and lululemon.

When I asked her why she put this event together, she said,  “I love bringing the community together for a fun and care-free afternoon. What a better way to spend your time than with yoga and a craft beer? I am passionate about spreading the joy of yoga and bringing craft beer into the mix opens the door to many new people that may have not tried a yoga class.”kaitlin yoga 2

Due to the increasing popularity of this event, participants must purchase tickets in advance to guarantee a spot (yes, the last one sold out!) The next class is scheduled for Sun, Sept 6th,  click here for tickets.

From Kate’s event page:

Could yoga & beer ever exist? You bet your flexible-ass they can! Join us at Warped Wing Brewing Company for a rocking one-hour yoga class followed with a beer from the local brewery.

We will move through a fluid sequence of postures (asanas), focus on our breath (pranayama), that invigorate, strengthen, and restore the body.

This all levels class is ideal for anyone who is interested in exploring yoga in a different & chill environment & wants to expand their minds in respect to local beers.

Cost is $12, which includes a 1-hour yoga class followed by a pint of your choice. Must be 21 to attend.
Class will start right at NOON, so come early to get settled in!
BYOM (Bring your own mat) & water.

Hope you’ll join us for this fun afternoon of yoga & beer. I’ll be the one in the back, perfecting the childs pose and waiting for the Ermals.
