Evil Dead – The Musical comes to Victoria Theatre Nov. 6-8!

October 30, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

image005EVIL DEAD – THE MUSICAL, winner of the 2007 Dora Audience Choice Award as Toronto’s (CA) favorite show, unleashes its bloody mayhem and fun, Nov. 6-8, 2015 for a limited engagement at Dayton’s historic Victoria Theatre as part of the 2015-2016 Star Projects Unlimited Star Attractions.

Evil Dead – The Musical, the hilarious, record-breaking Canadian musical (book and lyrics by George Reinblatt, director, co-creator and co-composer Christopher Bond, music by Frank Cipolla, Melissa Morris, Reinblatt and Bond) tells the outrageous story of five college friends spending the weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods after accidentally unleashing an evil force that turns them all into demons.

The original production, based on the Evil Dead film franchise, opened 12 years ago in Toronto and enjoyed an immensely popular run, with 150 productions presented in cities around the world with sold-out houses and rave reviews from critics.

“EVIL DEAD – THE MUSICAL is the most fun you can have at the theatre. It’s a show everyone loves – even if you don’t love musicals,” said Corey Ross, president of Starvox Entertainment. “Since being called ‘the next Rocky Horror Show’ by The New York Times, the show has been touring around the world, so all can enjoy the evil fun.”

Those familiar with EVIL DEAD – THE MUSICAL will remember that audience members sitting in the designated “Splatter Zone” (almost sold-out) get covered in fake blood as the production incorporates some fun, ‘real-life’ effects, during certain scenes. In addition to some dismembered limbs, demons telling bad jokes, and catchy tunes (Look Who’s Evil Now, All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Canadian Demons), the show features a saucy combination of wit and sexual innuendo that keeps audiences laughing out loud.

Tickets begin at $25 and are on sale now at Ticket Center Stage, located in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center, by phone at (937) 228-3630, toll-free (888) 228-3630, or online at www.ticketcenterstage.com.

Caldron of Musical Mayhem at Oddbody’s

October 30, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

It was a dark stormy night and Dr. Lovenstein was hard at work in the depths of his Subterranean freak lab mixing up a strong batch of funk. As he poured his steamy concoction into the large kettle before him the chemicals began to swirl and a dark melody arose. He raised his arms in victory and the Cauldron of Musical Mayhem was born.

Dr. Lovenstein has invited Glostik Willy, and Jahman Brahman to the Subterranean Funk lab to help share his mystical creation. You won’t want to miss this event that takes place Halloween night October 31st at Oddbody’s! A freaky night of funky musical fun awaits you!

How to go?

Subterranean’s Caldron of Musical Mayhem Featuring Subterranean, Glostik Willy, & Jahman Brahman

Performing at Oddbody’s Music Room (conveniently near 35, north of the Woodman exit at 5418 Burkhardt Rd.)

8pm Doors. $10 in advance, $15 at the door. 18+

More about the bands:

Subterranean approaches improvisation with intent. Pushing stylistic boundaries and fearlessly exploring their musical journey while still presenting infectious grooves. This creates a unique experience at every live performance making each one a must see.

Glostik Willy is the life support for the rock & roll you thought was dead. The band formed in early 2008, and since then has grown to be a driving force in today’s scene bridging the gap between rock and jam and forming their own genre of music that can only be described as Hippy Metal. GW has done 500+ performances in more than 17 states and counting. The band has hosted 7 music festivals (May Daze, Stik Nite, Twig Nite, Willy Fest) and performed at over 35 festivals. Glostik Willy brings an energy like no other during live performances that gets crowds moving and grooving all night long. Currently the band is working on a new album that will feature the bands most recent musical workings while releasing a series of live albums. Glostik Willy continues to thrive on the road spreading their love for music to anyone with an open ear. If this group of in your face Hippy Metal addicts happen to stop by a city near you, be sure not to miss this amazing musical spectacle that the world knows as Glostik Willy.

Jahman Brahman is a four-member collaboration originating from Columbus, Ohio in 2005, and currently residing in the mountains of Asheville, NC. The musical intuition of each member overcomes the restrictions of any particular genre as they pioneer the musical trail with a sound completely their own. The name Jahman Brahman emerged from each member’s goal to achieve the ultimate state of musical cohesion; each instrument connected to one another to create a piece of music from the heart of one.

They’ve described their particular style as shred ‘n’ flow, a dynamic sound with a wide breath of influence, but a focus on rich, fluid, progressions of energy. Providing the low end, Nate “Brother” Brown brings his own style of funked out and super fresh bass grooves giving depth to Justin Brown’s full and conscious lyrics. Drummer Chuck Knott gives the sound its steady concrete pulse providing the heartbeat for Casey Chanatry’s riveting guitar-work. Combined, Jahman Brahman leaves the listener with a message on life, love, and the wonders experienced being part of an extraordinary musical family.

Each member holds a unique passion toward many different audio paths, with influences ranging from classic rock to electronica; from punk to jazz. Instead of conforming, they ascend music through the coalescence of their diverse styles, taking risks that unfold into powerful jams and creative compositions.

BLANCHETT & REDFORD in TRUTH + Big Changes at THE NEON!

October 29, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

f15d409ef0d2dd66517a60e998226f3b74edbf29Hello Everyone,

Cate Blanchett & Robert Redford! Need I say more? If you’re like me, you’re already invested! Tomorrow (Oct. 30) we open TRUTH – the new film starring these two incredible actors! (In the coming weeks, I’ll hopefully have more details for you about CAROL – the film with Blanchett I’ve been anticipating for more than a year.) If you still need to see EXPERIMENTER or COMING HOME, you’ll need to hurry. Today is the last day for both of these films at THE NEON. If you need showtimes for today, please visit our website – www.neonmovies.com Showtimes for the upcoming weekend/week are below.

I’ve recently had several people ask me why movies aren’t sticking around longer…customers are wondering why wonderful films (like COMING HOME and PHOENIX and MERU) are leaving after such short runs. Simply put, it almost always means films aren’t performing well. We haven’t had a hit in quite a while, and the independent industry is feeling this across the board. As I write this, distributors are frantically changing their distribution strategies for upcoming films – opening dates are shifting (some forward, some backward), and some titles may disappear entirely from our “Coming Soon” list. These date moves make it all the harder on small venues like THE NEON to effectively market upcoming engagements. I truly appreciate you keeping your eyes on this newsletter (and even our website and facebook) for the latest developments.

Synopsis for TRUTH: “On the morning of September 9, 2004, veteran CBS News producer MARY MAPES (Cate Blanchett) believed she had every reason to feel proud of a broadcast journalism job well done. By the end of the day, Mapes, CBS News, and the venerable CBS News anchor DAN RATHER (Robert Redford) would be under harsh scrutiny. The evening before, 60 Minutes II had aired an investigative report, produced by Mapes and reported on-air by Rather, that purported to reveal new evidence proving that President George W. Bush had possibly shirked his duty during his service as a Texas Air National Guard pilot from 1968 to 1974.” (taken from Sony Classics) Stephen Holden of THE NEW YORK TIMES wrote, “TRUTH is a gripping, beautifully executed journalistic thriller about the events that ended Dan Rather’s career as a CBS anchorman.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Don’t forget that we’ve just opened MEET THE PATELS!
Synopsis for MEET THE PATELS: “A laugh-out-loud real life romantic comedy about Ravi Patel, an almost-30-year-old Indian-American who enters a love triangle between the woman of his dreams…and his parents. This hilarious and heartwarming film reveals how love is a family affair.” (taken from Alchemy Releasing) VARIETY calls the film “Sharp” and “Riotously funny.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

On Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7:30, Dayton native Tann Moore is bringing a selection of short films to town. “The Dayton Onyx Cinefest (D.O.C.) is a cinefest designed to broaden the horizons of local artists by bringing the culture of film to the African- American arts community and consumers of African-American entertainment in Dayton, Ohio. The fest’s goal is to encourage, educate and enhance the fine-arts related careers of emerging and established local filmmakers of color through a public exhibition and eventual competition program. The desire is to be instrumental in the process of discovering and launching independent films and filmmakers by bringing them to the attention of the public and broader industry. Additionally, attendees will have access to informational seminars and workshops covering a variety of topics including: independent film production, writing for independent film, and will have access to online tutorial programs designed to inform and educate local actors.” Tickets are $20 each and are available via the official site or at THE NEON’s Box Office.

On Sunday, November 15 at 3:00, The Dayton International Peace Museum will have a special screening of SEEKING THE TRUTH IN THE BALKANS. This screening is in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords, and tickets will be on a first come first serve basis on the day of the screening for a requested minimum donations of $10. “In the 1990s, the former state of Yugoslavia devolved into chaos as various segments of the country declared independence, inflaming age-old ethnic tensions and the worst genocide to occur in Europe since World War II. During the midst of the conflict, the UN Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to prosecute genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The ICTY was the first international criminal tribunal since Nuremberg. Now, 23 years later as the ICTY is wrapping up its cases, this prize-winning documentary explores the legacy of this landmark experiment in international law and asks if truth, peace, justice or reconciliation were attained by interviewing over 100 persons most impacted by the decisions of the Tribunal. The trailer for the film can be seen by clicking this LINK.

“Up And Running of Dayton has partnered with Trails in Motion to bring exciting films and documentaries about trail running to the Dayton Area on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30. All proceeds from this event will go to Girls On The Run of Dayton. Each year, the TRAILS IN MOTION FILM TOUR brings a collection of the finest trail running films to passionate audiences around the world. Trails in Motion strives to present a varied montage of high quality film content from dynamic film makers in this genre, and also aims to develop a global community that brings together like minded trail runners and outdoor enthusiasts in a visual celebration of the sport. All hosted by people who love to share this ‘dirty art’ with their local running communities.” (taken from press notes) Tickets, just $12 each, are available at THE NEON’s box office, at Up And Running stores in Dayton and Troy or via this Speedy Feet LINK.

I’ve already had a handful of requests regarding this year’s holiday film selections. I will announce this year’s line-up in next week’s newsletter!

Thanks for your continued support!
Hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

A Dispatch from New York

October 28, 2015 By Jason Harrison

I’m filing this column today from New York, a city I’ve always loved and that has always welcomed me as if it were my home. As I sit down to write this for my actual hometown of Dayton, I can’t stop thinking about what the two cities could learn from one another in the area of fitness.

image1

It won’t surprise you to learn that New Yorkers in my training experience are ultra-competitive. Take a yoga class in New York and you’ll see people falling all over themselves to be the “best in the class.” Take a spinning class and you’ll see fights (literally sometimes) over bike assignments and noise. And there’s a nefarious drive for women to be able to wear high-fashion clothes—few of which are designed for people who squat regularly. A number of my female clients told me when I trained here that they wanted me to help them be skinny without any hint of muscle tone.

But the thing New York does have that I’d like to see more of in Dayton is a baseline assumption among working professionals that fitness is a fundamental aspect of life in which it is worth investing both precious time and money. As I suggested above, this isn’t necessarily altogether for positive reasons; people are competing for mates, attention, and status in a city of more than 8 million people. But whatever the reason, I spent less time as a trainer in New York convincing people of the utility of staying fit than I have to in Ohio.

At first glance, this seems strange because our state is a bit of a fitness capital in this country. Just an hour down the road, Columbus hosts the annual Arnold Sports Festival, a fitness-centered exhibition, competition, and learning conference. Columbus also is home to the legendary Louie Simmons Westside Barbell gym. And right here in the Dayton area we have a number of serious facilities like The Dirty Gym on East Second Street. Given our training roots, we seem primed in Dayton to infuse a culture of fitness into the fiber of Gem City culture. But we’re not there yet. Why?

IMG_6182

New York City, October 2015

I went to a benefit recently in which I was giving away a free personal training session for people who donated to a worthy cause. The conversations I had that night were fascinating, because most of them centered on the idea that strength training was some mythical thing that bodybuilders and professional athletes do, but not “merely” regular folk with jobs and kids and responsibilities. One person even referred to me as a bodybuilder, which I can only assure you is not a mistake that anyone who knows what a dedicated bodybuilder looks like would ever make.

The issue for Dayton when it comes to fitness, then, despite Ohio’s well-earned reputation for excellence in strength, is that too many of us see fitness as something that other people do. Only fitness “freaks” like bodybuilders would waste time in the gym and paying attention to what they eat. Only a self-centered narcissist would bother hiring a coach to help her achieve her fitness goals.

Fitness isn’t just for freaks and selfish people or fancy pants New Yorkers. It’s for all of us. Gay, straight, young, old, fat, thin. I promise you that your quality of life, the way you feel when you get out of bed every morning, the way you see yourself, the way your lover sees you, all of these things will improve if you get stronger, leaner, and more mobile.

How many hours a week are you currently dedicating to fitness? The data say too many of the people reading this column might be able to answer zero. If you’re one of those people, how would you improve your quality of life measurably if you—

  • were stronger.
  • were leaner.
  • were more mobile.
  • had better bone density.
  • had better stamina (including in the bedroom)?

So the real question might just be this: why don’t you think you deserve to feel better than you do now?

Cool Winter Ahead for Jet Freeze

October 28, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Pumpkin Ice Cream Cone and a Pumpkin Sundae

Dayton’s beloved soft serve ice cream mecca, Jet Freeze, is heading for uncharted territory.  They have decided to stay open throughout winter!  The eatery will be open for the remainder of the year and plans to stay open year round

Jet Freeze has a new flavor they are carrying through the end of October… PUMPKIN ICE CREAM !  No one else in Dayton has soft serve pumpkin ice cream, so get a taste of fall before they pull the plug on this flavor.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Jet Freeze is located in Beavercreek at 4014 E. Patterson Rd.

— They are staying open year round, with winter hours of 11am-7pm everyday.

— New menu items such as soups and additional sandwiches can be expected

— They take credit cards now, and limited seating in dining room and stone tables by front  parking lots.

— Opened in 1957, they have had 3 generations of management in the owner’s family.

— Why is the soft serve so delicious?  The answer is fresh milk.  We saw them pouring gallons of Reiter milk into the machine that mixes the 95% fat free treat.

— All of the menu items are favorably priced.. even the largest soft serve cones are a little more than $2. It is very cheap to eat here …

A Flurry and a Footlong Dog

Jet Freeze has chocolate and vanilla soft serve as their mainstays and these cones are delicious.

But we have a few MUST EATS, that you need to know about.

MUST EATS:

PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAE:
Homemade peanut butter sauce, mixed on site.  It is a secret recipe, guarded by a few.  We think it is addicting and one of the richest, best tasting sundaes we have ever eaten.  Get whip cream, nuts and a cherry. Those extras make the sundae.

FOOTLONG HOT DOG:
Nothing super special, just a cheap, good throwback.  You can’t get a good footlong anywhere anymore these days.  Grab it with onions, mustard and relish.. or go full out 1970’s NY Coney style chili dog.

STRAWBERRY SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM:
They also specialize in strawberry ice cream, a flavor that is rare in soft serve circles.  The management told us the strawberry flavoring is specially mixed by employees for that great one of a kind taste.  It is some of the best strawberry ice cream we have ever had.

The Banana Split from Jet Freeze

BANANA SPLIT:
Your typical sundae with 3 scoops of vanilla, one drizzled with hot chocolate, one with pineapple topping, and one drizzled with strawberry flavoring.  Two banana boats down the side make this a massive monster of a sundae.

BLUEBERRY SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM:
Only available late May through early September, this is the same as the “smurf ice cream” offered at King’s Island.  It is rare and hugely popular.  We bet you fall in love with this one too.

Honorable Mention:
Hot Fudge Sundae (always a winner), and the Butterscotch or Banana Malt Shake which will melt you into your chair with pleasure.  Did we mention the BBQ Sandwich ain’t bad too ?

Stay tuned to this old school ice cream shop, as they add new menu items.  Even when it is cold outside this winter, they will be cooler inside.  Survive the winter’s deep freeze, at Jet Freeze !  We are glad to see them decide to stay open year round, we guess “cooler heads prevailed.”

Housemade Introduces Peachy Sriracha!

October 27, 2015 By Lee Anne House

12140652_480175028829474_1199866927304909117_nDayton finally has more sriracha! What a long wait it has been. Due to a problem sourcing peppers the original sauce has been off the shelves most of the summer. But now HouseMade Sriracha is back up and running with their newest flavor, Peachy Sriracha. Super ripe peaches combined with Cincinnati grown habaneros makes for a fun sweet and spicy sauce. This is a small batch made at the end of the peach season. When it’s gone it’s gone till next year. Get it while you can!

Owner Lee Anne House  tells us to watch out for a green sriracha to come up next. This is made with a blend of serrano peppers, tomatillos and pineapple juice. Like the Peachy, it made its debut on the Bad Dog Nice Taco cart this summer. It was so well received it’s now on their Kaboom tacos and in the pimento macaroni salad, both of which are on the delivery service available Monday-Friday.12112389_1916222168602094_5300581263957082737_n

ACTIVATED SPACES’ POP-UP PROJECT TO OPEN TWO NEW DOWNTOWN RETAIL SHOPS

October 26, 2015 By Dayton937

Two new businesses are preparing to open their doors in downtown Dayton this fall.

·         Kneaded Bodies Massage, 29 W. First St.: Kneaded Bodies Massage strives to offer superior wellness services through traditional massage as well as chair massage.  In addition to massage, Kneaded Bodies will have affordable, natural skincare products available for purchase. Kneaded Bodies gives those who live and work downtown the ability to participate in their own wellness and therapeutic goals just minutes from their home or office. Kneaded Bodies Massage will host a grand opening event during November’s First Friday on November 6.
12141777_928459337226315_3120373049730987489_nBaker Salvage Co., 31 S. St. Clair St. (St. Clair Lofts): Baker Salvage Co. is a custom furniture and décor company. Their home goods are made from reclaimed wood and salvaged materials. Stock items and commission custom-built pieces are available for purchase, including farmhouse tables, coffee and side tables, signs and wall décor, headboards, and even light fixtures made from reclaimed wood, glass, and metal. Baker Salvage Co. will open in early November.

The new shops are part of the ninth retail phase of the Pop-Up Project, part of an initiative to fill downtown storefronts called Activated Spaces. This program builds on the success of the first eight phases of the Pop-Up Project, launched in November 2011, to provide potential business owners the opportunity for shorter leases at below-market rates as a way for them to jump-start their businesses and contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Dayton. Since it was started, the project has launched 21 shops (16 of which are still open), filled approximately 16,000 square feet of previously vacant space and created 42 jobs. “We are so excited to open Baker Salvage Co. and Kneaded Bodies Massage in our fall 2015 round of pop-up shops,” said Pop-Up project leader, Elise Huelskamp. “We’re confident Activated Spaces will continue to highlight the available amenities and potential for business owners to thrive downtown alongside hundreds of other businesses.”
Pop Up Shop
Pop-Up Shops from the previous phases of the project include:

Beaute Box, 116 W. Fifth St.;
Vintage Barber Shop, 110 W. Fifth St.;
Peace on Fifth, 234 Dutoit St.;
Pi Style, 37 S. St. Clair St.;
Green Baby, now located at the 2nd Street Market,
Spice Paradise and Hicks’ Barber Shop & Shave Parlor, both located at 16 Brown Street:
Confetti, 42 W. Fifth St;
Twist Cupcakery, 25 S. St. Clair St.;
Fronana, 27 W. First Street,
Mitosis, 14 W. First St.
In addition, Sew Dayton, 261 Wayne Ave., has expanded to a new location over twice the size of their original Pop-Up Shop location.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations Generation Dayton and UpDayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.

Chinese & Japanese Restaurant’s Moraine Location Now Under Construction

October 26, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

430641_351657294877594_1503002330_nCJ Chan’s second location is now finally under construction.  The new location was announced back in April, when they signed a lease for the 1,800 square foot location at 2747 W. Alex Bell Road, in the same strip center as the original Chappy’s Tap House.

The original CJ Chan opened up at 536 Wilmington Ave in the fall of 2010 and has earned a steady following of fans serving up a “distinctive menu featuring more than 80 sensational dishes ranging from traditional Chinese favorites and innovative specialties to classic Thai foods from across Asia, using only the freshest, most natural ingredients,” according to their website.  The restaurant has earned positive review for “huge portions, delicious food,  prices that are low and service that is fast,” if you peruse the online sites.

Construction photo’s placed on their website today confirm that  progress is finally under way.  A call to the restaurant said they hope to be open by the end of November.  cjchanmoraine

October 26, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

11219097_1190090864339881_1912366054994116623_nThe Old Arcana is hosting a multi-chef collaborative dinner on November 21, 2015 at 6pm to raise funds for the Darke County Emergency Homeless Shelter.
The Darke County Emergency Homeless Shelter is run by the Darke County Community Action Partnership and is funded by the Homeless Crisis Response Program (HCRP) Grant from the state, the Darke County United Way and local donations. Due to aging and normal wear and tear, the shelter is in need of additional assistance. A portion of the proceeds from the THANKS FOR GIVING TASTING DINNER ticket sales will be donated directly to the shelter.

The small plate, 5-course tasting menu will be presented by Chef Jeffrey Besecker (The Old Arcana), Chef Zackary Weiner (Rue Dumaine, Taste, Olive), and Brendon Miller (Lucky’s Tap Room & Eatery, Roost). With all this local talent in the same kitchen, you can guarantee delicious tastes and textures in each course with spectacular presentation and a whole lot of personality. Join this talented bunch for a rock star culinary experience and and support a worthy cause in the process.

Tickets are $50 and can be bought online.
  • The Old Arcana is located at 109 W. George St., Arcanum, Ohio 45304, about 40 minutes from Dayton.

FilmDayton Awards $1000 To “Pitch It” winner.

October 24, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

Jeremey GingrichPitchItWinner

Jacob Stuart, Jeremey Gingrich and Alvaro Leite

A film pitch is a basically a sales pitch for a film, tv show or other creative project. Depending on whom you are pitching to and what the purpose of the film pitch is, your pitch may be longer or shorter. A film pitch can range from a one sentence description of your project to a longer telling that should include the main elements of the story, the basic premise, plot points, the main characters, time period, setting and locations.

Last night the 7th Annual Eichelberger FilmFestival kicked off at the Dayton Convention Center with our annual Pitch It! The stories ranged from a psychotherapist’s culture shock in Beijing, to a disgraced conservative pundit returning to his hometown to mend relationships and a horror/fantasy about a girl who uses her creativity and newfound ability to ‘phase’ through colors to survive attacks from the malevolent entity that caused the disappearance of her dad and death of her mom.

The judges: Alvoro Leite, a filmmaker and screenwriter, who attended film school at Wright State University where he got hisBFA in Motion Pictures Production and currently a teacher at Stivers School for the Arts and Jacob N. Stuart, an award-winning and represented screenwriter. He has had OVER 15 scripts optioned and/or produced to screen, airing in OVER 7 different countries. Jacob is the Founder of Screenwriting Staffing.

In a FilmDayton tradition, each contestant had 2 minutes to “pitch” their idea and then judges asked questions eliciting further details on plot, character development, target audiences and more. After careful consideration the winning pitch was selected:

“Dean and Max, late 20’s best friends since college, are about to embark on the Never Ending Tour – Bob Dylan’s touring frenzy from the year 2000 – on a road trip through the Western United States (8 shows, 6 states in 10 days), meeting the colorful characters you’re bound to meet on such a tour, as they also try to cope with Dean’s impending divorce of his wife of 6 years and the recent death of Max’s father.

Beavercreek filmmaker Jeremey Gingrich was awarded $1000 to kickstart his film into production. And the FilmDayton festival was official underway, with 3 screenings last night at The Neon. The fest continues with documentaries, shorts, features at The Neon and workshops today and Sunday at ThinkTV. For the full scheudle, please visit FilmDayton’s website.
