Daytonians Halloween is just around the corner and there are many active events to help celebrate this holiday! The Halloween Happening Event takes place at Lost Creek Reserve in Troy this Saturday, October 24 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Guests of all ages are invited to drop by and experience a crisp, fall night hike around the historic Knoop farm aglow with jack-o’-lanterns, deeming this ‘the jack-o’-lantern hike’. Be sure to stop by the barn at the end of the hike to enjoy some delicious fall treats. The corn maze will also be open from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Remember to bring a flashlight and anything else to help guide you on this festive experience. Extra bonus: the entire evening is free, Happy Halloween!

The ride starts at 7:00 p.m. Join the Sentinels for a moonlight ride, and celebrate Halloween by adding lighting to yourself or bicycle to travel the trails! Extra bonus: another free event, hooray!

After all of that evening activity on Saturday, make sure to get a goodnight’s sleep and be ready for the 3rd Annual Club IMPACT Costume 5K/10K and Monster Mile on Sunday, October 25. Help support Miamisburg’s Club IMPACT, a youth enrichment after school program. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Motivation, Perseverance, Attitude, Character and Teamwork. Club IMPACT is a free program that serves both boys and girls in grades 3-8 through the city of Miamisburg. The event takes place at Riverfront Park in Miamisburg at 4:30 p.m.  Micro chipped timing, door prizes and refreshm3rd-annual-club-impact-costume-5k-10k-and-monster-mile-cents will be available; registration begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Pay the Price For Buying Booze With Credit.

October 22, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

LiquorStoreIt may be time to stock up your liquor cabinet for the holidays now.  Starting November 1st Arrow Wines & Spirits will join with the majority of local liquor stores and add a surcharge to liquor purchased with a credit or debit card.  Mif Frank explains,  We’re one of the last stores to pass on the cost of the credit cards to the consumer.  We didn’t want to do it but with the rising cost of health care and  other operational costs, the 5% commission we make on bottles less the 2-3% credit card charges leaves us only 2% profit and we just can’t run our business on that.  That charge will only be on hard liquor, not beer, wine or low proof bottles.”

In checking with other stores in the area, Miami Valley Wine & Liquor charges 50 cents per bottle, Belmont Party Supply charges 3%, Liquor & Wine Warhouse charges 3% and Air City says it’s 50 cents per order.   So start carrying cash or get used to paying a higher price for your booze.

Want Better Relationships? Get Better At Solitude.

October 21, 2015 By Jason Harrison

I read a great Jane Porter piece this week about the importance of solitude that I suspect will have a big impact on the way I talk to my clients about their health. You should read the entire article published in Fast Company online right here.

Before diving into the relevancy of Porter’s argument, a quick reminder about the positive health effect of strong social ties. Researcher, writer, and speaker Kelly McGonigal argues persuasively that we can dramatically alter the negative effects of stress in our lives by simply thinking about it differently. Beyond just thinking about stress differently, however, McGonigal sites research which states that strong social ties can act as a sort of steroid for our resilience.

IMG_5707

No music, no radio. Just your thoughts on the open road. No motorcycle? No problem. Just turn off the noise on your next drive.

“…when you reach out to others under stress, either to seek support or to help someone else, you release more of this hormone, your stress response becomes healthier, and you actually recover faster from stress. I find this amazing, that your stress response has a built-in mechanism for stress resilience, and that mechanism is human connection.”

This is profound. And when I first heard this, I immediately began thinking differently about how to make my personal training clients stronger. I talked a lot more about calling friends, writing letters to important people, and taking time to cultivate relationships. And you know what? My success rate at helping people transform their bodies rocketed upward.

Enter Porter’s Fast Company article. Perhaps you’re wondering what a piece about solitude has to do with strong social ties, and thus, our health. Let’s take a look at Porter’s reporting.

She quotes Sherry Turkle, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher, on the link between solitude and human connection.

“How do you get from connection to isolation? You end up isolated if you don’t cultivate the capacity for solitude, the ability to be separate, to gather yourself. Solitude is where you find yourself so that you can reach out to other people and form real attachments. When we don’t have the capacity for solitude, we turn to other people in order to feel less anxious or in order to feel alive. When this happens, we’re not able to appreciate who they are. It’s as though we’re using them as spare parts to support our fragile sense of self.”

IMG_0082

My thinking soundtrack for a recent Seattle trip.

As I rapidly approach the age of forty, I find myself valuing “real attachments” with people who share my values. A younger, more insecure version of me sought out relationships with people who allowed me to feel cooler but didn’t share my values. These proved to be empty, and sometimes painful personal experiences. Now that I take more time to understand who I am and what I value, I find myself forming more real attachments. Not coincidentally, I’m also stronger and healthier than I was at any point in my twenties.

This isn’t hocus pocus. It’s not an episode of Oprah. There’s no prize under your seat. This is the softer side of strength and we ignore it to our own detriment.

If the benefits of solitude are real, then what are some concrete measures we can enact to make the most of it?

  1. If you travel for work, listen or read instead of watch. I traveled to Seattle this week and came home with a notebook full of ideas for my own business. I resisted the urge to kill time with a movie, and instead let my mind wander along with John Coltrane. Planes are ideal for this type of pondering because we don’t often have the chance to just sit with our own thoughts.
  2. Take a walk. Busy people often ignore one of the best exercises they can because they don’t view it as intense. But walking–especially outside–has a whole host of benefits for mind and body.
  3. Don’t be afraid of silence. On your next drive to work, don’t turn on the radio. Don’t plug in your iPhone. Just drive. Pay attention to what you’re doing of course, but be alone with your thoughts.
  4. “Make an artist date.” This is directly from the Porter piece itself (which again, you should read in its entirety). Essentially this is scheduled time for yourself once a week when you are alone at a museum, on a scenic walk, or anywhere you can experience something new or interesting. I’ve recommended a version of this to executives that I coach who often resist because they view it as a waste of time. Those who have made the time for their version of an artist date, however, report having more space in their brains for strategic, deep thinking. This is something all of us could use, from homemaker to C-Suite mover and shaker.

It’s the Great Pumpkin…Spice!

October 20, 2015 By Dayton937

No doubt one of the most popular flavors that takes this season by storm is that of Pumpkin Spice. Most people either love it or hate it.  We here on the Food Adventures Crew vote that we LOVE it and our Gem City gives us plenty of options to indulge! So grab your hoodies, yoga pants and Uggs as we indulge in the areas best seasonal coffees and treats!

Starbucks, the founder of the "PSL", serves up a great latte hot or iced!

Starbucks, the founder of the “PSL”, serves up a great latte hot or iced!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The Pumpkin Spice Latte (aka “PSL”) craze started back in 2003 when Starbucks first launched their newest flavor. Up until that time, their recipe remained unchanged.   The result was Starbucks most successful seasonal item.. EVER.  This year they launched their all natural flavorings for their PSL and this method proves to be superior.

— Many chains, including Saxbys, and local coffee spots  have also created their own versions embracing the higher quality of all natural flavorings.

— Apple and Sriracha are the #2 and #3 most popular fall coffee flavors, respectively.

Hungry Jax, The Big Ragu and Chef House took on the challenge to test out some of areas beloved javas.  So if we seem a little hyper,  you’ll know why!

MUST DRINKS!:

— STARBUCKS: Known as the creator of this seasonal phenomenon, we felt that starting off with them would be most fitting. Starbucks continues to serve up a quality latte proving that their changes to all natural ingredients was a good move! Hot or iced you’ll get your daily caffeine kick with a delightful seasonal twist!

— DOROTHY LANE MARKET: Hands down this latte blew us away as one of the best ones in the area! DLM also prides themselves on an all natural version. Made with real pumpkin and spices this is the quintessential version of “Autumn in a Cup”! In addition, we need to give a shout out to another hit seasonal drink of theirs, the DLM Maple Apple Cider made with their own DLM 100% maple syrup! As always, DLM never disappoints!

DLM's all natural flavorings make us like this drink a latte!

DLM’s all natural flavorings make us like this drink a latte!

— WINAN’S CHOCOLATES and COFFEES: This local chain has a Fall drink menu that will make you salivate! Their Pumpkin Pie Latte is more subtle in flavors but leaves your feeling warm and toasty. Other seasonal drinks that they offer are an Ultimate Apple Cider, Stuffed Chai Latte, Hot Buttered Toffee Latte, the Autumn Twilight, and a S’mores Latte! Add any of their amazing chocolates and you’ll be experiencing ultimate indulgence!

— GHOSTLIGHT COFFEE: Located in Historic South Park at 1202 Wayne Ave in Dayton, Ghostlight Coffee maybe not be a chain, but this java stop would no doubt hold it’s own in a coffee throw down! Their seasonal creation is a Pumpkin Coconut Latte made with their own syrup! And Food Adventures got the latest scoop that Ghostlight is currently creating a Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Latte that will kick off soon!  While you’re there, grab a jar of Hawthorne Homestead’s “Lumberjack Pumpkin Butter”!

— THE BOSTON STOKER: One of our most coveted local coffee roasters takes a different spin on fall flavors! While Boston Stoker does not offer a pumpkin spice latte, this season they will whip you up an Orange Honey Latte or Cold Brew Horchata! One of our favorite things to do at Boston Stoker is to ask the barista’s what their favorite drink creation is.  Hungry Jax got to experience a talented barista’s secret iced tea that tasted JUST like an apple pie! So don’t hesitate to go off the menu and trust the creative minds behind that coffee bar!

— SAXBYS: Yes yes, it’s another chain. But it’s important to honor the places that are taking pride in delivering a quality product. And Saxbys is doing just that. They too have jumped on the natural flavorings chain and their Pumpkin Spice Latte packs on the seasonal flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg!

We would be remiss if we didn’t highlight at least some of the seasonal pumpkin treats that are being served up in the area! So after you’ve grabbed your cup of joe, hit up these places to further your pumpkin spice addiction!   So here are a few of our patented MUST EATS for a pumpkin spiced Food Adventure…

Pumpkin Cookie with Caramel Icing is one of the many seasonal treats at DLM!

Pumpkin Cookie with Caramel Icing is one of the many seasonal treats at DLM!

MUST EATS:

— DOROTHY LANE MARKET: No one should be surprised that this local powerhouse also dominates in their bakery department.  To compliment your latte, you can choose to indulge in their caramel frosted pumpkin cookie, pumpkin roll or even a pumpkin cupcake! And let’s not forget “Aunt Dorothy’s Pumpkin Pie” all made from scratch and in house!

— ASHLEY’S PASTRY SHOP: We’re frequent flyers at Ashley’s! And their seasonal treats just keep calling to us! Located at 21 Park Ave in Oakwood, this bakery has something for everyone! Their seasonal delights include pumpkin iced cookies, muffins, cakes, pies, rolls and even pumpkin cheesecake!

— BILL’S DONUTS: This well known Centerville donut shop has also embraced the pumpkin craze! You can choose form a cinnamon sugar pumpkin donut or a glazed pumpkin donut! Or do what we did and don’t choose at all and eat both…

Dunkin' Donut's Pumpkin Muffin is a seasonal favorite!

Dunkin’ Donut’s Pumpkin Muffin is a seasonal favorite!

— DUNKIN’ DONUTS: While Dunkin’ does offer a pumpkin spice latte, we actually are even bigger fans of their pumpkin muffins! This moist muffin is topped with a cinnamon crumb topping and a drizzle of frosting. With some new locations in the area, we want to give a shout out to the longer established Dunkin’ Donuts location on Rt 741 buy the Dayton Mall! Their service is always top notch!

So there you have it fellow pumpkin spice lovers! So many options of seasonal drinks and treats in our area! Be sure to check these out and let us know what others you have grown to love!  Lots of these flavors will go into the fall and some beyond Thanksgiving.

It’s Sweetest Day!

October 17, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

images-13Sweetest Day is an original American holiday not based on any group’s religious tradition. It’s simply a reminder that a thoughtful word, deed or small gift enriches the life of the recipient as well as the person giving it.

Sweetest Day, observed on the 3rd Saturday in the month of October has its origin in Cleveland in 1922, during the Great Depression.  Legend has it that Sweetest Day was established by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio, candy company employee who wanted to bring happiness to the lives of those who often were forgotten. Kingston and others distributed candy and small gifts to orphans, people confined to their homes and others to show them that someone cared.

In the early 1930s, movie stars got into the act. Ann Pennington distributed candy to 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys, and Theda Bara gave candy to theater-goers and patients in Cleveland hospitals.

In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer broadened to include everyone from family members to sweethearts and coworkers to acquaintances.

Observance of Sweetest Day is still most prevalent in the Great Lakes region where the holiday originated, including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. But today, the once-regional celebration of Sweetest Day has spread throughout the country.

Sweetest Day celebrations are similar to Valentine’s Day in most locations, with the most popular gifts and acknowledgements being cards, flowers, chocolates and candy.  Hallmark first made Sweetest Day cards in the mid-1960s.

Make Strides This Weekend!

October 16, 2015 By Melissa Ledinsky

Daytonians we are in full fall swing with the cool crisp air and the brilliant colors of mother nature! This weekend is the perfect time to take advantage of fall’s beauty by doing something active outdoors. There is a very special event happening this Saturday and it is going on downtown. You bet it involves being active and being outside!

American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

On Saturday, October 17 The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk kicks off at 8:00 a.m. The walk takes place at Fifth Third Field. You can help finish the fight against breast cancer by walking with American Cancer Society Making Strides of Dayton. Join more than one million people each year who are helping to end breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities with a shared determination to finish the fight. By participating in this noncompetitive 5K walk you will help support everyone in every community touched by breast cancer, and this is very powerful! You will help those who are currently dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education and prevention, and of course, the incredible survivors of breast cancer.

Making Strides

Every Making Strides event is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors as well as raise awareness about the disease. In addition to this, these walks help generate funds through donations to the American Cancer Society. These donations are then used to help save lives from breast cancer by funding groundbreaking breast cancer research, providing free comprehensive information and support, and helping people take steps to reduce their risk of the disease or find it early when it’s most treatable. This disease is one that surely hits home and we all can help contribute to ending it by taking some time to exercise together and help build community support!

Making Strides

Let’s unite together this Saturday morning and make strides for one exceptional cause! The power of each other is unlike any other, let us come together and generate positive energy to do our part in ending breast cancer. Time to get out and get moving Dayton!
