‘The Wiz’ – Sinclair Community College – Ease On Into the Groove

October 15, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Sinclair Community College delivers an incredibly appealing production of composer Charlie Smalls and librettist William P. Brown’s Tony Award-winning 1975 musical “The Wiz.”

sinclair wiz

Sinclair Community College’s production of “The Wiz” features Vanae Pate as Dorothy along with (left to right) Brennan Paulin as the Tin Man, David Brandt as the Lion, and Naman Clark as the Scarecrow. (Contributed photo by Patti Celek)

A delightfully soulful retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” “The Wiz” presents a refreshing African-American spin on the universal tale of friendship, self-discovery and inner strength. Thankfully, director Chris Harmon doesn’t shy away from embracing the plentiful R&B vibes permeating nearly every inch of the peppy, marvelously tuneful material performed by an over 40-member cast. In fact, he astutely brings the music to the forefront by consistently placing the actors beyond the proscenium to perform at the edge of the stage and also having them occasionally venture into the aisles for greater immediacy. Harmon also enjoyably spoofs the show’s ‘70s sensibilities. When the smooth grooves of “A Rested Body is a Rested Mind” particularly arises late in Act 2, a group of male dancers (dressed in hip period attire by costumer Kathleen Hotmer) channels “Saturday Night Fever” and recalls the satiric savvy of the hilarious Broadway musical “Xanadu.” By and large, this “Wiz” doesn’t take itself too seriously which certainly keeps spirits high and the laughter contagious.

As the innocent, impressionable Dorothy, the lovely Vanae Pate brings an introspective sweetness to her fine solos (the stirring “Be a Lion” is beautifully motivating) and an engaging sense of wonder overall. Even so, she also understands the importance of not having Dorothy be a pushover as she comprehends and navigates her new surroundings. Naman Clark (Scarecrow), Brennan Paulin (Tin Man) and David E. Brandt (Lion) shine individually and collectively. Brandt particularly offers a breakthrough performance geared toward the Lion’s idiosyncrasies and insecurities with a slick New Jersey salesman persona thrown in for good measure. Sha-Lemar Davis is a bundle of energy and sass as the kooky Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North. The feisty, vocally strong Samantha Wright-Norman, clad in fiery red, wonderfully dominates as the larger-than-life Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West. As Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, Anna Masla charms with beguiling delicacy and vocal passion while rendering the gorgeous ballad “Believe in Yourself.” Malcolm Walker, mesmerizing in the rousing, gospel-driven “Y’all Got It!,” exuberantly embodies the eccentric, intimidating titular role accented by clever shades of Bob Fosse and James Brown. The cast also features Shaun Diggs as the Gatekeeper, Erin Waldon as Aunt Em, Nabachwa Ssensalo as the Kalidah Queen, Maegan Lopez as Lord High Underling, and the cutely cohesive Yellow Brick Road comprised of André Tomlinson, Bryana Bentley, Greyson Calvert, and Rebecca Henry.

In addition, choreographer Rodney Veal expertly creates flavorfully retro routines with contemporary flourishes. The uplifting, liberating “Everybody Rejoice” is a lively, toe-tapping standout, but the terrific inclusions of Stivers School for the Arts dancers as the Tornado, Poppies and Winged Monkeys and the South Dayton Dance Theatre troupe as the Emerald City Dancers are added benefits. Music director David McKibben, scenic designer Terry Stump’s scaffolding set, Gina Neuerer’s vibrant lighting design, and Dr. Kenneth Kohlenberg’s excellent 17-piece orchestra are also noteworthy elements of this truly entertaining showcase. From now until Saturday consider Sinclair your prime ticket to Funkytown.

“The Wiz” continues through Oct. 17 in Blair Hall Theatre of Sinclair Community College, Building 2, 444 W. Third St., Dayton. Performances are Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Act One: 80 minutes; Act Two: 55 minutes. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors with the exception of the special Throwback Thursday performance (which will be American Sign Language interpreted) when all seats cost $10. For tickets or more information, call Sinclair Box Office at (937) 512-2808 or visit www.sinclair.edu/tickets.

Dog’s Breath Tavern Hosts “Buckets & Trucks”

October 14, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

“Buckets and Trucks” every Thursday in October

Each Thursday, for the rest of October, The Dogs Breath Tavern in Kettering will be featuring an event called “Buckets & Trucks.”   On these nights, a couple of featured food trucks will invade the parking lot on 1912 E. Whipp Rd., and the bar will host domestic buckets of beer for 11 bucks.

October 15th, the featured Food Trucks will be Hunger Paynes and Dayton Urban BBQ.  It promises to be a good night for a Food Adventure.  Trucks will be ready to serve by 5pm and will be there until about 9pm.

Hunger Paynes is known for their “croquette” style menu and the BBQ from Dayton Urban is terrific, especially the pulled pork sandwich.

Here are our TOP 5 MUST EATS for the night:

— PULLED PORK SANDWICH from DAYTON URBAN BBQ:
Good, and a little sloppy when that cole slaw is added.  You won’t care, it is worth every bite.

— SALMON CROQUETTES from HUNGER PAYNES:
Crunchy on the outside, soft and tasty on the inside.  A Food Adventure favorite.

Dayton Urban BBQ Food Truck will be at Dog’s Breath on Thursday 5pm

— DOUBLE BUTTER BURGER from DOG’S BREATH TAVERN:
A Mountainous burger, slapped with cheese in between.  A Big burger that will fill you up, and make you smile.

— MAC n CHEESE CROQUETTES from HUNGER PAYNES:
Gooey, and hot.  Love it served on a handful of homemade Saratoga chips.

— HOMEMADE “DOG BONES” from DOG’S BREATH TAVERN:
Flavors from Philly cheesesteak, to pulled pork and ham n cheese, these hand rolled egg rolls are stuffed with various favorite fillings on site.

Come out to Dog’s Breath Tavern for a chance to visit two great food trucks, and get some drink specials.  Please note that menus are subject to change and that new creations may be better than anything we have tasted yet!  We hope we gave you a tip on what to look for for a great Food Adventure this Thursday evening.

So take advantage of “Buckets and Trucks” every Thursday in October at Dog’s Breath Tavern.

Stay Well on the Road

October 14, 2015 By Jason Harrison

Traveling for work can be among the most disruptive factors to staying fit because it can introduce variables for which even the most disciplined and organized find it difficult to account. So let’s walk through how to stay well on the road with an eye toward nutrition, fitness, and wellness.

airport

Nutrition

  • Good — I trained a client in D.C. who traveled often to the middle of Indiana. Her food options were limited mostly to fast food and a Super Walmart twenty minutes away. I coached her to do the best she could with what was available. That meant approximating to the extent possible a mix of protein, healthy fats, and vegetables at every meal—even using McDonald’s in a pinch. (Think Egg McMuffin with a side salad or fruit cup). Her travel wasn’t ideal, but she was able to do just enough to stay healthy.
  • Better — If you’re traveling in a bigger city, your options for food even if you don’t have access to a grocery are often better. Fast food chains like Sweetgreen (D.C., Boston, L.A., New York, Philly) are thriving precisely because they offer health-conscious people affordable, fast, and convenient ways of eating well.
  • Best — You’re able to identify a grocery store near where you’re working or staying that has a good selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and delicatessen. Using a grocery on the road can allow you to mainly stick with a nutrition plan consisting of primarily whole foods and fresh ingredients. Even if your work travel involves command performance dinners, you’ll be able to control your breakfast and lunch by shopping for your food daily.
IMG_5825

Stay well even if you have to spend time in the air.

Fitness

  • Good — If you’re stuck in a hotel that doesn’t have even a modest gym, you can still maintain some mobility and strength on the road. Search YouTube for videos from people like Neghar Fonooni and Jen Sinkler for bodyweight routines. Another great option on the road that would complement your wellness goals would be downloading a good yoga app and doing some sort of practice daily.
  • Better — One of the things about the fittest people you know is that they think about their fitness when planning trips. So, for example, they’ll identify a favorite hotel by how good the gym is. This might take some trial and error, but you too can figure out which hotels have the best gyms for your fitness needs. Stay at those places when you can, use the gym, and maintain or even enhance your fitness on the road.
  • Best — Find a local gym convenient to where you’re staying or working. If you belong to a national chain, you often can work out for free when you’re on the road. (I’ve found that even if you’re not a member, many clubs will allow you to work out for free if you just tell them that you’re visiting). You might even treat yourself to a personal training session when you’re traveling. Some folks even have a roster of trainers around the country in the different cities to which they travel.

Wellness

  • Good — You’re mindful of how you’re feeling and you do your best to get to bed at a reasonable hour. Just as you might have chosen your hotel for the gym accommodations, you might also be aware of which dwelling on the road has the best blackout shades and temperature controls to allow you to sleep in a cool, dark room. You limit caffeine consumption to the morning, and you don’t drink too late into the evening because alcohol can act as a sleep disrupting stimulant.

beerontap

  • Better — You make it a point not only to sleep well, but to have some experience outside of work during your travel. Given the tight schedules often associated with being on the road for work, this can be difficult. But you can try things like walking a few extra blocks to your first meeting so the route takes you by an interesting building, popping into a photography exhibit for 15 minutes, or researching an interesting restaurant that we don’t have here in Dayton.
  • Best — In addition to the above, you develop a wellness friendly routine, or ritual even, that allows you to maximize relaxation and sleep, while also minimizing anxiety and stress. You have a “go bag” ready at all times that you take with you on your business trips. It consists of tea from home, your favorite soaps, and guilty pleasure magazines that you can read to relax before bed. You’ve come to grips with the fact that travel is a part of your professional way of life, so you’ve developed patterns specifically designed to maximize your wellness on the road. Work travel becomes a way of recharging, giving you a welcomed opportunity to do strategic thinking.

One of the mistakes I see often is working professionals pretending that travel is not fundamental to their work life. If you’re on the road every month, then you ought to take some time today to figure out how to stay healthy in hotels, airports, and train stations. Your nutrition, fitness, and wellness options might not be optimal, but with a little planning you can maintain or even enhance your health with travel.

Dayton Police Launch “Safe Exchange” Spots

October 12, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

01398879-30bf-4f92-bb51-39520b7daf57The Dayton Police Department’s East Patrol Operations Division announces the launch of the Safe Exchange program. Safe Exchange is designed to provide a safe location for families to make custodial exchanges and to assist residents with the exchange of products purchased or sold online. This service is part of the Dayton Police Department’s commitment to community safety.

There are now designated areas at East Patrol Operations Division North (417 E. Helena St.) and East Patrol Operations Division South (2721 Wayne Ave.) where online buyers/sellers and parents or guardians can meet to make needed exchanges.

Once both parties have agreed on exchange terms, they may meet at one of the two locations and look for the “Safe Exchange Zone” sign near the main entrance. The building lobby at the either location will be available during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday). If the lobby is not accessible, the parking lot is also a safe exchange zone because it is monitored and recorded by video surveillance. In addition, a peace officer may be requested to be present during the exchange by calling 333-COPS.

No firearms are permitted anywhere on Dayton Police Department property. The Department will not be utilized to make transactions of illegal products, dangerous or deadly weapons, or any other dangerous materials.

While the Safe Exchange program has been established to provide a safe area for online buyers and sellers to meet, it is important to remember that the people you meet online are strangers and may not have your best interests in mind.

Here is some additional information to consider when making or planning online purchases or transactions:
Use websites you are familiar with.
Never provide personal information over the Internet.
Never make an online purchase using a credit card on a site that does not have an SSL.
When taking photos, utilize the cut and paste method from a Word document. This will make it difficult to utilize GPS location programs.
Use photos only of the item(s) you are selling. Other items in the background can represent additional targets for a would-be criminal.
Ask a lot of questions.
Don’t go to a transaction alone, and show up early.

Free Shuttle Offers Alternative Option for Oregon District Parking

October 9, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

ODShuttleWith downtown Dayton’s Oregon District thriving and first-floor retail occupancy more than 95 percent, community leaders are taking steps to alleviate congested parking lots in the popular entertainment area. The Downtown Dayton Partnership, Oregon District Business Association (ODBA), City of Dayton, ABM Parking Services, and Citywide Development Corp. are teaming up to offer low-cost parking along with complimentary shuttle service.

Oregon District visitors may now park in the Transportation Center Garage, located at the corner of Fifth and Jefferson streets between The Neon movie theater and the Convention Center, at a reduced $3 rate Fridays and Saturdays between 5 pm and 1 am.

To help ensure visitors arrive at their destinations quickly and efficiently, a complimentary shuttle will transport visitors from the garage to several stops throughout the Oregon District. The shuttle will run continuously, picking people back up from those stops and returning them to the garage. The hop-on, hop-off shuttle will make several stops throughout the Oregon District, helping patrons reach many businesses in a short amount of time. Shuttle hours on Fridays and Saturdays will be 5 pm to 1 am.

PostcardBack

“The Oregon District has never been a more popular destination for shopping, dining, brewpubs and other activities,” said ODBA President Mike Martin. “With our growing number of new businesses and our mainstays expanding, we’re seeing lots of new guests to downtown and the Oregon District, and we want to ensure all our patrons – old and new – can easily find a parking space and quickly get to their favorite Oregon District destinations.”

The garage also is within easy walking distance. For example, from the garage, it’s only a 5-minute walk to Jay’s Seafood Restaurant, a 7-minute walk to Toxic Brewing Co., and 9 minutes to walk to the Dublin Pub. The reduced garage rate and complimentary shuttle will launch Friday, October 16.

“How long do you usually spend driving around looking for a space?” said Robin Sassenberg, owner of The Trolley Stop at 530 E. Fifth St. “With the garage, you arrive downtown, park in the garage, relax in the shuttle or walk a few blocks, and that’s it. You can hop on and hop off the shuttle to get to and from many locations quickly. It’s simple and easy.

“I anticipate the shuttle will become a very popular choice in the coming cold weather,” she said.

More information on the Oregon District Shuttle, including a map of its route and stops can be found online.. Find locations and rates for other garages, public lots, and more parking information online at www.EasyParkDowntown.org.

There are a lot of different things to do around the community such as hayrides, hikes, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, 5K/10K runs, and numerous festivals. Fall is truly a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors and soak up all of the natural goodness that surrounds our community. This weekend spend your time with two very worthy walking events and a gluten free celebration that reaps fall’s bounty!

Walk to End Alzheimers

Saturday, October 10 marks the annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease care, support and research. The walk is done on behalf of the more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and their over 15 million caregivers. The walk is held each year in more than 600 communities nationwide. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Everyone can find a reason to end Alzheimer’s, so sign up for the walk this Saturday, and help put a stop to the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death! Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the 2 mile walk begins at 10:15 a.m. at Fifth Third Field. A worthy cause and a great way to be active Saturday morning!

Also on Saturday, October 10 is the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association’s Howl O Ween Dog Walk. This is going to be one fun event! Also known as the Howl Walk, this is the 10th annual fundraiser for certified therapy pets.

mvPTa Howl o Ween Dog Walk

There will be everything from the world’s smallest pet therapy horse to freestyle dancing dogs, yes you read that correctly, freestyle dancing dogs! The 2 mile Howl Walk takes place at the beautiful Indian Riffle Park. This is a fabulous opportunity to exercise and socialize your four legged friend. If you like, dress your dog in his or her favorite costume. Blend with the crowd or compete for various prizes for dog and/or owner costumes. There will also be raffle baskets of valuable goodies, door prizes, a special drawing for early registrants, food vendors, merchandise, and dog rescue adoption organizations. The cost for this event is $35 and once again supports a very noble cause. The agenda for the morning festivities is registration begins at 9:00 a.m., a blessing of the animals at 10:00 a.m., the Howl Walk takes off at 10:05 a.m., and the costume parade and prizes starts at 11:00 a.m. Come on out and bring your furry friend for a very memorable experience!

After an active morning head over to Dorothy Lane Market Washington Square for The Celebrate Gluten Free 12115705_686765544756459_7085380553528081660_nEvent from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Extra bonus is that it is free, hooray! Celebrate Gluten Free brings together more than 20 vendors who provide everything from gluten-free baked goods, snacks, condiments, and beverages to supplements and skin care items.  There will also be two free seminars at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Lane Market  Culinary Center the day of the event. This is a wonderful opportunity to become more educated about gluten free living and how it has the potential to impact your health (and active life) in a positive manner. Yours truly will be there, so come find me and introduce yourself! The best part of all is that you can have your cake (gluten free, of course), and eat it, too after your morning walks!

That’s the weekend wrap up of some different events that all support excellent causes and an active, healthy lifestyle. Two unique walks that are guaranteed to be a good time while helping people and pets in our community, and a celebration of nutrition and wellness, this is going to be one spectacular weekend! Let’s get out, get moving, and take care of each other Dayton!

Top 5 Must Eats at this Weekend’s Sauerkraut Festival

October 9, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Get the German Sundae and it supports the American Legion Hall

More than seven tons of  sauerkraut is expected to be served at this weekend’s Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville.  But, this isn’t some locally named gig.  They call it the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival, so listen up from Cleveland to Chillicothe and from Pisgah to Perrysburg.  These hungry people are coming to celebrate the German food and heritage, and of course, the almighty Sauerkraut.  That’s right, they are all on a Food Adventure.  Who knows better about food than Hungry Jax, The Big Ragu and Chef House?

Let’s get down to it and discover what all the fuss is about the Sauerkraut Festival.  Let’s head on down, close to where State Route 48 meets State Route 42.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— More than 350,000 people are expected to attend with over 400 vendors of all sorts from more than 30 states.

WHEN: Always the 2nd weekend in October, this year’s dates are:
— Saturday, October 10th 9:00am – 8:00pm
— Sunday, October 11th 9:00am – 6:00pm

#1 Must Eat – Sauerkraut Donuts

WHERE:  Downtown Waynesville, North Main Street area.  LOTS of WALKING as the festival stretches the entire length of Downtown

What the heck is Sauerkraut?  Answer : Fermented cabbage.  Some complain about the smell or the taste.  But we cut right through the whiners and found the best eats… even the crankiest festival goer will enjoy these top 5 mouthwatering suggestions…

Drum roll please, strike up the Oompa band as Food Adventures delivers our patented Top 5 MUST EATS for The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival.

MUST EATS:

— SAUERKRAUT DONUTS:  #1 by a landslide… not even close.  Warm, soft, sugary and sweet.  They are amazing and we aren’t sure where the sauerkraut is, but the donuts are tremendous.   Get these damn donuts if you do nothing else all day.  But we warn you, get there early as the line get long.  Kids love them, and adults love them more…

— PUMPKIN FUDGE:  Find the fudge trolley.  Run, don’t walk.  They have various fudges, but here is the unique opportunity to get some pumpkin fudge.  When else in a Food Adventure do you get that chance?  Very rich and delicious, the fudge will have you craving something to drink, but you wont be sure what you want to drink.

Pumpkin Fudge – oh yeah, take some home too

— GERMAN SUNDAE: This is a bowl of chopped Potatoes, Sauerkraut, Cheddar Cheese, Sour Cream, Bacon Bits and an olive.  It looks like a sundae, but the bowl is a hearty, savory and salty favorite.  Can’t lose with this winner.  Great for sharing on the go.. a walking treat.

— HAWG DAWG:  A Giant hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard.  One of the biggest dogs we have even seen and stop with the jokes.  Take a bite outta this wienee and support Waynesville Athletic Charities.

— PULLED PORK  & KRAUT POTATO SKINS:  The dark horse out of nowhere, is the potato skins.  They have some pulled pork and sauerkraut on them, and the result is a tasty twist on your typical potato skins.  Worth a try, they are one-of-a-kind.

There are so many more food choices, but these are our TOP 5 MUST EATS for the fest.   Please note, some area spots like Stone House Tavern may have a limited or adjusted menu during the festival.  Our advice… GET THERE EARLY.. you won’t beat the crowd, but the crowd will be slightly less.
