After 60 Years We Bid Adieu To Hara Arena

Hara Arena-Logo on Building_3We all knew it was coming, and yet the news still hurts.  Hara Arena will close its doors Aug 27th.

 

The 5,500-seat multi-purpose arena that once was home to Dayton Jets basketball team and Dayton Gems,  Dayton Blue Hawks, Dayton Owls, Dayton Bombers, Dayton Ice Bandits, Dayton Demonz, and Dayton Demolition ice hockey teams  has officially announced it’s closing.

“We are painfully aware of the loss this announcement will generate, which is why we have fought so long and hard to prevent it,” says Karen Wampler, Hara’s marketing director.

The site was originally the family-owned fruit orchard of Harold and Ralph Wampler.The name stems from HA from Harold and RA from Ralph. In 1956, the Wampler Ballroom was erected, which still stands today in the six-building complex. The arena itself opened in 1964. The original plans did not include an ice rink, but were changed to accommodate the Dayton Gems who were looking for a home arena. The complex now spans 165,000 square feet (15,300 m2) which consists of the main arena, four exhibition halls, a conference center, a pub and a golf course.hamvention_2012-3

This arena is where Wayne Gretzky played his first professional hockey game; a pre-season game between the Indianapolis Racers and the Cincinnati Stingers, on September 27, 1978.  Hara was also the home to  Sesame Street Live®, L Monster Truck Winter Nationals®, the Midwest Ceramics Show®, The Miami Valley Home Improvement Show, The National Holiday Gift Show and a host of others.   In May and October of 2004, Hara was twice bestowed the honor of a Presidential visit from President George W. Bush.

Long the home to  The Dayton Hamvention®, we expect an announcement from them shortly. This annual convention brought thousands of visitors to the Miami Valley each year.  Hamvention organizers shared that it brought an economic impact at somewhere between $10 and $20 million during the three-day event.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Coming to Springboro

12814488_10153981550149106_1572762922506307149_nThe third-generation, family-run company has restaurants in 43 states in the U.S. and recently opened its 560th store and will be opening it’s first Dayton area eatery in Springboro this fall in the former Graeter’s space on North Main Street.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is known for their  slow smoked meats, smoked daily  in hickory wood burning pits on-site daily. They offer beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey, and marinated chicken, with an extensive array of homestyle sides from jalapeño beans, asiago cheese creamed spinach to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal along with complimentary ice cream. And kids eat free on Sunday.

Catering also seems to be a big part of their business, according to their website.  They offer boxed lunches, they’ll deliver a buffet meal as well as do full scale catering for groups of 100 or more.  logo-2

Dickey’s will be filing their permits in August and if all goes well expect to be open for business by November 1st.

Opening Week of Celebrations at Roger Glass Stadium ­Announced

16-0726-rgs-opening-weekThe opening celebrations of Roger Glass Stadium -­ Home of the Chaminade Julienne Eagles is a mix of private and public events. The $6 million dollar facility features a practice field, stadium seating that holds more than 2,100 guests, and a 99,600 sq. ft. stadium field at the corners of Longworth and Eaker Streets designed to host high school football, soccer, and lacrosse competitions, as well as professional soccer matches.

The blessing and dedication of Roger Glass Stadium will be during the school’s Meet the Eagles, a private pep rally for students and parents, on Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. This is the same event where last year, the announcement about the construction of Roger Glass Stadium was revealed.

On Friday, August 19, CJ will host Kid’s Night Under the Lights.  This invitation only event is for all students who participated in a CJ Eagles Summer Camp and 6th grade students from around the Miami Valley.Kid’s Night will be held from 7:30-9 pm with activities both at Roger Glass Stadium and the Student Conditioning Center, located across the street from the stadium.

Saturday, August 20 will be the public grand opening of Roger Glass Stadium — Home of the Chaminade Julienne Eagles with Soccer Day at CJ. The day kicks­ off with the Eagle women’s and men’s soccer teams, both JV and Varsity squads, hosting games against Butler High School. The JV women’s soccer game begins at 1 p.m. and the Varsity women’s soccer game begins at 3 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., an official ribbon­ cutting ceremony will be held on the field at Roger Glass Stadium. The JV men’s soccer game will begin after the ribbon­ cutting at 5:30 p.m. and the Varsity men’s soccer game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, August 26 is the first home football game for the Eagles against Marion Local. Kick­off is scheduled for 7 p.m. There will be a short pre­game ceremony prior to kick­off. Online ticket sales for all CJ football games bill begin Wednesday, August 10 at cjeagle.com

THE STORY AS BEST WE KNOW IT: Picking up a decade after the events of The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne begins with showing just how far off the grid the titular character (Matt Damon) has gone, since he earning a living as an underground fighter in Greece. So, when he sees former Treadstone operative Nicolette “Nicky” Parsons (Julia Stiles) only to discover she has information for him … And this information could end up causing Bourne to ask more questions with answers he may not ready to handle.


Meanwhile, CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) is alerted to Nicky’s activities when an old laptop goes off and cyber intelligence agent Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) alerts him to the problem. Now about to launch a program more intense than the Treadstone one that birthed the CIA’s prodigal son, Dewey can’t afford to have Parsons and Bourne popping up causing trouble. Thus, in addition to have teams ready to track him around the world, he has a man simply known as the Asset (Vincent Cassel) ready to strike at a moment’s notice to take care of the problem. But since he’s working very closely with Aaron Kalloor (Riz Ahmed), a Mark Zuckerberg-like head of a company called Deep Dream on its latest software release, Dewey has bigger fish to fry.


That is, if Bourne doesn’t end up frying him and everyone connected to Treadstone and the CIA’s latest Black Ops program first.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE THE MOST? Matt Damon fans; Alicia Vikander fans; Edward Snowden enthusiasts; People that enjoyed the previous Bourne films (not including that one starring a current Avengers-alum we shall not speak of)

WHO WILL HATE THIS MOVIE THE MOST? Those who are starting the notice all the similarities between the Bourne movies in terms of story and scenes; Julia Stiles fans; Those growing tired of following all the twists and turns as Bourne fills in the gaps in his backstory. 
SO IS IT GOOD, GREAT, JUST ALL RIGHT OR DOWNRIGHT AWFUL? A film that personifies the mantra “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” Jason Bourne is fine action movie that will satisfy fans of the Bourne series … Even if they’ve seen a LOT of it before. 


Over time, film franchises develop certain traits that become the selling points of their existence. In Jason Bourne, director Paul Greengrass (who also co-wrote the script) makes sure all the tentpoles are present so there’ no mistaken what film you’re watching. Unfamiliar with the Bourne movie staples checklist? It includes: 

  • Jason Bourne will ALWAYS disappear into a crowd and only one person, either his latest attempted assassin or the woman trying to possibly help him will see him right before he turns out of sight;
  • The government official in charge – in this case, Tommy Lee Jones’ Dewey – will ALWAYS have a secondary backup plan in the form of an assassin designed to take Bourne out and be willing to sacrifice the first line of defense to get them into position to kill him;
  • There will ALWAYS be a male assassin that has either a personal connection to Bourne and/or seems to be his equal since they went through similar training that he must fight in a really crowded room or underground space;
  • If you get close to Jason Bourne, you’re going to die … Or at the very least, have to go into hiding;
  • Any cell phone in a Bourne movie will at least be used once or twice to feature a U.S. government official making a veiled or direct threat that will eventually but certainly blow up in their face;
  • Bourne will suffer a series of flashbacks that will only become clear right before his final confrontation sequence;
  • The government official he is set to face off with will always try to convince Bourne he needs to “give in” to being Bourne and forget anything about being David Webb (his birth name in case you forgot);
  • Bourne will ALWAYS learn he was lied to even more than he already had learned he had been lied to before; AND
  • Bourne is ALWAYS gonna leave someone a message to let them know that if they pursue him, he’s one step ahead of them AFTER everything above happens.
Now, while all of the above sounds formulaic … Well, sorry. That doesn’t make it any less true. It also doesn’t make Jason Bourne any less entertaining once things really get rolling after a somewhat slow start.
Looking every bit like a man who has had the government trying to kill him for more than a decade (and a very in shape but definitely 45 year-old man), Damon proves himself more than still capable of making you believe in the mystique that is his character: Calculated, skilled, confused and trying to make sense of it all. When it’s time to punch, kick and/or shoot, he does. When it’s time for him to be surprised by a new revelation that the audience may or may not see coming, he’s surprised and conflicted. And everything else pretty falls into place.
Likewise, Jones plays his role like many of his male predecessors before him: Cold, calculating and calm under pressure with Cassel doing what an assassin with a vendetta against our protagonist would. Jason Bourne isn’t attempting to reinvent the wheel by any means, just make sure it is shiny and still looks good. Per her usual, Alicia Vikander is able to make her character have more meaning (both in terms of her significance to the story and her actions) than one might expect. Doing both of those things is vital to the story working, but without Vikander exhibiting skill in doing so, the film would largely fall apart, so she deserves credit for making sure that not only does not happen, but makes you wonder how her character will evolve in the Bourne universe.
In short, Jason Bourne ultimately proves you’ll remember his name … Even if you remember a little bit of this story because you’ve seen bits and pieces of it before.

A Casual Gathering of Friends

Hundreds of people come through the doors every single day. Seats are always full. There’s security, but no bouncers, and everyone is welcome. Logo


No – it’s not the next big dance club – it’s the House of Bread. Located on the near west side, and nestled in the neighborhood near a park, the river, and other partnering social service agencies, sits the small, welcoming destination. They serve a free, nutritious meal to approximately 230 men, women and children 365 days a year. Eight to 12 volunteers work the front lines everyday, as they help prepare and serve those in need of a meal.

Ambassador Tony Hall will speak at the 2016 House of Bread Gala

With food insecurity and challenging times for many in our community, House of Bread is a long-time area resource offering a simple, yet vital service – lunch. On Saturday, August 6, you can give back to this organization that has given to so many in our community by attending the House of Bread gala.

While it’s known as “the gala,” the subtitle is a “casual gathering of friends.” Executive Director Melodie Bennett shares, “Just like our mission, we keep our gala simple. We serve dinner buffet style, so our guests continue to enjoy conversation while standing in line for dinner.”


While every year guests learn something knew about the House of Bread and get fabulous deals on generously donated silent auction prizes (trips! packages! tickets! art! more!), this year the House of Bread is pleased to welcome Ambassador Tony Hall as the keynote speaker. Ambassador Hall (bio) has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, and he is well-respected as a leading authority on programs to serve the poor and hungry, and ways to move people out of homelessness. For an organization that dedicates itself to being open daily and meeting the needs of those who would otherwise go hungry, this is a perfect fit. Knowing what a powerful message he conveys, Bennett says, “I’m very excited that our group of supporters will get to hear Tony Hall speak about his work in preventing hunger!”

Lisa Stokely volunteers to lead the silent auction committee, and every year works with generous organizations and individuals to put together fabulous packages. Stokely provides some of the highlights of the auction, “Once again, the generosity of our community has reached new heights. We have so many wonderful items that we created sections this year. Bidders can shop through the entertainment section, offering concert tickets, theatre tickets and more. In the sports section there are opportunities to get to all the hottest games in town, including a private suite at Fifth Third Field for 14 guests. In the artwork section we offer original artworks by renowned Dayton artists, including Riverscape artist, Amy Deal, acrylic painter, Ron Rollins, and a sculpture in a series created by famed sculptor, Terry Welker. In our get-away section, one generous donor has given HOB incredible luxury vacation weeks for the high bidders to enjoy the US Virgin Islands, Marriott Grande Vista Resort in Orlando, and a cozy cabin in Branson, Missouri.” There’s truly something for everyone at a great price for a great cause, and I’m told that access to the silent auction itself is well worth the price of admission!

Seeking Entrepreneurs To Open Businesses In Dayton

activatedActivated Spaces, an initiative to fill downtown storefronts, is accepting applications for short-term retail and service businesses to open downtown this fall as part of the eleventh phase of its Pop-Up Shop Project. Building off the success of the first floor activation program, the team now offers Pop-Up Office.

In addition to accepting first-floor applicants, office users also may apply for space on an upper floor of a downtown building. “We’ve seen tremendous growth in the number of retail and service start-ups occupying downtown Dayton’s first-floor spaces,” said Activated Spaces program chair Melanie Wagner. “Pop-Up Office is in response to the growing number of entrepreneurs who are still looking for that boost to get started but don’t necessarily need a first-floor location. The new phase also addresses a need to fill more vacant office spaces downtown. It’s a good complement to our core users, and our volunteer team is excited to launch more retail, service and office users this fall!”

Since 2010, more than 90 start-ups have launched in the downtown core and the number of small businesses is steadily growing. The Pop-Up Office Project seeks to build on this momentum. Both Pop-Up projects match business owners and entrepreneurs with downtown property owners who have first-floor storefront or upper floor office space available for occupancy. Both programs assist new businesses with short-term leases offered at below-market rates.
Interested entrepreneurs should fill out an application, which can be downloaded at www.activatedspaces.org, and email it to Jen Cadieux at [email protected]. The application deadline is 5 pm Friday, August 19. Tenants will be selected the week of August 29, and retailers must be ready to open by the beginning of October.

Lease lengths will range from three to six months. The spaces will have varying lease rates, but will be leased below market rate. Activated Spaces’ volunteers will connect selected tenants with commercial property owners, help make the space move-in ready, and promote the business during such events as First Friday and the Holiday Festival.  Selected businesses will negotiate leasing terms directly with the selected property owner, but flexibility for the tenant is a priority. There will be a free workshop at 6 pm Wednesday, August 10 at The Entrepreneur Center (714 E. Monument Ave.) for those interested in learning more about applying for a Pop Up and starting/expanding a small business. Please RSVP to Jen Cadieux at [email protected].

Many of the businesses that have opened as part of the Pop-Up Project are still open: Beaute Box, 116 W. Fifth St.; Vintage Barbershop, 110 W. Fifth St.; Green Baby, 2nd Street Market; Spice Paradise, 16 Brown St.; Hicks’ Barber Shop, 16 Brown St.;  Twist Cupcakery, 25 S. St. Clair St.; Fronana, 27 W. 1st St; Mitosis, 14 W. 1st St. Suite 302; Baker Salvage Co, 31 S. St. Clair St.; Kneaded Bodies Massage, 29 W. 1st St; and Soccer Shots, 39 S. St. Clair St.  Since the inception of the project in 2011, more than 20,000 square feet of vacant space has been occupied and 39 new jobs have been created.

Commercial property owners interested in offering space to Pop-Up owners should contact Jen Cadieux at 937-224-1518. Once a match is made, a small stipend is available to be distributed at the discretion of the Activated Spaces team to each of the businesses each month for the first three months to assist in off-setting startup costs.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations UpDayton and Generation Dayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program, and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.

1/2 Price Pizza To Celebrate 51 Years

On August 19, 1965, after investing his life savings, Marion Glass opened a pizza restaurant at 460 Patterson Road in Dayton Ohio called Marion’s Piazza.

When Marion opened his restaurant, it was a first for pizza establishments in Dayton as he offered seating for over 200 customers in his dining room (all other pizza parlors at that time only offered carryout service with no inside dining).

Marion selected the name Marion’s Piazza because he liked the idea of an outdoor cafe but realized that this concept would not be successful in Ohio’s climate.

Marion therefore, successfully brought the outdoors inside with an Italian piazza, or courtyard, and thus the name Marion’s Piazza was born.

Marion developed a thin crust pizza (now often referred to as “Dayton Style” pizza). conversationGlass-314x400By using only the finest ingredients on his pizzas, sandwiches, pastas and salads, Marion’s Piazza soon became a Dayton favorite!

To date, Marion’s Piazza has been voted “Dayton’s Best Pizza” in over 37 local newspaper and magazine surveys and has been rated “Second In The Nation of Independent Pizza Establishments” in Pizza Today Magazine.

 

Over the years, Marion’s Piazza has grown to nine locations in the Dayton area. Since dine-in has always been king at Marion’s Piazza (the nine locations seat between 275 to over 500 each), the restaurants have been a gathering place for sports teams, birthday celebrations, reunions, graduation parties and anniversary celebrations.

A longstanding relationship with Kenley Players Summer Theater from 1966 through 1995 brought many of Hollywood’s best known stars to Dayton and to Marion’s Piazza; stars like Frankie Avalon, Mickey Rooney, Joel Gray and Sally Field to name a few.

Daytonians Rob Lowe and Martin Sheen still frequent Marion’s Piazza when in Dayton. Of the over 250 Hollywood Stars to dine at Marion’s Piazza, Henry Winkler drew the largest crowd in 1975 when over 2,000 people made reservations to see him.

 

Over the years, Marion’s Piazza has shipped thousands of its pizzas throughout the United States to former customers who have moved from the Dayton area.

Even actress Pam DCm7tloDWgAA8kyuawber, author John Jakes and singer Phyllis McGuire have had pizzas sent to them.

Although Marion’s Piazza founder Marion Glass, passed away in 2006 at the age of 92, the business continues to be owned by the Glass family and run by Marion’s son Roger Glass. Today, Marion’s Piazza is still serving its award winning pizzas the way it has for the past 51 years!

Make Time, Take Time for Yourself

If you want a different body, then you have to make the time to build it. Sometimes I think I get my messaging wrong when I try (mostly in vain) to get people off the sidelines and into the fitness game.

I spend a lot of time pushing back against the idea that fitness is complicated. There’s a lot of noise out there about what works and what doesn’t, but there’s a remarkable consensus from people who know what they’re doing around what needs to be done to make a body stronger, leaner, and more mobile. Especially in the very beginning, you need to learn basic movement patterns like the squat, hinge, push, and pull; and you need to do these movements with progressively heavier weights while also eating vegetables at every meal, protein at every meal, and starchy carbs in moderation. That combined with walking a few days a week usually yields results with which people are incredibly happy.

I find it remarkable then when people come to me and voice objections right away when I tell them what the pathway to their goals looks like.

“Oh, I can’t give up my shows.”

“I like wine too much.”

“I don’t want to join a gym.”

“I have 8-pound dumbbells. Is that enough?”

“I only have 20 minutes a day to work out.”

“Working out is boring.”

“I’m too busy.”

Do any of these sound familiar? Ever used any of these excuses yourself? Chances are if you’ve said or asked any of these things then you’re not actually committed to the process of change. You have the body you have now because your lifestyle looks a certain way. Now you’re telling me that you don’t want to change anything about your lifestyle but you want a different body? Nope. Nope. All the nopes.

You have to make the time. You have to make the effort.

Fitness isn’t so much about discipline as it is organization, but you do have to make the effort. One of the things our gym offers free with personal training is lifestyle coaching, and we walk people through a habit-based curriculum focused on nutrition and body composition. A common theme from the feedback we get is that setting the 20 minutes a day aside to think through the “lessons” feels overwhelming. The pace is slow, so the first few assignments are things like “eat slowly” or “make time for yourself today.” We’re not talking advanced calculus. But just the process of taking the time to read a little and learn about habits feels like too much because of the 20-minute time investment.

If you can’t take 20 minutes a day for yourself, and remember, we’re not even talking about changing behavior, cooking, working out, or sleeping more, then you don’t have much hope for changing your body. The very first step in body transformation is giving yourself the permission to take time for yourself. This is not vanity or narcissism or selfishness. This is the foundation for success.

Over the next week, I’m challenging you to take 20 minutes for yourself, whatever that means for you. It could be taking a walk, reading, sitting in a dark room without speaking, meditation, or organizing the next day. The point is to take 20 minutes devoted to enhancing your quality of life. No one else can do this for you. Before thinking about taking big steps (like going to the gym or eating more vegetables), see if you can take this small step: make time, take time for yourself.

FOA Families of Addicts Holds ‘Celebrating Solutions’ Fundraiser

Local non-profit organization advocating for recovery to host event in Dayton

Logo-Final_sq_noBorderRecovery advocate nonprofit FOA Families of Addicts has partnered with El Meson Restaurant for ‘Celebrating Solutions,’ an after-work fundraiser marking two years of progress in promoting recovery, providing support, and encouraging advocacy. The event will take place at El Meson (903 E. Dixie Drive) on Thursday, August 4, from 4:30 – 7 p.m.

Dayton recently made headlines as the nation’s top-ranked city for opiate overdose deaths. Despite this, FOA continues to save lives and positively impact the regional community with support and advocacy across five counties by holding support meetings that welcome anyone touched by addiction to come together for assistance, friendship, and education and providing community outreach throughout the Miami Valley. FOA stands out among mutual aid addiction organizations by providing support for the entire families and empowering individuals to find their voices and tell their stories instead of remaining anonymous, thereby working to eliminate stigmas associated with addiction. In 2016 to date, FOA’s total meeting attendance has increased 31% as FOA prepares for its 3rd annual Rally 4 Recovery on August 28 in Courthouse Square.

“Everybody knows somebody,” said FOA founder Lori Erion. “In a time where deaths and tragedy from opiate addiction are so prevalent, FOA impacts the entire family and we want to celebrate the successes. People can and do recover.”

The El Meson event will offer a host of assorted tapas and soft drinks in an open house-style environment among community partners and supporters as FOA shares its progress. “Mocktails” and cocktails will also be available for purchase.

“Everything we do here is about community and bringing people together,” said El Meson co-owner Bill Castro. “Whether it’s bringing them together through love of good food, the love that family and friends share, or in support of a cause that’s doing important work in the region, at the end of the day, it’s important to us that we help people come together. We’ve been working closely with Families of Addicts, and we’ve come up with a pretty special evening I think will be fitting of their accomplishments.”

Tickets for the event are $30; half of each ticket will go toward FOA’s mission. They can be purchased at Eventbrite.com.

Springboro, Ohio is a growing community with great schools, local businesses and, oh yes, delicious food!  The Food Adventures Crew have been indulging in these local eateries for quite some time and felt its time to start highlighting the delicious treats and the owners in this community.  And to kick off this adventure, we gleefully hit up a staple of this city, “The Donut Haus“! Ok, go grab a glass of milk and get ready to indulge!

One of our favorite things that we like to do as food bloggers is not to just highlight the food, but to highlight the people behind the food! And it is hopeful that this article does just that!  Here comes a Food Adventure.. with a hole in it.

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Panther Pride !

— Mike Hemmert, with the integral help of his partner, Barb Soupal, has owned and operated the Donut Haus, (located at 305 W Central Ave, Springboro, Ohio 45066), for 30 years!

— Mike Hemmert started his career in the food industry,  as a long time employee of McDonalds, climbing up the ladder in hopes of opening his own franchise.  However, that goal would take much longer than he wanted and dreamt of a business that he could own and operate in his own manner. He learned that Donut Haus was up for sale and recognizing that he had experience working in a bakery in the past, he saw this opportunity as the green light to his goal.  And it’s been an amazing journey ever since!

— Hemmert, a Caroll High School graduate, bought the shop from the original owners that were from Germany (hence the spelling of “Haus”) and he took this business that was already doing well in the area, to a whole new level.

— Their dedicated staff  makes 100’s of dozens of donuts a day and also sells to 6 different counties for wholesale expanding over 130 miles!

Warm & Delicious, The Apple Turnover is a favorite of Hungry Jax

— Giving back to the Community: Think that’s all a person needs to consider their business successful? Well, for as much time and attention Hemmert gives to developing the taste and quality of his products, he gives that back and then some to his dedication to the Springboro community! Hemmert has a close relationship with the local schools supplying donuts for activities, such as the Hometown Expo hosted at Springboro High School. At that expo, the Donut Haus sells traditional cake donuts for $0.25  each and you can decorate your own! This money goes to the local food pantry. This past year, 0ver 400 kids made donuts, raising $400!

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t !In addition, one of  favorite ways to give back to the youth of the community, is during .   Hemmert loves to meet with the students and provide mock interviews to help them prepare for further employment.

— Hard Working Local Teens: And don’t be surprised to find a number of his employees being local teens. Many flock to this shop not just for a job, but also to learn solid lessons in what it means to be a good employee with strong customer service skills and of course, learning the art of donut making!

— Bear Creek Donut Connection: In fact, Mike Hemmert was instrumental in helping a former employee of 8 years, Ryan Tripp, in opening up his own donut shop in Miamisburg, Bear Creek Donuts! Another delicious bakery for which would require a separate article and another glass of milk!

— More Donations: In addition to enriching the youth of Springboro, Hemmert gives back to those in need. Leftover donuts (when there are some) are never wasted. Instead they are bagged up and donated to the local food pantry. The Donut Haus also steps up during times of crisis. Most recently during the last destructive rain storms where thousands of residents in the Springboro area were without power, the Donut Haus offered up free donuts to those households and encouraged the families to come hang out inside Donut Haus to cool off and power up their cell phones. Just another way this business gives back to its patrons that support them well!

 

— Family and Kid Friendly: Want something fun to do as a family? Once a month, Donut Haus will post on the Active Springboro Facebook Group when they are hosting their free event of making your own donut! You can also catch when the community Bingo game is happening, also hosted at the Donut Haus. Need a new idea for your kid’s birthday party? Your child and friends can be “Donut Makers for a Day”! The kids get to make, fill and frost their own donuts! Now that would make for a sweet party!

We can’t pick just one !

We can go on and on about the awesome people behind this great business! So trust that when you give your patronage to the Donut Haus, not only are you going to receive an awesome product, but also you’re supporting a business that genuinely loves what they do, gives back to their community, and are pretty much living the American Dream!

— PERSIAN ROLL (topped with or without nuts): It’s like a cinnamon bun topped with the tastes of Autumn. Mmmm with maple frosting. Just get it and trust us!

— MAPLE BACON LONGJOHN: One of the rockstars of their new “specialty line” of donuts! You can never go wrong with bacon. Ever.

— APPLE FRITTER: Yet another classic done right! Just the right amount of crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside!  This could be Big Ragu’s favorite….

— STRAWBERRY DONUT: This was a special order, limited time only donut! An experiment to embrace the area’s Strawberry season during the beginning of June! HOWEVER, Hemmert recently released a post on their Facebook page that they have plans to bring these delicious gems back at least once more time this summer! So keep a look out!!

Awesomeness

Quite honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the choices at Donut Haus.  Good people, good eats, great donuts.  So swing on down and try one of our favorite shops ran by some of our favorite fellow foodies!

‘Shepherd’s Bush’ wins Dayton Playhouse FutureFest

“Shepherd’s Bush,” a captivating, humorous, romantic, and heartbreaking look at the relationship between celebrated, closeted British novelist E.M. Forster and policeman Bob Buckingham in 1930s England, received top honors Sunday, July 24 at the 26th annual Dayton Playhouse FutureFest of new, unproduced plays.

Elegantly written with cinematic tendencies by Scott C. Sickles of Forest Hills, New York, “Shepherd’s Bush” daringly explored the love between two men at a time when homosexuality was illegal in Great Britain. As Forster and Bob’s fascinating relationship progressed, Bob grew fearful and married May, a young nurse. Still, even as the Buckinghams started their life together in the titular West London neighborhood, Forster and Bob’s bond remained strong for decades in spite of secrets and lies which brought Forster and May great heartache.

The production’s excellent staged reading, fluidly directed by Michael Boyd and stage managed by Logan Dabney, featured terrifically cohesive portrayals by David Shough as Forster, Scott Knisely as Bob, Ella Wylie as May, Playhouse board president Brian Sharp as Forster’s close friend J.R. Ackerley, and Bonnie Froelich as Forster’s mother Lily. As this promising play develops, Sickles should specifically consider delving deeper into Bob’s quandary of identity, sexuality and torment, but at the same rate, he has absolutely established an engaging, Oscar Wilde-esque foundation, particularly within his witty characterizations of Forster, Ackerley and Lily. In fact, the deliciously persnickety Lily recalls the domineering Lady Bracknell of Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

“Sometime in the mid-‘90s, in a Barnes and Noble in downtown Pittsburgh, I happened upon a book called ‘The Gay Fireside Companion,’” recalled Sickles, a Pittsburgh native and the recipient of two Writers Guild of America Awards as part of the writing team of the daytime drama “General Hospital” as well as multiple Emmy and WGA Award nominations for “General Hospital” and “One Life to Live.” “It was an alphabetical listing of people, places and events in gay history. I came across the entry ‘Buckingham, Bob,’ thought it was an interesting name and began to read. I discovered that Bob was Forster’s much younger paramour and a policeman to boot, that he married a woman (whose name is not including in the listing) and that Forster eventually died in the Buckingham home holding the wife’s hand. My actual thought at the time was, ‘That’s how I’m going to die; holding the hand of the wife of the man I love.’ The rest is history.”

“Shepherd’s Bush” scored highest among six works presented July 22-24 based on judging criteria including dramatic concept, character/language, plot, page to stage, and the next stage. Forty percent of the vote was based on the judges’ initial reading of the script. The remaining 60 percent derived from the judges’ revised ranking at the festival. This year’s professional, New York-based adjudicators were journalist Peter Filichia, 1995 FutureFest-winning playwright Craig Pospisil (“Somewhere in Between”), actress/director/producer Jana Robbins, director/producer/writer Ashley Rodbro, and director/producer/writer Helen Sneed.

“‘Shepherd’s Bush’ is a very valuable play about the games people play and still have to play,” Filichia noted. “This is a play that needs to be seen.”

“There is phenomenal writing in this play,” exclaimed Sneed. “It’s fabulous and contains well-written symbolism.”
“I absolutely loved this play,” Robbins echoed. “I was deeply moved by it. It captures love that is a marriage of both the heart and the mind. This play has fully-fleshed characters and lovely dialogue. I see it as a film.”

“First of all, I am beyond honored,” reflected Sickles who received the top prize of $1,000. “It’s very exciting to receive recognition for a play I originally started writing in 1995. In the late ‘90s, we did a lot of readings of it, both for development and in hopes of getting it produced. While audiences responded well, producers and theaters were just not interested. I kept it on ice until two years ago when I submitted it to the Gulfshore Playhouse New Works Festival. Being selected for FutureFest gave me the opportunity to hear the new draft. The adjudicators gave me great feedback, so now I’m ready to make some adjustments and send it out into the world again. It’s my hope that having the Dayton Playhouse FutureFest win attached to it will encourage more theaters to read the play and consider it for their seasons. Bottom line, though, FutureFest confirms for me that after being dormant so many years ‘Shepherd’s Bush’ still has a life! That makes me so happy.”

Additionally, “Memories of the Game,” an emotionally gripping account of Alzheimer’s disease, euthanasia and addiction rattling an African-American family by Kristy Sharron Thomas of North Hollywood, California, was named Audience Favorite. The outstanding, fully staged presentation, directed by Robb Willoughby and accented with haunting transition music, featured knockout performances by Franklin Johnson as Kenneth McIntosh (an electrifying portrayal that will be talked about for years to come), Marva M.B. Williams as Karen McIntosh, Nabachwa Ssensalo as Sharon Evans, and Andre Reece Tomlinson as Michael McIntosh.

The remaining finalists chosen from across the country in a festival that notably embraced works about historical figures were: “N,” a study of race and theatrical history concerning Eugene O’Neill’s groundbreaking 1921 drama “The Emperor Jones” by 2002 FutureFest finalist Adrienne Earle Pender of Willow Spring, North Carolina and directed by Cara Hinh; “[Miss],” the story of Dr. Frances Kelsey’s struggle with the William S. Merrell Company over the introduction of thalidomide into the United States by W.L. Newkirk of Celebration, Florida and briskly directed by Cynthia Karns; “The Violin Maker,” a story of family and tradition by Christopher G. Smith of Rochester, Minnesota and co-directed by Saul Caplan and Debra Strauss; and “The Griots,” a story of race and legacy by Gwendolyn Rice of Middleton, Wisconsin and directed by longtime FutureFest planning committee member Fran Pesch. Each finalist was awarded $100. Also, this year marked the first time there were three female playwrights in contention.

The remaining casts comprised a refreshing, diverse blend of FutureFest returnees and newcomers. “N” featured Shaun Diggs as Charles Gilpin, Shyra Thomas as Florence Gilpin and Sean Gunther as Eugene O’Neill. “[Miss]” featured Jennifer Lockwood as Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey, Ted Eltzroth as Dr. Raymond Stehle/Dr. Joseph Murray, Jon Edward Cox as John, Anna Masla as Betty, a scene-stealing Charles Larkowski as repugnant Dr. Raymond Pogge, Renee Franck-Reed as Gertrude, Jennie Hawley as Mary, and Mark Anderson as Dr. Eugene Geiling/Dr. Ray Nulsen. “The Violin Maker” featured an earthy Dave Nickel as Wilhelm Mosel, Jess MaGill as Karl Mosel and Bryana Bentley as Angela Brunelle. “The Griots,” authentically designed by Chris “Red” Newman and attractively costumed by Carol Finley and Sandy Lemming, featured David E. Brandt as John Holt, Judi Earley as Ada Coalson and a vibrant Annie Pesch as Lizzie Dupree.

“I was mighty impressed with the other plays and playwrights,” Sickles added. “There was a great eclecticism in the playwrights’ voices, subjects and styles. Best of all, we all got along and, despite it being a competition, were very supportive of each other.”

Most importantly, the Playhouse’s reputation for providing an extremely hospitable experience for the finalists hasn’t waned. Sickles says the dedication and commitment of festival volunteers left an indelible impression.
“I have friends who are past FutureFest finalists,” he explained. “They told me it would be a great experience and that the theater would ‘treat you like royalty.’ They undersold it! From my perspective, the whole festival ran like a well-oiled machine from the time I got picked up at the airport all the way through the post-fest shindig. They kept us incredibly well hydrated, well fed and well caffeinated. Royalty isn’t treated this well!”

5 Tips For Restaurant Week!

dayton-restaurant-weekOriginally started in 2005 Restaurant Week has become a major event in Dayton Dining. The original concept was a 3 course meal for a set price that related to the year, say $20.16 with $1 being donated to local charities. Since I left the helm of the MVRA, the program has morphed and now includes multiple price points, chains restaurants and more casual eateries, which offer meals deals for two at various price points. I’m not sure if they still do the $1 to charity, I could find no reference to that on the MVRA website or in the promotions for this years event. They have added a night, giving you more chances to sample some of the Miami Valley’s restaurants at a discount. It kicks off Sun, July 24th and runs through Sun, July 31st. Take some time and peruse the menu’s, some eateries offer 4 courses, some add beer or wine to the offering, and be aware of the restaurant’s hours, some are closed on Sunday & Monday.

Here are our suggestions to get the most out of Restaurant Week:

 

1. Reserve Early

Popular Restaurant Week choices will be booked up quickly, so the sooner you get on the phone to make your reservations, the better. Reservations for dinner early in the week (Monday – Wednesday) tend to be easier to get than Friday and Saturday. Some of the more casual restaurants don’t take reservations, so arriving before or after the dinner rush will minimize your wait.

2. Manage Your Expectations

It is Restaurant Week and most restaurants offer fairly limited choices on the Restaurant Week menu, so if you’re a very picky eater, it might not be the best option for you. Menu’s are predetermined for price, volume and ease of service, so don’t be surprised if substitutions aren’t possible. Frequently, the Restaurant Week menu won’t include a restaurant’s “signature” dishes, but you can often order them a la carte if you’d really like to give them a try. Some menu’s may actually differ from what’s listed here, due to product availability.

3. Understand the Price

The $20.16 – 35.16 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Beverages can add up quickly, so if you’re concerned about your budget, ask about prices before you order. On the other hand, since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine. Many restaurants offer multiple price points options, so you can decide how much to spend. For the more budget challenged, check out the eateries offering to feed 2 for a set price, like Bunkers Chappy’s Tap House & McGillicuty’s.

4. Vegetarians Beware

Some of the menu’s don’t offer a lot of options for you, but you’re probably not surprised by that. On the other hand places like Christopher’s and Meadowlark always offer creative and tasty options. The tilapia or mushroom options offered by many aren’t much of a restaurant week deal.

5. Tip Your Server Well

Just because you’re getting a discount on your dinner doesn’t mean that the waiter or waitress is getting a break on their rent this month, so tip generously if you get good service. And as a former waitress, let me remind you 20% is the baseline for good service these days.

  • Teriyaki-marinated sirloin, Pacific white shrimp, all-natural chicken breast with seasonal vegetables in our seasoned court bouillon cooking style.

Slow charcoal cooking allows seasonings and flavors to penetrate the meat while imparting a mild, smoky flavor.
