‘Big Fish’ Review – Epiphany Lutheran Church – Tall Tales Terrifically Told

July 21, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

big fishThere’s no one like Edward Bloom, the traveling salesman and small town savior from Alabama who crossed paths with witches, mermaids, werewolves, and giants. His life sounds totally far-fetched, but getting to know the man behind the myths is great fun as seen in Epiphany Lutheran Church’s absolutely heartwarming local premiere of librettist John August and composer Andrew Lippa’s 2013 adaptation of “Big Fish.”
The 26th annual summer musical presentation of the Epiphany Players Drama Ministry, “Big Fish” is a whimsical account based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed 2003 Tim Burton film written by August. The relatively easygoing yet ailing Edward, happily married to the former Sandra Templeton, is thrown for a loop when his son Will presses him for answers to the fascinating tall tales he’s heard since he was a child. In his attempt to appease the soon-to-be-married Will, Edward proudly recalls his glory days, but his trips down memory lane are not without heartache or disagreement. As Edward nears the end of his life, Will, expecting a child of his own, ultimately grasps the importance of his wife Josephine’s reminder that “if you understand the stories, you’ll understand the man.”

When I saw “Big Fish” on Broadway, I can honestly tell you it was a big flop. Lippa’s flavorful songs were a saving grace (gorgeous ballad “I Don’t Need a Roof” is among the top tier of an underrated score), but an overblown design and lopsided conception (Norbert Leo Butz oddly and perplexingly portraying Edward from child to adult) chipped away at the material’s believability and resonance. Thankfully, Epiphany’s breezy staging, delightfully directed and choreographed by Megan Wean Sears, significantly alters the show’s pivotal generational scope by having three actors portray Edward and two actresses portray Sandra. Granted, Epiphany encourages large casts (this year’s company totals 75 and is double-cast per tradition), but in recognizing the possibilities afforded to multiple actors, Sears has truly changed the show for the better despite artistic liberties.
John Benjamin (an endearing, vocally strong everyman) and Brady Kress (a folksy charmer) bring authority and tenderness to the good-natured Edward with both interpretations culminating poignantly in Act 2’s deeply moving finale “How It Ends.” As the ever-supportive Sandra, Kandis Wean Gibson (recalling the depth and musicianship of role originator Kate Baldwin) and Kellie Daab (lovingly warm) are respectively and engagingly paired with Benjamin and Kress. In the middle of Act 1, when the action appealingly turns to Edward’s popular teenage years in his hometown of Ashton, Desmond Thomas (a chipper All-American) and Eric Thompson (a radiant pop tenor who will hopefully land a record deal one of these days) take the spotlight with terrific vibrancy. The teenage Sandra is wonderfully embodied by triple threats Brianna Russ (opposite Thomas) and Abby Kress (opposite Thompson). The bruised, frustrated Will arises with impactful introspection thanks to Jeffrey Mack (offering a soaring, lyric-driven rendition of “Stranger”) and Timmy Seiler (very contemplative and vulnerable). Kathy Meyer and Lily Cutler are sweetly sincere as Josephine.

Additionally noteworthy among a fine cast are Bobby Klosterman and John Morgan as Young Edward, Liam Utt and Curtis LeMieux as Young Will, Eric Pettit and Eryn Barrett as Will’s son, Brian Hoff and Mikey Fried as Karl the Giant, the flamboyance of Justin Matthews and Bobby Morgan as Amos Calloway, the fieriness of Margo Russ and Mia Bridgman as The Witch, Chris Scharf and Nick Kress as Don Price, Jessica Pettit and Kate Barrett as Jenny Hill, Bridget Miley and Laura Jacobs as teenage Jenny, the fancifulness of Sarah Crawford and Marisha Osowski as The Mermaid, Olivia Engler and Jessica Pettit as the USO Singer leading patriotic Act 2 opener “Red, White and True,” and Brianna Mallare and Maria Jasek as Sandra’s friends who join her for the cutesy “Little Lamb from Alabama.”

Along with the unified joy bursting throughout ensemble numbers “Be the Hero,” “Showdown” and “Out There on the Road,” Sears particularly creates a fierce routine for the Witches (dramatically clothed in black hooded capes by the consistently remarkable duo of Maria Klueber and Lori Watamaniuk for “I Know What You Want”) and a jubilant tap dance (“Red, White and True”). Still, prepare to be blown away by the breathtaking beauty of Act 1 finale “Daffodils,” teen Edward and Sandra’s heartfelt duet bolstered by the dazzling elegance of female dancers surrounding them while sprinkling the stage with daffodils. It is simply one of the most stunningly romantic sequences you’ll see on any stage this year.

In addition to Klueber and Watamaniuk, the first-rate production team includes music director David Brush, scenic designers Matt Carson and Tristan Cupp (providing an eye-catching proscenium featuring images of Edward’s various adventures and encounters), sound designer Chris Pentecost, lighting designer Ryan McCoy, prop designers Adrienne Ausdenmoore (Drama Ministry Chair) and Jason Hamen, assistant director/choreographer Sarah Egbert, and dance captain Abby Kress.

The proverbial love of storytelling and the desire to live one’s life bigger are vital attributes fueling this study of family, friendship and legacy. Edward Bloom may be a fantastical soul, but he’s relatable nonetheless. In fact, you may see one of your relatives or perhaps yourself within him. As Sandra reminds Will, “There is magic in the man, please find it while you can.” Kudos to Epiphany for bringing truly wondrous magic to a show that would still be running on Broadway if it had incorporated Sears’ inspired vision.

big-fish-musical-22-1

“Big Fish” continues through July 24 at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6430 Far Hills Ave., Centerville. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Act One: 70 minutes; Act Two: 55 minutes. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors (60 and over), and $5 for children (5 and under). For tickets call, call (937) 433-1449 ext. 105. For additional information, visit www.epiphanydayton.org or e-mail [email protected]. In addition, every summer a charitable organization is selected to receive a portion of the proceeds. This year’s beneficiary is the Storybook Project, a ministry centered on ensuring incarcerated parents have the opportunity to read to their children. Volunteers from Epiphany record these parents reading a children’s book of their choosing and a personal message to the child. Epiphany volunteers have been visiting prisoners since 2001 and have sent over 10,000 recordings and books.

The Most Important Move You’re Not Doing: The Hinge

July 20, 2016 By Jason Harrison

People who’ve never worked out before often assume that the sole reason for stepping foot into a gym is to “lose weight” or change body composition. While those might be benefits for some (assuming they’re also getting enough sleep and eating well) I would argue that the first priority for most people who are new to fitness is to learn how to move.

Good movement is the foundation for increasing workload because you’ll be able to work harder and longer over time by avoiding injury. Sure, you can walk into the gym today and make yourself sweat, but if you’re not also learning how to move you’re not only building in a natural ceiling for your strength and fitness, you’re also increasing the likelihood of injury over time. Lifting weights is actually an extraordinarily safe activity in terms of acute injury (like rolling an ankle) but it can lead to chronic injuries (like that shoulder or hip pain that never seems to go away).

My guess is the most important movement pattern you’re not doing right now is the hinge. Remember when your parents first started letting you help them move heavyish things around the house and they admonished you to “lift with your legs, not your back”? Without quite knowing it, they were telling you to hinge instead of just bending over. But what is a hinge?

A hinge is a movement whereby you flex and extend at the hips. A classic hinge movement pattern is exhibited by a barbell deadlift. If you watch the animation below, you can see which muscles are responsible for hip extension (gluteus maximus and hamstrings). In everyday terms, that’s your butt and the muscles on the back of your legs.

A review of the anatomy suggests that your back does play a role in something like a deadlift even if the primary movers are your butt and legs, but I think it’s especially interesting to note just how important butt strength is on a movement like a deadlift. If you’re trying to get stronger and you still fit into skinny jeans–male or female–then you’re doing something wrong. (I’m only sort of kidding here. Big, strong butts are also functional butts. Go make yourself one.)

Until recently, I used to advise people that if they’re new to lifting then they ought to focus on squatting, horizontal pushing (like a bench press), horizontal pulling (like a dumbbell row), vertical pushing (like an overhead press), and vertical pulling (like a lat pulldown or pullup). But I’ve been thinking that this advice isn’t complete and that perhaps beginners ought to start their journey with hip hinging. Along with the squat, the hip hinge is the movement pattern you’re most likely to use in your everyday life. Therefore it’s important that you both get it right and learn to make it strong.

One of the best collections of video tutorials on learning the hip hinge movement pattern comes to us by way of Tony Gentilcore in a blog post appropriately titled “How to Hip Hinge Like a Boss.” You can view that here. Below I’ve embedded just one example of the many drills he’s put together to help you learn how to hinge correctly.

I’ve been stealing the above drill for a while now. Basically you’re using the wall to learn how to throw your butt back and engage the powerful muscles in your posterior chain. Notice how little knee flexion and extension is actually involved here. This makes the hip hinge much different than a squat. Check out the difference in this brief video below.

So why not just go into the gym and try to burn calories? Why “waste” the time learning the difference between a squat and a hinge? If two people walk into my gym, I know ultimately the more patient person who’s willing to learn the movement patterns will be happier with their body a year from now than the impatient person who just wants to sweat a lot. Why? Because once the patient person learns how to hinge well I can progress them through advanced movements like barbell deadlifts and kettlebell swings. These advanced movements, loaded progressively, will build more muscle and ultimately lead to more of a caloric expenditure than basic movements. Powerful movements like the hip hinge involve more muscle mass and thus provide the stimulus your body needs to change.

Before hiring a personal trainer or joining a gym, reorient your mindset toward movement and away from burning calories. You have to inhabit this body the rest of your life, so you might as well learn how to move it well. Once you do that you’ll also be able to push it harder and make big leaps toward the aesthetic ideal for which you might be looking.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS & Lots of Fun News at THE NEON!

July 19, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

absolutely-fabulous-posterHello Everyone,

I’m sorry to say that TICKLED tanked this weekend…but interestingly, folks have loved it! (Some of our staffers have even said it’s one of their favorites we’ve shown this year.) If you still need to see it, Thursday will be your last chance to see it with us. We will hold MUSIC OF STRANGERS and DARK HORSE for one final week! On Thursday evening, we will open the highly anticipated comedy ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS – a film based on the beloved British sitcom. (On Friday, July 29, we’ll open Woody Allen’s latest – CAFE SOCIETY.)

Synopsis for ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: “Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamor, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hot-spots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more!” (Fox Searchlight) Join us on Sunday afternoon at 12:50 & 3:00 (we’ll open at 11:30am) for AN ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS BUBBLY BRUNCH! We’ll have bottles of bubbly for sale and you can grab a bite from Pa’s Pork Foodtruck! Amelia Robinson & Alexis Larsen will be your “Patsy & Edina” for the afternoon – giving lots of fun prizes! (Many thanks to Lisa Grigsby of Dayton Most Metro for putting us in touch with Pa’s Pork!) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

PUSH Dayton has rented our space to bring a one-time screening of TRAPPED to THE NEON on Thur, Aug. 4 at 7:30. “On June 27, 2016, the Supreme Court ruled in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, that restrictions on abortion clinics in Texas posed an undue burden on women seeking abortions. TRAPPED, a documentary by Dawn Porter, follows the struggles of the clinic workers and lawyers who are on the front lines of a battle to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women. US. reproductive health clinics are fighting to remain open. Since 2010, 288 TRAP (Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers) laws have been passed by conservative state legislatures. Unable to comply with these far-reaching and medically unnecessary measures, clinics have taken their fight to the courts. What do these restrictions mean for the women of the United States? Their doctors? What’s the collateral damage when legislation plays politics with women’s health? PUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health) is a Dayton-based advocacy group that raises funding and awareness for Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio.” Ticket details coming soon. Sponsored by Harmony Creek United Church of Christ, Drunk Think Tank, Blue Jacket Books, and Mark E. Owens, Dayton Clerk of Court.” Tickets are $5 each and are only available by clicking this LINK. If tickets remain, they will be available in our lobby one hour before the screening.

Local filmmaker Gino Pasi and his team are hosting a special screening of his new film on Thursday, August 11. “THE ARCHIVIST, a short-film written, produced, and directed by Pasi, tells the story of the brief and unusual relationship of Virginia Hirsch and Archie Vecchio, two people unable to forsake the past. The halcyon days of Virginia Hirsch’s youth are quickly fading no matter how hard she tries to hold on to them. For Archie Vechhio, history is much easier to navigate than the complicated present. When these two people meet, however, the past is buried and the present engaged. And both Virginia and Archie come to realize that living life to the fullest in the “here and now” means taking action – action that won’t come easy for either. Tickets available now at THE NEON’s box office for $5. One Time Only Public Showing! 9PM, Thursday, August 11, 2016.” (This film will screen earlier in the evening for invited guests.)

Our “NEON Lumbar Supporter” campaign is off to a pretty good start. Many thanks to those of you who have contributed to the cause! So far, we’ve “sold” 21 chairs toward our goal of 100. This project will cost us $50,000, and you can read all about it by clicking this LINK. Donations can be accepted on-line, but we can also take donations in person…we’d love to chat with you and have you try out the new sample chairs in our lobby.

Thanks so much for your continued support,
Jonathan

Dayton’s Story Slamm Returns To The Stage Bigger Than Ever

July 18, 2016 By Bryan Suddith

ssMore than 10 years ago Shelley Hulce began to gather fellow fans of The Moth podcast for Story Slams. Story Slams are similar to Poetry Slams but a bit more structured. The premise was simple. People sharing true stories, in person, unscripted and live. For more than a decade a small group of storytellers have been meeting in coffee shops, libraries and bars in and around Dayton.

In February I traveled to an official Moth event in Louisville to watch how the event is produced. I was pleasantly suprised to see that more than 300 people came out to a venue to listen to great stories.

First some background:
The Moth organization was founded in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green in New York City. Green wanted to recreate those sultry summer evenings in his native Georgia, when moths were attracted to the light on the porch where he and his friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales. He began to host events in his apartment, then in bars, and now in theatres across NYC and hosted around the world.

The Moth story slam rules are simple. True Story. Told in the first person. Without notes and told live. Each month the Moth hosts story slams and the events are centered on a theme. Storytellers come prepared with a story on theme and put their name in a hat.

I was chose to share a story in Louisville in February and was selected that nights Story Slam winner. I knew I had to create a similar event in Dayton.  This month the Dayton Story Slamm kicks off with Stories of Failure at Wiley’s Comedy Joint in the Oregon District. Storytellers should come prepared with a 5 minute story on the topic of Failure. 10 names will be chosen to share their stories and judges will score each story. The winner leaves with $50 cash and title, Dayton Story Slam Champion!

Judges will be looking for the following in each story:
Does the story have a beginning, middle and ending?
Was there a hook to the story, did it grab the audiences attention?
Was it near the time limit of 5 minutes.
Was the story related to the theme.

You don’t need to be a storyteller to attend or to enjoy the evening. If you are a fan of The Moth Radio Hour, Radio Lab podcast, Snap Judgement show or this American Life on NPR,  you will enjoy the pace and entertainment that only live storytelling provides.

Admission is $5.00 and the bar will be open. Stop in and tell a story or sit back and enjoy a few of Dayton’s best sharing theirs.

Details on the Story Slamm Dayton Facebook page.

Mystery Monday – July 18, 2016

July 18, 2016 By Tom Gilliam

Welcome to Week 25 of Mystery Mondays. The answer to Week 24’s Mystery Photo is: The MeadWestvaco Treehouse at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. I took this photo on July 4, 2016 during the Red, White & Boonshoft event.

DMM Mystery Monday-24

From boonshoftmuseum.org:

A remarkable permanent exhibit space, the MeadWestvaco Treehouse is just that: a fully-enclosed treehouse that extends beyond the traditional walls of the Museum to grant better access to the natural world. While inside, learn about environmental preservation, encounter live Honey Bees in their hive, see images of local flying squirrels captured on night-vision cameras, and of course do some bird watching!

Wow, over 50 of you got this one right!  Congratulations to our randomly drawn winner Emmalee Daniels of Vandalia
! Rapid Fired Pizza certificates are coming your way!

We challenge you to tell us where in the Dayton area this photo was taken by filling out the form below.  We’ll do a random drawing from all those with a correct answer and the winner will get 2 pizzas from Rapid Fired Pizza.

Enter here:

We’ll post the winner next Monday with details about the photo as well as a new photo to challenge your knowledge of the Dayton area.

A New Peoples Choice Voted In At Beer!

July 16, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

Beer AttendeesOver 500 beer lovers gathered today at The Yellow Cab Tavern for the annual annual beer tasting event that is a celebration of Dayton brewing culture. All of the Dayton area breweries submited one beer for tasting and attendees were able to try a 6oz pour from all 13 breweries. Then you get to vote for your three favorite in this unique “people’s choice” event.

Musical entertainment by Todd The Fox, and outdoor games like cornhole and giant jenga kept the crowd entertained and food trucks kept them fed, as they worked their way through the following beer list:

Star City Brewing Adena APA  American Pale Ale

Hairless Hare Brewery  Strawberry Kolsch

Crooked Handle  Roadside Peanut Butter Porter

Dayton Beer Co Upright Kolsch

Fifth St Brew Pub  Mango Cure All  Cream Ale

Beer Representatives

Carillon Brewing Co  Berliner Weisse

Lock 27  Wicked Hopsta  IPA

Warped Wing  Trotwood Lager

Eudora  Mother Fuggle  Brown Ale

Toxic Brew  Brunette  Belgian Brown

Nowhere in Particular  Beat You Wheat

Yellow Springs Grapefruit wobbly wheel

The camaraderie of the local brewers was obvious, as many of the owners and managers were on hand, sharing insights on their beers, the industry’s explosive growth and upcoming plans for August’s 7th beer week celebration.

“Considering that there were no breweries in the Dayton area just four years ago, it is great to see the number of breweries growing and that they all have so much support,” shared event organizer Brian Johnson.

In the first year of this evenBeert Fifth Street Brewpub was declared the people’s choice.  Last year Hairless Hare Brewery edged out the first champ by just 7 votes.  Tallying the votes this year  put Eudora in third, second place went to Yellow Springs Brewery and for 2016 the popular vote was in favor of  the Peanut Butter Porter from Springboro’s Crooked Handle. “With Crooked Handle being the newest brewery and taking home the people’s choice award just goes to prove that Dayton’s a region that supports all of our great breweries,” Johnson says.

Votes were counted after the event was over, so no trophy photo was available, but we’re sure you’ll be seeing this big stein behind the bar at Crooked Handle, when you visit them at 760 N. Main Street, in the same shopping center as Dorothy Lane Market, just off St Rt 741.

Crooked Handle is openf4bce9db52578a5ba0ef3e4ab0025a37

Tuesday – Thursday                   4 – 10PM

Friday – Saturday                      12 – 11PM

Dayton Natives Premiere Dark Fantasy/Horror Series

July 15, 2016 By Film Dayton

A&OOmari Matlock and Alexander McCoy-Smith are two independent filmmakers/Founders of Rebirth Films, an independent production company since 2004. While producing projects such as music videos, promo videos, instructional videos and commercials for numerous clients they have as always simultaneously worked on passion projects. Unaware of the commonly excepted order of making films, the duo’s first film would be a feature and go to be officially nominated for the Hollywood Black Film Festival.

From there Omari and Alex would continue blazing their own path. The filmmakers would create a web series called ‘Reel Independent,’ giving fans a true behind the scenes look at filmmaking on a micro budget.

Ready to produce another narrative, the duo would produce a short film titled ‘Descent of a Superstar’ for a mere $3000. The supernatural drama would also go on to be officially nominated for several film festivals. Now confident they can do anything they set their minds to, Omari and Alex are ready to move to the next level. Determined to push themselves, they’ve wrote, shot and produced five Short/Concept Films simultaneously. Each film another chapter in their Dark Fantasy/Horror series titled ‘Tales from the Blood Fairies’.

Tales from the Blood Fairies will premiere at the Neon this Saturday at 1:15 pm and you can purchase tickets online for $10

Tales from the Blood Fairies is a modern day anthology similar to classics such as Tales from the Crypt,Twilight Zone and Creepshow. It explores the dark and twisted subliminal underpinnings of beloved fairytales. The series challenges all of what you thought you knew about “Children’s tales.” Questions like what if sirens, better known as mermaids, truly did walk the surface? Or, what does it mean when Peter Pan takes your children away forever? So,-my question for you is, what if what we’ve been lead to believe about fairy tale’s is a lie?

Directly following the premiere will be a networking after party, located at Delish Cafe in Downtown Dayton. Attendees will experience fun, food, and the opportunity to meet talented people in the Dayton region. If you attend the movie premiere, please hang onto your ticket to get into the Networking Party for free, otherwise there will be a $5 entry fee. The movie premiere and the networking party are open to the public.

4 Pokemon Go Events You Should Know About!

July 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

The PokemonGo craze has landed hard in Dayton! The groundbreaking A game has surged to the No.1 free game and No.1 grossing game in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in record-breaking time, qualifying Pokémon Go as a certifiable global phenomenon13680320_10153598765506176_337626139874663088_o.

We’ve seen plenty of folks walking around downtown, in parks and shopping centers with phone in hand, a look of concentration on their face and then a yelp of glee, fist pumping in celebration of a capture!

For those that want to know more, you can join the Better Business Bureau today from 11am – 1pm as they host a Lure Party on Fourth Street.

13698000_1087264898007488_5132081185263765839_oOr stop by Cake, Hope and Love for the best cupcakes and a guarantee of pokemon.  Shop owner Shannon Teague got inspired and as she says, “I spent last weekend watching every video, reading as many articles as I could find about Pokemon.  And I  realized I could use lures to attract the pokemon hunters and offer incentives to them as well.  I’ve met so many new people through this promotion and we’re having fun with it!”

Chili’s in Beavercreek learned that the game has made their restaurant a hot spot for captures.  While we didn’t really have anything to do with it it seems to be drawing people to our location.  Manager Macy comments, “I see all kinds of people walking around the restaurant with their phones, in and out of the bathrooms and around just searching.  Our business has been up the last week or so, and I’m not sure if it’s do to the Pokemon Go hunters, but we’re happy to have them.”13717283_990207904425161_1884238073850659101_o

Proto Build Bar is welcoming the POKEMONGO community tonight with  two pokestops  at their  location  tonight.  They’ll also pulling out their retro consoles and arcade machines. They are also raffling off two tickets to Daytons Mini Maker Fair this Saturday.

And the Oregon District is planning a Poke Pub Crawl July 30th at 9pm all over the District  What better way to bring more people together than Pokemon and beer! Start at one end of The Oregon and finish at the other end.  Who knows how many pocket monsters you’ll find that night!

One things for sure, Dayton is into Pokemon GO, but a word of caution- you will use data, so if you don’t have an unlimited data plan for your phone, be careful.
