Five For Drinking – The Negroni

June 9, 2017 By Brian Petro

Classic Negroni

The classic Negroni.

For many a bartender, there is a certain allure to the Negroni. It could be the of the simplicity of the recipe: one part gin, one part sweet vermouth, and one part the bitter Italian liqueur Campari. These basic proportions make the cocktail ripe for experimentation. Which means that the gin can be replaced with bourbon or champagne. The Campari can be replaced with any wide variety of bitters, from Aperol to Zucca. Every time you change one of the ingredients, you change the overall flavor profile. While the Negroni will always stand on its own among the classic cocktails, the variations it has inspired have covered the flavor and color spectrum.

The best legend of the creation of the Negroni starts with an Italian nobleman fleeing to America after having a child out of wedlock. Count Camillo Negroni spent some time in the American West, becoming a cowboy and enjoying the lifestyle of a rancher. When everything was a little calmer, he returned to his native country to settle back into his old lifestyle. He sauntered into town one day, looking for a stiff drink. Thinking the popular Americano (1 oz. sweet vermouth and 1 oz. Campari, topped with soda water) was not going to satisfy his thirst, he asked the bartender to substitute the soda water for gin. It was at that point a legend in the cocktail world was born. And like many other cocktails of the era it was mostly lost after Prohibition, showing up once bartenders started to discover the old recipes.

The one ingredient that takes some getting used to.

Several years ago, Imbibe Magazine declared the first full week of June Negroni Week. It is a celebration of this vintage cocktail all over the country, as well as an opportunity for bars and bartenders to give back to their community. For every Negroni purchased at participating venues, a portion of the proceeds is donated to the charity of their choice. You can see the participating venues every year by searching by city or zip code on the Negroni Week website. This year in Dayton, there is one venue celebrating the week: Doctor Doodles is also offering the classic version to help Muttville. If you are planning to spend some time there this weekend, make sure you order one to help either of these amazing pet charities.

What is a classic Negroni, you may ask?

Negroni

1 oz. gin
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Campari

Glass: Cocktail or Rocks
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

If you are a fan of gin and all of its herbal glory, this is an amazing cocktail. The bitter Campari is an acquired taste, but it is blunted by the gin and the sweet vermouth. Start here, and work your way forward…

Not a fan of gin? Bourbon fits just as nicely in this cocktail.

Old Pal

1 oz. bourbon
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Campari

Glass: Cocktail
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

For those of you that enjoy whiskey more than gin, here is the Negroni variation for you. Swap the herbal gin for the smooth bourbon, and it is like you have an entirely different cocktail. If rye is not your thing, exchange that for bourbon and make yourself a Boulevardier. Either one is fantastic.

Negroni Sbagliato

1.5 oz. sparkling wine (stay in Italy and hit the Prosecco)
1.5 oz. sweet vermouth
1.5 oz. Campari

Negroni Sbagliato

Bubbles make everything better, right?

Glass: Champagne flute
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour the Campari and sweet vermouth into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until chilled, then strain into the champagne flute. Then top off with the champagne and GENTLY stir. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail and drop in.

It is said that while making a Negroni, a hapless bartender accidentally grabbed an open bottle of champagne instead of the gin and poured it in. Instead of dumping it, he served it to his customer and this star was born. I want to see the bar set up that has the gin ANYWHERE close to the champagne. It seems like a stretch. However, the word sbagliato in Italian means “bungled” or “mistaken”, so there could be an

Unusual Negroni (by Charlotte Voisey)

1 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
1 oz. Lillet Blanc
1 oz. Aperol

Glass: Cocktail
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel or Grapefruit peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange (or grapefruit) peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

If the boldness of the original Negroni is too much for you, Ms Voisey developed a cocktail that dials back all of the intensity. Henrick’s is an amazingly light gin, more cucumber and rose petal than juniper. The Lillet is not very vermouthy, and the Aperol, while bitter and orange, is not as intense as the Campari.

Dark and Smooth Cocktail

A little sweeter, but still with some herbal zing.

Dark and Smooth

1 oz. dark rum
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Jägermeister

Glass: Rocks
Ice: None
Garnish: Orange peel

Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir until the mixture is chilled, then strain into the cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail, then drop it in and serve.

I will never stop experimenting with one of my favorite spirits, Jägermeister. I have been fiddling with this concept for a while, and finally figured out that the dark rum is the answer. The cocktail leans to the sweeter side for a Negroni, but the herbal notes hit the nose and the palate at the end.

There are many, many more variations of the Negroni out there. If you want to really see the variety of what people have done with the basics of the cocktail, buy the book Negroni: Drinking to La Dolce Vita, with Recipes and Lore by Gary Regan. It has dozens of recipes, some that stay true to the original, some that stray so far off that it is hard to call them a Negroni. But all of them stay true to the idea of the slightly bitter, herbal original.

Find your favorite cocktailing venue and order a classic. They are a delight on the palate, even though for some it is an acquired taste. And if the original is not to your liking, you can see there are many ways to modify it into something you will enjoy. Count Negroni did it over a century ago, and look how well that has turned out. Cheers!

A Decade of Dumaine Ends July 2nd

June 9, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

I knew it was coming, yet hearing the words out of Chef Anne Kearney’s mouth, “we’re closing down,” just hurt.

On so many levels Rue DuMaine  changed the course of dining in Dayton.  When Anne, a James Beard Winning Chef, and her husband Tom opened Rue Dumaine in 2007,  they set the standards high with Americanized version of classic French flavors. Duck rillette crepes, crispy Herb de Provence frog legs, Cabernet braised short ribs, classic cocktails and a standard of service that was casual and welcoming, with a keen eye for detail.  Each plate that came out of the kitchen at Rue lived up to Anne’s motto “Food of Love”

Tom served on the Miami Restaurant Association Board when I was President and we worked to bring more attention to our local food scene.  I can remember pitching story ideas to Mark Fisher at the Dayton Daily News and being told, “we’ve already done a food story this month.”  But Rue DuMaine helped changed that.  Anne’s insistence on working with local farmers, showcasing them in her regular newsletters, her collaborations with other area female chefs, they all turned Dayton’s food scene into something worth writing about.

I talked with Chef Anne last night, as she was composing her farewell letter and you could hear the pain and pride in her voice.  It’s been a rough road for her, fighting brain aneurysms, cancer, family illnesses, but the final nail in the coffin in this chapter of the Dumaine story was the sale of the shopping center to out of state investors and a sudden 80% increase in real estate taxes on the business that just became insurmountable.

Yet with strength and charm, she penned this love letter to her customers:

Thank you! Thank you to any and all for your support of our efforts since November 2007. Tom and I returned from NOLA with a great deal of ambition, “We will make great things happen in Dayton, How hard can that be?” Sadly, due to circumstances beyond our control Bar Dumaine, Rue Dumaine and Anne Kearney will serve our last meals at 1061 Miamisburg-Centerville Road on Sunday, July 2nd, 2017

Until that day we will open at 11 am, seven days a week. The details of our demise are known to many but ultimately we have run the course of our lease and were unable to come to a mutually agreed upon resolution in order for us to stay at this location.

During the past 10 years, I have grown to love my hometown of Dayton with greater appreciation. The quality of people that have become part of the RD/BD krewe has been pleasing for this childless woman. Watching the younger ones literally grow up before my very eyes. Many have completed their collegiate journey, met their true mates and even started families of their own. Others have gone on to make great things happen in the culinary world. I have so enjoyed watching their crafts defined and refined.

The farming community that has collaborated with me to bring quality, locally grown products to the table has been a rewarding experience, I am blessed for their efforts, I will miss those relationships. Our guests, you will not be forgotten, some of you I truly consider family. I have come to know many of you beyond a name and a face. You have shared your accomplishments, as well as your disappointments. I have enjoyed watching your love ignite, families develop, and children grow as well as offered comfort to you in times of despair.

Yes, my heart is broken. I will somehow find a way to mend and I hope in my efforts, I will be able to create a space for you to join me again for a great dining experience. I will keep all of you posted on when and where this journey takes me next and ultimately how I intend to get myself back to Dayton so I am able to feed you once again.  I will likely take a respite from the owner/operator world to delve, discover and develop new culinary related skills.

Despite my efforts and the efforts of many to find the right place to relocate, we have come up empty handed. This leaves me with 34 employees and a restaurant full of quality equipment and amenities to find new homes for (including that beautiful bar and wine cellar). If you or anyone you know are interested in anything you see or use during your dining experience at BD, please reach out to me. It all needs a new home. [email protected]

Many of the Bar DUMAINE krewe have already gotten jobs, taken interviews or received offers and taken jobs. However, if you are industry linked with direction and/or in need of a great employee, please reach out.

Now I ask of you, one thing. Help me to say goodbye to this fine establishment by showing us your support as we “ride the wave to the shore.”

As per our usual, standard operating procedure, I, Anne Kearney will not compromise the quality of ingredients and dining services as the days begin to quickly fade away. I do appreciate your good wishes and curiosities about my next step. I will find my way into a professional position that will satisfy me while I rebuild and recharge. I will not lose you, those of you that have made a strong connection with me, or my food. I will continue to reach out with information about great things going on in the food world via my newsletters.

Let me know if you would like to be added to my newsletter list, 937.610.1061

Thank you so very much for reading my story, Anne Kearney

And while this is the end of this chapter in Chef Anne’s life, we have no doubt that after a summer spent wrapping up this business, some time off to rest, and rediscover herself, the future is still bright for this talented, charming and caring women, who gives so much of herself to others.

Let’s send her off with a rousing last month of business at Bar Dumaine and thank her for 10 years of fantastic food. Upcoming events at the Washington Township eatery include:

Tuesday 6-13: BD cellar favorites– Anne’s pulling several bottles from Bar DUMAINE wine cellar, “hidden treasures” she’s found during the last inventory. This is going to be fun. I will see what we can come up with for tasty treats to dine on as we move through as many wines as you are interested in.

Thursday 6-15 from 6-9pm :Matt Schlop

He will be strumming his guitar and singing along to his favorite 60s & 70s

Sunday 6-18: Father’s Day Bruch

Monday 6-19: YELLOW SPRINGS BREWERY DINNER 6 pm, call now for reservations, seating is limited to 34 guests. The complete menu is below.

Tuesday 6-20: BEER Tasting TBA

Monday 6-26: Wine Dinner in the spirit of the ol’ RUE DUMAINE~
French flavors and wines all around. Michael Freeman stopped in yesterday with a fantastic line-up for this special event, ONE LAST TIME.  The 6 wines for this event are set into place. The menu is in the works, I am so excited about this, AWESOME! Limited seating 30 guests. Menu by June 11th.

Sunday, July 2nd: 12noon – 8pm
Join us for an OPEN HOUSE, good music, food, and libations will be flowing all day long.

‘First Kisses’ Review –Young at Heart Players – Through the Years

June 7, 2017 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Jay D. Hanagan’s wonderfully endearing two-hander “First Kisses,” a humorous and touching love story spanning 60 years and a memorable finalist in the 2003 Dayton Playhouse FutureFest, receives a terrific staging courtesy of the senior-themed theater troupe Young at Heart Players at the Dayton Playhouse.

J. Gary Thompson and Annie Pesch portray lifelong friends John and Mary in the Young at Heart Players production of Jay D. Hanagan’s tender dramedy “First Kisses” (Contributed photo by Fran Pesch)

Annie Pesch and J. Gary Thompson are delightfully cast as Mary and John, childhood friends who blossom into spouses while sharing the intimacy of a shack in the woods where they converse and reflect. Portraying a range of ages from 11 to 72 would appear to be a challenging or daunting task, but not for this talented and compatible duo. In fact, Pesch’s ability to vibrantly tap into her inner child with exuberant precociousness and playful spunk certainly aids in setting the correct tone in the opening minutes. Still, both actors bring impressive nuance and versatility to the proceedings, deftly directed by Young at Heart founder Fran Pesch. Thompson is particularly great in a scene which finds the emotionally reserved John finally expressing his love for Mary while hilariously tipsy. Annie, who memorably originated the role of Mary in the FutureFest staged reading also directed by Fran, notably ages gracefully throughout. She finds multiple opportunities to convey meaningful depth whether interpreting Mary’s uncertainties as a spouse or quietly absorbing a life well lived in her golden years. More importantly, Pesch and Thompson are equally captivating in the show’s finest and most dramatic scene involving Mary and John discussing the shakiness in their marriage centered on John’s desire to catch up with his ex-fiancé.
“First Kisses,” nicely accented by Fran Pesch’s set design, Sandy Lemming and Pesch’s costumes, and John A. Falkenbach’s lighting design, is a simple yet charming look at the power of love and the dedicated commitment it takes to make a relationship work and endure. By and large, Mary and John heartwarmingly prove first kisses can last a lifetime.

“First Kisses” continues through Sunday, June 11 at the Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 40 minutes; Act Two: 50 minutes. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Reservations can be made by calling Fran Pesch at (937) 654-0400. For additional information, visit www.youngatheartplayers.com. Patrons are advised the production contains some adult language.

Flip Your City, Flip Your Life

June 7, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Live here, work here, play here.

And Invest here?

That’s the goal of Real Estate U

Headquartered in Beavercreek, Real Estate U is a nationally recognized Real Estate training company. The owners, Bonnie and John Cochran, lifelong residents of the area, are taking the knowledge from their online products and getting hands on with local Real Estate investors…and those who want to be.

rei class

John Cochran gives tips and systems to new Real Estate Investors

The Miami Valley is one of the most affordable areas in the country for Real Estate and that’s a blessing and a curse. Yes, it’s affordable to live here, but it also makes us a target. We’ve all seen the ads for “house flipping classes” where you visit a ballroom in a hotel, hear the spiel and run to the back of the room for a chance to buy a few spots in a class. It may start out as $97, but it quickly turns into thousands. And who does that go to? A salesman who flies in for the day, and is gone once your payment is in hand.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. The folks over at REU live by the “talk about it, be about it” mantra. They are taking what they have learned in a few decades in the business and sharing it with the community for free. FOR FREE. Tried and true lessons learned in THIS MARKET, Dayton and surrounding areas, with partners equally as familiar with the Gem City.

Who is this for?

Veterans – were you a lifer? One and done? Either way, you have the attention to detail, honor and commitment to successfully use the tools given to you. REU has your second career all lined up.

Newbies -You want to buy the block,  you watch a lot of HGTV and it really seems like something you could do, right? Don’t run willy nilly into buying up properties – they’ll show you the ones worth looking for and how to find them.

Experienced investors – you’ve flipped a few houses, maybe won, maybe lost, but you know the process. Real Estate U will hand you best practices and proven systems to grow your business with no guesswork.

Contractors – you’re already doing the work why not keep it all in house?

SAHMs – you could pay a fee to sell a product for a commission (we all love leggings and want to lose weight) OR you can take the same amount of time (about 10 hours a week) and create serious generational wealth without having to recruit.

The entrepreneurial spirit, the “I can’t even deal with the college profs”, the young and hungry and live-by-my-own-rules crew – you make your own schedule and dictate your own income. Time freedom which leads to financial freedom is right at your fingertips.

Riff Raff Tavern To Close Down

June 6, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Owner Mike Schmidt, spent five years remodeling  the building, and wrestling with city  codes, but finally opened his Patterson Street Tavern in August of 2013.   Mike credits his wife Bev for keeping him going when the rules and regulations of the zoning and the costs incurred to do things right became overwhelming.  We were thrilled to write  the story of their opening and sadly, we now share their ending. After three and half years of struggle, he announced tonight on his Facebook page that Sunday will be Riff Raff Tavern‘s last night.

You can just feel the emotion in his post:

“12 years ago before his death my Dad asked Me what i wanted to do. I dont know Dad, would like to open a Blues Bar, But man if it dont work, time, effort, money…. I just dont know…. Dad : your right you just dont know, and will never know if you dont. You afraid of failing ? You afarid of what the others might think ? The others who will say I knew it ? The way I see it If you dont then you will always wonder. If it fails then hey You took a chance and you will feel alright requardless of others. Thats what seperates Dreamers and workers from the others. and guess what , You can pick up the pieces and move on. And in the end you did more then 90% of humans who wish they would of. …..Dad, I just wanted a music venue were people could become Friends and relax in a home atmosphere…with no fear of trouble…… He is no longer here physicialy, his words just keep echoing in my head…….

What I am saying is that after a long battle with Everyone from Urban Development, zoning, Mayor, meter maid and everyone else in this city These elected officials, government workers who recieve pay checks from small buisness taxes will and will not do anything about the parking problem In front of the venues on Mick Montgromery way. With That said Riff Raff will close its Doors Sunday with Dallas Moore unplugged.”

He goes on to say that the lack of support and parking challenges were all factors in his decision to shut down. You can read the entire post here.  But before they shut out the lights, they’d like to invite everyone to join them for their final weekend  this Friday with  Toni & Larry, Saturday SouthBound, and Sunday Outlaw Night with Dallas Moore.

Our heart goes out to Mike and his crew, being a small business owner is not easy and we’re glad he had a chance to pursue his dream.  Best wishes to you all on your next chapter.

‘Family Ties’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Seems Like Old Times

June 6, 2017 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Let’s talk TV. In case you hadn’t heard, reboots are the latest nostalgic trend taking pop culture by storm. In fact, a resurrected “Twin Peaks” is currently spooking Showtime, the Disney Channel repackages “That’s So Raven” as “Raven’s Home” next month, deliciously glamourous “Dynasty” will be rebranded for a new generation this fall on the CW, and plans are ongoing for Emmy Award-winning “Roseanne” to return next year to ABC or Netflix. At a time when investing in the untested comes with sizable risk, it is apparent producers are more willing to embrace tried and true projects, particularly derived from titles engrained in the psyche for decades.

The cast of Family Ties. Photo courtesy of Scott Kimmins.

One of those ready-made titles hoping to make big theatrical waves in the future is “Family Ties,” the popular sitcom (1982-1989) concerning the lovable and intellectual Keaton family from Columbus, Ohio. Starring Michael J. Fox, who won three Emmys for his portrayal of Alex P. Keaton, the show, created by Gary David Goldberg, brought relatable wholesomeness and humor to the table with entertaining political and cultural bite. Whenever he wasn’t perturbing his sisters Mallory and Jennifer, conservative Alex enjoyed a battle of wills with his ex-hippie, liberal parents Steven and Elyse. But at the end of the day, their bond always remained heartwarmingly intact.
“Family Ties” is the most recent TV property (now in the hands of CBS) being translated to the stage following a laundry list of classics such as “Cheers,” “Happy Days” and “I Love Lucy” among others. It has received a world premiere courtesy of the Human Race Theatre Company at the Loft Theatre produced by special arrangement with Araca Media & Entertainment. Written by Daniel Goldstein, who helmed an exhilarating and underrated 2011 Broadway revival of “Godspell,” the one-act play borrows certain episodes from the series (most notably “The Real Thing” in which Alex meets his future girlfriend Ellen Reed) as the foundation to tell a fresh story of reunion, forgiveness and heartbreak. Set 20 years later at the Keaton residence circa 2008 (minus little brother Andy Keaton serving overseas in the Peace Corps), the tale centers on Alex’s homecoming detailing exciting news of a run for Congress as well as the announcement he’ll soon be a father. However, laughter and reminiscing ultimately gives way to tragedy, a pivotal component Goldstein doesn’t have a tight grip on. Alex’s arrival contains a great deal of odd insensitivity which seems illogical considering the play’s trajectory toward bereavement. In turn, a series of flashbacks doesn’t necessarily help set the proper groundwork for the play’s plot twist, leaving portions of the dizzying action confusing and perplexing. In many respects, Goldstein wants “Family Ties” to feel emotionally akin to “Next to Normal,” another tale of close-knit family dynamics and underlying sorrow, but it’s a precarious notion. After all, no one wants to feel cheated by conceptual trickery so a better grasp of how this show navigates its time traveling structure is imperative.

Nevertheless, director Kevin Moore, fluidly helming with an excellent awareness of sitcom sensibilities, assembles an enjoyably cohesive sextet paying fine homage to the essence of their familiar characters. Immensely charming Jim Stanek (who gave a definitive rendition of “Love, I Hear” as Hero in the 1996 Tony Award-nominated revival of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”) is a thoroughly engaging focal point as Alex, particularly embodying Fox’s quirky persona with energetic glee (notice the way he bounces atop the kitchen counter in true Fox fashion). As Elyse, sitcom icon Eve Plumb, the unforgettable Jan Brady of “The Brady Bunch,” skillfully interprets the speech patterns and tenderly authoritative spirit of Meredith Baxter-Birney while offering a solidly endearing portrayal all her own. One of Plumb’s finest dramatic moments occurs opposite Stanek in flashback when Elyse and Alex debate Alex’s decision to celebrate his 18th birthday with his buddies in West Virginia, a firm reminder of the importance of checks and balances between parents and children. Lawrence Redmond lovingly conveys sincerity and gentleness as Steven and is especially strong in a scene detailing how Steven’s views of fatherhood were affected by his emotionally detached dad. Thea Brooks (whiny Mallory) and Sara Mackie (lively Jennifer) establish an appealing sisterhood. Maggie Lou Rader, mesmerizing in three flashbacks opposite Stanek at his most charismatic, truly delights as Ellen, Alex’s eventual wife.
In addition, set designer Tamara L. Honesty impeccably recreates the Keaton home from the stained glass front door to the linoleum kitchen floor. Janet G. Powell’s contemporary and period attire admirably accent the play’s tone despite the script unfortunately not allowing many costume changes. John Rensel’s lighting design and Jay Brunner’s sound design are expertly rendered, particularly Brunner marvelously turning back the hands of time with radio-inspired finesse. The production also effectively incorporates “Without Us,” the beautifully melodic “Family Ties” theme song, and Billy Vera and The Beaters’ romantic ballad “At This Moment.”

Personally, I’d be head over heels if someone decided to dramatize “Little House on the Prairie,” “Felicity,” “Sex and the City” or “Downton Abbey” to name only a few. So, if you’re a longtime fan of “Family Ties,” I totally understand why you would want to take advantage of catching up with characters who feel like old friends. Just be aware the play is in need of a hiatus in order to determine a clearer, more focused path on the road to substantively fulfilling resonance.

“Family Ties” continues through June 25 at the Loft Theatre of the Metropolitan Arts Center, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. The production is performed in 80 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $12-$40. There are discounts for select side-area seats available for $12 and $25 for all performances. For group sales, contact Betty Gould at (937) 461-8295 or e-mail [email protected]. For tickets or more information, call (937) 228-3630 or visit www.humanracetheatre.org or ticketcenterstage.com. In addition, there will be a post-show talk-back following the Sunday, June 11 performance.

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie At The Rose

June 5, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Longtime members of Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie have joined together to record their first-ever album as a duo. Simply titled LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM/CHRISTINE McVIE, the 10-song album will be released by Atlantic Records this summer, followed by a run of special U.S. concerts including a stop at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH on Tuesday, August 8th. The first single “In My World” is available now on all digital and streaming services. The album will be available June 9 on CD, LP, and all digital and streaming services.

The collaboration began three years ago, when McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac for the group’s “On With The Show” tour.   The pair went in to record new material prior to rehearsals for the tour and their natural creative chemistry was reignited.  According to Buckingham, “We were exploring a creative process, and the identity of the project took on a life organically. The body of work felt like it was meant to be a duet album. We acknowledged that to each other on many occasions, and said to ourselves, ‘what took us so long?!!’”

Working their natural singer songwriter skills together came easily for the duo.  Said Christine McVie, “We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us.”

Sessions for the album took place at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, which is where Fleetwood Mac recorded several of their classic albums, including Tusk. Buckingham and McVie were joined in the studio by fellow bandmates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, who supplied much of the dynamic rhythmic engine.
