New Webster Street Bridge Will Open Thursday

October 30, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton’s new Webster Street Bridge will open on Thursday, Nov. 2. The community is invited to walk the bridge at 6 pm; a ribbon-cutting ceremony follows at 6:30 pm.
The $11 million bridge over the Mad River replaces a 99-year-old structure demolished in early 2016. The new bridge features five traffic lanes, wider sidewalks, observation decks, “sky beam” lighting and roadway improvements at either end.

The bridge is a key connector for downtown Dayton, Tech Town, the Water Street District, north Dayton, and SR 4. It will have an estimated daily vehicle count of 8,000.

Webster is the 10th of 11 bridges replaced by the City of Dayton since 2006. The final bridge in the City’s replacement program will be the Helena Street Bridge, to open by January 2018. Montgomery County and the Ohio Department of Transportation have also constructed new bridges in Dayton in recent years, with more planned.

Funding was provided by the federal Surface Transportation Program, the Ohio Department of Transportation Municipal Bridge Fund, the Ohio Public Works Commission (Ohio Issue 1), and the City of Dayton capital fund.

The bridge was designed by EMH&T, of Columbus, and built by Eagle Bridge Company, of Sidney.

Rosewood Gallery Call for Proposals

October 30, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The City of Kettering, Ohio and Rosewood Arts Centre invite artists working in any media to submit proposals for exhibition in Rosewood Gallery during the 2019 Exhibition Season (January – December). Proposals must be submitted via Call for Entry  by April 27, 2018.

Rosewood Gallery specializes in the exhibition of contemporary art by emerging local, regional and national artists. It is dedicated to the encouragement and creation of new works and to the promotion of the visual arts in the Dayton, Ohio area. Eight solo exhibitions are presented each year in Rosewood Gallery, with support from the City of Kettering Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts and the Ohio Arts Council.

A selection committee composed of three regional art professionals will make recommendations from submissions of work for exhibition. Notifications of the jurors’ decision will be emailed by the end of May 2018.

All media will be considered for exhibition, including video and installation pieces. Exhibition proposals must include the following:

1. A cover letter describing the proposed exhibition, any special installation requirements, potential public engagement programs, and available dates.

2. An artist’s statement, resume, and previous exhibition record.

3. Ten (10) images and corresponding titles, media, dimensions and dates. The committee will be presented with only 10 images for consideration. If the work you are submitting is for example only, please be specific in your explanation of what you propose to present in the gallery if selected.

The City of Kettering insures all works while on exhibition  and covers printing and distribution costs of an announcement mailer for each exhibition. A transportation and shipping honorarium of $100 is provided to artists selected for exhibition. Any cost reimbursement requirements over and above the $100 honorarium should be listed and explained in the proposal. Rosewood Gallery does not provide equipment for multimedia installations. The gallery walls are constructed of drywall over plywood and cannot be altered other than by use of standard hanging hardware. Various pedestals are available for exhibitions. Educational programs and artist talks are strongly encouraged and may merit additional funding, per negotiation. Current employees of the City of Kettering are not eligible for solo exhibitions. For inquiries, email Tracy Flagg Centers, Gallery Coordinator.

All Good Things Must Come To An End…

October 27, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

I can remember when I had my first Zombie Dogz experience.  It was the horror themed truck’s very first outing in the Lowe’s parking lot on Wilmington Pike in 2012 and the idea of a hot dog topped with decadent things like macaroni and cheese, taco meat and fritos  just seemed so decadent.  In talking with Lee VanArtsdalen, who is the co-ower with her husband Dave, we reminisced about that first outing, where they served 68 people, she even remember my order!  Dave’s love of all things Zombie brought them to their second gig for the truck,  serving up their street eats at  the annual HorrorHound Weekend, where they were bombarded with  30,000 people to feed.

Zombie Dogz Food Truck

And from their the legend just grew.  Often the most popular truck at a rally, fans would line up and wait times often hit an hour for the growing list of gourmet hot dogs with an ever changing menu of ingredients.  Their popularity continued to grow and in 2016 they were named “Best Food Truck in Ohio” by Ohio Magazines in the annual readers poll. That same year they finished 2nd as 2016 Hot Dog Vendor of the Year poll in the national contest rum by Mobile Cuisine.

In the winter  of 2016 rumors started swirling about a brick and mortar location of Zombie Dogz and MostMetro was able to confirm the rumors in June and on Sunday, NOVEMBER 13, 2016 the doors opened at 1200 Brown Street.

Business a the shop has stayed steady, menu items have been added (yeah tots and White Truffle Mac n Cheese) and the truck continued to be out and about around town.  The menu continues to rotate with some of the more popular dogs being brought back for limited runs, while new dogs are introduced.  In June of this year they even introduced flights of coney sized versions of the gourmet dogs, so you can enjoy multiple creations.

But Today Zombie Dogz posted this on their Facebook page:

What’s up everybody. So, we are winding down our FOOD TRUCK season and wanted to fill you in a little bit. What we’re about to fill you in on is kind of sad. You may have noticed that we don’t make as many FOOD TRUCK posts lately. Well, there’s a reason………. I think after running long and strong for 5 years our little baby has come to an end. We don’t make posts anymore because we aren’t sure if half the time our trucks gonna make it!!! It’s pulled 12,000 lbs and has several tens of thousands of miles under her belt, and unfortunately she’s coming to an end. She’ll hold up for the rest of this months scheduled events, but after this month, we’re putting her to rest?????. So, with this being said, I’d like to list the rest of our events left for this season.

THE MENU WILL BE EPIC FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON AND WE WILL BE RUNNING SOME OF OUR CLASSICS AND MOST POPULAR DOGS. I’m putting it like this because the post will be so long with our schedule, but if you’re curious, you’re always welcome to contact us through messenger with questions about the menu??

TODAY, October 27th, from 9:30am-4pm we will be at the 13th annual CFC Pumpkin Chuck WPAFB.

5901 Airway Rd.
Riverside, Oh 45431

SATURDAY, October 28th, we’re doing a double??

From 11am-1pm we will be at the KETTERING REC. CENTER AND COMPLEX SOCCER FIELDS for this years WAG-O-WEEN event. Come help support Sicsa and the Humane Society celebrate Halloween with fun family activities and fun times with lots of cute puppies??

From 6pm-9pm we will be at JUNGLE JIMS for their Masquerade Ball in their new multi media facility along with 3 Floyds Zombie Dust Beer.

4450 Eastgate Dr.
Cincinnati, Ohio 45245

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30th from 6pm-10pm is going to be a super amazing event and one of my favorites to visit. We are going to be a part of the Dayton’s Grafton Hill Historic Association that is bringing back the annual STODDARD AVE PUMPKIN GLOW????

And Lastly TUESDAY 10/31 the last event of our whole food truck existence, we are glad to be ending it with such a cool event, and an amazing supporter of ours over the years. We will be at ENGINE HOUSE TATTOO celebrating their 5 year Anniversary from 5pm-8pm????

21 E. CENTER ST. Germantown, Oh 45327

Thank you all for your support over the years!!!! Our truck has brought us so many great memories and a LOT of customers who we now consider good friends, if not family. It has got us to where we are today and we’ll never forget how we got this far…..?
We hope that you will join us for some of our last events with our truck and help us say good bye and put her to rest properly??

Again, we are very, very appreciative for all the love and support over the years.

Thank you?

Stay Gold Dayton ????✌?

In talking with Lee she shared “this is so bittersweet.  The truck was a dream, we grew and nurtured and Dayton welcomed us.  But after 5 years the wear and tear on the truck and the trailer are dealing showing.  The generator is dying and the repairs to the trailer were becoming to much.  But we have the bricks and mortar location and we can really just concentrate on that now.”  But as we chatted about the changes over the years, and the birth of her 2 children and all the friend they’ve made in the community, and how the storefront has been a game changer for their business. She also let slip, that perhaps, in time, the truck could come back to life…just what we might expect from a Zombie!

Starbucks fans got a new option today- the Zombie Frappuccino.  The green base is flavored with tart apple and caramel with a red mocha drizzle and topped with “brains” made from pink whipped cream.

While we’ve seen mixed reviews online, one thing is sure- Starbucks was thinking Instagram when they designed this one.  We’ve already seen hundreds of photos and it’s only been available for about 12 hours.  It’s available for a limited time only: today, October 26, through Halloween, while supplies last.

“We thought about what you’d serve at a Halloween party, and we settled on dipped caramel apples,” said Jennica Robinson of the Starbucks beverage development team in a release. “It has a tart green apple flavor balanced with a smooth, sweet caramel.”

Starbucks has been offering  Halloween-themed beverages for that last few years, offering a Franken Frappuccino in 2014, and a Dracula-themed Frappula Frappuccino in 2015 and 2016.

DAI holds Bond Burning Ceremony

October 26, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

A brief ceremony and symbolic “bond burning” were held at The Dayton Art Institute today, Thursday, October 26, to announce the early payment of $11.7 million in bond debt held by the museum.

“This is an important step forward in our continuing efforts to ensure a sound financial future for The Dayton Art Institute, as the museum prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2019,” says Director and CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Since 2011, the museum staff, Board of Trustees, and Finance and Endowment Committees have been committed to reducing debt and being financially sound and responsible. In that time, The DAI has reduced its debt from $16.5 million to less than $600,000.”

A final payment of $11.7 million was applied to the 1996 museum renovation bond–originally totaling $14.4 million–which was paid off nine years ahead of schedule. This final payment was made possible thanks to the strategic financial leadership of The DAI’s staff, Board of Trustees, and Finance and Endowment Committees; gifts from benefactors Jim Dicke I and Jim Dicke II; unrestricted planned gifts; and a strong stock market. It is the second major prepayment on this bond in the past year, following a $1.2 million prepayment at the end of 2016. The bond originally helped fund museum renovations in the mid-1990s, which included the addition of the Entrance Rotunda and James F. Dicke Gallery of Contemporary Art.

In addition to paying off this debt, the museum has reduced the annual draw from its endowment to five percent or under for the last five years, and has created and implemented a centennial master plan for building enhancements, capital improvements, and gallery reinterpretation.

“For any organization, moments like this are a cause for celebration and a reaffirmation of new and exciting times ahead,” said Jim Dicke II, Emeritus Chair of The DAI’s Board of Trustees. “The support of Dayton, the Miami Valley and southern Ohio continues to make The DAI a special gem in the state. This is a landmark day.”

The Dayton Art Institute will celebrate its centennial as an organization in 2019. The museum’s historic building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was completed and opened in 1930. Today, the museum’s permanent collection contains more than 26,000 objects, spanning 5,000 years of art history. The museum galleries display about 1,000 works from the permanent collection at any time. In addition to exhibiting its permanent collection and outstanding special exhibitions, the museum is renowned for education programming that includes an array of offerings for diverse audiences.

PK33: LOVE & DEATH

October 25, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The objective of PechaKucha is to introduce the creative community to each other and Dayton’s PK Nights have done exactly that!

It all started for Dayton Pecha Kucha August of 2009 at c{space.  A crowd of 75 gathered to hear speakers do a 20×20, which means each talk is illustrated by 20 images that show for 20 seconds each, a total of six minutes and 40 seconds.

It was South Park resident Jill Davis that brought the concept to Dayton, entering into a verbal licensing to present these PK Nights 4 times a year.  In a 2013 interview with Meredith Moss Davis claimed, “despite my shyness, I harbored a fantasy of maintaining a salon, like Madame de Recamier, so I would be surrounded regularly by really interesting people,” she said.
Yet tonight, at the 33rd Dayton PK night Jill and her PK partner Matt Sauer will hand over the reigns to a new leadership team (Shayna, Katy + Ryan).  We owe them both a huge round of applause for creating such an amazing quarterly tradition that has become a must attend event for eight years.  They’ve carefully cultivated an amazing group of speakers, exposed us to some amazing venues and found sponsors to keep it free to the public and even included free beer!
THANK YOU JILL & MATT!
When asked to share her thoughts on this transition, Jill says, “I’ll always be glad I took the plunge and am happy PKDayton is always a surprise to me. It keeps re-assembling itself into a bit of a new experience each time–with each venue, each new mix of speakers and each new audience. On we go!”

So now it’s time to  celebrate this hallowed time of year with our 33rd set of intense but transient 20x20s. Thursday at 7:30pm at Top of the Market, 32 Webster Street.

Ancient rituals to celebrate the dead have meaning today. We love to dress, parade, feast, prank, remember past loves and tell stories in the dark. Like life, a 20×20 is fleeting, lasting a mere 400 seconds. Emcee Juliet Fromholt will be with us in the flesh to introduce these presenters:

Mary Sanders – Observing Halloween
Carolyn Bohler – Every Recipe in the Book
Angelina Hoschouer – Dayton’s Notorious Dead
Casey Moninghoff – Fermentation is our Friend
Tim Waggoner – The Art of the Horror Story
Justin Risner – The Late Great Dayton Triangles
Joy Levett – Festivals that Honor the Spirits
Tony Kroeger – Haunted Dayton
…others may walk among us…

There will be beer. Free to attend. Kind donations and spirits welcome.
