Dayton’s “Kings of Karaoke” Celebrate 15 years

October 3, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Mark Hall and Curt Delk celebrate 15 years of Karaoke Hosting

One of Dayton’s favorite places to let loose is Soft Rock Cafe in Centerville.  It is a dedicated Karaoke bar, where up to 4 nights a week, you can sing your heart out.

For over 15 years the duo karaoke hosts of Curt Delk and Mark Hall, have been jazzing up audiences with fun shows, one liners, back up vocals, and birthday shots.  The formula has made these two the most popular and well-known “KJ’s” (karaoke jockeys) in the Miami

877 E. Franklin St Centerville

Valley.  Mark hosts Thursday night shows and occasional Sunday special edition karaoke.  Curt hosts the Friday and Saturday crowds and the ruckus that ensues.  It is part “the voice” and part comedy club as the singers and the zingers fly.  Lots of fun is always had in this laid back atmosphere.   It is always a safe and enjoyable environment.  Food Adventures crunched the numbers and figure that over the past 15+ years, Curt and Mark have each separately hosted karaoke shows for over 160,000 people.

Bucket Specials

Now it is your turn to visit the Soft Rock, especially if you have never been.  The stage is set, the fog machine and light show begins … you’re on baby !  Live out your “American Idol” fantasies, or just goof off with friends, they have every song you could ever think of and every drink you could ever drink of …

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON SOFT ROCK CAFE:

–Dayton’s premiere Karaoke Bar, located at 877 E. Franklin Street, Centerville

–Karaoke Thursday, Friday & Saturday from approx 10pm-2am

— Full bar service and small menu available.  Specials on drinks include buckets of beers.  All beers are bottles or cans, and Soft Rock does carry some local brews.

—Rent out Soft Rock for private parties during the day on Saturdays and Sundays.  Contact the bar for more info : (937) 438-3093

Pizza

This wouldn’t be a Food Adventures article if we didn’t mention the MUST EATS …

Here we go …

MUST EATS at SOFT ROCK CAFE:

—PIZZA:
Its all about the pizza at Soft Rock… Thin crust, semi crispy and always piping hot. Whether a cheese pizza or 5 toppings it will always please the masses.

—BONELESS CHUNKS:

Full Bar service

Always improving recipe with different sauces. Garlic Parmesan is the ticket.

—LITTLE BEERS:
A Must “drink” if you will. Served in a shot glass it is a mild, yet nice shot.

Honorable Mention Drinks: Try a SCOOBY SNACK or NICOLE’S KNOCKOUT PUNCH.

OCTOBER IS A BIG MONTH AT SOFT ROCK:

2 Annual events that have received a lot of attention over the years are again gearing up.

FRIDAY OCT 6th –
The 9th ANNUAL SOFT ROCK CONCERT FUNDRAISER TO CURE BREAST CANCER:

Debonte Brothers Concert

Always held in October, this fundraiser benefits the Susan G Komen fund.  This year the $5 donation at the door gets you an evening with “The Fabulous Debonte Brothers.”  They play 80’s music, classic rock and some hair band tunes as well. This night will feature raffle prizes and 50/50 giveaways as well as silent auction items.  Food Adventures loves these charity events.

Mark as Slash on Halloweeen

SATURDAY OCT. 28th
SOFT ROCK’S ANNUAL COSTUME HALLOWEEN PARTY:

Karaoke and costumes are the features of the night.  This is one of the biggest Halloween bashes in town !

Free Admission and Karaoke make this the best deal in town.

Soft Rock Cafe is a unique, locally owned spot that is a blast.  They have a great niche business, and you hear great singers all the way to singers who aren’t great but having fun.  All in all it is a good time and a great way to blow off some steam.

Another great event is every summer an event to prevent Multiple Sclerosis.  The Roger Gordon Memorial Golf Tournament is held every summer.  With a steak dinner at Soft Rock Cafe  afterward, it makes for one of the best bang for your buck golf outings.

For more tips on the best local places, like Food Adventures here on Facebook.

4 Course Campfire Inspired Beer Dinner At Lily’s

October 3, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

On Thursday, October 12 Lily’s Bistro is hosting Rhinegeist Brewery for a special Fall Campout 4-course pairing meal, lead by “Camp Counselors” James Burton of Lily’s Bistro and Trevor Sutherland of Rhinegeist Brewery.

“Our Sous Chef James has worked in kitchens before with Trevor, who now represents Rhinegeist in the Dayton area,” Emily Mendenhall, owners of Lily’s Bistro said. “This Campout idea came about because we wanted to celebrate the late fall weather in a fun way, hopefully outdoors on the patio.”

The Fall Campout will take place on the back garden patio with a backup plan of hosting it in the “mess hall” (bar area) if fall weather doesn’t accommodate.

“We want it to be a whole evening thing,” Mendenhall said. “We’ll have the fire pit going out back with marshmallows to roast over the fire and Kyleen Downes playing some singalong songs. So stick around, tell ghost stories and enjoy jacket weather and the warmth of a fire!”

The Fall Campout’s menu includes…

Arrival
– Welcome cocktail with Rhinegeist Bubbles and “trail mix” of spicy seasoned mixed nuts and dry cured salami.

1st course – paired with Peach Dodo
– Oyster on the 1/2 shell topped with a pickled red onion and micro radish “salad” dressed with fresh lemon juice.

2nd course – paired with Franz Oktoberfest
– Bibb & radicchio salad with a roasted pumpkin/octoberfest apple cider vinaigrette topped with gorgonzola and pepitas

3rd course – paired with Truth IPA
– Braised pork belly on a bed of creamy butternut squash polenta, topped with a au jus sauce served with lightly butter sautéed lollipop kale.

4th course – paired with Penguin Blonde Stout
– Gingerbread spiced pound cake with a warm fig reduction and garnished with pecan brittle.

For those interested in attending the Fall Camp Out, the event costs $39 and takes place at Lily’s Bistro on Thursday, October 12 at 5:30pm. Tickets are available online.

Burgundy Wine Tasting!

October 3, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

“The wines of Gérard Raphet are a Burgundy lover’s Burgundy. While the wine’s color in the glass is a delicate ruby, aromas and flavors surprise with their forceful intensity. This contrast often catches the uninitiated off guard, yet it is part of the attraction and seduction of these limited and highly sought-after wines.

Citizen Legion of Honor Award Goes To Bob Mills

October 3, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The Presidents Club of Dayton has announced that Robert W. Mills, Jr. is the 67th recipient of the region’s 2017 Citizen Legion of Honor Award. The award, given every year since 1951, is the oldest, most continuous and prestigious recognition of volunteer servant leadership in the Dayton region.
Bob Mills is founder of both Synergy Building Systems and Mills Development, two of the region’s top construction and land development companies in our area. Through Mr. Mills’ intense work ethic and vision for quality development in and around the I-75 and I-675 corridors, his companies have made a huge impact on the creation of office and residential space for decades.
Mr. Mills has generously served as a volunteer leader on more than a dozen corporate and not-for-profit boards over the last thirty years including Greene Memorial Hospital; the Air Force Museum; Wright State University Foundation; and the Dayton Development Coalition.
Most recently, Bob and his family created the Gala of Hope Foundation and have raised more than $6 million to fight cancer and improve cancer care in our region. Additionally, he and his family worked tirelessly to support Dayton Children’s new patient tower supporting local children’s needs for important healthcare services. “Bob has been an unwavering supporter of Dayton Children’s, giving gifts both personally and from his Gala of Hope Foundation. Bob has set the bar high for philanthropy. His Gala of Hope event was the first in Dayton to raise $1 million”, stated Deborah Feldman, President & CEO of Dayton Children’s Hospital.
Bob has been recognized for his leadership by the Dayton Regional STEM School; Beavercreek Chamber of Commerce; Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; the American Cancer Society’s Man of the Year; and with the Mathile Community Award.
Mr. Mills has given and done so much for our region and continues to do so through the Gala of Hope Foundation. The community and The Presidents Club of Dayton are honored to recognize Bob Mills at their annual luncheon event on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Dayton Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. through 1:15 p.m.

17 October Fundraisers You Should Know About

October 2, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

111810-charity“We have an attitude in this community of looking out for and caring for our neighbors,” said Mike Parks, president of the Dayton Foundation. “We’ve got philanthropic institutions in this community — the United Way, the Culture Works campaign, the community foundation — that give us a strong infrastructure to help people give to their neighbors.”

Dayton area residents give a greater share of their incomes to charity than Ohioans from other metro areas, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Local residents on average gave 4.6 percent of their discretionary incomes to charitable groups, compared 4.1 percent in Akron, 4 percent in Cincinnati-Middletown, 3.9 percent in Cleveland and 4.3 percent in Columbus. Discretionary income is the money remaining after residents pay taxes and costs related to housing, food and other basic necessities.

Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them.   To see the complete list of charitable events for 2017 check our DMM calendar.

Here are MostMetro’s list of  18 events not to miss this month:

Mystery Monday Oct 2

October 2, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Our photo from last week was the Walk of Fame mural that was dedicated on Sept 28th  in the Wright Dunbar neighborhood.  Created by artist James Pate, this project was a collaboration with K12 Gallery, HAALO, and Montgomery County Juvenile Court.  You can find this mural at West Third and South Williams Streets.  Ashley from Miamisburg, Rapid Fired Pizza is coming your way for correctly identifying this location!

And now for this week’s photo- do you recognize this place? If you know the location of this photo enter it here:  http://goo.gl/forms/dyU55fzc48.  We’ll let you know next Monday if you got it right!  Good Luck!

Rebecca Sargent – Artist and Educator

October 2, 2017 By Bill Franz

_M9A2535

Rebecca Sargent spends her days at K12 Gallery & TEJAS, Dayton’s leading arts education organization, which is in Dayton’s most colorful building.

_MG_7032

“I started volunteering at K12 eighteen years ago” Rebecca told me.  “Then I went to college at Wright State and taught art part-time at K12.  I left to go to grad school in Philadelphia and came back to Dayton at the perfect time.  K12 had just doubled their space and was adding TEJAS (Teen Educational Adult Studio).  I was hired to coordinate TEJAS on a part- time basis and I also did the “adjunct shuffle” – teaching at Wright State, Sinclair Community College and Stivers School for the Arts.  Then eight years ago I started working at K12 full time.  Recently I was promoted to Program Director.”

“Working for a non-profit can be challenging.  There’s so much work to do and the financial rewards aren’t great.  But I love it.  I feel very fortunate to be here.”

“Anytime I feel low, I can just walk around the building and see young artists like these, and then I cheer right up.”

_M9A8549

Rebecca makes her own art in a studio at her home.  She and her husband live in this home on a quiet side street in Dayton.

_M9A2485

Rebecca paints in a converted garage at the rear of her home. It’s an ideal space, with lots of light from skylights she’s added.  With the windows and the roses, it reminded me of a rustic cottage.

_M9A2488

When I entered, I looked for Rebecca’s work bench.  I make a habit of photographing work benches whenever I get the chance.  No two are ever alike.  Rebecca’s work bench didn’t disappoint, with its pens, pencils, brushes, papers for her collages, some paints, and a pile of garlic bulbs from her garden.

_M9A2594

Her painting work table was less individualistic, but more colorful.

_M9A2506

Before she starts a painting, Rebecca creates a collage that guides her as she paints.  This collage was taped to the wall to the right of her easel.

_M9A2503

When I visit some artists, they pretend to paint while I take photos. But Rebecca didn’t want to waste time. She had a few free days and she was going to make them count.

When I started watching her work, this canvas only had a background color. But in a relatively short amount of time Rebecca brought it to life, loosely guided by the collage.

_M9A2505

This painting was for an exhibition that Rebecca and Ann B. Kim were having at Dutoit Gallery called “Same Same but Different.”

_M9A2508

I asked Rebecca how long it takes her to complete a painting.  “Once I’ve made the collages and worked out ideas as a starting point, I typically finish an individual painting in a few weeks.  I’m a pretty fast painter and tend work in bursts.  However, an entire series of 12-14 paintings will take me an entire year to complete.”

“I create work in a series, working on several paintings at one time.  I tend to stop working on a painting before I totally finish it.  Sometimes I fear that I’ll “over-work” the piece, or need to work out a few more ideas before I feel like I can finish it.”

“My work typically involves structures and architectural spaces.  This series is different for me because I have added figures into these spaces.  This presents a new challenge so far as paint handling.  But I like this addition because it provides me the opportunity to further explore a narrative in my work.

_M9A2495

Before leaving, I asked Rebecca to lay down her brush and pose for me.

_M9A2520-Edit

_M9A2592

A month or two after this visit I went to Rebecca’s show at Dutoit Gallery.  I loved her work, especially the piece I watched her work on.  The title of the piece was great:  “Is Bill Still Watching?”

Parenting for Social Media with Teens and PreTeens

October 2, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Do you know who your children are connected to on social media?
Could you access their account if needed?
Do you know what platforms your teens are active with?
Do you know who can see your child’s information?
Do you know how to start a conversation with your children about social media?
Do you know which apps they use the most?

If you answered no to two or more of these questions…Bryan Suddith would like to help you build a strategy that does two things:

1) Protects your child
2) Makes you a more involved parent while teaching your child how to safely engage friends, family, and strangers via social media.

Far too often parents have to learn the ins and outs of social media after a crisis, or in the middle of a situation, they never expected.

As a father of two teens, he has waded these waters and often help other parents do the same. Give him 90 minutes of your time and you will change the way you approach social media as a parent.

“For $10.00 and 90 minutes of your time, I will change the way you look at social media in your home with your children. I am NOT against social media use by teens. I do believe it should be managed and observed by parents. I will give you practical guidance on today’s most popular apps and how to approach them with your child,” says Suddith.

Bryan Suddith is a digital marketing professional and is a frequent panelist and speaker on issues of social media, digital marketing, and online trends. He taught Elementary Sunday School at Far Hills Church for more than 10 years. Bryan has worked with children professionally as a social worker, worked in Juvenile Court system, parks and recreation and three YMCA associations as well as a volunteer and professional with two child and family based non-profits. His diverse career and experience have followed a passion for healthy children and families.
