FREE Pizza To Celebrate Old Scratch Pizza’s First Year

October 12, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

For a couple that met in culinary school, and turned an old 6000 square feet Standard Auto Parts store in an undesirable part of town, into the Miami Valley’s #1 Pizza Place (according to yelp reviews), you’d expect something special to celebrate the success of their first year of business.

Oakwood’s Eric & Stephanie Soller have a big celebration planned for Old Scratch Pizza’s first birthday on Wed, Oct 18th.  “We have been really overwhelmed by how generous our customers and the City of Dayton have been over the last year,” Soller said.  “We really wanted to say thank you.  And what better way to say thank you than free pizza.”

Join their text club by texting OSP to 797979 and you can  be eating FREE PIZZA at their Oct 18th First Anniversary celebration, which will run all day long starting at 11am.  Late Tuesday night, member of the text club will get a coupon that will be valid for the Wednesday anniversary party!

Old Scratch Pizza will also have the Trotwood trailer on hand with $3 Warped Wing beers, drink specials, door prizes and much more. According to Eric, “It’s probably going to get pretty  crazy around here on Wednesday.”

OSP is located at 812 S Patterson Blvd and is open six days a week, closed on Monday.

Old Scratch Pizza By the Numbers

1  – Years in Existence

12 –  Cones For A Cause Charity Partners

230  – The number of seats in OSP

800  –  the temperature of the pizza ovens

6000 – Whole Roasted Cauliflower Heads served

17,000 –  dollars donated to local non-profits

Through the Cones for a Cause program, each month they’ve partnered with a local charity and all revenue from their soft -serve ice cream are donated to that organization.  Between the donations and 10% of sales from a one night takeover event, OSP has donated $17,000 to organizations including, Secret Smiles of Dayton, Clothes That Work, House of Bread, Miami Valley Pit Crew, Girls on the Run, Bike Miami Valley, Brigid’s Path, Equitas Health, Oak Tree Corner, Helping Hands of Dayton and Crayons to Classrooms.  If you’ve got a charity that would like to partner, sign up on the OSP website.

OSP also features some of the best local, wood-roasted vegetables in town. Pictured here brussels sprouts, broccolini, corn on the cob and sugar snap peas pictured below are just some of the specials you can expect to rotate when in season.

Ralph Dull to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

October 11, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Ralph Dull, local farmer and environmental advocate, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement award tonight at 6 pm at the Partners for the Environment Annual Dinner at the Brukner Nature Center in Troy.

The Partner of the Year awards celebrate organizations and people that work to protect, preserve, and restore the environmental and agricultural resources of the Great Miami River and Little Miami River watersheds.

Dull, of Brookville, has worked tirelessly to protect farmland, promote sustainable agriculture, and use green energy in his family farming business. His family owns and manages several farms that are permanently protected with agricultural and or conservation easements. He also is known as a founder of the Dayton Peace Museum and he and his wife Christine were inducted into the Dayton Region Walk of Fame in 2011.

Dan Jackson, former staff with Montgomery Soil and Water Conservation District, also is being honored posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with communities to protect sensitive lands and promote conservation.

“The awards dinner is an opportunity to honor those who have done exceptional work and have provided us with inspiration and leadership,” says Sarah Hippensteel Hall, co-chair of Partners for the Environment.

A couple of other awards will be presented during the dinner.

  • Stephen Mackell will be honored with the Individual of the Year award. He is the co-farm manager with Mission of Mary Cooperative.
  • The Miami Valley Leave No Child Inside collaborative is being honored with the Partner of the Year award for its efforts to connect children in the Miami Valley region to nature and the outdoors by giving them opportunities to develop the skills and desire to become stewards of the environment.

The Partners for the Environment is an alliance of environmental organizations, government and civic organizations, and public and private educational institutions within an 18-county region in southwest Ohio. More than 70 organizations are connected to the alliance.

The Grande Dame of Ohio LGBT Film Fests Returns to the Neon!

October 11, 2017 By Joshua Stucky

For Jonathan Mcneal, LGBT films are as vital now as they were the first year when he and four sponsors presented Dayton’s now iconic festival. ‘Look around. We are under attack again, and that means being vocal, being clear and being strong. Our hope is to educate and build community through the film festival!’

Dayton’s LGBT film festival, a much-respected, much-antipated event, is the longest running LBBT  film festival in Ohio.
In it’s 12th year, the festival has one helluva line-up this year. ‘We have some must-sees,’ says McNeal.
‘God’s Own Country‘ is really amazing.’ Indiewire wrote about the film ‘…..It’s a British Brokeback but better…’ One film ‘Rebels on Pointe‘ will actually get two showings due to its overwhelming popularity.

The Dayton LGBT Film Festival runs from October 13-15th. The dates are not by chance. ‘I learned early on that October works best. Films premiere in mid-summer. We want to get what’s hot and fresh. And honestly, we moved from September because Oktoberfest and other festivals are just too much to compete with!’ McNeal adds.
The films are only part of the big weekend. There will be gay-themed items for sale from Agnes and Orson Gifts, and some very special guests. ‘We have six guests attending this year. 3 from SENSITIVITY TRAINING. 1 from ALASKA IS A DRAG. 1 from CURMUDGEONS. 1 from SOMETHING NEW. It’s incredible to see that many folks involved in film-making coming to Dayton. So proud of that!’ (**Spoiler, the actress/guest from Sensitivty Training is from Beavercreek…a local star!)

Sponsorships have grown exponentially from the early days. ‘We have had some sponsors, square one salon and the priority board, that have been involved since the get-go. They had faith in me and the Dayton Community. This year, we are excited to add Westminster Financial and AARP to the mix!’
The festival has had consistent growth and festival passes sell out quickly. The crowds are diverse, and although there are still some in the community who have the ‘not gay, no way’ mentality, that sentiment seems to be changing.
This is an interesting year for the film festival in many ways. ‘5 of the feature films are by women! Our opening film has big names like Bette Midler and LaVerne Cox. And the opening night will end with a great party at Mudlick Tavern.’
The kick-off party, sponsored by Neon Aficionados Lisa Hanuaer and Sue Spiegel, is a great opportunity to discuss the opening film, have a drink and meet the guests. ‘People love the party. It is a great community builder.’

For McNeal, a dozen years after taking his acclaimed RubiGirl Documentary around the LGBT film fest circuit, it feels great to share his vision of a more diverse, more accepting world here at home….in Dayton.

Quest for the Best Biscuits and Gravy

October 10, 2017 By Bryan Suddith

Since this column launched back in May I am often asked where I go for certain foods. Recently I was asked about biscuits and gravy. Here in Dayton, we are fortunate to have a good list of options for this breakfast delight.
I’ll be honest, it’s hard to beat my late Grandma Suddith’s scratch biscuits and sausage gravy she made in a cast iron skillet.  My aunt Jody makes the best bacon gravy I have ever had but she is 400 miles away on a hilltop outside of Phil Campbell Alabama. So when I need good biscuits and gravy I stop into these places to get my fill.

Mom’s Restuarant
1111 William C. Good Blvd.   Franklin, Ohio

Mon -Fri 5am-7pm
Saturday 5am-1:30pm   &   Sunday 6am-130pm

The lady that runs the place and makes the gravy. Her name is mom. I’ve been eating at her place since I was a little kid. Used to be over in Red Lion, which is the place where Ohio State Routes 122, 123 and 741 all cross between Hunter, Springboro, and Lebanon. It’s a diner homage to Kentucky and those who came from there and settled in Warren County. She offers a full menu all day but I’ve only ordered two things in my nearly 40 years of eating there. Biscuits and gravy and the Cheeseburger.
The biscuits are fresh and not from the freezer and the gravy has enough pepper and sausage that a side of meat is never needed. Eating there is like eating with family. They are located on St. Rt. 123 at I-75 (Franklin exit) by the truck stop a 1/4 east of the interstate. Side note: One of the few places to find Fried Bologna on the menu. Doesn’t get more southern than that.

Sweet Home Family Restaurant
4480 Powell Rd. Huber Heights (Old Troy Pike. Rd 202) 45424
Tues thru Sun 7am-3pm
Sweet Home is always a welcome spot for a home-cooked meal while surounded by good people.

A full order of biscuits and gravy is only $4.99 and it will fill you up. The breakfast menu is complete and I add home fries and a scrambled egg.

The biscuits are fresh and the gravy full of sausage. I add some hot sauce for a little kick and save 1/2 a biscuit for some jelly. It is not fancy, but you will feel at home with this breakfast spot.

Vinny’s Bar & Grille
2229 Dryden Rd    Moraine, Ohio
Mon – Fri 6am -8pm
Closed Sat & Sun
What was Gus’ Bar and Carryout is now Vinny’s. I mean. Since 2004. This spot is best known by the blue-collar crowd in Moraine. Located on the north end of Dryden Road Vinny’s is often overlooked as a lottery/beer/cigarettes/pop carry out kinda place. It is way more. It is one of the best quick breakfast joints in town and classic bar and grill at night.
Back when I worked in Jefferson Township on the west side of Dayton, I’d stop into Vinny’s for a biscuit and gravy to go with a cup of coffee. Sure you can grab a breakfast sandwich, bacon, egg, and cheese, but why skip the hearty biscuits and gravy? They do it right. Slow-cooked gravy, freshly baked biscuits and they keep a pepper shaker handy to add that extra fresh cracked spice on top. A small order is $2.75, but go ahead and get the full size (2 biscuits and gravy) for $3.75.
A bonus here: They break up the biscuit for you before topping with gravy. Makes it easier to eat on the run, or in the car like I do.

Tipp O’ The Town
1150 W. Main Street, Tipp City, OH 45371
Best known in Tipp City for homemade dinners and classic American restuarant atmosphere, Tipp O’ does a great breakfast. Don’t let the decor deter you. Sit, meet your server and enjoy some of the best home cooked food north of town. A large order only sits you back $3.99 and leaves room for a couple of eggs or home fries.
Sure you can get a Filey Mignon and eggs for breakfast, but why pass up the Biscuits and gravy? Breakfast is served all day and has never left me wishing I had gotten the burger or club. (Both really good choices for lunch though).

I’m always looking for a new spot north of town and south of town for a great biscuits and gravy. Tell us where you go to find yours. Bonus points if they are served all day!

Mystery Monday Oct 9

October 9, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

So a lot of you guessed the bar at Jay’s Seafood, some thought it was the Century Bar and a few even suggested Pat’s Bar on Linden, Coco’s Bistro and Carvers.   WRONG!

This lovely bar is located in the Amber Rose Restaurant in Old North Dayton.  They specialize in homemade Eastern European Cuisine including German, Lithuanian, Polish, Hungarian, Russian and Italian cuisines. The bar is made of imported Turkish marble, perfect for having an appetizer and spirits with friends.

The building, in which The Amber Rose Restaurant is located, was originally built in 1910 by Sigmund Ksiezopolski.  It ran as a general store and deli named Sig’s up until the 1980’s.  The family ran the general store downstairs and resided upstairs as their family quarters.  The National Guard stayed with the family during the Great Flood of 1913.

The Amber Rose Restaurant at 1400 Valley Street, near Children’s Hospital.

In 1989 Elinor Sluzas acquired the building with the intention of opening a restaurant.  Before the scheduled grand opening there was a horrific fire and a portion of the building had to be rebuilt.  The restaurant officially opened for business in 1990.  Elinor retired in 1998 and owner Joe Castellano bought the restaurant, and still uses many of Elinor’s recipes.

Congratulations to Justin Schondelmyer of Sidney- your correct answer won you free Rapid Fired Pizza!

And now for this week’s photo- can you identify the location it was taken?

If you know the location of this photo, please do NOT comment with the answer, but instead enter it here:  http://goo.gl/forms/dyU55fzc48.  We’ll let you know next Monday if you got it right!  Good Luck!

Dinner Party Download Starts Today on WYSO

October 7, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

You’re invited to join WYSO every Saturday, starting today at 10am for  “Dinner Party Download.”  Described as a fast and funny hour of culture, food and conversation: “public radio’s arts & leisure section.” In every episode you’ll learn a joke; bone up on an odd bit of history and then wash it down with a themed cocktail recipe; meet artists of note; have your burning etiquette questions answered; savor an emerging food trend; and hear your new favorite song.

RICO GAGLIANO has worked in public radio for over a decade. His pieces have been heard on All Things Considered, Weekend America, The Savvy Traveler and other series, but he was best known as a reporter on “Marketplace,” for which he filed stories from England, Ireland, Sweden, The Netherlands, India, South Korea and across the good ol’ USA. He also penned and performed many of the show’s “Marketplace Players” comedy sketches. Prior to radio, Rico worked as a TV writer on shows for MTV, ABC, Fox Family and The Cartoon Network… and as a freelance print reporter for LA Weekly, the Village Voice, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and others. He continues to contribute pieces to The Wall Street Journal and Dwell magazine. Rico co-created, performed and wrote for the circus-like L.A. sketch comedy troupe The Ministry Of Unknown Science, which at various times required him to drop his pants on stage, stand fully clothed in frigid ocean waves for half an hour, and stand way too close to the explosion caused by detonating a sex doll filled with propane.  The troupe had a top-10 video podcast on iTunes and filmed pilots for Spike TV and the SyFy Network. Rico holds an MFA from the American Film Institute. He’s been a fan of dinner parties since childhood, when it meant he got to eat in his parents’ bedroom and watch TV all night while the grownups sat around in the dining room getting wine-tipsy.

BRENDAN FRANCIS NEWNAM has been winning dinner parties since first taking a seat at the kid’s table at his family’s holiday gatherings. Granted, by then he was in his 20s and had graduated from Rutgers at the top of his class while the rest of his tablemates were toddlers, but, still, a victory is a victory, even if you make a 5-year-old cry. A long time foodie, during the height of America’s cupcake craze, Brendan sought refuge in Europe, where he wrote and edited travel guides, music reviews and celebrity profiles for various websites and magazines, including Vice and Blackbook, and delivered lectures on the ontology of the gin martini. But even la dolce vita gets old, and he returned to America to embark on a career in law. But after earning a JD and spending a summer fighting for prosecutorial reform in Bulgaria, he was seduced by public radio’s siren call. (Or maybe that was the sound of corduroy rubbing?) Before launching The Dinner Party Download, he produced and reported for national public radio shows including “Marketplace,” “Marketplace Money,” “Fresh Air,” and “Weekend America,” and, in his spare time, created and produced “Audiovant,” one of the first music interview podcasts. Though he now has a stable income and is chipping away at his law school debt, Brendan continues to freelance for various outlets, including Dwell, Modern Farmer, Saveur, and CNN.com, where, in 2011, he penned a series of travel tales called “The State I’m In.” Brendan is also a past Knight Media Fellow, and lest you think he has a face for radio, the national fashion website Racked named him a “style icon,” and that’s without even knowing about his tattoo of the word “tattoo.”

JACKSON MUSKER wears many party hats. He calligraphs and hand-delivers invitations to our Guests of Honor. He folds napkins into endangered species for our Main Courses (to raise awareness). And he serves as the test subject for every cocktail, which is an issue on Deadline Friday. Jackson landed his producer position after reporting/producing stories for L.A.’s beloved arts & culture show Off-Ramp. Prior to his radio gigs, he studied English at Duke University and double-minored in History and North Carolina-style BBQ. Jackson enjoys writing fiction, teaching kids, critiquing movies, butchering other languages, and bemoaning the Dodgers’ annual collapse. He has contributed to NPR’s Morning Edition, The California Report, the San Francisco Bay Citizen, and Cyberfrequencies.com.

MICHELLE PHILIPPE loves bite-sized dinner party food and doesn’t talk with her mouth full. Which is really important when she’s narrating our “History Lesson with Booze” segment.  In addition to telling you what happened this week in history for DPD, she tells you what’s coming up tomorrow in the “Marketplace Datebook.” Michelle, herself, tries to live in the moment. She does that as an actor. And until she lands her dream job playing an evil alien space queen, she considers herself lucky to have a pretty cool job at Marketplace. Though she doesn’t have the proper wardrobe for it, Michelle is also an amateur gardener. She grows tomatoes which she loves to eat and which her husband loves to compost.

‘You Can’t Take it With You’ – Wright State University – The American Family

October 4, 2017 By Russell Florence, Jr.

The delightfully chaotic Sycamore household remains a charming portrait of unconditional love and appealing diversity as evident in Wright State University’s lighthearted and attractively designed staging of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy “You Can’t Take it With You.”

(left to right) Kyle Krichbaum (Mr. DePinna), Mackenzie Kasbaum (Essie Carmichael), Christian Henderson (Donald), Jeremy Farley (Ed Carmichael), Logan Kitchens (Paul Sycamore), Danni Hepp (Penelope Sycamore), Zach Fretag (Boris Kolenkhov), George Heddleston (Tony Kirby), Katie Sinicki (Alice Sycamore), and Isaac Ingle (Martin Vanderhof/Grandpa) are featured in Wright State University’s production of “You Can’t Take it With You” (Photo by Erin Pence).

In the midst of the kookiness at the center of this character-specific romp about a close-knit family with big personalities and zany hobbies is a thoroughly engaging love story merging two distinctively opposite families. The bond between middle class Alice Sycamore (cute and coy Katie Sinicki evoking 1930s nuances) and her Wall Street boyfriend Tony Kirby (dashing, amiable George Heddleston) absolutely holds the emotional core of this relatable if overstuffed classic together as their relationship blooms, fractures and heals. When Tony’s uptight parents visit the Sycamores for dinner, situations turn prickly and uncomfortable (Alice scolding her family for their odd behavior always stings), but the truths that arise from misunderstanding give value to the show’s embrace of universal acceptance.

Director Joe Deer, in his first non-musical outing for WSU, keeps the pace brisk and the comedic timing sharp overall, specifically staging a joyful Act 2 finale complete with fireworks and confetti. However, there are a few offbeat moments when laughs are forced or completely over-the-top, notable miscues particularly apparent in Christine Fiala’s erratic take on alcoholic diva Gay Wellington. Even so, Deer coaxes strong portrayals from many principals. Standout work extends to a terrifically heartfelt Isaac Ingle as Grandpa Martin Vanderhof (whose unique views on income tax and living life to the fullest are hallmarks of the script), Danni Hepp as Penelope Sycamore (her savvy handling of the play’s significant “personality game” is a highlight), bubbly Mackenzie Kasbaum as aspiring ballerina Essie Carmichael, adorably square Jeremy Farley as Essie’s husband Ed, Kyle Krichbaum as eccentric Mr. DePinna, the imposing Zach Fretag as passionately earthy artist-instructor Boris Kolenkov, the wonderfully resonate duo of Kenneth Erard and Heather Cooperman as the Kirbys, Kennedy Cook (a senior at Stivers School for the Arts) as dutiful Rheba, and Christian Henderson as Rheba’s boyfriend Donald. The cast includes Alexia Vlahos as Grand Duchess Olga Katrina, Logan Kitchens as Paul Sycamore, Nick Wasserbauer as Henderson, Thomas Sheffer as G-Man, Jake Siwek as Mac, and Dean McKenzie as Jim.

Additionally, Deer’s fantastic artistic team includes scenic designer David J. Castellano (his handsomely detailed and colorful set is a character of its own), costumer Courtney Zimmerman (providing eye-catching period outfits), lighting designer Jennifer Watson, sound designer Silas Sheckels, dialect coach Deborah Thomas, and properties master John Lavarnway (supplying an authentic printing press).

At a time when our great nation is wounded by tragedy and divided by policy and presidency, “You Can’t Take it With You” represents the best of America. After all, we are our better selves whenever we can accept each other’s differences and unite.

“You Can’t Take it With You,” dedicated to Dr. Mary Donahoe, Professor Emeritus, continues through Oct. 8 in the Creative Arts Center Festival Playhouse of Wright State University, 3640 Col. Glenn Hwy., Fairborn. Performances are Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. The production runs 2 hours and 35 minutes with two intermissions. Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 students and seniors. For more information, call (937) 775-2500 or visit liberal-arts.wright.edu/theatre-dance-and-motion-pictures/box-office.
