Kansas To Rock The Rose

April 30, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Throughout the spring and summer of 2018, KANSAS will be performing a set of KANSAS Radio Classics.  Fans will hear songs they have heard on the radio, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, and Classic MTV since 1974.  With more Top 100 hits in the set than ever before, KANSAS Fans will also hear some classic B-Sides, fan favorites, and material off the band’s latest studio album, The Prelude Implicit. The legendary band will make a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Friday, July 27th.

With a legendary career spanning more than four decades, KANSAS has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. This “garage band” from Topeka released their debut album in 1974 after being discovered by Wally Gold, who worked for Don Kirshner, and have gone on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Composing a catalogue that includes fifteen studio albums and five live albums, KANSAS has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show), and two one million-selling gold singles, ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ and ‘Dust in the Wind.’ KANSAS appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ‘70’s and ‘80’s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ continues to be one of the top five most played songs on classic rock radio, and ‘Dust In the Wind’ has been played on the radio more than three million times.

2016 marked the release of “The Prelude Implicit,” KANSAS’s fifteenth studio album. The wide-ranging progressive rock album was released on InsideOut Music, and marked the band’s first studio album release in 16 years.

Throughout 2016-2017, the band celebrated both the release of “The Prelude Implicit” and the anniversary of breakout album “Leftoverture” with the highly successful KANSAS: Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour. That tour was released in 2017 as a live album, “Leftoverture Live & Beyond.”

The band, which is currently comprised of original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, keyboardist David Manion, vocalist/keyboardist Ronnie Platt, violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale, guitarist Zak Rizvi, and original guitarist Richard Williams. KANSAS continues to perform in front of large and enthusiastic audiences around the world.

Along with constant touring, KANSAS continues to remain a fixture of Classic Rock radio. The band has reached a whole new audience through their unmistakable presence on the popular video games Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and through their songs’ inclusion in various television shows such as ‘Supernatural,’ and ‘South Park,’ and with films ‘Old School,’ and ‘Anchorman.’

We Tasted Greene County!

April 30, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Yesterday hundreds of people enjoyed the 21st Annual Taste of Greene County at the Nutter Center.  Twenty area restaurants provided samples for attendees for just a $20 ticket ($15 if you bought in advance).  Restaurant booths lined either side of the floor with plenty of table seating in the middle.  Volunteers from the Beavercreek Youth Council did a fantastic job of busing tables and keeping the trash from piling up.

Dayton Dining attended the VIP seating, which opened an hour before the general admission seating, well worth the extra cost of $25 to be able to walk up to each table with no lines.  We made it through each booth and were dropping our ballots for the Best of Voting by about 12:15pm, just as the rush of the crowds were lining up at the booths.   We always look forward to this taste because the restaurants really do a good job of bringing great samples of their cuisine and the portions are plentiful. Our favorites this year included the Salmon Ravioli from Chef Justin White at The Wright Place at the Holiday Inn Fairborn, Giovanni’s Garlic Chicken Soup and the Naked Cowbell from City Barbeque.  The Soin Medical Center went all out with a Day at the Movies theme, serving up an impressive five different tastes. We were disappointed with the no show from Bravo! as we usually look forward to their Lobster Bisque.

Here are the results from the people’s choice voting:

More Mural Art in Progress

April 27, 2018 By Bill Franz

A group of volunteers from Synchrony Financial work on a new downtown mural under the supervision of Brittini Brill Long. Brittini is the Community Engagement Coordinator for Montgomery County Juvenile Court who facilitates the HAALO program. The mural is on Stone Street, near the Neon Movies. HAALO people will be doing the bulk of the painting this summer, with help from artists from K12 Gallery and TEJAS. HAALO stands for Helping Adolescents Achieve Long-Term Objectives.

Brittini showed me the design for this block long mural. The original idea, from artist Morris T. Howard, would have used only two panels on this long concrete wall. But that original idea has grown, and the mural will now fill all of the block’s 21 panels. The mural is called The Land of Funk, and will incorporate designs from several Dayton artists. I’ll be sure to share more photos as the project continues.

Metaphorically Speaking presents I Love Sex & Poetry

April 26, 2018 By Guest Contributor

Producing gritty, sexy, energetic, poetry slam competitions is how it all began five years ago for the poetry collective Metaphorically Speaking. Today the group has morphed into a major player in Dayton’s arts and entertainment community. The group has moved from producing monthly poetry slam competitions to producing full stage productions to nearly sell-out crowds. On Saturday, April 28 at Victoria Theatre Metaphorically Speaking will present I Love Sex & Poetry, a comedic tale about what happens when sex becomes the focus and center of our relationship goals.

I Love Sex & Poetry features Metaphorically Speaking founders/spoken word artists Tony “Ace Metaphor” Nalls and Jay Martinez. Spoken word artist LeRoy De’Vaughn Bean, actress/dancer Vanae Iesha, lyricist JiGi Deniro, and entrepreneur Gerard “Fly Guy” Williams, II round out the cast with Musical & Technical Director R. Allen Frost providing the soundtrack and backdrop for the show. “This show is different than what our fans have seen with the Love Sex & Poetry theme,” says co-founder Tony “Ace Metaphor” Nalls. “It’s a funny take on what we place value on in relationships, and how no one act or emotion equates to happiness. This production is a voyeuristic interaction with love, sex and all of the things in between.”

Metaphorically Speaking has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a monthly poetry slam competition. Early shows saw modest turnouts but commitment, hard work, and dedication have yielded significant growth for the group. Each performance at the Victoria Theatre has grown with a nearly sell out show in January 2017. The group seeks to sell out the venue for I Love Sex & Poetry. “This journey has been amazing,” said Natasha R. Moreland Spears, COO, “We are consistently pushing ourselves individually and collectively to deliver the best product, the best show to our audience. We are committed to artistry and excellence.”

Metaphorically Speaking is not a small, exclusive group of artists. It is a collective that incorporates all forms of art to support and engage the broadest aspects of the community. This is most evident in the group’s work with elementary and high school students through partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, HRC and Dayton Public Schools, and the Montgomery County Juvenile Department. “Poetry is an amazing form of expression,” said co-founder Jay Martinez. “It’s a place to dump your secrets, your fears, and your hopes without judgement or vulnerability.” Metaphorically Speaking is creating movement of poetry and the arts that is expanding; broadening both its artistic and academic components.”

The four partners of Metaphorically Speaking, Tony Nalls, Jay Martinez, Natasha R. Moreland Spears, and Frank “Buddy” Pitts, are excited about the future of the collective. From the launch of an academic arm later this year to the growth of its entertainment endeavors, the collective is positioning itself for longevity. “We are methodically and consistently expanding our brand,” said Pitts, the company’s strategist and graphic designer. “As creatives, we are always looking at new and innovative ways to expand our territory while remaining true to who MS is and to our fans.”

Metaphorically Speaking’s I Love Sex & Poetry will take place Saturday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Victoria Theatre, 138 N. Main Street in Dayton. This show is rated mature for language and adult content. Tickets range from $33.50 to $83.50 and may be purchased at www.ticketcenterstage.com. To stay up to date on all things Metaphorically Speaking, check out their Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat pages @metaphoricallyspeakingdayton.

With Scenes Filmed in Dayton ‘The Old Man and the Gun’ Release Date Set

April 25, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Fox Searchlight has announced David Lowery’s “The Old Man and the Gun” will make its debut in theaters October 5th, 2018.

The film, which spent two days last May shooting at the Liberty Center, from atop the Talbott Tower and on Second Street in downtown Dayton, is said to be the final screen performance for star Robert Redford. The film, also starring Casey Affleck, Danny Glover and Sissy Spacek is the true story of Forrest Tucker (played by Redford), who escaped prison at age 70 and went on an unprecedented string of heists. Casey Affleck plays the detective who becomes obsessed with Tucker, while Sissy Spacek is the love of Tucker’s life. The October opening suggests a fall film festival debut at Venice, Telluride, or Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

FilmDayton reports that in just the two days of filming in Dayton brought an economic impact of over $208,000 to the region.  With a crew of over 100, over 75 extras and the cast, the production company payed for parking in the Arts Garage, booked rooms at the UD Marriott, ordered food from Marion’s Piazza, Lucky’s, Table 33, Boston Stoker and Dorothy Lane Market. They payed location fees to Liberty Tower, Key Bank, Talbott Tower, 1st Financial, contracted with the Dayton Police and payed rental fees to Art’s Rental, Enterprise Rent A Car and Dayton Cultural Arts Center.

The increase in interest and visits to our building increased substantially and we loved sharing the history so many people. We’ve had so many first time visitors since the filming. The number of requests from photographers to shoot in the building has also sky rocketed. The exposure has been great for the building and is encouraging to us as we work to repurpose this historical site.”
Jenna Kreitzer, Building Manager of Liberty Tower

We had the opportunity to be part of the movie by doing the dry cleaning and laundry needed by the costume department. We hope to continue being useful to the film industry in ONE way or another.”
Carl Ballachino, Owner at Reiber Cleaners

We were unsure what to expect with the street in front of our business closed down for 2 days, we didn’t get our normal lunch time pop of business, but it turned out our sales were higher than usual, We had so many first time guests who’d come down to enjoy the excitement of the stars and the filming. Our guests and staff were excited by the star sightings and overall it was a great experience.
Chris Harrison, Table 33 Owner

The Old Man and The Gun was filmed here taking advantage of The Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit, which provides a refundable, transferable tax credit of 30 percent on production cast and crew wages plus other eligible in-state spending.Currently at $40 million year, the credit would increase to $100 million annually under House Bill 525, which is awaiting legislative action to expand program.

Where Makers Get Supplies and Get Inspired In Dayton

April 24, 2018 By Guest Contributor

MENDELSON’S LIQUIDATION OUTLET | SUPPORTING MAKERS IN DAYTON SINCE 1960.

Mendelson’s Liquidation Outlet, located in the heart of the Gem City, is “The first place to look for every last thing.” You might wonder how you pack full a half million square foot building. The answer is simple, Mendelson’s buys product overruns, excess inventor, product returns, seconds, and liquidated business assets from all over the world. It is not whether or not they have what you need but rather can you find it. Mendelson’s was founded in 1960 by Harry Mendelson as an electronics surplus store and has grown into a liquidation outlet offering a more diverse range of products.

HOW TO SHOP AT MENDELSON’S

Your first trip to Mendelson’s can be a little intimidating especially if you are the nerdy maker type. Don’t worry, you will be a better maker for it. For millennials like us you rarely get the opportunity to procure goods the way our parents and grandparents did. Haggling and handshakes have been replaced by Amazon and Walmart. Do yourself a favor and jump right into the Mendelson’s shopping experience!

To start, you dig through shelves of electrical components to find that perfect vintage gauge to finish off a project and you take it to the counter and you haggle. There is a mutual understanding, they know you would have a hard time finding such an amazing gem somewhere else and you know it may be 5 years before someone else wants to buy that part. Only fools don’t haggle at Mendelson’s. The rarer the item the more opportunity there is for a deal. Sandy Mendelson is a man of his word and values an old-fashioned handshake deal. The shopping experience mirrors this old-school philosophy many of us miss.

340 EAST 1ST STREET | A HISTORIC BUILDING

The seven-story building was built in 1916 with additions in 1929 & 1940. It is bordered by Race Street, First Street, and Second Street. General Motors built this 539,904 SQFT manufacturing facility, known as Delco Plant #2, to produce electric motors and generators. The building was built for heavy industrial use with 7 elevators including a freight elevator with a 30,000 lb capacity and one of the last manned elevators in the country. The top floor also has remnants of a foundry. Our favorite feature of the building is the 100ft tunnel that connects the basement of Plant #2 with the Delco Lofts building, GM Plant #1. While it’s use has long been discontinued, the thought of workers using this tunnel for many years is humbling. Someday if the current Mendelson’s building is ever turned into condos, gym, bars, community center it would be amazing to see this tunnel repurposed.

WHAT YOU CAN FIND AT MENDELSON’S

When someone asked where to get a certain part of a project we find ourselves constantly recommending they visit Mendelson’s. Many report back that Mendelson’s is the single greatest resource for inventors and makers while others are completely overwhelmed by adventure. We recommend you schedule your own visit.

Electrical: Motors, resistors, potentiometers, switches, buttons, legs, capacitors, wire, heat shrink, power supplies, plugs, bus bars, fuses, tubes, actuators, relays, industrial light fixtures, fans, limit switches, inverters, transformers, power strips, buzzers, alarms, microphones, timers, thermo switches, coils, amplifiers, micro switches, etc

Mechanical: Gears, bearings, linear guides, bolds, screws, nuts, carts, equipment, cable ties, clutches, pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders, springs, valves, magnets, pumps, gauges, chains, sprockets, etc.

Furniture: Banquet chairs, office chairs, kitchen equipment, tables, display cases, shelving, fixtures, hair salon chairs, office supplies, etc.

Just a short list of miscellaneous items: Mannequins, marble countertops, bowling pins, business signage, pizza boxes, NCR cash register parts, dishware, clocks, sporting goods, small engine parts, books, security cameras, furnaces, medical equipment, boots, gloves, etc.

TRUST US. THIS LIST DOES NOT EVEN SCRATCH THE SURFACE!

THANKS, SANDY!

A week prior to our visit we reached out to Sandy Mendelson, the owner, and he agreed to give us a full tour of a couple of his buildings in Dayton. We met first thing Saturday morning and were pleasantly surprised that Sandy could spend much of the day with us. While only 2 floors of Mendelson’s are open to the public Sandy declared that nothing is off limits so we hit every floor including the roof and the basement tunnel. Yes, I said tunnel. If you are visiting Mendelson’s and happen across Sandy, ask him to tell you a story. You will not be disappointed. The Mendelson Family is one of many reasons Dayton is the Gem City.

Tanks Late Night Eats, Now Just On Weekends

April 23, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

For over 30 years Tanks Bar & Grill on Wayne Avenue has been a great late night option for dining.  But that will no longer be a weeknight option. Over the weekend Tanks posted a note on Facebook letting it’s customer know that their hours would be changing:

To all our most valued customers. To continue to give the most phenomenal experience Tanks will be adjusting our hours. Due to decrease in late night business and finding quality staff our new hours starting Monday April 23 will be as follows

kitchen hours- sun, mon, tue, wed, thurs are 7am to 10 pm
Friday and Saturday our kitchen 7am to 1 am
Bar will be open till 11 on sun-Thur. And until 2 on Friday and Saturday

Please note all carryouts must be phoned in 30 minutes before kitchen closing.
you may of course order food up until closing time of kitchen to enjoy in dinnig room. We will have been in Dayton 31 years In May and want to continue to serve Dayton and our Great Customers! You are the reason for our work, not the interruption!

If as many people as commented on the post where eating there late nights on a regular basis, this probably wouldn’t be an option, but as management posted on their Facebook page, “We simply do not have enough business late at night. It is not fair to ask employees to stay late in hopes enough customers come in so they do make some money. After 11 most of the time we have 10 customers in 3 hours for 3 servers.”

They were quite reassuring that Tank’s is not closing- just adjusting business to the trends, and that will help us all be able to enjoy those great grilled cheese sandwiches, girlie omelettes and Tankburgers for many more years!  And if you know of any experienced restaurant alumni that might be looking for a job-send them Tanks way!
