McCoy on Movies: Rampage

April 14, 2018 By Tabari McCoy

Rampage proves not all video games deserve to be movies … Especially when they’re this bad.

“Wait! Stop – I’ve got a better movie coming out soon!” Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) and George (Jason Liles) in New Line Cinema’s and ASAP Entertainment’t action-adventure RAMPAGE. Credit: © 2018 Warner Bros. Entertainment.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Dwayne Johnson, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Naomie Harris, Jake Lacy, Malin Akerman, P.J. Byrne, Marley Shelton, Breanne Hill, Jack Quaid, Matt Gerald, Jason Liles, Demetrius Grosse and Will Yun Lee

WRITER(S): Ryan Engle and Carlton Cuse & Ryan J. Condal and Adam Sztykiel (screenplay), Ryan Engle (story)

DIRECTOR(S): Brad Peyton

WEB SITE: www.RampageTheMovie.comHERE’S THE STORY: Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is a primatologist who loves working with his buddy George (an albino gorilla performed by Jason Liles) more than he does with people. But unbecknownst to him, the cunning and manipulative Claire Wyden (Malin Akerman) and her halfwit brother Brett (Jake Lacy) are the heads of a Chicago-based corporation that conducted an experiment that will soon change George’s life forever. You see, Claire and Brett have come up with a pathogen engineered by disgraced scientist Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) that can weaponize anything that comes in contact with it.

So, when George starts to grow in size and aggression, Davis is understandably concerned since he doesn’t know or understand what is happening to his friend. But, once government cowboy Harvey Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) tells him about the 30-foot wolf also on the loose, he starts to get an idea.

… Just wait till they all find out about what has started swimming off the coast of Florida …

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Children under 18; people who just need a few explosions, fight sequences and simple jokes to make them happy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan fans; people who like gorillas

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? Dwayne Johnson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan fans; anyone paying attention

SO IS IT GOOD, BAD OR JUST AWFUL? Two things I’m going to admit right off the top of this review:

(1) As a professional wrestling sports entertainment fan, I have for the better part of going on 20+ years been a fan of the man once known as The Rock, Dwayne Johnson. As my all-time favorite in-ring performer, I’ve seen nearly every TV and film role the man has done, save for The Game Plan, San Andreas and The Tooth Fairy – the latter two of which are regarded as, while somewhat commercially successful, among his worst work. (I mean there’s always The Scorpion King, but everyone has to start somewhere.)

(2) I grew up as a child during the 1980s, when arcades were plentiful and rich, glorious after school haunts where hordes of children would congregate to play the latest in the still relatively new technology of video games – and oh, how glorious those days were! There was Punch-Out! (long before Mike Tyson came into the mix), Paperboy, Dragon’s Lair … And then there was Rampage. The inspiration for the video-game-within-the-video-game-movie Wreck-It Ralph, Rampage was a simple, side-scrolling beat-’em-up that had a simple concept: Three human beings had been mutated – George into a giant brown gorilla, Ralph into a huge werewolf … And a woman named Lizzie into a huge alligator – by a mega-vitamin, radioactive lake or food additive. As you fight off military forces trying to stop you, you eat people hiding in buildings while smashing buildings, clearing a level once you had finished obliterating the structures present to little more than rubble. And if your character’s rampage stopped, you were reduced to a very embarrassed human being walking off screen with your hands covering the parts a leaf would if this were the Garden of Eden.

And that was it. A game simple enough in its execution and enjoyment that seemed as basic as your could get for 1986. Problem is, someone decided that classic by Midway Games needed to be a nearly two hour movie. Wanna know what 40 year-old me learned that nearly 10 year-old me didn’t know back then?

Sometimes its best to leave childish things to children … because as much as I love Dwayne Johnson and the Rampage video game, Rampage the movie is a prime candidate for the 2018 Golden Raspberry Awards and deservingly so. For this movie is an absolute gorilla-sized horrible excuse of a B (or F) movie that thankfully Harambe will never see.

I almost don’t even know where to really start with Rampage. I mean, Johnson tries his absolute best to make the film anything close to salvageable, but given the downright cartoonish brother-sister villain combo played by Akerman and Lacy (who also deserve Razzies for their “work”), the “I’m Negan 24/7 now” smiling slickness that is Morgan’s performance, the fake “I’m a soldier – I can’t listen to anything close to reason!” colonel that is Demetrius Grosse (channeling his inner Thunderbolt Ross right down to the high-and-tight mustache) and the “here’s the answer for everything even though I seem clueless as hell” scientist played by Harris, there is no other option even close to choose.

George might not only be the best character but best actor in the film, which is either a CGI triumph or a travesty for his human counterparts, if not both. (At least Joe Manganiello had the common sense to take a role that obscures his face so that most people won’t even notice.)

Of course, the bad acting is only possibly outdone by the film’s dialogue – which sounds like a 12 year-old wrote it with the help of his slightly smarter but still immature older brother. Of course, when you make every scene predictable so you can sit in the audience and deconstruct it as it unfolds on the screen Mystery Science Theater 3000-style with direction that feels copycatted from just about any other monster movie you’ve seen, you can’t be surprised at the “how is the hero surviving moments that should have killed him five times over?!” action sequences. (Seriously, for a man with no superpowers, even Bruce Willis’ John McClane would have said “C’mon man – you’d be dead by now!”)At the advance screening I attended, there were more than enough audience members who laughed at a few of the film’s borderline-level dad jokes, liked the monster fights and ignored the straight illogical (even for the world the film creates) actions of the film’s characters. Then again, plenty of people once thought the world was flat … And many people who are not scientists (or who have never paid attention to science) still think it is.Unfortunately, the only thing flat is Rampage – because this film is so corny/ridiculous, it might make smart audiences go on one back to the ticket office demanding their money back.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Celebrating Yellow Springs Brewery’s 5th Anniversary!

April 14, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Saturday, April 14th Yellow Springs Brewery is celebrating their fifth anniversary of crafting and sharing their brews with the super supportive Ohio craft beer community! Fifth anniversaries are traditionally known as the “wood” anniversary so this celebration has a special significance to them as wood serves as an integral part in aging, conditioning and flavoring craft brews. They’ve decided to show their appreciation to our loyal customers with a barrel- and wood-aged Birthday Bash!

Master Brewer, Jeffrey McElfresh has created a limited release white oak IPA in honor of this special occasion and it will be available in 12 oz. cans for $12 per 4-pack. This IPA is aged with American white oak staves giving it a sweet, earthy bouquet with warm vanilla overtones. Dry hopping lends a piney and grapefruit flavor that enhances the soft character of the white oak. And there’s no better way to enjoy this delicious IPA than in their new limited-edition 5th anniversary glassware! This Perl Goblet style glassware features a design by Just A Jar Design Press in Marietta, OH, and has a delightfully low price tag of $10!

This celebration is loaded with opportunities to obtain limited-edition brewery merch and we will feature a series of timed raffles from 2-9 PM. The day-long raffle includes prizes from House of Aum, Current Cuisine, Dino’s Coffee, The Winds and many more! Raffle tickets will be sold as a pack of 5 tickets for $5 or 20 tickets for $10 and all proceeds from the raffle will benefit Glen Helen Nature Preserve. They will also be on site for the Birthday Bash to hand out special gifts to those who become members during the celebration! Culinary options include the incredible wood-fired food of La Pampa Argentinian Grill and Bella Sorella Pizza! There will also be selling a limited-edition woodcut poster, created by Just A Jar Design Press, which will be on sale for $15. Only 100 of these have been printed!

The hit of the day may very well be the selection of some of the area’s most rare and sought after barrel-aged beers that will be featured on our taps! YSB’s resident beer curator, Chris Hutson, has managed to acquire a list of brews that is sure to please the palate of even the most particular beer geeks out there. Two bars will be set up for timed trappings of our celebratory beers. These taps will occur once every two hours starting at 2 pm with White Oak IPA, with the last tapping at 7 pm! Don’t miss out on this anniversary extravaganza, join Yellow Springs Brewery in celebration of 5 years growing with this amazing community!

French Toast Breakfast Taco Trial – Only in Dayton

April 11, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Taco Bell is trying out French toast as a breakfast taco shell with the recently launched test of the new French Toast Chalupa –  available only here in Dayton.

Taco Bell describes the shell as “fluffy and cinnamony.” The French Toast Chalupa comes filled with scrambled eggs, a choice of bacon or sausage crumbles and a side of syrup and is selling for $2.49 each.   Instead of a shell, it has a taco-shaped piece of French toast which is basically a soft flatbread (AKA their gordita shell) shell that’s been deep fried.

The test item marks the latest in a long line of attempts by Taco Bell at making other foods into a taco shell. There was the  Waffle taco shell, the fried chicken shell, a croissant shell, a quesadilla shell, and a biscuit shell.  We’ll have to see if this one is a winner.  Let us know in the comments below if you try it and what you think!

Here’s a quick guide on where to find these  crispy, melty, buttery and cheesy sandwiches around town:

Tank’s Bar and Grill, 2033 Wayne Ave

Dublin Pub, 300 Wayne Avenue

Then Monster Grilled Cheese is cheddar, monster jack and swiss cheeses melted between three sices of toasted sour dough bread (we add bacon to this and order a side of pub fries).  There’s also an option for the Angry Monster which is made with a smoky ghost pepper jack cheese and Irish rashers for those that like it spicy!

The Deli at Webster Street Market, 32 Webster Street

Humane Society of Greater Dayton To Expand

April 10, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Today, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton officially purchased land at 2673 Austin Blvd. in Miamisburg, near Austin Landing to build a new adoption center.

“This new facility will be a wonderful gathering spot for our community. We are excited to add a location that will be a place for all families to come and visit regardless if they are looking to adopt or just want to enjoy the amenities we will provide there,” said Brian Weltge, President and CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. “After many years of research and listening to the needs of our community, we have determined this high-traffic area will be a perfect location for our adoption center. We are excited for this next chapter in our organization’s 116-year history in serving the Miami Valley and look forward to helping to save even more lives through this expansion.”

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton purchased the land from the Miami Township Community Improvement Corporation for $572,000. This includes 3.8 acres of land as well as an approximately 10,000-square-foot structure, which they plan to repurpose to fit their needs. A large portion of the funding for this purchase came from estates that were set aside to support the organization’s growth initiative.

“The sale of this property to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton gives the township another avenue to provide quality services to the citizens in our community,” said Miami Township Board of Trustees President John Morris. “A piece of land that was once used for storage will now be a bustling place where we can all come together to help celebrate the bond between people and pets.”

Prior to building the new adoption center, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton plans to expand their current facility at 1661 Nicholas Road in Dayton to include a high-volume spay/neuter clinic, which in a few years time will be able to spay/neuter an estimated 20,000 animals each year. With their current facility, they are capped off around 4,000 surgeries annually. In addition, they also plan to build a needs-based, full-service animal hospital to act as a resource for those who have pets, but may need some assistance. At their current facility they are also building a structure to better house animals that come to our facility through cruelty and neglect investigations.

“We want to transform animal welfare in the Greater Dayton area with our vision for the future,” said Weltge. “We are thankful for the partnership we have created with the Miami Township Board of Trustees to purchase this land and look forward to this new site being a go-to spot to help all of the animal lovers in our community.”

In addition to the land purchased for the new facility, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is partnering with Miami Township to address the stray cat problem plaguing their community. We will be offering a Community Cat Initiative where residents of Miami Township can rent humane traps from the shelter. These un-owned cats are then humanely trapped and brought to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton where they will be spayed/neutered and eartipped, an international symbol of a stray cat who has been altered. This will help lower the number of community cats reproducing in the township and provide a humane solution to residents.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is dedicated to building a community in which all animals are valued and free from suffering and family life is enhanced through the relationships with pets. Founded 116 years ago, it is the largest no-kill animal welfare agency in the Miami Valley. It focuses on pet adoptions, eliminating pet overpopulation, providing education and ensuring the humane treatment of all types of animals. For more information about the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, call (937) 268-PETS (7387) or visit www.hsdayton.org.

Help Make Pups on Patios Legal!

April 9, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Want to drink a pilsner with your poodle or a latte with your labradoodle? While there are some places around town that allow it, currently Ohio bans dogs on restaurant patios due to the health code.   But current legislation is trying to overturn that law!In a letter from one Ohio Health Department they explain “Live animals may not be allowed on the premises of a food-service operation or retail food establishment.  Certain exceptions are allowed, such as a service dog helping a disabled person, as long as the animal’s presence doesn’t pose a threat to food contamination.

The letter concluded that because patios and open air bar-type areas are considered “food premises,” any ”‘pups on porch’ or similar events” are in violation of state health codes.

How You Can Help Change the Law:

A bill has been introduced in both the Ohio house and the senate that would allow the decision to be up to the business owner whether they allow dogs in their outdoor dining areas.

If you are an Ohio resident in support of HB263 and SB182, contact your State Rep. and let them know you want them to vote YES on HB263 and SB182!!

To find your Rep:
Head to www.Legislature.ohio.gov and click on the Contact link; find your 4 Digit zip code extension & contact your rep!

Civic Innovation Lab Launches Crowd Funding Campaign

April 9, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Just off of Courthouse Square is a small office that has been making some big things happen in the Dayton Region.  The Collaboratory serves as Dayton’s Civic Innovation Lab, the brainchild of Peter Benkendorf.

In order to grow the Dayton region’s economic and social capital, the Collaboratory provides the Collaborative Infrastructure—the physical space, portfolio of initiatives, engagement tools and support system—for people from across the region to come together to imagine and act upon new possibilities for themselves, each other and the community, with a particular interest in downtown.

Not unlike the Reference/Help Desk at the Library, people are constantly being directed or finding their way to The Collaboratory. They provide counsel and support in the following areas:

  • Visioning: help people think through where they are and where they want to go.
  • Planning: help develop action plans to realize the vision.
  • Connecting:  they help connect individuals with the right people and organizations to help them implement their plans and realize their vision.

In order to keep the Collaboratory running, they’ve launched a month-long crowd-funding campaign, with a goal of $50,000 to help support the development of its new initiatives, which include:

  • Dayton Regional Solar
  • Miami Valley Regional Healthcare
  • Legacy Poverty Project
  • Impact Dayton
  • Regional Purchasing Initiative
  • Bloomberg Philanthropies $1 Million Public Art Challenge

‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Timely Tenderness

April 9, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

In Neil Simon’s wonderfully endearing 1983 semi-autobiographical dramedy Brighton Beach Memoirs, situations involving a report card, a first date, a tense dinner, a lost salary, a heartbreaking letter, and more poignantly arise as remarkably presented by the Human Race Theatre Company at the Loft Theatre.

Splendidly directed with captivating realism by Marya Spring Cordes and set in 1937 Brooklyn, Brighton Beach Memoirs finds Simon borrowing from the best. As the relatable, fussy and close-knit Jerome family deals with sacrifice while their patience wears thin in cramped quarters (Dan Gray’s outstanding two-story set oozes intimacy in spite of its size), Simon’s comedic sensibilities are expectedly substantial from colorful talk of liver and cabbage to the glories of baseball and raging hormones. Still, it’s easy to recognize the folksy ferocity and poetic beauty of Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Lorraine Hansberry when the compelling story shifts to dramatic conflicts centered on workplace woes, sibling turmoil, health concerns, financial burdens, and the growing possibility of additional family members abroad arriving at a moment’s notice to escape the Nazis. Over the course of a breezy three hours, Cordes handles Simon’s delicate balancing act with seamless finesse, allowing for fascinating sequences when certain characters are not the central focus. In fact, some of the most expressive interplay occurs upstairs while the main action transpires below. Cordes’ cinematic mastering of the seen and unseen – having an actor pause in a hallway, creep downstairs to assess commotion, or quietly contemplate alone in a bedroom – fuels the production’s genuine look at a blended family constantly in motion.

The charming Eric Deiboldt truly radiates as 15-year-old Eugene, Simon’s lively alter ego and the familiar catalyst of his Eugene Trilogy (including Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound). Using his spunky physicality to the utmost while displaying marvelous narrative skills and command of Simon’s intricate rhythms, Deiboldt exuberantly engages as Eugene’s pivotal coming-of-age twists and turns. As Eugene’s restlessly discontented older brother Stanley, the handsome and impressive Richard Buchanan vulnerably conveys Stanley’s uncertainty of his place in the world as he faces the responsibilities of adulthood. An emotional Lisa Ann Goldsmith fiercely inhabits the headstrong Kate, a stern matriarch blessed in the present but bruised by the past. The terrific Rory Sheridan is equally strong as Jack, the hardworking patriarch who values the importance of family and desperately tries to keep his intact, especially in a tear-jerking scene in Act 2. Sonia Perez brings lovely complexity to her portrayal of Blanche Morton, Kate’s widowed sister still trying to navigate life and parental obligations while longing to break free and start anew all the same. The vibrant Katie Sinicki, a Wright State University junior acting major, offers a breakthrough portrayal of Blanche’s feisty daughter Nora, particularly shining opposite Perez in a heated, Gypsy-esque showdown that never resorts to overblown melodrama. Oakwood High School student Julie Murphy also delights as Nora’s sickly sister Laurie, an introverted bookworm and the only underwritten role in the play which is odd considering the depths of the other characters. Nonetheless, this show is perfectly cast and the Human Race should honestly consider reuniting Cordes and her actors for Broadway Bound in the 2019-2020 season.

In addition to Gray’s set, a character of its own, the production is artistically bolstered by David Arevalo’s attractive period costumes ranging from casual adolescent attire to snazzy evening wear, John Rensel’s expertly mood-capturing lighting, Jay Brunner’s first-rate sound design and enjoyable original music, and Heather Powell’s nifty properties including an authentic sewing machine.

A widowed schoolteacher once reminded a group of inquiring ladies to cling very close to those you love. Considering the nation’s current chaotic climate, specifically families breaking apart by their own free will or through government decree, Brighton Beach Memoirs, an All-American defense of immigration, is suddenly more relevant than ever before. “The world doesn’t survive without families,” Kate declares. See for yourself why she’s right, and in doing so, you’ll experience one of the best productions in Human Race history.

Brighton Beach Memoirs continues through April 22 at the Loft Theatre of the Metropolitan Arts Center, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings; 7 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesdays evenings; and 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. There will be a post-show talkback after the April 15 performance. Act One: 85 minutes; Act Two: 70 minutes. Tickets are $35-$40 for adults; $32-$37 for seniors; and $17.50-$20 for students. Prices vary depending on performance date and seating location. There are a limited number of $12 and $25 side area seats available for each performance. For tickets or more information, call (937) 228-3630 or visit www.humanracetheatre.org or ticketcenterstage.com.
