Sat, Nov 3rd is National Sandwich Day – Check out the Deals!

October 31, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Saturday, November 3,  National Sandwich Day

Never underestimate the power of a good sandwich, there’s something special about the best of the worlds toppings slipped between two slices of bread. Mayonnaise as a sandwich dressing? You betcha, slices of pickle? Of course! French fries? Don’t look at us like that, French fry sandwiches are delicious! The fact of the matter is that if you like something on its own, you’ll almost certainly like it dressed up for the ball in bread and toppings. Sandwich Day celebrates them all.

History of Sandwich Day

There is a commonly known story about the history of the word sandwich, and it’s attributed to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. One piece of that history that’s rarely discussed is the meaning of the word Sandwich and the town it comes from. Sandwich is a city in the shire of Kent in England, originally the word was spelled Sondwic, and then Sandwic, and ultimately in 1086 as Sandwice. The name of the town came from its purpose and its claim to fame, it was a market town. So what does Sandwich actually mean? “Market Town on Sandy Soil”.

John Montagu was the 4th Earl of this town, a royal title that essentially means ‘chieftain’ and placed them in charge of a territory in the King’s stead. John was a well a known lover of card games, and it’s said he originally ordered his meat to be delivered to him between two slices of bread so that he would not get his grease laden fingers on the card, nor require a fork to eat.As people heard of this, they started ordering their food “The Same as Sandwich”, and eventually just “a sandwich”. From such things are legendary culinary delights born. Sandwich Day celebrates both the Earl himself, and the wonder he brought to us in the form of the sandwich.

Turning Point for Ace Asian Cafe ?

October 31, 2018 By Dayton937

Teriyaki Salmon in a Bento Box

When familiar faces struck a deal with The Greene to again take over the closed Choe’s Bistro, it was a case of old owners, cleaning up a new owners mess.  Michelle and Charles Yang managed “Choe’s Asian Bistro” from December 2014 through March 2017.  After turning it over to new management, back rent and tax questions forced The Greene to close the restaurant.  The Yangs came back to the rescue re-opening the eatery in April 2018.  Today, after 7 months, new management has fine tuned their dishes. They will be adding a new chef and new menu additions are around the corner.     The Food Adventures Crew has exclusive scoop on what could be the turning point for Ace Asian Cafe.

Outside of Ace Asian Cafe

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON ACE ASIAN CAFE at THE GREENE:

— Located at 4394 Juniper Way at The Greene outdoor mall in Beavercreek, Ace Asian Bistro has a menu that encompasses many countries, including THAILAND, CHINA, KOREA, and JAPAN.

— The restaurant is open
Monday – Thursday: 11:30am -10pm,
Friday: 11:30am – 11pm
Saturday: Noon – 11pm
Sunday: Noon – 9pm

Option for a Korean BBQ Table with built in grill

— Ace Asian Cafe is currently developing some new specials for kids and seniors, as well as special discount days for Air Force members.  Could we see a weekly special of endless sushi?  Plans are also in the works for a special Food Adventure Tour of Asia !  Stay tuned to Dayton Most Metro for info on the December event.

— Then menu highlights are a full-blown list of sushi offerings, an option to sit at a table with a Korean BBQ built in, Pad Thai and Chinese Dishes.  Want some Sake?  They’ve got you covered there with a full selection and a cocktail rich bar.

— Besides a full dining room, sushi bar and cocktail bar, Ace Asian Cafe has a 50 person upstairs seating area for private events. It also has a Korean BBQ seating option for about 24 seats in the dining room.  The ambiance is elegant and makes it feel like you are at a special occasion.

— Menu prices are typically $12.95- $14.95 for entrees.  Lunch Bento Boxes are a great way to try a variety of foods and run about $10.95.  Sushi Rolls run from 8 bucks to about $13.50.

We have had good service on our visits here.  The wait staff was attentive and friendly.

Time to explore the menu which takes on an entire continent.

Our patented “must eats”…

MUST EATS at ACE ASIAN CAFE:

Calamari and Sweet Chili Sauce

—CRAB RANGOON:
The old standard and everyone’s favorite, seems to be the most popular menu item here. Nice and creamy and a sauce like you have never tasted before for dipping. It is a smoky sweet n sour sauce.

— BENTO BOX WITH TERIYAKI SALMON:
One of the best ways to sample the menu is through a Bento Box. And at the lunch price of $10.95 it is economical.  You pick 2 entree dishes and it is served with a spring roll, rice, orange slices and a salad.  Your entree choices include pad Thai, sushi rolls, Korean Bulgogi, Curry dishes and Chinese entrees.

— CALAMARI IN SPICY CHILI SAUCE:
Deep fried calamari rings with a fantastic dipping sauce. The sweet sauce and spice, is the perfect contrast to the light crunch. The calamari does not have a fishy taste at all.

Hot n Sour Soup

— HOT N SOUR SOUP:
Their version is definitely worth ordering. All of their soups are good, but this one is the best. Mouth watering with a touch of heat.

— YELLOWTAIL NIGIRI
Then simple thought of a fresh piece of raw fish and rice. If raw is your thing, try the Yellowtail. Dip in wasabi and soy sauce to complete the tasty deal.

— THE WASHINGTON SUSHI ROLL:
Our favorite sushi roll is this one. It features cooked Shrimp Tempura, Cucumber, and cooked Crab topped with Salmon, Avocado, Tobago, Wasabi Dressing, Sweet Sauce & Goma Dressing. The result is a sweet and crunchy taste. If you like shrimp, crab and salmon, you must try this roll.

— GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN:
They have a nice take on an old favorite. Medium sized chunks of deep-fried shrimp, tossed in a light brown sauce with stir fired vegetable surrounding the plate. A good, old-fashioned staple of Chinese cuisine done right.

— CHICKEN BULGOGI on the KOREAN BBQ TABLE:

General Tso’s Chicken

You or the server get to cook this shredded marinated chicken on the table side grill. It is a fun experience and the aroma as the chicken cooks is amazing. A few minutes and sizzles later, and you have a piping hot chicken grilled dish in front of you. Served with rice, the grilled onion and spices are a perfect blend.

Honorable Mention:

Katsu Chicken Bento Box – A nice white meat piece, sliced and panko fried, drizzled with Asian sauces.

Blue Crab Stuffed Salmon – Baked Salmon with blue crab, stir fired vegetables and Asian spices.

Artist of the Week: Jennifer Taylor

October 29, 2018 By Bill Franz

Jennifer Taylor at K12 Gallery and TEJAS.

Jennifer is a teacher and administrator in addition to being an artist herself. Behind her you can see the work of some of her elementary school students. Jennifer recently became project manager of the HAALO program, where at-risk teens participate in projects like painting murals.

Jennifer is also a photographer, so she’ll be taking photos for K12 and posting them on social media. When she’s not working Jennifer photographs Dayton’s music scene. You can see some of her work on her facebook page and on instagram @jennifertaylor.photographer

Jennifer also directed a documentary I would love to see. It’s called “The Fall League” and it’s about Dayton’s senior slow pitch softball leagues. That may seem far removed from her work with music, but I understand that music is an important part of the film.

Luminaries of Dayton: Jacob Stickle

October 28, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer Leave a Comment

Jacob Stickle was born in Neckar-Thailfingen, Wurettemberg, Germany on February 26, 1825, son of John Jacob and Katerina Stickle.

Jacob helped his father on the family farm until he was old enough to be apprenticed to a butcher. He learned the trade of butchering and stayed in the business until he immigrated to the United States, landing in New Orleans on May 1, 1849. He arrived in Dayton on the first of June.

On his arrival Jacob started working for Adam Happle, a meat packer whose business was located on Valley Pike in Mad River Township. He worked for $7 a week and board. After two years Jacob had saved enough money to rent a butcher’s stand and later opened a stall in Harshmanville, on Yellow Springs Pike, which he attended for seventeen years.

In 1868, Jacob purchased the brewery of Sander and Stoppelman on Warren Street. When he started the business he decided to use only the best quality products, and to make his beer out of only barley, malt and hops.

In 1881, the City Brewery building burnt down. Jacob Stickle rebuilt and enlarged it at an expense of eight thousand dollars, building a three and a half story brick factory. The ice houses had a storage capacity of 2,000 tons and the beer cellars of 3,000 barrels. The first year the business made 4,000 barrels of beer and by 1882 the brewery was producing 7,000 barrels annually. The business required ten men and several teams for delivering the beer to local businesses.

Jacob married Barbara Drechsel on August 31, 1851 and they had two children. Jacob’s son, William, later helped his father run the brewery. In 1890, the business moved to 653 and 655 Warren Street. Jacob Stickle merged his brewery with The Dayton Breweries Company in 1904 and then sold out his part.

Jacob died on November 20, 1908 and is buried in Section 63 Lot 1126.

‘The Feast’ Review – Playground Theatre – Demons Within

October 26, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Ghastly, unearthly sounds shattering the psyche of a struggling New York artist provides the dramatic fuel for Cory Finley’s eerie yet bewildering 2015 Off-Off-Broadway comedic thriller The Feast, currently receiving an excellently chilling local premiere by Playground Theatre in the new PNC Arts Annex.

Rae Buchanan (Anna), Phillip Drennen (Man) and A.J. Breslin (Matt) star in Playground Theatre’s local premiere of “The Feast” Oct. 25-28 in the PNC Arts Annex. (Photo by Knack Creative)

Skillfully co-directed with contemporary horror flourishes and brooding intensity by Playground co-founders Jenna Valyn and Christopher Hahn, The Feast, the Playground’s fourth season opener, brings mental health to the forefront as Matt (a credibly shaken and overwhelmed A.J. Breslin) attempts to figure out why he hears something akin to “a dying whale” coming from his toilet. This is a serious concern, but Finley shortchanges the experience by not allowing a fuller picture into Matt’s background, particularly his childhood. The play’s freak-factor would’ve been raised significantly if, perhaps, Little Matt would’ve appeared to share a few scenes and offer a glimpse into what formulated the demons within. But as it stands, firmly in the present, Matt merely spends most of his time at odds with his girlfriend Anna (a resilient, mysterious Rae Buchanan) and encountering various individuals intent on making his emotionally damaged life more topsy-turvy including a frustrated plumber, an indifferent therapist and a close friend connected inside Manhattan’s thriving arts scene (all marvelously embodied with chameleon fluidity by Philip Drennen). Ultimately, Finley leaves many questions unanswered, opting instead for a plot meandering into predictable boyfriend/girlfriend revenge territory complete with an important meal served on the verge of feeling reminiscent of The Beguiled and Phantom Thread.

Rae Buchanan (Anna) and A.J. Breslin (Matt) are featured in Playground Theatre’s local premiere of “The Feast” Oct. 25-28 in the PNC Arts Annex. (Photo by Knack Creative)

Nevertheless, Valyn and Hahn, making great use of the Arts Annex’s thrust stage, fill the show with enough genuinely creepy moments to startle the senses, specifically bolstered by outstanding lighting design by Derek Dunavent and composer Skyler McNeely’s original soundscape splendidly blending pulsating suspense with rhapsodic melancholy. There is also an absolute whopper in the final seconds that makes this production totally unique and worthwhile, an apt description of the Playground pedigree.

The Feast continues through Oct. 28 in the PNC Arts Annex, Second and Ludlow Streets, Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. The play is performed in 65 minutes. Tickets are $15-$20 and can be purchased by calling Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visiting ticketcenterstage.com. Also, some of the various pieces of artwork in the show, which have been created by local artists, will be auctioned in support of Roochute, which “creates conversation about mental health and promotes acts of kindness to the world.” For more information about the auction, visit pgdyt.org/auction. For more information about Playground Theatre, visit theplaygroundtheatre.org.

Celebrate Francos 42nd Anniversary with World Famoso Spaghetti Dinner $19.76

October 26, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Franco Germano grew up in Italy, then came to America at age 18.  It wasn’t long after that he joined the Army, serving as a mess sergeant during the Vietnam War.  In October of 1976, he and his wife Barbara opened his dream, Franco’s Ristorante Italiano.  He often claimed he was simply carrying out the tradition of his “mamma”, feeding friends and family.

Franco’s “World Famoso” Spaghetti, a combination of egg, romano cheese, fresh roasted garlic and olive oil was a dish that Franco was extremely proud of.  As he described it, ” My invention.  Not creation.  Invention.  No one else can follow it.”

Now 42 years later the restaurant is run by his son Nick and that famous spaghetti is being offered with Franco’s sausage and a cannoli for just $19.76 this Friday and Saturday to celebrate the anniversary. To remember Franco, read this interview.

Lewis Black Joke’s On Us Tour

October 22, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Following the highly successful 2018 “The Joke’s On Us Tour,” Lewis Black has added Spring 2019 dates to the tour.  He’ll be in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 23 at 8pm
Taft Theatre.  His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

The GRAMMY Award-winning, stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently, a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

Reserved tickets: $65.00, $49.50 & $39.50 (plus applicable fees), go on sale Friday, October 26 at 11AM at www.tafttheatre.org, the Taft Theatre Box Office, and www.ticketmaster.com.  Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway as well as did one of his two HBO Specials BLACK ON BROADWAY. In 2015, Black notably voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy Award winning film from Pixar, “Inside Out.”

Additionally, Lewis Black does a live streaming show on Audible called THE RANT IS DUE. There is behind-the-scenes moments from the Lewis Black tour bus, as well as occasional phone calls to the people behind the rants. From hate for pickles to disdain for online dating, this show channels the rage of 300 million neighbors and truly has something for everybody. More show info can be found here.
