Trick or Treat For PEZ
Originally created in Vienna, Austria in 1927, PEZ started out as a peppermint breath mint. PEZ is an abbreviation of PfeffErminZ (German for peppermint)
The first PEZ mints were not served in modern day style PEZ dispensers, but rather were sold in tin containers, very much like modern day Altoids tins. It wasn’t until 1948 that the first PEZ dispenser was created and introduced at the Vienna Trade Fair about a year later. This dispenser was in the form of a cigarette lighter, which the company states was to market their bricks as “anti-smoking” mints, which one would think the design would probably have the nice side effect of making it popular with kids, similar to candy cigarettes and other similar product.
In 1955 they were introduced in the United States and in 1955, the Pez company placed heads on the dispensers and marketed them for children. Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse were among the first character dispensers created.
One of the first character PEZ dispensers, the shape of the 1955 Santa Claus PEZ model is both rare and valuable. Departing from the norm, the dispenser has a round body, although the candy inside remains the same traditional narrow rectangular shape.
Around this time, they also introduced fruity flavored bricks, which significantly boosted salesamong children. Some of the more valuable PEZ dispensers to collect are pre-1989 Superhero PEZ dispensers. Easily distinguishable by their lack of feet, these figures vary greatly in condition and rarity. Popular versions include Wonderwoman, Batman, and Bugs Bunny.
In 1973, Pez built a factory in Orange, Connecticut. In 2007 Elvis was immortalized on three different Pez dispensers that were even released in a Limited Edition 3 Pez Gift Set with CD The King lives on which can now be found on ebay for serious collectors.
In 2008, the first Star Trek dispensers were released in a gift set with the seven original series crew and the Starship Enterprise. A second Star Trek gift set, based on The Next Generation series, was released in Fall 2012.
PEZ dispensers have become such collectibles with Snow White and the seven dwarves, The Lord of the Rings, Kiss, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all part of the collections released by PEZ. Pezamania is the oldest convention, which has been held in Ohio since 1991, will host it’s annual convention in Cleveland this July 
18-20 and bills itself as “The World’s Largest Gathering of Pez Collectors”featuring an international group of master PEZ collectors, PEZ dealers, and PEZ authors.
PEZ isn’t just about cartoon characters and pop stars. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been turned into dispensers. There are also special additions sets honoring US Presidents. The volume 9 PEZ collectible gift set that includes Obama is running about $140 on ebay. There is even rumor that an an animated film version of PEZ are in the works,

OVI Checkpoint Tonight in Dayton
The Dayton Police Department, along with members of the Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County, will operate a sobriety checkpoint tonight from 8 pm to 1 am, first in the area of East Third and Terry Streets and then at South Keowee and East Fifth Streets.
The goal of the OVI Task Force is to reduce the number of alcohol/drug related traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities in Dayton and Montgomery County. Sobriety checkpoints help deter impaired driving and aid in the apprehension of those impaired drivers who make the choice to get behind the wheel and drive. The majority of the deadliest crashes occur on weekends.
Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête
The new exhibition opening at the Dayton Art Institute, Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête, is from contemporary African-American artist Mickalene Thomas and features several large scale photographs of influential and personal themes along with the artist curated works entitled tête-à-tête. Thomas is widely known for her complex paintings made of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel, but her photography is also an important and dramatic aspect of her work.

Mickalene’s large scale photographs of black women will evoke a diverse range of thought and emotion from viewers as they examine issues of femininity, beauty, race, sexuality, and gender in her work. Mickalene purposefully omits long descriptions beside her work so the viewer is able to create their own narrative without prompting from the artist. However, it is noteworthy that one of the first series of photographs in the exhibit features Mickalene’s mother Sandra Bush, a former fashion model who was a very influential in her life who eventually succumbed to kidney disease. Their relationship was not always easy and attendees can view a film shown inside the exhibit that deals with some of these aspects of their lives.
The photographs, being personal and influential, also share a theme of 70s decor and fashion that were a part of the artist’s upbringing. Mickalene was born in 1971 in New Jersey, so was very much a child of the 70s. Also, showing a playful but albeit daring side, there is a portrait of Mickalene in her alter ego that she wore sometimes on campus while attending Yale which undoubtedly rose the issue of “who belongs where” among students and faculty.

The visual conversation curated by Mickalene, tête-à-tête, further explores the ideas central to her work featuring photographers and key images which have inspired her. Artists in tête-à-tête include Derrick Adams, Renée Cox, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lyle Ashton Harris, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, Malick Sidibé, Xaviera Simmons, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems.

RTA Launches The FLYER- A FREE Shuttle Bus Service Downtown
It’s been talked about for years and now the RTA is making it happen!
The FLYER will be a shuttle-style service that will begin servicing the downtown and UD area in early November. There will be a launch event with local media and public officials on Courthouse Square on Friday, Nov. 9th.
The circulator will operate six days a week and is FREE for anyone to use. There will be signs posted at the designated stops. People can get on or off simply by waiting at the stop, and a Flyer should arrive in 10 minutes or less.
The Flyer provides easy access to offices, local dining, nightlife, entertainment, parks, hotels, parking, and all that downtown Dayton has to offer in 10 minutes or less. Three “green fleet” hybrid buses run on a continuous loop to provide quick service, and each vehicle is trackable through RTA’s real time products, including the free Transit app available for download in the App Store or Google Play. By offering this service for free to all customers, The Flyer opens up transportation access to downtown employees and residents, students at the University of Dayton and visitors to Dayton to all the city has to offer.
The Flyer will head north on Brown and Warren streets up to Jefferson Street and Patterson Boulevard.
The buses will drive west on Fifth Street, then head north up Main Street and then take a right on East First Street, before looping back around using Monument Avenue. Shuttle stops will be on both sides of the street.
This joint venture is being sponsored by CareSource and Premier Health, which will help their employee shuttles to parking lots near their offices. The bulk of the expense will be absorbed by Greater Dayton RTA .
“This is a great opportunity for University of Dayton students, faculty and staff to explore the wonderful arts, culture and entertainment in downtown Dayton and do it in a sustainable way,” said University of Dayton President Eric F. Spina.

#4 THE CUSTARD FILLED LONGJOHN WITH CHOCOLATE ICING:
The Oversized Persian With Nuts has a Cinnamon lining – it is impossible not to spill a nut
An American staple, done better nowhere else. The grill marks on the bottom, The icing that sometimes melts unforseen or sometimes stays rock solid. When it all comes together in a big bite and the custard squirts out, well, then you have liftoff.
#5 THE DEVILSFOOD DONUT:
The absolute perfect, #1 donut of all time to have with milk. Again, use the trick of zapping this donut 15 seconds in the microwave.. Get the biggest glass of milk you can find. Find a quiet area and indulge. Crossed eyes and moans are normal here.
#6 THE BACON MAPLE DONUT:
A new experiment and limited time donut. It is a Longjohn with maple icing, and bacon crumbles on top. inside is a butterscotch creme filling. It is new, and it is a hit. Ask when they will be making them next, so you can give them a try.

#7 THE GLAZED TWIST DONUT:
The most underrated donut in the case. A long, buttery twisted yeast donut with a hint of vanilla and cinnamon. It is a good bang for your buck too. It has that signature yeast taste from Bill’s, and is filling. Perfect with coffee.
#8 THE JELLY DONUT WITH WHITE ICING:
In the 80’s movie Strange Brew, Rick Moranis bribes a brewery worker with a jelly donut .. “Here .. it’s a jelly…” If that was a Bill’s Donut, he could have bribed the Canadian Government.
#9 THE ROUND VANILLA CREME FILLED with CHOCOLATE ICING:
Round Creme Filled with Chocolate Icing
It is a round donut with chocolate icing on top. the difference is in the filling is a white cream, like whipped cream. Again, the signature yeast donut that only us recognizable at Bill’s Donuts.
#10 THE BLUEBERRY CAKE DONUT:
A cake donut that is mixed with blueberries making a pleasingly purple donut. The donut is glazed and sometimes will have a chocolate or strawberry tint. This donut and a glass of milk is a ticket to heaven. Also great with a hot chocolate !
#11 THE POWDERED with CHOCOLATE CREME:
The messiest donut by far, but delicious as well. Get the chocolate creme filled for a trip back in time to your childhood. Passport not included. Neither is a bib or napkin and you will look like you lost a fight with a bag of flour if you eat it correctly.

#12 THE DUNKING STICK:
The oddest donut in the case. this old fashioned throwback is dedicated to the coffee lovers. Made specifically for dunking, this glazed donut is a yeast donut but has a cake feel. This long stick is an old favorite, but a new discovery for us in the pat couple of years.
# 13 THE SUGAR COATED JELLY DONUT:
A jelly donut rolled in sugar. The jelly is delicious and is the subtle feature here. Each bite has a slight crunch and the sweetness is perfect. A bit messy? Yes, But worth every napkin.

National Pasta Day Deals

Dayton Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) Parade and Celebration
Dia de Muertos is a unique and colorful holiday observed across Mexico, the southwestern United States, Latin America and right here in Dayton, Ohio. During Dia De Muertos people reminisce on the lives of loved ones who have died by creating and sharing ofrendas (Day of the Dead alters), food, sugar skulls, papel picado banners, processions, calaveras (skulls) music, traditional dance while wearing sugar skull painted faces and bright costumes.
The Dayton parade and celebration will include all of these traditional Mexican traditions with some unique Gem City twists.
Expect more than a thousand people to participate in this free and family friendly event. October 21st 2 – 8 PM.

Calling all bakers and architects with a competitive edge: The Dayton Holiday Festival is looking for the area’s most creative confectionary decorators to compete in the 13th annual Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays contest on Friday, Nov. 23. Entries will be judged and displayed for public viewing inside the Old Courthouse at Third and Main streets downtown on that day only, during the Grande Illumination and Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights from 4-9 p.m.
All ages and skill levels are invited to participate in this free contest by entering a gingerbread house in the child (12 and younger), teen (13-17), adult (18 and older) or professional category. Entry forms and a complete list of contest rules are available for download at www.daytonholidayfestival.org. Forms may be submitted to the Downtown Dayton Partnership at 10 W. Second St., Suite 611, Dayton, OH 45402 or by e-mail to [email protected]. Entry forms are due by Thursday, Nov. 15.
Traditional houses, replicas of buildings, a purchased kit or even cardboard entries are permitted — as long as all exposed surfaces are covered with edible materials. First place in each category will receive a prize package featuring a variety of items. Award ribbons also will be given to second and third place winners in each category. In addition, one amateur and one professional house will be selected as the “Best Houses on the Block,” and each will win a $500 cash prize.
“The entries get more creative each year,” said Sandra Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership. “The imagination and skill that goes into creating each of these gingerbread houses makes for a really special exhibit ― it’s always a fun part of our holiday season kickoff.”
Contest entries are to be delivered to the Old Courthouse between 10 a.m. and noon on Friday, Nov. 23. They will be judged from 1-2 p.m., and the winners will be notified by telephone. All contest winners will have the opportunity to be recognized on the Main Stage in Courthouse Square before the Grande Illumination tree-lighting ceremony at 7:45 p.m.

 Richard V. Reeves’s talk is titled, “Dream Hoarders: Tackling Inequality and Class in America.” This is on Monday, 7pm in Kennedy Union Ballroom and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in B and C lots only. Concert For a Cure. This Annual Acoustic Concert is to raise money and awareness in the month of October which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This show is for all ages. Funds raised will stay in the community to provide support in transportation, meals, comfort and to let them know they are not alone in this battle.
