‘Be More Chill’ Review – Sinclair Community College – Mind Games

October 7, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Composer Joe Iconis and librettist Joe Tracz’s contemporary musical comedy Be More Chill, a tuneful, silly and witty look at high school hell, receives an enjoyable, fun-loving regional premiere at Sinclair Community College.

Based on the novel by Ned Vizzini and breezily directed by Chris Harmon, Be More Chill primarily concerns uncool New Jersey teenager Jeremy Heere’s pursuit to become popular in order to win the heart of theater geek Christine Canigula. It’s a fairly simple yet relatable premise accented with a sci-fi twist when Jeremy takes a special pill called a SQUIP (Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor), a computer implanted in his brain that acts as a powerful puppet master, getting him to do whatever he’s told. Iconis and Tracz’s hip high school lingo hits the mark but they oddly fall short of creating substantive three-dimensional characters (Christine and Jeremy’s Dad are among the many underwritten roles). However, their savvy ability to frame the show as a relevant cautionary tale about bullying, peer pressure, depression, suicide, and the onslaught of social media, giving credence to lines such as “a shared negative opinion is the fastest social bond,” is a plus.

Anthony Dell’Aria is a wonderfully pleasant leading man, allowing Jeremy to be someone you can easily root for even as he becomes unnervingly overwhelmed and possessed by the SQUIP. Sweet and endearing Katelyn Pennington (Christine) brings lighthearted flightiness to I Love Play Rehearsal and A Guy That I’d Kinda Be Into. Outstanding Micah Koverman (Jeremy’s best friend Michael Mell) steals the show with ostracized finesse and provides a fantastic rendition of Michael in the Bathroom, an emotional, unforgettable soliloquy bound to resonate for anyone who has ever felt rejected, abandoned, isolated, or alone. Handsomely suave Jared Setser is a perfect fit for the SQUIP, oozing seductive and dastardly charisma in The SQUIP Song and The Pitiful Children. Joseph Herzog (Jake Dillinger) showcases his cool dance skills to the fullest in Halloween. DeShawn Christian (Rich Goranski) has a tendency to let his unbridled energy get the best of him, but he’s funny where it counts nonetheless. Rachel Charles (Chloe Valentine) and Brianna Babel (Brooke Lohst) delightfully join forces as a naughty pair of mean girls. Nikki Bentz (Jenna Rolan) comically leads The Smartphone Hour featuring nifty choreography by Rodney Veal. Christopher Goetz’s flamboyance as drama teacher Mr. Reyes would be better served with variety, but he’s very effective at conveying the stagnation within Jeremy’s Dad. Ensemble members include Elisha Chamberlin, Lydia Dye, Caitlyn Hood, Christopher Leavitt, Cormari Pullings, Tanner Titkemeyer, Austin Vega, and Valkyrie Williams.

Harmon’s artistic team includes scenic and property designer Terry Stump, costumer Kathleen Hotmer, lighting designer Marissa Childress, sound designer Sarah Parrott, and projection designer Jeffrey Brown. Music director David McKibben has a firm grip on the challenging score and great vocal arrangements, but lyrics are often muddled or incomprehensible perhaps due to the cast’s inability to hear conductor Bryon Dobbs’ orchestra located backstage.
Be More Chill originally opened at New Jersey’s Two River Theater in 2015 and gained a huge cult following thanks to its cast recording, which has had over 170 million streams. It also became the No. 2 most talked-about show on Tumblr after Hamilton, had a sold-out run off-Broadway this past summer, and is heading to Broadway in February. The sheer fact that Sinclair was able to secure the rights to one of the hottest shows in the country speaks volumes.
Containing humorous shades of 13, Avenue Q, Bat Boy, Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, Legally Blonde, Little Shop of Horrors, Mean Girls, The Rocky Horror Show, and The Wedding Singer, Be More Chill admirably addresses the importance of friendship and the value of loving and accepting yourself above all else.

Be More Chill continues through Oct. 13 in Blair Hall Theatre of Sinclair Community College, Building 2, 444 W. Third St., Dayton. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and Thursday at 7 p.m. Act One: 65 minutes; Act Two: 65 minutes. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Tickets for the Thursday performance are $10. All seats are reserved and available online at sinclair.edu/tickets. Thursday, Sunday and the first Saturday performances are ASL interpreted by student interpreters Catherine Johnson, Macy Reitz, Cecelia Shannon, and Destinie Warren. Due to content and language, the show is recommended for patrons 14 and older.

Luminaries of Dayton: Frederick and Otto Euchenhofer

October 7, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer 1 Comment

Frederick H. Euchenhofer was born in Switzerland about 1812 and came to American when twenty years old. For a few years he lived in one of the eastern states and then moved to Miamisburg in 1836. Frederick opened a bakery and confectionery store there, running a successful business until 1848, when he came to Dayton. He purchased the old Columbus House and ran it as a hotel until 1863.

In 1861, Frederick opened the Third Street Lager Beer Brewery on 1513 East Third Street. The brewery was made of brick, two stories high and had a cellar. In addition, there were three individual cellars, separate from the main building that were capable of storing 1,200 barrels. The brewery was bought by Miller and Ritzler in 1867, but Euchenhofer rebought the brewery five years later.

Frederick later changed the name of the brewery to Third Street Brewery about 1887. In 1888, over 3,500 barrels were being produced each year, most of them being consumed in the home. The annual trade for that year was in excess of $25,000.

Frederick was a charter member of, and a director in, the Teutonia Insurance Company of Dayton, which was one of the most successful financial institutions in the city. Fraternally, Frederick was an Odd Fellow and a member of the Harugari. The German Order of Harugari, sometimes called the Ancient Order of Harugari or by its German name, Der Deutsche Orden der Harugari, was a mutual benefit and cultural association of German Americans founded in New York City in 1847 that was at one time the largest German secret society in the United States. The objectives were mutual protection in a time of high German immigration and anti-German sentiment in the U.S., and preservation of German language and culture. The order forbade discussion of religion, politics, or social issues. The name Harugari comes from the old German word Haruc. It may be roughly translated as “The Teutonic spirit (or priest) of the oak tree.”

Frederick was a Lutheran and in politics a Republican. He was married twice. His only child from the first marriage, Albert, died in February, 1892. His second marriage was to Caroline Disher. They were married in Dayton and had ten children.

Frederick H. Euchenhofer died on February 3, 1891. Caroline died on November 22, 1938. They are located in Section 103 Lot 1619.

Otto Frederick Euchenhofer was born about 1857 in Dayton, Ohio. He belonged to the St. Luke’s German Lutheran Church. He was the father of four children.

Otto Euchenhofer took over the Third Street Brewery on 1513 East Third Street in 1892 and changed the name to Third Street Ale Brewery. Unfortunately, records show that the brewery slipped in business under Otto’s management. By 1895, the brewery’s yield was only 1,000 barrels, down from 4,000 in 1890. He sold the business to Henry B. Pruden and Peter J. Altherr in 1896.

Otto Frederick Euchenhofer died on May 20, 1912. He is located in Section 103 Lot 1619.

Area Fricker’s to Show Saturday’s “Biggest UFC Fight Ever”

October 5, 2018 By Dayton937

Fricker’s Boneless Wings

Local Fricker’s restaurants are betting you want to see some UFC action this Saturday.  They have loaded up on pay per view buys and are showing the closed circuit fight for free at area eateries.

The reason? This Satuday October 6th’s  at 10pm Eastern time fight between the well-known Conor McGregor and the favored Khabib Nurmagomedov, is being billed as the biggest UFC fight in history, so far.

And Fricker’s Restaurants are banking you want to eat some wings, while seeing someone get a chicken wing submission move.  UFC brass says they expect close to 3 million pay per view buys, a new record.

AT STAKE : Undefeated champ Khabob Nurmagomedov’s UFC LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

FIGHT HYPE:

Hatred between the two fighters boiled over this spring, when Khalib’s camp confronted McGregor’s sparring partner, sparking a tirade by McGregor where he hurled objects at Khalil’s Tour bus.  It causing smashed windows and injuries on the bus.  The result was charges being brought up against McGregor, who settled on community service and anger management classes.  Even the fan bases don’t like each other.

This difference in  styles will make for a fascinating fight

Fast forward to last month’s press conferences.  The press conferences and the hype for this fight have gone like a typical McGregor bout.  Conor has done most of the talking, ripping his opponents appearance and quirks, while threatening to dismantle him in a violent way.  Meanwhile the more polite Nurmagomedov, a Russian who has been a trained fighter from an early age has been mostly quiet.  Although he hasn’t responded much to the personal attacks,, Khabib Nurmagomedov is known as one of the most ruthless, aggressive MMA fighters on planet.

Below is the tale of the tape on this clash.  Should be a pretty frickin’ good fight ….

Artist of the Week: Douglas R. Fiely

October 5, 2018 By Bill Franz

I’ve admired Doug’s work for years, and I own one of his prints. Doug told me that he has a degree in printmaking but now does both painting and printmaking. He taught art at the high school level, and then at Defiance College, before retiring from teaching and moving to Dayton.

Doug’s paintings somehow turn seemingly simple drawings of everyday things into interesting art. “My inspiration comes from working with figures in different variations,” said Doug. “I raised chickens for many years, and they appeared in many of my paintings. I grew up near Grand Lake St. Marys so fish and water scenes are often in my work. I’m fascinated by the shapes, the contrasts and dissonance of things. I have a sort of modernistic, geometric style.”

When I visited Doug he was working on a few paintings in different stages, so I got some understanding for his overall process. He worked on one piece where the outlines of two fish were already drawn on the canvas in pencil. I watched him apply modeling paste over his sketch and then smooth it out with a piece of wood. Then he used a pencil to cut through the modeling paste in several places. “When I stain this piece” he explained “the stain will be darker along those lines.”

I also watched Doug work on two pieces that had already been stained and then painted. As he put the finishing touches on these pieces, he added dark lines that somehow made the painting seem more like a print.

To see if you like his work as much as I do, you can look at one of Doug Fiely’s engravings in the Dayton Kyoto print exchange now at Sinclair’s Triangle Gallery and you can see some of his paintings tonight at 6 PM. Mikee Michelle Huber Huber is opening her new studio at 903 N Keowee and Doug is one of the guests artists who will have work on display.

taste everything… a lot!
If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
My Mom,  Dad and my wife because they share the same love for food and fellowship as I. The fourth person is incredibly difficult to decide, I’ll have to give it some thought.
Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
Nobu Matsuhisa.. he’s my all time favorite chef. I admire his drive and determination to stick to his vision throughout the years in spite of so much adversity and opposition.
What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
usually visit one of the local parks for a walk or a hike and dine at one of the local eatery’s.
Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
I was vegetarian until I graduated high school. When I was younger my sister’s and I would spend the summers in Tortola with my grandmother. Her brother regularly brought her fresh whole fish from his morning catch. She would clean it, make broth out of the head and bones to use in soups and stews. This whole process at the time was foreign to me and maybe a bit weird and gross too! One morning I was being a total jerk and telling her that it’s disgusting and awful and she promptly picked up one of the fish heads, and hurrled it at me. That might have been when my deep connection to seafood began!!

‘School of Rock’ Review – Victoria Theatre Association – Redemptive Education

October 3, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Musical theatre has always had a deep affection for con artists. Whether it’s Evan Hansen overwhelming the Murphys or Harold Hill spinning River City into a tizzy, dubious individuals ultimately finding some sense of redemption at the hands of those willing to forgive is prime fodder for song. Wannabe rocker Dewey Finn is another example of this special con club as evidenced in composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, librettist Julian Fellowes and lyricist Glenn Slater’s charming and tuneful 2015 Tony Award-nominated musical comedy School of Rock, currently receiving an excellent local premiere courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series at the Schuster Center.

The national tour and local premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 2015 Tony Award-nominated musical comedy School of Rock continues through Oct. 7 at the Schuster Center. (Contributed photo)

Based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Jack Black and breezily directed by Laurence Connor, School of Rock applies the tried and true fish out of water scenario to Dewey, who gets more than he bargained for when assuming his sheepish roommate and best friend Ned’s identity when Horace Green Prep School calls for a substitute teacher. He knows nothing about traditional teaching, but is a major aficionado of rock music history which he uses to his advantage. Along the way, his adorably straight-laced and vulnerable students come to realize the importance of rock education while discovering new facets of their inherent purpose and potential as he transforms them into an impressive rock band.

Standing in the shadows of the aforementioned Black but providing a silly level of kooky all his own, Merritt David Janes is a real comedic find. His energetic, no-holds-barred take on Dewey hits all the right notes from delusional absurdity to surprising tenderness. Unsurprisingly, his best musical moments are in the classroom in rousing numbers (exuberantly choreographed by JoAnn M. Hunter) including You’re in the Band and Stick It to the Man. Lexie Dorsett Sharp wonderfully counters Janes as pleasantly uptight principal Rosalie, notably sending the lovely ballad Where Did the Rock Go? through the roof in Act 2. Layne Roate, friendly and supportive, gives a terrific national tour debut as Ned, whose conflicted devotion to Dewey and his domineering girlfriend Patty (Madison Micucci, solid) strikes a chord. The knockout students, playing their own instruments with maturity and finesse and providing a moving rendition of the anthem If Only You Would Listen, consists of Arianna Pereira (Shonelle), Leanne Parks (Katie), Jacob Moran (James), Alyssa Emily Marvin (Marcy), Julian Brescia (Mason), Grier Burke (shy, big-voiced Tomika), Cameron Trueblood (Freddy), Mystic Inscho (Zack), Sammy Dell (Billy), Theo Mitchell-Penner (Lawrence), Sami Bray (hard-nosed Summer), and Gabriella Uhl (Sophie). The versatile adult ensemble consists of Tim Shea, Deidre Lang, Sinclair Mitchell, Jonathon Timpanelli, Patrick Clanton, Liam Fennecken, Elysia Jordan, Hernando Umana, and Melanie Evans.
The first-rate artistic team includes scenic and costume designer Anna Louizos, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Mick Potter, and hair designer Josh Marquette. Musical director Martyn Axe leads a top-notch orchestra.

Offering hearty laughs while providing meaningful lessons in acceptance and good parenting, School of Rock is a feel-good winner worthy of many gold stars.

School of Rock continues through Oct. 7 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Act One: 75 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $26-$99. Call (937) 228-3630 or visit ticketcenterstage.com.

On Oct 3, 1920 4,000 people paid $1.75 for admission to watch the hometown Dayton Triangles defeat the Columbus Panhandles 14-0. The land for the park had been donated by Edward Deeds and Charles Kettering, the teams sponsors.

October 1, 2018 By LIbby Ballengee

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will kick off their 50th anniversary season with the long-awaited, much anticipated world premiere of The Bench: Journey Into Love. Created & directed by nationally renowned choreographer Kiesha Lalama, (one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch”) and featuring professional singing talent, The Bench – Journey into Love will be sure to be a hit! The work features original music and lyrics.

What do you get when you cross a love story with dance, theatre and song? The world premiere of a full-evening concert, The Bench: Journey into Love, by choreographer Kiesha Lalama. See what happens when a man and woman meet by a park bench, fall in love, have a family, and continue their love into the next life. The Bench – Journey into Love is a whimsical love story told through the influential lens of Fate and Destiny, who unite the charming Antonio and the beautiful Eva through magical serendipity. Emotions run wild as the young couple experience life’s delights and obstacles. This impassioned and passionate theatrical experience weaves together innovative story-driven dance and a gripping jazz musical score to create a timeless tale of love and family.

History & Halloween combine at Huffman’s Spooky Tour

October 1, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

If you’ve ever driven or taken a stroll down Linden Avenue in the Huffman Historic District, you may have been struck by the beauty of the tunnel of oak and linden trees that create a continuous canopy overhead. Or perhaps you were too distracted by the stately collection of Queen Anne, Italianate, and Eastlake Victorian homes. Especially in the fall, there’s a certain magic in the air in Huffman when jack-o-lanterns grace front porch steps and the leaves of the tree canopy transition to autumn colors.

This October 12th and 13th, that magic will be alive and well when the Huffman Historic Neighborhood Association puts on their biannual, guided home tour, “The Spirit of Huffman.” The Spirit of Huffman home tour’s tagline is, “Where Halloween and History Collide,” and, indeed it’s true, when the outing offers tour goers a visual feast of Halloween decorations and entertainment dispersed among the Victorian homes.

Participants of the home tour will be guided through the neighborhood, established in the 1860s through the 1890s  by William P. Huffman, stopping to tour nine unique homes: one totally renovated house, a home bought through auction, homes renovated through Rehabarama, one home that housed the neighborhood post office, and two houses that were doctor’s offices. They will encounter an extensive collection of Halloween decorations, marble mantles, one-of-a-kind woodwork, bay windows, original hitching posts for horses, original carriage houses, carpenter’s lace, fretwork, corbels, towers,  and curved-glass windows. Along the way, they’ll take note of Dayton’s first brick school house, two beautiful Victorian churches with active congregations, and an old market that is looking at a second life. They’ll hear about the importance of the community’s connection to the country’s largest manufacturer of bicycles.

Each time The Spirit of Huffman Tour is presented, visitors are entertained. In addition to being a tour of today’s homes, this is an energized evening walk through time.  Expect to meet up with Huffman residents of a century ago who are scheduled to make an historic return engagement this year – just in time to make the past live again.  Visitors are advised: It is likely you will be transported beyond the Victorian architecture you are coming to see. Come prepared for several “Close Encounters of the Huffman Kind” as they pull back the curtain on time, revealing William Huffman’s new dream for a diverse community of bankers, laborers, shopkeepers, and street vendors at a moment when it is all so exciting and new.  When you come, be sure to listen carefully. The winds of change are rustling through the prairie grasses outside the city. It is 1870 and thanks to one man’s vision, Huffman Prairie is about to transform into the vibrant “Inner East” of Dayton.

Tickets are on sale now! To learn more about the Spirit of Huffman Tour please visit their website at www.SpiritofHuffman.com, or contact [email protected]

A special thank you to sponsors DK Effects, LinkDayton, Blackbox Improv, Dayton Most Metro, St. Anne the Tart, Gem City Podcast and our great neighborhood of volunteers helping to keep the Spirit of Huffman alive.
