Healthy Yogurt Store Open in Springboro

March 4, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton’s newest yogurt shopped opened its doors today in the Marketplace at Settlers Walk. The Springboro store is the first franchise and the first Dayton store for this Cincinnati based dessert retailer, which specializes in  frozen yogurt that contains active cultures and healthy probiotics giving  Yagööt its delicious signature tart taste—that is actually good for you.

Owner Jess Onyango

Local owner Jess Onyango worked for 13 years as an accountant at MotoMan and says she “was too much of a people person to continue in that job” and knew she wanted to own her own business.  She’d visited one of the Cincinnati Yagoot locations 6 or 7 years ago with a friend and said she wanted to open one, but the corporation wasn’t wanting to franchise it at that time.

Fast forward a few years and an ownership change set up a desire to grow the company and they actually posted an advertisement looking for a franchisee in the Springboro area.  A close relationship with Yagoot and  Dorothy Lane Market helped them identify the area.  Jess’s friend, who she’d mentioned her desire to operate a shop years ago saw the advertisement and reached out and got the ball rolling.

Jess meet with Yagoot in June of last year, and liked the concept, as it was a simple concept with a limited menu.  She signed the lease for the space and then waited while the architect drew up the plans.  The wait was longer than expected and what had been an anticipated opening in Dec stretched to March.  But as Jess says, the timing actually works well, as they’ll now have just enough time to work out all the kinks before peak season arrives.

The shop will offer 6 flavors/season with Original and Strawberry being mainstays.  You then have the option to add toppings to customize your yogurt cup or smoothie.

Jess has joined the Chamber of Commerce and is looking forward to getting active in the community. She’ll be at the Hometown Expo “That Spring Thing” this Saturday at Springboro High School with a portable yogurt machine handing out samples.

You can also buy Yagoot yogurt in pints, hire them to cater your next event and eventually they hope to  make their product available in retirement communities or local hospitals.

Their official ribbon cutting will come later in the month and look for special offers and raffle prizes to be a part of the festivities.

The Rose Announce Sarah McLachlan Show

March 4, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Multi-platinum singer and songwriter Sarah McLachlan is headed to Huber Heights, OH to perform at Rose Music Center on Tuesday, July 30 for what is bound to be one of the most beautiful shows of the year. McLachlan will be accompanied by a live orchestra to perform hits from across her entire career.

With over 30 years in the recording industry, Sarah McLachlan is a multi-platinum singer and songwriter best known for her intimate vocals and relatable lyrics. Canadian-born, this Grammy and Juno Award winning artist has sold over 40 million albums throughout her career and was recently inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

McLachlan’s multi-platinum album Surfacing was released in 1997 and became her best-selling album to-date, reaching eight-times platinum in the US.  The album won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Building a Mystery” and another for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “Last Dance”. She won another Grammy in 1999 for “I Will Remember You”.

In addition to her personal artistic efforts, McLachlan founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female artists and brought over 2 million people together during its three-year run. Lilith Fair raised more than $7 million for women’s charities and helped launch the careers of numerous women performers. The festival was the most successful all-female music event and was the top-grossing touring festival at that time.

In 2002 McLachlan founded her non-profit organization, the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides top quality music instruction at no cost, in a safe and nurturing environment, for at-risk and underserved children and youth.  From an early age, music provided McLachlan with the tools she needed to navigate the challenges she faced in her life, so she recognizes how important it is for every child to have those same opportunities.

In recent years, she’s released the 2014 record Shine On and the 2016 Christmas album Wonderland, which scored a Traditional Pop Vocal Album Grammy nomination.

There’s a startlingly intimate quality to her voice and her music that’s virtually unmatched. Her live shows showcase not only her impressive vocal skill, but also her musical skills. Don’t miss this intimate evening of music.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 11:00am on Friday, March 8TH at Ticketmaster.com,RoseMusicCenter.com or charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000. Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

‘If/Then’ Review – Wright State University – One Woman, Two Paths

March 3, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Wright State University delivers a terrifically acted and vocally stunning local premiere of composer Tom Kitt and lyricist/librettist Brian Yorkey’s thought-provoking yet conceptually challenging 2014 pop/rock musical If/Then.
Newly divorced urban city planner Elizabeth (dynamic Rachel Mary Green) is back in New York City and it doesn’t take long before she’s in Madison Square Park catching up with her old bisexual friend Lucas (charmingly quirky Sam Maxwell), a community activist, and her new friend and neighbor Kate (delightfully sassy Kat Rodriguez), a kindergarten teacher. When the time comes for Elizabeth to choose her next step, to search for true love as Kate suggests or embrace her professional ambitions as Lucas suggests, the musical simultaneously explores both paths. The joy, surprise and heartbreak of marriage, career, family, and friendships are ultimately bolstered by the core themes of choice and fate.

(left to right) Kat Rodriguez (Kate), Rachel Mary Green (Elizabeth) and Sam Maxwell (Lucas) appear in Wright State University’s local premiere of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s musical “If/Then.” (Contributed photo)

Kitt and Yorkey, best known for their 2009 Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next to Normal, create a highly intricate, predominately sung-through framework requiring the utmost concentration, especially since Elizabeth is referred as Liz (with glasses) and Beth (no glasses). There’s also the peculiar issue of the Liz path being more emotionally engaging primarily due to her loving connection with military doctor Josh (cheerful Eric Thompson), whose gentle, hopeful, humble, and understanding presence heightens the action as important issues of parenthood and duty intertwine. Nevertheless, in spite of inherent confusion and an overstuffed Act 2, both paths, fluidly guided with character-driven potency within the intimacy of the Herbst Theatre by director Jamie Cordes, offer intriguing approaches to addressing the central question: what if?

The last time I saw If/Then, during Broadway previews, Idina Menzel took the stage with notecards having received new lyrics that very day, so I admire Green’s ability to tackle a very complex and demanding role with effortlessly confident and fierce aplomb, marvelously culminating in a life-affirming, full-belting rendition of Always Starting Over. Rodriguez, flirty and fun, is also a vocal powerhouse, specifically leading energetic ensemble number It’s a Sign in addition to joining Green, choreographer Megan Arseneau (pleasant as Anne, Kate’s underwritten girlfriend) and Emily Eliasen (Elena, Beth’s underwritten co-worker) for the Act 1 standout No More Wasted Time. Thompson, one of the finest pop tenors in the Miami Valley, absolutely captivates in his renditions of You Never Know and the beautifully tender Hey Kid. Maxwell, in one of his most vulnerable portrayals, is especially strong opposite amiable Hunter Minor as David, Lucas’ boyfriend, joining forces for a wonderfully heartfelt interpretation of the driving duet The Best Worst Mistake You Ever Made.  The praiseworthy cast includes Dylan Tacker (career-driven Stephen) and ensemble members Amanda Astorga, Emma Bratton, Marcus Butts, Jessica Greenwald, Andrea Gutierrez, Jared Levy, Aidan Lord, Dean McKenzie, Jake Siwek, Anna Stanford, Jeremy Weinstein, and D’Kaylah Whitley.
In addition to the aforementioned Arseneau (instilling organic joy for It’s a Sign and The Moment Explodes among others), Cordes’ first-rate artistic team includes set designer Carleigh Siebert (projections are a plus), lighting designer Gabe Reichert (great evocative work), sound designer James Dunlap (superbly accenting a pivotal airplane sequence), costume designer Victoria Gifford (supplying cool, contemporary attire), and musical director/keyboardist Melissa Yanchak (accompanied by guitarists Jay Brunner and Joel Greenberg).

Some theatergoers may find If/Then too complicated to fully enjoy, but it’s a worthwhile experience nonetheless thanks to particularly superb vocal talent.

If/Then concludes Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. in the Herbst Theatre of the Creative Arts Center at Wright State University, 3640 Col. Glenn Hwy., Dayton. Act 1: 80 minutes; Act 2: 60 minutes. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students. Call (937) 775-2500 or visit wright.edu/theatre-tickets.
