Honey Baked Ham For A Cause!

March 10, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

How many of you celebrate Easter with a Honey Baked Ham?  Did you know that your ham purchase can else make a difference in our community?

You don’t have to spend any extra money, just buy a Honey Baked gift card online and 20% of your purchase will be donated to the Junior League of Dayton (JLD). You can then use your gift card to make the purchase you normally would at Honey Baked Hams.  You’ve got until April 30th to buy gift cards that will benefit the JLD.

The Dayton chapter of Junior League held its first meeting on Oct. 31, 1919, at the Dayton Woman’s Club. Officially chartered in February 1920, it was admitted to membership in the Junior Leagues of America (now AJLI ) that same year, making Dayton the second League in Ohio.

From its original 10 founding members. the Junior League of Dayton has grown to 300 members today. Then, as now, their purpose is to foster interest among women in social, economic, educational, civic, and cultural conditions of the community and to make their volunteer service efficient and effective and it open to women 22 years of age or older.

Funds raised will help JLD with promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving their communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

In a Fractured World, ‘Violet’ seeks to Heal.

March 10, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

‘Violet’ is not a musical many Daytonians have seen, and Dare to Defy hopes to change that. ‘I know people will love this show if they just take the chance.’ Says Philip Drennen, who directs the show. ‘This is such a timely musical, and it hits on the themes we are facing today…but it does it in a real and relatable way.’

D2D’s ‘Violet’ sheds light on troubled times.

DFD’s ‘Violet’ sheds light on troubled times.

‘Violet,’ focuses on a young lady, filled with hope and expectation, making her way across country, hoping to heal her scar(s). ‘It’s truthful and it’s grounded. It has traditional musical components but the story is real world.’ Says Drennen.

The musical was the winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award in it’s first inception. Tony Winner, Sutton Foster, starred in the 2014 revival.

Although the show is well-loved, it is rarely produced.

‘ It’s a tough one to pull off. It has complex music, needs strong singing voices, and superior acting. You need the tri-fecta, and I think we have found it!’

‘Violet’ relies heavily on the cast’s vocals.

‘Violet’ relies heavily on the cast’s vocals.

Mackensie King, who co-directs adds, ‘It’s a love story, but it’s so true to life. ‘Violet’ is us!’
‘Violet’ tackles some heavy issues without getting stuck in the darkness.
‘Racism. Vietnam. Questioning Religion. Women trying to live up to some unattainable standard of beauty. It’s all in here. And, somehow, these themes are relevant all over again.’ Drennen pauses for a moment. ‘In our society, social media allows us to show only our best moments…this play shows us the reality of people. It’s not always pretty!’

‘Violet’ tackles all kinds of controversial issues, in an honest way.

‘Violet’ tackles all kinds of controversial issues, in an honest way.

The music in ‘Violet’ is quite a mix. Toe-tapping gospel, fun-loving blues, and heart wrenching ballads all combine for one incredible score. In its quieter moments, ‘Violet’ reaches within us, and audience tears have been known to fall.

‘These are the kind of musicals D2D set out to produce. They are unique. They deal with personal issues and make you think, make you feel.’ says Drennen. ‘And this cast….oh my goodness! Their energy, their drive and their desire to make a great show!! I know it’s cliche, but this is a family. Because the show is so emotionally driven, we have had to be vulnerable at times. Everyone takes care of each other, and the positive energy has been astounding.’

Judy Mansky, musical director, added, ‘You know the underlying story they are telling, and this cast does it with honesty, and heart! It’s a wow!’

‘Violet’ is redemptive, and quite poignant.

Rob Lowe Brings Hit One Man Show To Dayton

March 8, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Victoria Theatre Association presents Dayton native Rob Lowe’s one man show, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: LIVE! at the Schuster Center on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 4 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 11 at the Ticket Center Stage Box Office, by calling 937-228-3630, (toll-free) 888-228-3630 or online at ticketcenterstage.com.

Inspired by the success of his two The New York Times best-selling memoirs, Stories I Only Tell My Friends and Love Life, Rob has created an all-new, peek behind the curtain at Hollywood, fame, fatherhood, marriage, and a life lived at the forefront of culture for four decades.  Broadway World calls Lowe, “As personable and charismatic of a presence onstage as he is onscreen.”

From the Brat Pack to “The West Wing” to “Parks and Rec” and beyond, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: LIVE! is packed with witty fun and one-of-a-kind insights spanning an iconic career. Broadway World raves “The humor is first class, with the jokes and funny anecdotes keeping the audience in stitches for most of the night.” In addition to Rob’s storytelling, the show will include a Q&A and plenty of insider film clips and photos.

“This isn’t a regurgitation of the books, because that wouldn’t be very much fun,” says Lowe. “This is very much its own beast, but it does have some of the same feel of the books.”

Lowe released his memoir, Stories I Only Tell my Friends in 2011. The book was an instant hit, spending consecutive weeks in the top four of The New York Times best sellers and making it onto GQ’s “Best of 2011” book list. Lowe’s second book, Love Life was published in 2014 and landed a spot on The New York Times best-seller list.

“I decided to put what would be the third book into a show where I could go out directly to an audience and share and have an exchange with them directly,” he says. “Frankly, I love meeting people, being out in front of them, hearing their comments. It’s really fun,” says Lowe.

Lowe will perform at the historic Victoria Theatre on Sunday, June 2 at 4 p.m. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 11 at 10 a.m. and are available at the Ticket Center Stage Box Office, located in the Wintergarden of The Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, or by calling 937-228-3630, (toll-free) 888-228-3630 or online at ticketcenterstage.com.

Ohio Business Women Celebrate International Women’s Day with a Focus on Feminine Hygiene

March 8, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Local women-owned businesses are rallying around four local teens and their dreams to end period poverty in Dayton. Speakeasy Yoga is partnering with Femme Aid Collaborative, a non-profit dedicated to ending period poverty in Dayton, to collect period products and donations at both of its downtown studios.

Femme Aid Collaborative, founded in 2018 by local high school students Ryann Mescher, Dana Clark, Zoe Waller and Claire Parker, hopes to put 100,000 period products into the community over the course of 2019 by collecting products and distributing them to local nonprofits such as PATH, Linda Vista, and Daybreak. Speakeasy Yoga has partnered with the collaborative, donating $1,000 from its New Year’s Day class and launching an ongoing collection effort at the 510 East 3rd Street and 204 Wayne Avenue studios. Speakeasy will also rotate Femme Aid Collaborative in as one of the recipients of its monthly community class proceeds.

Tori Reynolds, co-owner of Speakeasy Yoga, has seen women in downtown Dayton struggling to support their feminine hygiene needs first-hand.

“Access to proper feminine hygiene products should be a right, not a luxury” said Reynolds. “Women should continue to be celebrated for all that we’re capable of and what we’re given naturally all year round. I’m excited to have the opportunity to partner with young, empowered women to do that.”

Heart Mercantile and Luna Gifts & Botanicals are also partnering to support the Femme Aid Collaborative with donation boxes at each of their downtown stores.

“It’s amazing to see that these fellow women have our back.” said Ryann Mescher of Femme Aid Collaborative. “It’s our community, so it feels like all of our problem to solve.”

In addition to collecting and distributing 100,000 period products in 2019, Femme Aid Collaborative aims to be the centralized collection agency for feminine hygiene products in Montgomery County. Nonprofits in need of feminine hygiene products can apply for support at femmeaid.com.

Speakeasy will launch its collection efforts at its 510 East 3rd Street and 204 Wayne Avenue studios on Friday, March 8 in conjunction with International Women’s Day. The studio opens twenty minutes prior to each class and a schedule can be found at speakeasydayton.com.

‘Around the World in 80 Days’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Gleeful Globetrotting

March 6, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Forget CBS. The amazing race you need to be concerned about has to do with the Human Race Theatre Company’s outstanding production of Jules Verne’s classic comedy Around the World in 80 Days, a dandy display of engaging storytelling and splendid acting continuing through March 17 at the Loft Theatre.

(left to right) Jared Joplin, Patrick Earl Phillips, Jake Lockwood, Darlene Spencer, and Lovlee Carroll appear in the Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Mark Brown’s adaptation of Jules Verne’s comedy “Around the World in 80 Days,” continuing through March 17 at the Loft Theatre. (Photo by Immobulous)

Under the delightfully imaginative, fluidly comedic direction of Joe Deer, Mark Brown’s adaptation, set in Victorian England circa 1872, is a breezy, enthusiastic adventure spanning Calcutta, Hong Kong, New York City and points in between complete with a typhoon, a runaway train and an elephant. Granted, the iconic hot air balloon featured in producer Mike Todd’s 1956 Academy Award-winning Best Picture isn’t included in Verne’s novel, and is therefore not in the show, but there’s a great deal to enjoy overall as chasing time becomes imperative for Mr. Phileas Fogg. After all, Fogg, portrayed with utmost sophistication and upright seriousness by Jared Joplin, risks his fortune and reputation on his titular wager, ultimately proving that anyone, whether captain or colonel, can be of use if the price is right.

As Joplin leads the way embodying the prickly and eccentric yet generous Fogg, bravely adhering to the notion that “the unforeseen does not exist,” 30 other characters leap forth with infectious glee by a group of four diverse and versatile actors. The energetic, nimble Patrick Earl Phillips displays impressive physicality as the excitedly quirky Passepartout, Fogg’s devoted, impressionable valet. In addition to portraying a beautiful Parsee princess rescued from a sacrificial ritual, Lovelee Carroll, strikingly dressed by costumer Cat Schmeal-Swope, rightfully receives applause near the outset as a chipper newsboy spiritedly detailing Fogg’s itinerary accented by a Family Feud-esque visual. Darlene Spencer brings cool authoritative determination and believably perturbed agitation to her key portrayal of villainous Detective Fix, firmly believing Fogg is a bank robber who must be stopped at all costs. Jake Lockwood, one of the finest improv actors in the region, steals the show with delicious comic timing interpreting a whopping 17 characters including a flirtatious consul and a kooky judge. Lockwood is so good that I’m waiting for someone to write him a one-man play in which he portrays all of the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders. As of this writing, the official list has grown to 12. I’m eager to see what he would do with Sanders, Warren, Harris, Castro, Klobuchar, and Booker. Who needs the Capitol Steps when you have Lockwood?

In addition to essentially creating the world of the show with four chairs, four large trunks and an assortment of luggage along with Heather Powell’s nifty properties, Deer instills a cohesive chemistry among the cast. I particularly enjoyed Phillips and Spencer encircling each other in mystery and fear when Passepartout finally catches on to Detective Fix’s sly plans. Equally noteworthy are Dick Block’s handsome set complete with a huge clock as the stage’s centerpiece, John Rensel’s evocative lighting, John Riechers’ wonderfully eye-catching projection design, and Jay Brunner’s expert sound design featuring tunes by Gilbert and Sullivan which set the proper mood, tone and period.
You have until March 17 to catch this excellent adventure. Don’t miss it!

Around the World in 80 Days continues through March 17 at the Loft Theatre, 126 N. Main St, Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, and 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Act One: 85 minutes; Act Two: 50 minutes. Cost: $14-$52. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. Student tickets are available at 50 percent off regular adult prices and a student ID must be presented when picking up tickets at the box office. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit ticketcenterstage.com

Artist of the Week: Heather Jones

March 6, 2019 By Bill Franz

Heather Jones of Heather Jones Studio working in her Front Street Studio. Front Street is in Dayton’s Springfield neighborhood.

As she worked, Heather told me how her current body of work came about. “I wrote a book called Quilt Local. I really like how the book turned out, but by late 2014 when the book was finished, I was burned out on quilting. I had to do something else for a while.”

“I tried painting, but didn’t find it satisfying. So I started doing these sewn works which are hung on the wall like a painting. They’ve been well received, both in the galleries that show my work and in various exhibitions.”

“I start with strips of cloth that I stick on the flannel wall. When I’m happy with how two of the pieces look side by side I iron them and sew them together. Then I place them back on the flannel wall and try to decide which piece of cloth should be added next. When I’m done sewing I put the finished cloth piece onto a structure so it can be hung. As I stretch the cloth some of lines that had looked straight become slightly curved.”

This is a busy month for Heather. She’s in three exhibitions. One is in Cincinnati and has an opening Thursday night from 6 to 9 pm at 1628 LTD (11 Garfield Place). It’s called “Just to be alive – an exhibition of the contemporary female artist.” Twenty artists are included in the show, including Mychaelyn Michalec, Artist.

It was obvious that Heather didn’t mind being photographed as she worked. When I mentioned that she explained that she’s done quite a few workshops and interviews on TV. So I googled her and found a great interview on Youtube on The Quilt Show. The interview referred to Heather as a modern quilter, teacher, author, and Martha Stewart American Made finalist. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KMXUkseqkI

Scythian warms up the Celtic Crowd!

March 5, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

For all those missing Celtic Festival, there’s a fantastic event happening this weekend that’s just for you! One of the beloved annual headliners, Scythian, is making a winter stop in Dayton, to warm up our hearts and souls, and get us in the mood for St Patrick’s Day!

Scythian is crowd pleaser for many reasons, primarily because they are so energetic, and get people literally bouncing on their feet! The other reason is their undeniable talent, and clever interplay between musicians. If you’ve never seen them perform, this is the perfect show to see and hear them up close!

The upcoming March 8th performance is extra special for a couple of reasons. First off, the band is performing at one of Dayton’s newest venues, The Brightside Music & Event Venue. Dayton has been in need of a 400-600 person indoor room where national acts can perform during the colder months especially. Secondly, Scythian is joined by The Hussey Brothers (Indiana) & our beloved Celtic Academy of Irish Dance for this show!

When I spoke with this band about their upcoming show in Dayton, they said: “For every band that tours, there’s always a few cities that have a special place in their heart: places that have opened their doors, their hearts to them and given them the unconditional support to take risks and grow as musicians. For us Dayton is such a place and we can honestly say it feels like a home away from home – an oasis. During this 3,500 mile St. Patrick’s Day tour we’ve all been keeping our eye on March 8th. We’re excited to come home and are looking forward to introducing our Dayton family to the Hussey Brothers an brand new band on the Americana scene that will be turning heads this coming year. So be sure to come out early to hear these Indiana boys play and come ready for a great night of musical entertainment!”

The Hussey Brothers perform with Scythian at the Brightside Music & Event Center on Friday March 8, 2019. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO.

Stray Cats Strut into Huber Heights This August

March 5, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

THE STRAY CATS, the band that put Rockabilly music back on the record charts in the early ’80s, are celebrating their 40th anniversary with a new tour and album. The new album, titled 40, marks their first new music in 26 years and is set for release on May 24 via Surfdog Records (CD, vinyl, digital). The 40th Anniversary Tour will make a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Wednesday, August 14th.

The Stray Cats scored several big hits on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to a striking visual 1950’s style brought “up to date” with exaggerated pompadours and colorful tattoos and as well as genuine musical chops that evoked the best players of rockabilly’s original heyday.

Formed by guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bass player Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, NY, in 1979, the trio shared a love for Rockabilly music. After banging around New York for a few months, in the summer of 1980, and seeing a pompadoured kid on the cover of UK magazine NME, they hopped a plane to London where a rockabilly revival movement was just beginning to emerge.

Their massive hits and videos include “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut” “(She’s) Sexy + 17,” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way.”

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 11:00am on Friday, March 8TH at Ticketmaster.com, RoseMusicCenter.com or charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000. Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.
