March 15, 2019 By Angie Hoschouer Leave a Comment

A nationally recognized writer on music, Betty began her career at the age of 15 when she wrote freelance music reviews for the former Dayton Journal newspaper. During her 53 years at the Dayton Daily News, she held the positions of women’s page editor, art critic and arts editor.
During World War II, she held brief stints in nearly every editorial post at the paper and in the 1950s, she hosted her own television show on WHIO-TV. It was in 1962 that Betty created the annual Ten Top Women Awards program that honors women who have made significant community achievements. To date, more than 550 women have the the honor as a Ten Top Women Awards recipient.
Betty Dietz married William J. Krebs who was a nationally known choral conductor and founder of the Dayton Philharmonic Chorus.

Plans for New Dog Park Get Tails a’Wagging!

March 14, 2019 By Joshua Stucky

As Dayton continues its incredible resurgence, it’s apparent no dog will be left behind. A new dog park, more on the multi-use front, is coming to Steve Whalen Boulevard and Wyoming Street. 21,000 sq. feet await your mutt in this expanse. ‘Right now it’s one big space that we are using to design this great neighborhood amenity.’ says Mike Schommer, Walnut Hills Neighborhood President.

‘With Wagtown Trails, who will incorporate three trail heads in the park, we have room for a great addition to the area.’

The plan started in 2017, when Schommer met with Mayor Whaley and pitched the idea. ‘We spoke about creating a healthy community, and realized we had bike paths, and we weren’t living in a food desert. What we didn’t have was a multi-use park area, especially one for the pets.’

Beth Miller, who has put Dayton on the map when it comes to dog-friendly, adds, ‘What has been evolving in our community is the use of parks for our canine friends. When this project moves forward (Find more info here) it will become part of the bigger picture in Dayton. That vision includes the use of sponsors, artists and community members as part of what’s available in our area for pet owners and lovers. We have a QR system now that can be used to enlighten folks on what’s available today, and updates for the future.’

It takes a village for sure, in these types of endeavors. ‘There is no way a neighborhood can do this alone. Linden Heights neighborhood got on-board which propelled the project forward. When you get the City, the neighborhoods and the grassroots people invested, it makes a big difference.’ says Schommer.
Schommer is a Get-It-Done leader. Along with his team at Walnut Hills, and hand-in-hand with Linden Heights, they see momentum for their future projects.

‘This model, which is based on best practices, will be an easy-to-repeat concept for other neighborhoods looking to improve their community’s health and well-being. I owe a lot to Aaron Glett, Walnut Hills Secretary; Robert Harrison from Community Health, and Mary Loper & Carl Leifbacher of Linden Heights. This was a community effort for sure,’ says Schomer!

The park is unique for a Dayton area dog park as it has large, mature trees, is easily visible and can accommodate a large number of pets. The park, which is recognized by the City of Dayton, will actually have a trail lead that takes dog-parents to Cleveland Park, which also has a wooded space and beautiful vistas.

‘It really comes down to time and energy. Walnut Hills and Linden Heights are opening an opportunity for the entire Dayton Community. Seeing the revitalization of these parks for our animal friends is quite inspiring.’ Says Miller.

And Stay tuned, canine lovers. There is more in Dayton’s future for the dog lover, as Wagtown continues to grow in the city.

Del Mar Encore Fellows Search for New Projects To Help

March 14, 2019 By Noreen Wilhelm

Linda Mercuri Fischbach

Linda Mercuri Fischbach spent 20 years running the nonprofit Womanline Counseling Center and another 13 as clinical director of Family Service Association. She’s an active community volunteer – think Italian Festival or Goodwill’s Miracle Clubhouse. She has four kids, a husband and 11 grandchildren. But somehow, retirement wasn’t really in the cards.

She’s spent the last two years with The Dayton Foundation as a Del Mar Encore Fellow, tackling significant community problems. Her current assignment is with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), exploring how our community addresses issues of diversity and inclusion.

Linda is one of five Encore Fellows assigned to area nonprofits as part of an initiative aimed at using older adults to provide expert resources to nonprofits and to change the community conversation around aging along the way. The program, The Dayton Foundation Del Mar Encore Fellows Initiative, is built on the understanding that retired professionals have a lot of wisdom and experience that can continue to benefit the Dayton Region.

The Dayton Foundation is now seeking new Host Organizations for three new Encore Fellows, older adults who have finished their primary careers but are still interested in giving back to the community. They are employed by The Dayton Foundation but placed with community groups to work on major projects for a minimum of one year, and up to three.

The Encore Fellows work about 25 hours a week and their role has three aspects. The first is the Host’s initiative – help solve a community problem. The second is to engage older adults as Encore volunteers, identifying equally skilled folks who don’t want the year-long commitment of the Fellow’s role, but are interested in making a meaningful contribution to our community. The last is to change the conversation around aging, to help our community recognize that we can more effectively solve problems if we thoughtfully employ the experience and wisdom of older adults.

Frieda R. Bennett

Frieda R. Bennett is another Encore Fellow who has a hard time staying retired. After 30 years at Sinclair Community College, where she was a professor, dean of the business technologies division, and served as assistant to former President Ned Sifferlen, she retired, only to start teaching again at Wright State University. Five years later, she retired again. Sort of.  She began her new role in August as an Encore Fellow with St. Mary Development Corp., trying to figure out how technology can be used to help low income senior residents have better access to health care.

Sherrè Collier

Sherrè Collier left a 33-year career at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 2017 and a week later began her new role as a Del Mar Encore Fellow with the Brunner Literacy Center  in Trotwood. (She hasn’t even tried retirement!) At Brunner, Sherrè and the staff are working to address the widespread challenges of adult illiteracy and low literacy by helping to recruit and train volunteer tutors, and document the literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) resources in our community.

Vel Hux

Vel Hux was a volunteer leader of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) who had worked in communications for corporations, nonprofits and with her own business, before she joined Learn to Earn Dayton as a Del Mar Encore Fellow. Vel coordinates the Summer and After School Collaborative, which helps providers offer high quality programming and document their impact on children in our community.

Kaye Manson Jeter

After multiple careers in the law and education, including serving as general counsel to the Tennessee Department of Education, Kaye Manson Jeter actually did retire as Dean of the Central State University-Dayton Campus in 2013. But the lure of an interesting Del Mar Encore Fellowship pulled her back into the workforce. In August, Kaye began working with the Dayton Metro Library, reviewing their nascent Homework Help programs and making plans to expand the program into more branches across their service area.

Each of these Encore Fellows has brought a wealth of experience to their Host Organizations and an even broader view of the needs and gaps in our community. If you think your organization has a project that could benefit from the contributions of a highly skilled, retired professional, check out our Request for Proposals. And if you still have questions, give me a call.

Vectren Dayton Air Show lands two “BIG” Air Force Demonstrations

March 14, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

C-17 Globemaster III Flight Demonstration

The United States Air Force has confirmed it will add a C-17 Globemaster III and KC-135 Stratotanker flight demonstration to the 2019 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger lineup. The 45th annual show will be held on June 22nd and 23rd at the Dayton International Airport. The aircraft will perform separately and together, a first for the Dayton premier summer event.

The massive Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is the newest and one of the largest aircrafts in the Air Force inventory. Weighing in at a maximum takeoff weight of 585,000 pounds and flying as fast as 590 mph the 200-foot-long C-17 will show off its impressive aerial capability. The C-17’s primary mission is to transport equipment, supplies and troops around the world. Dayton’s Wright-Patterson AFB is the home base for the 445th Airlift Wing that flies C-17’s. The aircraft last performed an aerial demonstration at Dayton in 2010.

The KC-135 Stratotanker is the core aerial refueling aircraft for the United States Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 60 years. This large aerial tanker provides the U.S. Air Force capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach. It provides aerial refueling support to all Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps aircraft. The KC-135 weighs 322,500 pounds. The heavy refueler flies at a speed of 530 mph. The KC-135 has never performed an aerial demonstration at Dayton.

KC-135 Stratotanker Flight Demonstration

The demo aircraft and crews will be traveling to Dayton from the 97th Air Mobility Wing, Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The C-17 and KC-135 will also both be on display so spectators will have an opportunity to tour them and talk with the flight crews. They promise to be a big hit with air show fans.

“We are pleased to announce these two big additions to the 2019 show lineup” stated Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the USATS Board of Trustees. “The C-17 is a hometown aircraft. To see it fly at the show alongside the KC-135 will be awesome.” he added.

The Air Force C-17 and KC-135 will join a host of other top attractions previously announced including the world-renowned U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights, British Sea Harrier, GEICO Skytypers, Jacquie B Aerobatics, Team Oracle, Shockwave Jet Truck and Skip Stewart Aerobatics. Air show officials plan to announce other aircraft that will fly and appear on static display during the 2019 feature show in the months ahead.

Big Head Todd and The Monsters and Toad The Wet Sprocket Coming to Town!

March 13, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Big Head Todd and The Monsters and Toad The Wet Sprocket have announced plans for their 2019 Summer Tour. The co-headline run will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Wednesday, June 12th.

ABOUT BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS

Big Head Todd and the Monsters are not that big on anniversaries, so there won’t be any big hoopla over the fact that the band is officially crossing the three-decade mark this year. Thirty years would seem like something to commemorate, especially with the same core lineup, an achievement few other name-brand bands can boast of. Yet right now they’re less about celebrating stability than volatility, in the form of their eleventh studio album, New World Arisin’, which makes good on its forward-facing title with what might be the brashest rock and roll of their career. The old world can’t rest on any laurels, and neither will they.

If there’s a dominant musical motif to New World Arisin’, it’s “straight-up rock-pop,” says Mohr. That contemporary approach might come as a slight surprise to hardcore fans that saw the Monsters take a seriously rootsy turn or two in the last 10 years. The band embarked on a side project, dubbed Big Head Blues Club, that saw them paying homage to Robert Johnson and bringing in venerable guest collaborators like Charlie Musselwhite and the late B.B. King. The heavy blues influence that dominated their alter-ego band carried over some into the last actual Big Head Todd and the Monsters album, 2014’s Black Beehive. That element isn’t altogether missing in New World Arisin’. But this time the blues take a definite back seat to the unapologetically mainstream instincts that had Big Head Todd going platinum in the mid-’90s with the album Sister Sweetly, which spawned the rock radio hits “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Bittersweet,” and “Circle.”

The history of the group actually stretches farther back from the 1987 point at which they took their name. The core members came together at such an early age that it’s hard to know exactly how many candles to put on their collective cake. They began playing original music in earnest in a nascent Colorado music scene that then consisted almost entirely of cover bands. A debut album, Another Mayberry, arrived in 1989, though it would be another four years before Sister Sweetly made them a national phenomenon. The only personnel change in these three decades has been the addition of a fourth member, putative “new guy” Jeremy Lawton, in 2004.

While they enjoy a robust fan base around the country, their success is outsized in Colorado, where they’re practically the unofficial state band. That’s evident in their ability to sell out Red Rocks, the most revered amphitheater in the nation, where they’ve headlined 19 times.

What’s clear is that Big Head Todd is one multi-headed rock monster, easily traversing the most accessible hooks and the heaviest grooves. It’s not surprising that they would appeal to any audience or sub-audience that values durability over flavors of the moment.

ABOUT TOAD THE WET SPROCKET

Celebrating 30 years as a band, Toad the Wet Sprocket is still making music and touring with the same spirit of unwavering independence that started it all over three decades ago. 2019 marks two important milestones for Toad. One is the 25th Anniversary of their Platinum albumDulcinea, originally released in 1994, which featured the hits “Fall Down” and “Somethings Always Wrong”. The second is the 30th Anniversary of the band’s very first album Bread & Circus, which was re-released commercially in 1989.

The band is thankful for the continued help and enthusiastic support of their fans, which helped spur the release of All You Want and also serves as inspiration for the band to tour and play live. They also continue to support their most recent releases, New Constellation (2013) and The Architect of Ruin EP (2015). Toad the Wet Sprocket share in the kind of musical chemistry that can only come from meeting in high school and writing, recording and touring on albums over the course time. After Bread & Circus, they followed with Pale in 1990, fear in ’91, Dulcinea in 1994, and Coil in 1997, as well as some compilations along the way. While most will still feel the comforting familiarity of the Billboard-charting hits, “Walk on the Ocean”, “All I Want”, “Something’s Always Wrong”, and “Fall Down”, fans will also be well familiar with tracks with lyrics that resonate for so many life milestones like “The Moment”, “I Will Not Take These Things for Granted” and so many more.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 11am on Friday, March 15th at Ticketmaster.com, RoseMusicCenter.com. Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Los Lobos and The Mavericks Coming To The Rose

March 12, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Genre-defying groups Los Lobos and The Mavericks are teaming up for a not-to-be-missed co-headline showat Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH on Tuesday, July 23rd.

Louie Perez, the “poet laureate” and primary wordsmith of Los Lobos, once called their powerhouse mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican music “the soundtrack of the barrio.” Three decades, multiple Grammys, the global success of “La Bamba”, and thousands of rollicking performances across the globe later, Los Lobos is surviving quite well — and still jamming with the same raw intensity as they had when they began in that garage in 1973.

A rare example of longevity in a volatile music world that stresses style over substance, Los Lobos’ lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when Steve Berlin joined original members Louie Pérez, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano, each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.

“This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together for 30+ years to see how far it can take them,” wroteRolling Stone, and indeed, Los Lobos is a band that continually reboots itself and expands its scope with each passing year, while never losing sight of where they came from. Through sheer camaraderie and respect for one another’s musicality, they’ve continued to explore who Los Lobos is and what they have to offer, without succumbing to the burnout that plagues so many other bands that stick it out for any considerable length of time. Their influence is vast, yet they remain humble, centered and dedicated to their craft. Each new recording they make moves Los Lobos into another new dimension while simultaneously sounding like no one else in the world but Los Lobos. As All About Jazz raved, “The genius of Los Lobos resides in their innate ability to find the redemptive power of music, no matter the style they choose to play.”

More than three decades have passed since Los Lobos released their debut album, Just Another Band from East L.A.. Since then, they’ve repeatedly disproven that title—Los Lobos isn’t “just another” anything, but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots.

As Entertainment Weekly noted in 2017, “‘What kind of music do The Mavericks record?’ is a question with no real answer. On the one hand, the Miami-bred outfit records bits of everything: Elvis Presley-esque rock, Roy Orbison-style balladry, Latin-fusion party tunes, throwback country, irresistible pop. On the other hand, a vocabulary for their style remains out of reach.”

The band has resolutely defied pigeonholing since their founding in 1989; they played their earliest dates in Florida’s alternative rock clubs, where their on-stage contemporaries included another new act on the scene, Marilyn Manson.

The Mavericks’ eclectic sound – fronted by a Cuban-American vocalist and songwriter who drew strongly on his Latin/Caribbean roots and flexing a panoply of influences drawn from rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, pop balladry, blues, R&B, and jazz — ultimately fit most comfortably in a country pocket. The Mavericks’ unique, swaggering fusion of American and Latin styles and sounds garnered praise from both music critics and their industry peers.

With their 30th anniversary looming on the horizon in 2019, The Mavericks abide as an American musical treasure, with an all-encompassing sound that’s as deep, rousing, and entertaining as it is stubbornly impossible to pin down.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 11am on Friday, March 15th at Ticketmaster.com,RoseMusicCenter.com. Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Tour de Donut

March 11, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

For its third year in Troy, the Tour de Donut ride will once again start and end around the square of historic downtown Troy on Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Last year’s event in Troy brought in 2700 riders, the largest participation number to date. Being Ohio’s largest one-day bicycle event, 2018 cyclists traveled to the Tour de Donut from 28 states and Canada.

For 2019, the Tour de Donut once again welcomes Be The Match as their official charity partner. For the runners/walkers out there, Be The Match invites you to participate in the Buckeye Donut Dash. This 5k will begin in downtown Troy at 8:30am on Saturday, August 24, 2019 running simultaneously with the Tour de Donut. The Buckeye Donut Dash raises funds to help patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. With your support in fundraising, you help more patients afford transplants, add potential marrow donors to the Be The Match Registry and make more life-saving research possible.

The Tour de Donut is a unique bicycle event in which participants’ ability to eat donuts is just as important as their ability to ride their bicycle.  During this timed bicycle event, riders visit donut stops along the course.  For each donut the rider will eat (and keeps down), five minutes will be deducted from their ride time.  The Glazer, a special donut stop, will return by popular demand.  Each donut eaten at this stop is worth a ten minute deduction in ride time.  A competition will be held between area donut shops during the Troy Strawberry Festival in June to choose the coveted special glazer donut.

Traditionally there have been three distances offered for the Tour de Donut, 16, 32, & 64 miles, but in 2019, an additional distance will be introduced. A 10-mile ride on the bike path will be offered for those beginners or young riders who want to participate, but do not feel comfortable riding on the road with other riders due to car traffic.

The Donut Mini will return with one donut stop. The Full will offer two donut stops.  And, for the experienced cyclist, the Double D Challenge will have three donut stops. New this year, the winner of each category for each ride will receive a Championship Jersey compliments of Kettering Health Network.

A free children’s bike ride will take place at 8 a.m. on N. Market Street.  Anyone interested can register the day of the event at The Rec parking lot in downtown Troy. All children participating will receive a free T-shirt, finisher medal and all the donuts and milk they care to eat courtesy of Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio.

Due to packet pickup on Friday, August 24th, an evening event has been designed to welcome riders, runners and residents to this beautiful area.  This event, “Donut Jam”, will highlight bands, a donut eating contest, beer and food trucks, many children’s activities and the popular shops and restaurants in downtown Troy.

Saturday’s festivities will begin early with registration starting at 5:30 am.  Not to worry, breakfast foods will be available throughout downtown and at food trucks.  Everyone will be gearing up for the 8:30 am start of both the Tour de Donut and the Buckeye Donut Dash.  More musical entertainment and children’s activities, along with a visit by the Columbus Zoo, will be a delightful way to spend the morning.

Online registration is open for both  Cyclists  and runners/walkers.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas including Tour de Donut set-up, the children’s activities area and beer pouring from 11am – 11pm on Friday, August 23 and from 8am – 2pm on Saturday, August 24. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Miami County Visitors Bureau at 937-339-1044.

Spend An Evening With Foreigner

March 11, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Universally hailed as one of the world’s most popular rock acts with 10 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Top 30 hits, and worldwide album sales exceeding 75 million, FOREIGNER brings their legendary show to Huber Heights, OH to perform at Rose Music Center on Monday, August 12th.

Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold as Ice,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” and the worldwide #1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts forty years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard “Top 200 Albums” chart success.  FOREIGNER also features strongly in every category in Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time” listing.  Catalog sales often eclipse those of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Aerosmith, and most of their Classic Rock peers.  (Source: Nielsen SoundScan week ending 8/3/17). FOREIGNER’s catalog sales were recently celebrated in Business Insider as hitting the Top 40 among the Best Selling Music Artists of All Time ahead of Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, and Bon Jovi.

Throughout this tour, FOREIGNER will continue their long-standing partnership with The GRAMMY Museum, by which local school choirs are invited to join the band on stage in almost every market they play. Through this program over the past several years, the band has raised well into the six figures for music in school programs and given thousands of students a life-changing experience to rock on stage with one of the most well-known bands of all time.

The band recently released a celebratory 40th anniversary album that features 40 tracks tracing their distinguished career. Entitled40, the album is a comprehensive compilation of original hits and several tracks from the current lineup, with Kelly Hansen on vocals. All tracks were recorded between 1977 and 2017. The current line-up is Mick Jones (lead guitar), Kelly Hansen (lead vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass, vocals), Tom Gimbel (rhythm guitar, saxophone, vocals), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar), and Chris Frazier (drums).
