McCoy on Movies: Aladdin
Aladdin live-action remake features a lot of Will Smith, but not much else
WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:
DIRECTOR(S): Guy Ritchie
What he doesn’t anticipate, however, is Jafar (Marwan Kenzari). The power hungry head consultant to the Sultan, Jafar convinces Aladdin to unwittingly help him out in a nefarious plot that will help him rise to power. But his plan doesn’t go as well, planned, leaving Aladdin in possession of a lamp that, once rubbed, unleashes a powerful Genie (Will Smith) that grants him three wishes that will forever change his life.
But, as Aladdin is soon to find out, the old expression “Be careful what you wish for” is about to ring truer to him than it ever has before …
THE REVIEW: “The Fresh Prince of Agrabah …”It’s rare that you can sum up a movie in one sentence, but if you were looking to tell a friend what to make of the 2019 live action version of Aladdin – a made-for-TV quality movie which is essentially ALL about Will Smith save for the last 20 minutes – the previous one would be it. For Aladdin lacks any of the spirit of the animated original for the first of its 2 hours and change run time, feeling more like a watered down (from special effects to performances) money grab than attempt at making something substantial.
Smith fans will love or, depending on if they will find themselves saddened he and Nasim Pedrad – who is very entertaining as Princess Jasmine’s no. 1 handmaiden – are the only things fairly entertaining about the film, loathe – Aladdin as all of his natural charms come shining through. Well, they shine as much as they can in a film where the lead actor feels a bit, there’s no nice way to say it, presented in a fashion to make him acceptable to ALL audiences (the whitewashing controversy surrounding Scott was covered last year by media outlets). Then again, the entire production feels like some executive’s whole pitch was “Bigger! Louder! Will Smith!” and when someone said “What about gripping, nuanced performances with eye-popping visuals?” they were met with a stronger “WILL SMITH!” retort. Smith is the best and worst thing about the movie as you’ll either find him the most engaging thing about it or the most irritating when he becomes bigger than everything – literally and figuratively – around him.
Sadly, the live-action version of Aladdin just doesn’t feel special at all unless you are a die-hard Will Smith fan because the aforementioned effects which only seem to be saved for Smith’s musical numbers, the charisma (which is reserved for Smith and Pedrad) or how Kenzari’s turn as Jafar is as threatening as Massoud’s is underwhelming. Putting Smith in a cast with so many underwhelming performers almost turns the film into a live-action Shrek … With WAY too much focus on Donkey. Be it Massoud’s perfectly coiffed hair and Scott’s “I have a heart of gold; can’t anyone see how much I love everyone?!” routine, Aladdin just feels to be too much of too little to make you buy in as much as you need to enjoy it in full.
The animated version of a movie shouldn’t seem to have more heart and pep than the live-action version, but this – like last year’s “Let’s make another Grinch movie because …. Well … We can!” just feels unnecessary, loud, a bit boorish and save for three musical numbers, overdone to the point of it turning into a meal at Buca Di Beppo that’s intended to serve 3-4 …. But ends up being devoured by one. It’s still filling … But when it causes a stomach ache later, you might be inclined to think if you really needed to stuff yourself with it for the sake of having it available. You can tell everyone tried really hard to make a movie, but you can tell that they are trying – and that makes the ride on this carpet feel far less magical than director Guy Ritchie and company surely hoped it would be.
And that’s a shame – because Aladdin is likely to make you think where is poor Uncle Phil when you need him more than anything else.

Plea For Help, Turns to Dream Come True
**** UPDATE to OUR PREVIOUS ARTICLE “HAMBURGER WAGON OWNER’S PLEA FOR HELP” ****
In a world of sad news, this story will restore your faith of people, and shows how special people are in the Miami Valley. As you may recall we had been following the story of HAMBURGER WAGON OWNER JACK SPERRY. He was fighting a lifelong illness, of all things called “Berger’s” disease. The progression of this syndrome, leaves the person with a gradual decline in kidney function over a 15 year period, eventually resulting in renal failure.
TIME OF NEED
It was early 2019, Jack had run out of time, he had just turned 56 years old and his kidney function was bordering on 15%. The doctors told him he was weeks away from dialysis, and he needed a new kidney.
Along with our readers, many news and social outlets reached out to the community. The response was overwhelming. There were so many requests for donors, that the University of Cincinnati hospital had to put a pause on processing any more matches for Jack.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS?
As the first batch of tests came through, he had a match. But they had to do more tests to make sure the match was exact. It was. Even more incredible, is that match was his fiancee Alex Frazier. Against all reasonable odds, it was fate that she would be his hero. Jacks chances were looking better.
Surgery was scheduled for Monday May 20th at University of Cincinnati. The plan was to take one of Alex’s regular functioning kidneys and insert it into Jacks abdomen and connect it to his existing 2 kidneys. Alex would be left with one kidney, which is strong enough that she could function normally with it.
As this past weekend went by, Jack visited with friends and relaxed. He talked with The Food Adventures Crew and rubbed it in that he had landed a Rock N Green Tomato Festival sponsor just hours before surgery. “Im in renal failure and still kicking butt” he joked.
SURGERY DAY
Surgery was performed Monday May 20th, in the morning. Then, the first word came through Monday afternoon, a friend wrote on Facebook. “Alex and Jack are out of surgery, Alex is recovering well and Jack’s new kidney is performing wonderfully.” This was the first news, and it was tremendous news.
Today (Tuesday May 21st) we received some joking texts from Jack and an eventual phone call. Jack is sore as they have reduced his pain meds and he has gotten out of bed for the first time. Joking about his high school football days at Centerville, he said “I should be back in the locker room in a few days, but I will have some stadium steps to run as punishment for missing practice.” Asked how he feels, he said he is very sore. He also said that Alex was in pain yesterday too, understandably. He should improve every day and after a few weeks he will be cleared to drive again. “I am hoping to be at the Rock N Green Tomato Fest.” he said. We told him good, because Elvis, was looking forward to it.
THANK YOU
On behalf of the Sperry family, and Alex Heeter and the Frazier family, thank you for your support. In a time of need, to see so many generous people willing to take a risk to help save someones life is a lesson in humanity. We are cautiously optimistic that Jack and Alex will have a speedy recovery and a chance at a long, love filled life. The MostMetro.com family is grateful to call them friends, and also to have friends like the many of you who signed up to donate for Jack.

Artist Of The Week: Kimberly Ceccarelli
ARTIST OF THE WEEK Kimberly Ceccarelli painting in her home studio.

This is the second time I have photographed Kim while she painted. The first was in a sunflower field near Yellow Springs. Kim was set up in the middle of the field with a table a chair and an easel.
“I do a lot of painting outdoors” she told me “and I’m constantly surprised by the people I meet. Folks watch me paint for a while and then they start telling me their life story. I almost feel like a therapist sometimes.”
I asked Kim how long she has been painting. “Well I’ve loved art for a long time but I’ve only been painting seriously for about ten years. I remember my high school art teacher saying she was disappointed I studied nursing in college instead of art. But now I’m retired from nursing and spend lots of time making art. I’ve also taken quite a few painting classes since I retired. Recently I’ve been working with Susan Porges in Cleveland.”
“I like to work on several pieces at the same time, so I have three separate painting places here in this studio. I do quite a few portraits on a commission basis, and I also enjoy still lifes and landscapes. I even do some abstract pieces, like the one I’m painting here. Ten of my pieces are currently on display at Basil’s On Market – Dayton, OH.”
New Seasonal Menu at Mudlick Tap House

The Plate
Mudlick Tap House, located downtown at the corner of 2nd and St. Clair streets, is launching their new summer menu. According to Proprietor Jennifer Dean, the new menu will combine the lunch and dinner menu, meaning entrees will now be available all day. In talking about the new menu, Jen shared, “we’ve really put a lot of thought into creating a menu with more Gluten Free options and dishes that can be made vegetarian or vegan with slight modifications. Our kitchen staff is great about being able to make meals that can accommodate any dietary restrictions.”
Mudlick is hosting a Gluten Free Cider Dinner this Wednesday evening. Joshua Raboin, CEO and head brewer of Redhead Ciderhouse will join Executive Chef Jason to talk you through the cider-making process while taking you on a culinary adventure highlighting the flavors of each dish paired with cider. You can do the whole prix fixe meal for $50 or order it a la carte from 5- 10pm.

Centerville Washington Park District Announces New Programs for Dog Lovers
The Centerville Washington Park District has launched a new initiative with local nonprofit, Wagtown in response to elevated interest in play options for dogs. The Dayton-based nonprofit works with communities who want to create authentic and responsible dog friendliness.

America is becoming increasingly dog friendly, and the Miami Valley region is no exception. Legislative shifts are leaning toward more welcoming and humane laws, better protection for companion animals, and more freedom for businesses who want to make the most of this community booster. Both Wagtown and the Centerville Washington Park District agree that now is the right time to introduce programs that encourage better places for dogs and their owners – all with an eye on responsible dog ownership.
Three programs will be available this spring and summer as well as a service-learning certification called Wagtown Ambassador Academy. The classes will touch on a variety of topics with benefits for dogs and their owners as well as the park district:
First Aid & Dangerous Plant ID for Dog Owners
Thursday, June 20 6:00 – 7:30pm
Bill Yeck Park, Rooks Mill Entrance
Fee: $9 residents, $12 nonresidents
Dogercise: Exercise with Your Dog
Saturday, June 29 9:00 – 10:30am

Dog Park Manners: How to be the Best Dog (and Human)
Monday, July 15 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Oak Grove Park, Noon Optimist Shelter

Wagtown Ambassador Academy (and AmbassaDOG!)
Every Tuesday from June 4 to August 6 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Various locations including field trips and tours
Fee: $150, residents and nonresidents
Full information on each class and links to register are available at https://www.wagtown.org/projects-and-events.
These programs developed for dog owners provide an opportunity for pet parents to socialize their dogs, learn more about fun and safe options at the parks, and enrich their lives by strengthening the human-dog bond. “For many of us, dogs are important members of the family! The Centerville-Washington Park District is excited to find new ways for visitors to responsibly enjoy park visits with their dogs. At the same time, it is important to educate visitors about protecting wildlife, habitat, other park visitors, and the family dog. We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” remarked Arnie Biondo, Director of the Centerville-Washington Park District.
If you dig dogs, The Wagtown Ambassador Academy is a dog-lovers dream: ten weeks of wagging tails, fun, and learning. Every Tuesday from June 4 to August 6, students will learn about a diverse array of topics related to dogs – from ways to get more involved in advocacy and innovative pet activities to becoming a social media influencer and being a part of dog-friendly legislation. In addition to certification for students and their dogs, Ambassador graduates will receive an official dog vest with leash, ballcap, CWPD and Wagtown volunteer apparel, goodie bags from Pet People, and more.
An important component of the Academy is giving back to the community. Each student will volunteer for the park district and its partners over the summer and fall months with dog-related projects and programs. “The Centerville-Washington Park District is focused on expanding volunteer opportunities in 2019. Wagtown’s Ambassador Academy aligns perfectly with our goal of offering a diverse array of opportunities for people to get involved with the community,” explained Ginger Clark, Community Engagement Coordinator. The certification is limited to ten students. Those interested can get more information and apply online beginning May 13.
Park districts are just one of many that are investigating new ways to appeal to dog-loving residents. According to Wagtown research, there has been a surge in interest in programs and projects that involve dogs and their owners. Seeing the growth of the $74 billion pet industry and a record-high dog-ownership rate, community leaders are bringing innovative ideas to their residents. “Communities who are investing in dog-friendly infrastructure, legislation, and communication strategies are seeing a return on the investment. Positive outcomes that we’ve found include safer communities, healthier residents, vibrant economies, safer streets, and a jump in responsible pet ownership behavior,” stated Beth Miller, founder of Wagtown. “While dog friendliness brings many benefits to a city, it can also bring challenges. These programs are designed to address both good and not-so-good byproducts of a dog-loving society,” Miller explained.
