The Strings Attached Tour

“Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history, earning four Grammys and fifteen career nominations.  The legendary musical satirist follows his sold-out 2018 tour of intimate venues – where he played deep cuts for his hardcore fans – with his biggest show ever.  Weird Al is back to playing the hits and classics with his Strings Attached tour, a high-energy rock and comedy production featuring his original band, costumes, props, a video wall and – for the first time – background singers and a full symphony orchestra.

Checkout a Dayton Art Institute Membership at the Dayton Metro Library

June 30, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Families can explore the wonders of the Dayton Art Institute for FREE this summer, by borrowing a Family Membership from the Dayton Metro Library! Starting July 1, DAI Family Memberships will be available for checkout at all branches of the Dayton Metro Library.

A Family Membership includes access to The Lange Family Experiencenter, collection galleries and special exhibitions for up to two adults and up to eight children. (Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.)

Each branch of the Dayton Metro Library system will have five Family Memberships available for checkout, stored in CD cases. When the CD case is presented at the DAI, admission tickets will be issued. If all passes are checked out of the Library, patrons may place a reserve on the next available. Memberships are checked out for three weeks, and are not renewable. Visitors can return to the DAI as often as they like during the three-week loan period. They are also eligible for a 25% discount on official DAI membership during the loan period.

“We are happy to offer library patrons free access to the wonderful collections at the Dayton Art Institute,” said Library Executive Director Tim Kambitsch. “It’s a natural fit. The Library is a place for discovery and inspiration, and certainly the Art Institute is as well.”

This is just the latest collaboration between the two venerated Dayton institutions. The Library and the DAI have also partnered on Reimagining Works, a project that places original artwork created by regional artists into each new or newly remodeled Dayton Metro Library location.

Street Names of Dayton: Gunckel Avenue

June 30, 2019 By Angie Hoschouer 1 Comment

The Honorable Lewis B. Gunckel

Lewis B. Gunckle was born on October 15, 1826 in Germantown, Ohio which was founded by his grandfather, Phillip Gunckel in 1804. He graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1851 and won the first case he tried.

Gunckle was Hiram Strong’s senior partner in the law firm of Gunckel & Strong.  He developed a reputation as one of the most successful jury lawyers in southern Ohio and as a peacemaker who used his influence to settle controversies.

He was elected to the Ohio Senate and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He was a member of the reception committee when Abraham Lincoln came to Dayton in September 1859.

In the Ohio Senate, Gunckle was the author of the soldiers’ voting law, of measures to send medical aid and supplies to the battlefields, and of bills to provide care for the widows and children of those killed in service of the Union.

Gunckel Avenue on the east side of Dayton

In the middle of the Civil War he introduced a bill for the establishment of a state soldiers’ home and this became his pet project.  He canvassed the state as a presidential elector for Lincoln in 1864, and in that same year Governor John Brough established a state soldiers’ home near Columbus with Gunckel as one of its trustees.  The Honorable Lewis B. Gunckel was influential in the establishment of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Dayton. He picked the location and rallied the local citizens to get behind the move and donated $20,000 toward the land purchase. The first winter that the home was established, 750 soldiers were moved there. Gunckel would sit on the board for its first twelve years all without compensation. Today we know the home as the VA Medical Center.

In 1871 Gunckel was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as special commissioner to investigate frauds practiced upon the Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw Indian tribes. His report was a milestone in the history of reforms in the Indian service.

He served in Congress as a representative from the 3rd district from 1872-1875 .   Mr. Gunckel served on the Military Committee and even turned down a pay raise which he was entitled to under the law. He lost his bid for re-election and spent the rest of his life in the practice of law in Dayton.

The Gunckel Family Monument at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum

The law firm of Gunckle & Strong became Gunckle & Rowe, his new partner being E.L. Rowe who had read law with him and became his partner in 1869.  In 1890 the firm became Gunckle, Rowe & Shuey with the addition of Webster W. Shuey. The law firm had many name changes throughout the years and today the firm is known as Coolidge Wall.

In 1860 Gunckle married the daughter of Valentine Winters.  When Winters and his son Jonathan founded Winters National Bank in 1882, Gunckle became of member of the bank’s first board of directors.   He served for three years as the state bar’s delegate to the National Bar Association and served as its treasurer and a member of its executive committee.

Lewis B. Gunckel died on October 3, 1903 at the age of 77. He and his family are buried in Section 44 Lot 1008.

City Encourages Owners of Damaged Properties To Deactivate Water Accounts

June 28, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

The City of Dayton is encouraging owners of properties destroyed or left unoccupiable by the May 27 tornadoes to consider deactivation of their water utility account so that no charges are accumulated during the vacancy period.
While some owners of destroyed or heavily damaged properties have already deactivated water service, the City wants to help additional owners impacted by the storms to avoid unnecessary charges.
For residential or commercial properties in the city of Dayton that have been deemed “destroyed” by City inspectors, the City will immediately deactivate an account to ensure that water service is shut off and that no charges accrue.
Owners of properties deemed as having “major damage” and that are unoccupiable for 30 days or more are encouraged to contact the City of Dayton as soon as possible to discuss if water service is needed and to establish possible account changes.
Customers who want to deactivate accounts or have questions are asked to call 937-333-3550 or to visit the customer service center at 101 W. Third St., ground floor.
The City of Dayton will also deactivate waste collection service and charges where needed and will consider special payment arrangements for customers in storm-affected areas for City utility bills received up to one week before the storms occurred.
Special arrangements for tornado-damaged properties cannot be made at retail payment locations processing routine water bills.
For Dayton utility customers located in Trotwood or Brookville, the Dayton Dept. of Finance will work with those cities to manage accounts and services for affected properties.

Warped Wing Brings on Culinary Director & New Menu

June 27, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Warped Wing Brewing Co. has hired Erin O’Neill to design and run the culinary program at Warped Wing. The culinary program will be reflected at both the downtown Dayton location as well as a new location, “Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery”, a unique barrel- aging facility, Taproom, eatery and test pilot brewery – scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 in Springboro, OH.

Warped Wing helped pioneer the craft beer experience in Dayton over 5 years ago and is the #1 selling craft beer brand in the area. Warped Wing has won accolades for a series of their beer brands within their traditional beer and barrel-aged product portfolio.

“Our drive for making great craft beer has now evolved into a complete customer beverage and food program”, said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster. “Bringing on Culinary Director Erin O’Neill takes us to another level to the benefit of our customers,” said Haggerty. “Erin’s love for creating an amazing food experience is exciting. And seeing how he executes his skills while building menus designed around our beers is even more impressive. It’s a total flavor experience”, Haggerty added.

“My passion for food and beer comes to fruition through the eyes of our customers”, said O’Neill. “Seeing the expression of joy on a customers face is what keeps me excited about this business. Partnering with our brewers to create one-of-a-kind food and beverage selections that compliment one another is what we are all about. Beer has always been about sharing. Now our food program lives up to that same expectation”, said O’Neill.

Warped Wing’a  new menu for the downtown Dayton location debuts  Thursday, June 27th, right before the 4th of July holiday.

The restaurant at both locations will bring innovative, sharable, eclectic menus to complement the robust beer selection. The new Springboro location will have a major focus on smoked meat/food.

McCoy on Movies: Spiderman

June 27, 2019 By Tabari McCoy

Holland, director/co-writer Watts feel right where they need to be with Spider-Man: Far From Home

“Hi there … We’re getting ready to make a lot of money together for a major Hollywood studio!” Peter Parker (Tom Holland, center) gets introduced to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal, right) while Nick Fury’s assistant soldier Dmitri (Numan Acar, far left) in a scene from SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. Credit: Jay Maidment © 2019 CTMG, Inc. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jon Favreau, Jacob Balaton, Zendaya, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Angourie Rice, J.B. Smoove, Martin Starr, Tony Revolori, Remy Hii and Marisa Tomei

DIRECTOR(S): Jon Watts

WEB SITE: https://www.spidermanfarfromhome.movie/
THE BACK STORY: Still reeling from the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home finds Peter Parker (Tom Holland) still attempting to get over the [SPOILER ALERT – BUT YOU’VE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO FIND THIS OUT!] death of his mentor Tony Stark. Now, Tony’s trusted right hand man Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) is trying to help Peter progress and move forward; Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), on the other hand, are hoping to talk to him about the Elementals, a threat that just popped up in Mexico and may be moving in to more spots around the globe.

Peter, however, has one thing on his mind – well two, if you count his suspicious about what his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) may be up to in her free time – and that’s his upcoming class trip to Europe with Ned (Jacob Balaton), MJ (Zendaya), Flash (Tony Revolori), Betty (Angourie Rice), Brad (Remy Hii) and their science teachers/chaperones Mr. Harrington (Martin Starr) and Mr. Bell (J.B. Smoove). Unfortunately for Peter, (1) Nick Fury isn’t going to take kindly to him trying to ghost his calls; (2) Brad – who grew up quite a bit in the 5 years after “the blip” – has his eyes on MJ, too and (3) It seems like that disturbance in Mexico seems to be heading towards Europe.

But luckily for Peter, he’s about to get some help in form of a soldier from an alternate Earth who has come to fights the Elementals by the name of Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) … Or, as the world will soon come to know him, Mysterio …
THE REVIEW: Given all that happened in the latter movie, many fans were shocked to learn that it would be Spider-Man: Far From Home and not Avengers: Endgame that would wrap up Marvel’s Phase Three plans. It would almost seem that by doing so, Far From Home would have an immense amount of pressure to live up to, especially since a year is slated to pass before Marvel drops another film on the public. But this is Marvel we’re talking about, which means there is no way they were going to let Sony Pictures let one of its most iconic characters go out and make the studio nor Iron Man down.In other words, Far From Home lives up to expectations and then some with a well-crafted story, action sequences, plenty of humor and a game-changing ending worthy of passing the torch from Tony Stark to Peter Parker.

Given that longtime fans of the character have already watched Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield attempt to carve out their own niche as Spider-Man, Holland may now own the mantle as the definitive actor to play him – Far From Home serving as his greatest showcase to date. Exhibiting the classic naiveté of a teenager at times as he still tries to understand of what he is fully capable both as a superhero and a young man with his eye on a girl, Holland also shows all of the classic comic book elements that made Spider-Man such a big deal in the first place in terms of his humor, creativity and strength when he is forced to step up and go to battle. His interactions with his all of co-stars only serve to enhance these facets of the character as his ragtag group of fellow students feels perfectly cast with Balaton, Zendaya, Revolori, Hii and Rice all adding perfectly to the story.

Likewise, the adults more than come through in Far From Home with their respective roles. While you’re never really going to ever go wrong with Jackson doing Jackson-like things for two hours as Nick Fury with Smulders exhibiting a calm cool as his second-in-command, Favreau keeps his comedy contingency high while adding as a bit of diet Stark to whom Holland’s Parker can vent his frustrations. Tomei keeps finding ways to make the cinematic version of Aunt May more interesting she’s ever been and Gyllenhaal expertly exhibits all of the elements of his character ala the way Michael Keaton did in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Director Jon Watts (who co-wrote the film with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers) proves his previous work with Spider-Man wasn’t a fluke, as Far From Home steps up everything the aforementioned Homecoming does in terms of pacing, humor, peril, general storytelling and visual engagement well. The film never feels as long as its 2 hour, 15 minute running time, no moments feel wasted and his ability to get everything he needs in the moment out of his actors definitely pays dividends with the finished product. In short, Watts and co. have done the thing that is very hard to do with any superhero story, let alone a movie in general: Craft a tale that satisfies every need with a cast that you won’t spend time second-guessing if they were right for the role and a story that contains enough original, organic moments combined “oh – didn’t see that coming!” ones to tie into the larger world (in this case, the Marvel Cinematic Universe / MCU for short) while still being its own unique thing.

So while the character himself may be far from home, the latest Spider-Man movie proves that when it comes to the future of the MCU, he’s definitely found one as long as Holland, Watts and co. can continue to deliver quality stories like this.

Marion’s 54th Anniversary 50% off Pizza Sale Coming July 7-11

June 26, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

On August 19, 1965, after investing his life savings, Marion Glass opened a pizza restaurant at 460 Patterson Road in Dayton Ohio called Marion’s Piazza.

When Marion opened his restaurant, it was a first for pizza establishments in Dayton as he offered seating for over 200 customers in his dining room (all other pizza parlors at that time only offered carryout service with no inside dining).

Marion developed a thin crust pizza (now often referred to as “Dayton Style” pizza). By using only the finest ingredients on his pizzas, sandwiches, pastas and salads, Marion’s Piazza soon became a Dayton favorite!

To date, Marion’s Piazza has been voted “Dayton’s Best Pizza” in over 37 local newspaper and magazine surveys and has been rated “Second In The Nation of Independent Pizza Establishments” in Pizza Today Magazine.

Netflix Sets Release Date for Local Filmmakers Sundance Winning Documentary

June 26, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s been a busy month for Yellow Springs filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert.  Earlier this month The Museum of Modern Art opened a career retrospective Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film | MoMA . And just today Netflix announced a Release Date for their latest film, “American Factory.” This eye-popping look at the differences between American and Chinese workers when they come together at a Chinese car-glass factory in Ohio, will open globally in 190 countries on Netflix and in select North American theaters on August 21. Netflix acquired the  non-fiction feature out of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary and became a top early contender in the 2020 Oscar race.

“We are honored and thrilled that Netflix and Higher Ground are teaming up to bring ‘American Factory’ to the world,” said Reichert and Bognar in a statement. “Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. We’re excited about the national and global conversations we believe this film can spark.”

Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar

According to a Indie wire, “The Participant Media production focuses on the dramatic culture clash when a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Following its Sundance premiere, the film impressed Barack and Michelle Obama, who launched their Netflix-partnered Higher Ground Productions last spring “to harness the power of storytelling,” as the former U.S. president described it at the time. This marks the first title from Higher Ground to premiere on the streaming service.”

Stay tuned for more information on how the film release will be celebrated locally.

‘Waitress’ Review – Victoria Theatre Association – Bruised But Not Broken

June 26, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Life can often be terribly messy and completely blissful at the same time. Case in point: Jenna Hunterson, an expectant mother and pie baking extraordinaire at the center of the heartfelt joy and compelling drama within Waitress, the 2016 Tony Award-nominated musical receiving an outstanding local premiere courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series at the Schuster Center.

Featuring firm direction by Diane Paulus, a terrifically introspective and humorous pop-infused score by Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, and a witty, relevant book by Jessie Nelson based on the 2007 film of the same name by the late Adrienne Shelly, Waitress finds hard-working, meek and unassuming Jenna (an excellent Christine Dwyer) at a critical crossroads. Stuck in a loveless marriage with her abusive husband Earl (Jeremy Woodard, a believably one-dimensional jerk), she receives overdue respect and passionate romance in the arms of her handsome gynecologist Dr. Pomatter (a delightfully charming and neurotic Steven Good). But is her affair, her pursuit of happiness, really worth it, especially with a little one on the way? Actually, Jenna doesn’t want a kid, readily admitting to Dr. Pomatter that her pregnancy is not a party. Even so, the birth of her child, the eventual true love of her life, holds the key to realizing her existence has only just begun.

Dwyer, a stunning Elphaba in the 2012 Dayton engagement of “Wicked,” returns with understated finesse, warmly tapping into the therapeutic nature of Jenna’s penchant for pies (her mother was also a pro in the kitchen, an element deserving deeper exploration) and providing a superb transformation late in the show climaxing with the emotional ballad She Used to Be Mine coupled with Jenna’s decision to finally take matters into her own hands. In addition to the aforementioned Good, she receives wonderful support from the sassy, motherly Melody A. Betts and kooky, naïve Ephie Aardema as Jenna’s thoughtful co-workers Becky and Dawn, respectively. Betts, a vocal powerhouse, notably provides a knockout rendition of the soulful I Didn’t Plan It. Jovial standout Jeremy Morse is a hoot as Dawn’s overexcited beau Ogie, a plum comedic role he also portrayed on Broadway. Ryan G. Dunkin commands attention as Cal, head cook and Jenna’s boss.

Paulus’ first-rate artistic team includes choreographer Lorin Latarro (filling many transitions with expressive fluidity), scenic designer Scott Pask, costumer Suttirat Anne Larlarb, lighting designer Ken Billington, sound designer Jonathan Deans, music director Robert Cookman, and conductor/pianist Lilli Wosk.

Without a doubt, this national tour of Waitress, on par with the original Broadway production, brings Dayton’s 2018-2019 season to a winning close.

Waitress continues through Sunday, June 30 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Act One: 75 minutes; Act Two: 65 minutes. Tickets are $26-$115. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit ticketcenterstage.com.

Taj Ma Garaj Collection Up For Auction

June 26, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

The Taj Ma Garaj Collection, comprising the cars, automobilia, and collectibles of late well-known collector, Mr. John Dixon, will be sold at auction this fall.   The Collection, to be offered in a single-day sale on 28 September onsite in Dayton, Ohio, features more than 30 motor cars alongside more than 350 lots of memorabilia and collectibles.

The late John Dixon’s love affair with Porsche began the day a 911 passed him while he was driving his muscle car on the freeway in high school, and the rest is history. John purchased his first Porsche the following year and began seriously building his collection in the 1990s. Now, the Taj Ma Garaj is an eclectic Porsche paradise, featuring over 30 various Porsche and Volkswagen motor cars, along with more than 350 lots of memorabilia including sought-after Porsche unobtainium, rare literature, collectibles, engines, and an assortment of arcade ephemera.

John opened the Taj Ma Garaj Collection to thousands of visitors over the years and was proud to share his passion with fellow enthusiasts, frequently hosting charity car shows as well as offering the collection site as an event facility. Known for his sense of humor, John lived by his own rules and was endlessly passionate not just about Porsche but in all aspects of his life; first and foremost, his family and friends, along with his business, and his philanthropic efforts to help those less fortunate, specifically patients of the local children’s hospital.

The Taj Ma Garaj building is truly a Porsche enthusiast’s heaven and RM Sotheby’s is honored to present the Collection on behalf of John’s beloved wife Vickie and the Dixon family. John Dixon was as knowledgeable about his cars as he was passionate, and what he has assembled represents sought-after high watermarks in Porsche production, alongside cars like a wrought-iron Beetle that are just plain fun. The Taj Ma Garaj Collection is sure to draw interest from fellow Porsche collectors far and wide this fall.
