Oregon District’s Hauntfest Cancelled

Out of concern for the health and safety of our guests and employees and local community, and with a deep appreciation for the financial soundness of our bars, restaurants, retails, and service businesses, the Oregon District Business Association will not be holding Hauntfest in any capacity this year.

Out on 5th, the pedestrian mall created from the closure of 5th Street to vehicular traffic, will still be in place on October 31 to encourage safe practices related to COVID-19. We request strict adherence to social distancing and mask-wearing, every day and especially on celebratory holidays like Halloween.

DORA (designated outdoor refreshment area) will not be in effect per the City ordinance, therefore, there will be NO open containers permitted within the DORA boundary permitted on Oct. 31 and open container fines will be in effect.

We are disappointed that we must make this decision and announcement cancelling an event that has such a rich history and dedicated following. We must, however, focus on keeping our communities safe and as an organization, we must be mindful to not offer any services that compete with the permanent brick and mortar establishments in the Oregon District.

Home Sweet Home Cafe Opens Saturday

Brent Herzog has dreamed about having his own restaurant since he was 18 years old.  He has worked in the industry, soaking up knowledge at each of his jobs along the way. He has managed Disney restaurants, a minor league baseball stadium, the Spaghetti Factory, Panera Bread, Papa Johns, hotel restaurants, and most currently, the food courts at the University of Dayton.

He met his wife Jaime while they both were working at Walt Disney World. After meeting, they traveled the country for a few years, got married, moved back to Florida, had a daughter, Lily, and finally moved to Dayton, where Jaime grew up. Brent was raised as a dairy farmer up in Minnesota so Ohio was new to him.

They still had the dream of opening their own eatery. They came across Jerri’s in Englewood, that specialized in home cooking and it was for sale. They decided this was the opportunity they’d been looking for.

They feel  lucky to take over Jerri’s Catering. They will be keeping a lot of their more popular menu items like the hot shots and the pork chop dinner, but they will also be adding their own touches.  Brent predicts his one pound burger Home Sweet Home burger will be a big hit.  They will  be adding some outdoor seating and a pastry bar with a coffee and tea station. Eventually, after COVID, they plan on adding  some board games and corn hole.

They are also looking forward to supporting local artists by offering their walls as gallery space.

So is the Village Family Restaurant in Waynesville.  As owner Lacie Sims says “while we aren’t terribly good at making arts and crafts and all the other cool stuff you can buy at the Festival, we have put together a special menu that we will have for the ENTIRE MONTH of October featuring Sauerkraut Festival Favorites! Local Filmmaker to make “Triangle Park” Feature Film on the NFL’s First-Ever Game

Allen Farst, founder of Niche Productions, is ecstatic to announce today that work has begun on his new project, “Triangle Park,” an upcoming feature film that celebrates the centennial of the National Football League’s first-ever game, played in Dayton, Ohio.

The film will send spectators back in time to experience October 3, 1920, when the hometown Dayton Triangles kicked off league history with a 14-0 victory over the Columbus Panhandles. The contest was played in front of 5,000 fans at Dayton’s now-historic Triangle Park.

Farst plans to shed a light on the largely unknown story of how Dayton emerged as one of the 13 original NFL teams. It’s an enthralling journey that showcases how the city overcame the Great Dayton Flood and experienced an industrial boom just prior to the league getting under way. Football fan or not, moviegoers will be treated to a fascinating piece of Gem City history.

This is one of the greatest stories that needs to be told from the Dayton area. I’m excited to write and direct something that will represent the community the way it should be,” Farst said

Fans can go to triangleparkmovie.com and support the film. “We are hoping to be the All-time highest-funded project in Kickstarter history!” Farst said. “Hopefully, people will help us support Triangle Park in a big way.”

Triangle Park will be Licensing exclusive photos, programs, documents and film from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and archival footage from NFL Films.

Production will begin in 2021, with the movie scheduled to be released sometime in 2022.  A kickstarter campaign to help fund the film will be launched laster this week.  Join the email list for more info.

Kevin Myers Views of Dayton: Carillion Historical Park

This week Kevin has captured Carillion Historical Park at night!

 

The art modern-style carillon tower was built in 1942, funded by Edward Deeds’ wife Edith Walton Deeds and was designed to commemorate the Deeds family. When the tower was built, each of 23 bells was inscribed with the name of a family member, with the “silent” bells bearing the names of deceased family members and ringing bells cast with the names of family members then living. Today, with 57 bells, the carillon is Ohio’s largest. The National Park Service listed the Deeds Carillon on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

 

Carillon Park refurbished the carillon in 1988, converting it from an electric keyboard controlled instrument to a traditional, baton-keyboard mechanical carillon. The Park’s carillonneur, Larry Weinstein performs live carillon concerts every Sunday at 3:00 from May to October.

 

 

In 20018 the historic Callahan Clock that stood over Dayton’s skyline for more than a century was moved to Carillon Park with  a $500,000 gift from the Dayton-based Robert Brethen Foundation last November to “lift the historic Callahan Clock into the air and return this well-known landmark to Dayton’s skyline.”

The clock, also known as the Gem City Clock, was set atop the Brethren Tower.

Story Slam is Back for a 5th Season!

If you are fan of The Moth radio hour then you’ll love Story Slam.

Story Slam stories are 1st person true stories told live and are all centered on monthly theme.

The first Slam of the season is October 20th, 7pm at Wiley’s Comedy Club.  Seating will be socially distanced and we do ask that you wear masks upon entry.  Once you are seated at your table you are welcome to remove your mask as you enjoy food and drinks. Tickets are just $5 for the show.  The theme for the October slam is Escape.

Dayton’s own Story Slam event is starting back with a two hour workshop on October 6. The workshop, that takes place at Wiley’s Comedy Club from 7-8:30pm,  will cover the basics of constructing your story for the Story Slam stage. This is perfect for both first timers and experienced storytellers looking to improve their skills creating and telling true stories in front of an audience.

Workshop participants will cover the basics of creating a 5 minute story for the stage, practice delivery at the mic and go home equipped to return with a story for the Story Slam event.

The Story Slam Workshop is only $10.00 and is taught by Bryan Suddith, Story Slam Producer and 4 time Moth winning storyteller, register online.  Each registration also comes with a ticket to a Story Slam.

TEDxDayton Announces Speakers for 2020

The lineup of speakers for this year’s TEDxDayton event, called TEDxDayton 2020, have been announced. This free event will take place virtually on November 10, 12, 17, and 19 at 7 pm. There will be no cost to watch this event.

Over the course of 4 days, sixteen local speakers will give talks to share the TEDx spirit of ideas worth spreading. All the speakers auditioned earlier this year and were chosen by the Speakers Committee in June.

MoMBA Mountain Bike Rentals are Back

Want to go mountain biking at MoMBA, but don’t own a bike? You can try out the nine miles of single track without committing to buying gear. Bring the little ones out — youth bikes are available. The Hilltop Flow Trail and Tot Track are perfect for getting the kids to try something new. From the novice to the most advanced rider, everyone can have two-wheeled fun at MoMBA!

Mountain bikes are now available for rent on select Tuesdays and Saturdays at the MetroParks Mountain Biking Area (MoMBA).

Advance registration is required, and fees must be paid at the time of registration. No walk-ins will be accepted due to COVID-19 safety considerations. Helmets are provided with each bike rental. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10 for a 2 hour session.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19,special procedures are in place. You must wear a face covering and practice social distancing during the check-in and outfitting process.

THE BACK STORY: Old Dolio Dyne (Evan Rachel Wood) is a 26 year-old Los Angeles resident. Her home, however, is unconventional as it is an office space next to some sort of industrial park where a pink liquid oozes into the room. Joining her in this most unconventional of living spaces are her parents Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins), grifters by trade who are always on the lookout for their next scheme or heist. It’s not a good life, but it’s the only one Old Dolio knows.

Then Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) comes into the picture.

Meeting her by chance on a flight as part of their latest scheme, Melanie seems excited at the prospect of getting into a new line of work and comes up with a plan of her own to pull off a new heist. But, as Melanie’s love of life – and other circumstances – start to open up her mind to other aspects of the human experience, Old Dolio starts to question her current existence and what could lie ahead in the future.

Who knows – becoming rich in her own spirit might be the most rewarding prize of all.

THE REVIEW: “Quirky.” “Abstract.” “Weird.”

Sometimes you watch a film and appreciate it for what it is, even if it’s not something you really enjoyed, so to speak, yourself. In the case of Kajillionaire, you likely will find yourself wrestling with that same emotion due to the committed performance of Wood against a story that essentially can be viewed in one of two ways: (1) This is a (insert one of the three adjectives above) story about broken people and someone trying to find what many of us inherently do (or at least, believe we should enjoy) or (2) This is a (insert one of the three adjectives above) that is just (insert one of the other two remaining adjectives above).

Earlier this month, Wood gave a rather revealing interview to The New York Times in which it was revealed she uses many of her roles to heal herself from past trauma. That in turn should help explain her (1) connection to Old Dolio and (2) portrayal of the character, a woman who has never felt any real (or, if you prefer, “normal”) emotions to or from anyone, including her parents. She is essentially – like many of the personalities on her HBO series Westworld – a near-robotic humanoid life form who knows her role and her function in the functioning disfunction that is her family’s business. You get to watch a young person (Wood may be 33, but she pulls off 26 with a way that makes her character feel even younger) coming to grips with her concept of the world around her and trying to deal with deprogramming herself in the process. Whereas as Rodriguez gets to play an upbeat, bouncy young woman who seems very eager to get involved in something she sees as exciting, Wood’s character is a solitary, introverted one growing desperate to escape her reality.
If you enjoy the films of Wes Anderson, you’ll likely like Kajillionaire, which are the first type of things that come to mind in terms of the humor (which is SPARSE). If you simply enjoy a deep dive into a character (even if the others aren’t characters aren’t explored enough as you’d hope), you’ll probably enjoy Kajillionaire.
Then again, if watching people who are essentially without redeeming qualities do nothing to change your opinion of them over the course of 100 minutes, are weird seemingly for the sake of it and/or are the type of people you’d see in Walmart, report to an employee and then leave, this is not the movie for you. What will find intriguingly unconventional, others will find annoying. Whereas some will be drawn to Wood’s performance of a shy, sheltered introvert, others will see the weirdo in their high school class they one day figured would end up on the local news for less than stellar reasons. If you start to watch the movie, you’ll likely watch it to the end to see what will happen, only to probably be either elated or deflated by what happens.
In much the same fashion that very few are destined to become millionaires and billionaires, Kajillionaire is likely only for the select few. But those select few will really enjoy it no matter what the rest of us see.

WiBN is also adding two new awards. The first is the Jeanne Porter Career Achievement Award, which will be awarded annually to a woman who continues to inspire, influence and impact the business community and the world around them well beyond their initial recognition as a Top 25 Woman. This award is meant to recognize an impactful professional legacy, like that of Jeanne Porter, founder of WiBN. Robin Brun, Robin Brun Consulting, is the 2021 recipient.

The second new honor is the WiBN Youth Enterprise Award, which recognizes the effort of a female or a group of young women between the ages of 15-22 to create and implement a charitable program or business that changes the lives of women in the community at large. Recipient in 2021 is Femme Aid Collaborative which was started by three students from Oakwood High School to eliminate “period poverty” for women unable to afford essential feminine hygiene products.

A pandemic-appropriate celebration is planned for all of these honorees in February 2021. It may not be the traditional gala held in previous years, but it will be a memorable event for the honorees, sponsors, WiBN members and others.

Pick Your Own Pumpkins at Young’s

Young’s Jersey Dairy has grown and sold pumpkins for decades – and their fields are filled with orange  this fall!

There are two ways to find just the right pumpkin for your family. The most exciting way is to “pick your own” pumpkin directly from the field.  You can Pick Your Own Pumpkins on every day from 11am – 6pm. To choose your pumpkin this way, purchase a ticket at Cowvin’s Corny Bin located between the Dairy Store and the Barn, then get on the wagon ride that goes to the Pumpkin Patch. After arriving at the field, get off the wagon and look (and look) until you find just the right pumpkin (or pumpkins!) to fit your needs. This is a great way to have fun, enjoy a wagon ride, and get a fresh pumpkin all at the same time.

The cost is now $9 per pumpkin or 3/$24, which includes the wagon ride to the pumpkin patch. Last day for Pick Your Own Pumpkins is Oct 27.

Another way to find your special pumpkin is to look through the many pumpkins already harvested from the field and displayed next to the Dairy Store. There are always several thousand small pumpkins that sell for $3.00 or less. The larger pumpkins are all individually marked with a price. Young’s has a large selection of gourds and Indian Corn for your fall decorations!

While you’re their check out the  family fun maze, created from more than 3½ acres of cornfield and has over one mile of paths. You get on the Cowvin’s Corny Maze wagon ride for a trip out to the corn maze – then get lost for a while – usually 25-50 minutes – depending on your skills and luck – then hop on the wagon for a trip back to the barn area.  Age 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The maze is open 11am everyday (weather dependent) to around 6pm to give the last group at least an hour before it starts getting dark to find their way out. Cowvin’s Corny Maze goes through our cornfield and has many twists, dead-ends and tricky twists. It’s an adventure!

The price is $7.50 a person age 5 and older. Age 4 and under are free. Children age 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  Price includes a wagon ride to and from the maze.
