Decompress Peacefully With QiGong-An Ancient Healing Art That Strengthens Mind and Body

September 24, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

QiGong is an ancient healing art that strengthens mind and body by increasing the supply and flow of qi – energy / breath throughout the body.  Unprecedented times show us where we are “power-less” – Qigong shows us where we are powerful. We may not be able to heal the world – but we can heal our internal world with simple yet powerful movements that, with continued practice, can help lower blood pressure, improve balance, stimulate internal organs and bodily systems and generally pave a way to a healthier and happier you.

Decompress peacefully with us by practicing this healing art at the lovely Secret Eden Pavilion.  Qi Gong is a series of very easy flow exercises that will help cultivate your breath and revitalize your qi or energy. It is easily adaptable to all health levels – and can even be done sitting a chair as needed for balance.

KAJILLIONAIRE Opens, Honoring RBG, and Big Titles Coming To The Neon

September 23, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

We’ve lost an amazing woman and a marvelous judge on the Supreme Court, and we want to honor her achievements by bringing back the hit documentary RBG to the big screen for a handful of special screenings.  This return engagement will start Friday!
Additionally, we will open Miranda July’s new film – KAJILLIONAIRE – starring Evan Rachel Wood, Debra Winger, Richard Jenkins and Gina Rodriguez.  The pictures below are a couple photos that I quickly snapped while at Sundance in January.  Miranda has a unique and fascinating voice as a filmmaker and storyteller, and this quirky film is full of surprises.  If you’re a person who still listens to and loves vinyl, you can enter our contest to win a lovely vinyl soundtrack from this film by posting a picture of your favorite soundtrack on your facebook or instagram page and tagging @neonmovies.
Lastly, in our Virtual Cinema, we just added the wonderful documentary OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE, and on Friday, we’ll add a touchingly beautiful film THE ARTIST’S WIFE starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern.
I’ve got some fun news about what’s coming down the road for in-person engagements.  Next Friday, we will open SAVE YOURSELVES! – a hit from this year’s Sundance.  On Oct. 9, we’ll open both ON THE ROCKS from Sofia Coppola (with Bill Murray!) and THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 from Aaron Sorkin!
As a reminder…tickets for STEVIE NICKS 24 KARAT GOLD THE CONCERT are on sale now.  Current scheduled shows are for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 and Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 and 7:00.

New Bookings for In-Person Screenings:
Synopsis for KAJILLIONAIRE: “From acclaimed writer/director Miranda July comes a profoundly moving and wildly original comedy. Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.” (Focus Features) Click the image below to visit the film’s official site.
Synopsis for RBG: We’ve lost a true American hero, and we’re celebrating her life by bringing back the fantastic documentary about her life! “At the age of 85, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had developed a lengthy legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. But the unique personal journey of her rise to the nation’s highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans – until now. RBG explores Ginsburg’s life and career.” (Magnolia Pictures) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

New in our Virtual Cinema:
Synopsis for OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE: “This wonderful documentary explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks was a fearless explorer of unknown mental worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of the human experience, and our shared humanity.” (Zeitgeist Films) VARIETY wrote, “A portrait of the poetic neurologist of AWAKENINGS, shot at the end of his life, [which] takes a tender and thrilling look at the sacred demons that drove him.” Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $12.
Synopsis for THE ARTIST’S WIFE: Available starting September 25! “Claire (Lena Olin) lives a domestic life in the Hamptons as the wife of celebrated artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern). Once a promising painter herself, Claire now lives in the shadow of her husband’s illustrious career. While preparing work for his final show, Richard’s moods become increasingly erratic, and he is diagnosed with dementia. As his memory and behavior deteriorate, she shields his condition from the art community while trying to reconnect him with his estranged daughter and grandson from a previous marriage. Challenged by the loss of her world as she knew it, Claire must now decide whether to stand with Richard on the sidelines or step into the spotlight herself.” Click the image below to pre-order 72 hour access to the film for $12.  You can watch the trailer HERE.

Wanna know what’s coming down the road in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On October 2, we’ll open the award-winning coming-of-age film ONCE UPON A RIVER as well as a new documentary with Ohio connections – THE DISRUPTED. A really wonderful documentary – SAUL AND RUBY’S HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR BAND will open on Oct. 7, and on Oct. 9, we’ll have a film that art lovers will adore – AGGIE – a film about philanthropist Agnes Gund. On Oct 14, we’ll begin a film called MY NAME IS PEDRO – an inspiring documentary about a teacher and how transformative a teacher can be to the community at large. More to come!
Next Saturday, Oct. 3 from 11:00am until 4:00pm, many businesses in downtown Dayton will have a Sidewalk Sale.  We decided to join in this time with the help of some friends.  We’ll have our popcorn available for folks who would rather not come inside…and we’ve invited Pink Moon Goods to come set up shop for the afternoon.  Pink Moon Goods is an exciting new retail business in Dayton.  Their selection of home goods is curated and includes items that combine skill, intelligence, and virtue for ethical living.  If you are looking for new ways to reduce waste at home, support small businesses who value and respect protecting the environment, or some good old fashion socially conscious retail therapy there is sure to be something at Pink Moon Goods for you.  You can check them out on Instagram – @pinkmoongoods.
“All Access” passes and single “tickets” for all virtual presentations of The 15th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival are now on sale.  We had to make a major pivot this year to make the festival happen – so about 90% of it will take place virtually.  A $50 pass will get you access to all 6 virtual screenings (5 features and a package of shorts) as well as 2 tickets to our one in-person package – TOP DRAWER SHORTS VOL #2.  The line-up is strong, and we’re still ironing out lots of details (virtual filmmaker Q&A’s, video work with our sponsors, etc.).  Click the image below to check out all of our selections.  The festival is set for Oct. 9-15. Virtual components will be accessible to anyone in Ohio…so please help spread the word.  If you need a little help figuring it all out, I’ve created a tutorial video that is viewable HERE. (The image below is from the short film THE SHAWL– playing in TOP DRAWER SHORTS VOL #2.)
We hope to see you soon!
Be safe & well.
My best,
Jonathan

CDC Eviction Moratorium: Rent Assistance Available through MVCAP

September 22, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an order on Sept. 4, 2020, to temporarily halt residential evictions based on nonpayment of rent for those most vulnerable to homelessness.
This order extends until the end of 2020. The CDC’s eviction moratorium serves as a public health measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Housing is essential for individuals and families to have an effective place to quarantine, isolate, and social distance. Without this moratorium, low-income individuals and families that have suffered substantial financial setbacks because of pandemic shutdowns will be evicted from their homes and forced to live either on the street or in group settings.
For many communities, this order imposes a challenge on landlords who are dependent on tenants’ rent payments to meet their mortgage and other financial obligations. However, aid is available for Miami Valley tenants impacted by loss of income due to COVID-19, thanks to $5 million in CARES Act funding allocated by the Montgomery County Commission and CARES Act Community Service Block Grant funding for Darke, Greene, and Preble County residents. This aid may include paying all rent owed and future rent extending to the end of the year. Every Montgomery County household at any income level is eligible for assistance.
Both landlords and tenants in the Miami Valley will benefit from this measure to maintain safe and secure housing while ensuring CARES funding is timely and appropriately administered throughout the community to prevent a housing crisis creating a win-win situation for landlords and tenants.
Under the CDC Order, tenants who meet certain conditions cannot be evicted if they have exhausted their best efforts to pay rent, seek government rental assistance and are likely to become homeless or be required to move into crowded quarters due to eviction.
Tenants must provide a signed declaration form certifying, under penalty of perjury, that they meet all of the established criteria. The tenant must be able to answer “yes” to each of the five conditions below to qualify:
1) The tenant has used best efforts to obtain all available government assistance for rent or housing (i.e., any governmental rental or housing payment benefits available to the tenant or any household member);
2) One of the following is true:
  • The tenant expects to earn no more than $99,000 in annual income for calendar year 2020 (or no more than $198,000 if filing a joint tax return);
  • The tenant was not required to report any income in 2019 to the IRS; or
  • The tenant received an Economic Impact Payment (i.e., a stimulus check) under the CARES Act;
3) The tenant is unable to pay the full rent owed due to substantial loss of household income, loss of compensable hours of work or wages, lay-offs, or extraordinary out-of-pocket medical expenses;
4) The tenant is using best efforts to make timely partial payments that are as close to the full payment as the individual’s circumstances may permit, taking into account other non-discretionary expenses; and
5) If evicted, the tenant would likely become homeless, need to move into a homeless shelter, or need to move into a new residence shared by other people who live in close quarters because the tenant has no other available housing options.
Tenants can apply for rental assistance online at miamivalleycap.org or https://www.mcohio.org/alert_detail.php from any mobile device, paper applications are available in the lobby at 719 S. Main Street, Dayton, Ohio. To be protected from eviction, tenants that meet the eligibility requirements should immediately complete and give the Eviction Prevention Declaration to their landlord or the owner of the residential property.

Kevin Myers Views of Dayton: Dayton National Cemetery

September 21, 2020 By Kevin Myers

The Dayton National Cemetery was established as the permanent burial site for residents of the Central Branch of the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1867. It is one of 11 federal cemeteries affiliated with the system of National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Management of these facilities was transferred from the U.S. Army/National Home system to the newly created Veterans Administration in 1930.

The design of the cemetery is attributed to Chaplain (and Capt.) William B. Earnshaw, who was considered to have “judgment and taste” in these matters. Earnshaw served in the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Cumberland, from which he was named superintendent at Stones River and Nashville National Cemeteries. In September 1867, Earnshaw arrived at the Dayton Soldiers Home, as it became known, having been encouraged to seek the position by Gen. George Thomas.

The Soldiers Home cemeteries were to be “laid out and cared for, as far as practicable, in the manner prescribed for National Cemeteries.” The single-most visual cemetery construction is the lofty Soldiers’ Monument around which faceted, concentric rows of graves are arranged. Two features found here are common to many older national cemeteries. There are two ornamental 19th-century cannons located at the base of Soldiers’ Monument, and seven “Bivouac of the Dead” verse tablets.

.

The Dayton Soldiers’ Monument dominates the national cemetery from atop a mound at the center of the landscape. The cornerstone was laid in 1873, and it was completed in 1877. This dramatic structure is composed of a 30-foot marble column on a granite base with an ornamental cap and soldier posed at parade rest. The column was one of six that were salvaged from the Benjamin Henry Latrobe-designed Bank of Philadelphia when it was demolished in 1867-68. Latrobe worked on the White House and U.S. Capitol, and is credited with introducing Greek Revival architecture to America. The monument was designed by veterans at the soldiers’ home and the Philadelphia-firm of William Struthers and Sons, expert stonemasons, carved the base, capital and statue. President Rutherford B. Hayes, Ohioan and former Union general, delivered the dedication address for the monument on Sept. 12, 1877, to a crowd of about 22,000. Some years after the dedication, four figures representing the Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery and Navy were added at the corners of the base. Two ornamental artillery cannons now flank the Soldiers’ Monument.

The “Memorial to 33 soldiers of the War of 1812 Buried in this Cemetery…” is a bronze plaque affixed to a tall boulder. The text continues: “Honoring Josephine C. Diefenbach state president 1915-1932. Erected by the Ohio Society United States Daughters of 1812 on the anniversary of Perry’s Victory – September 10, 1936.”

Kali’s 12 Areas of Training (Filipino Martial Arts)

September 19, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The highly sophisticated and comprehensive martial art from the Philippines is weapon based, but ultimately an empty hand system.
The term Kali is an ancient word that serves as an umbrella term for all Filipino martial arts. According to Guro Dan Inosanto, Kali is a portmanteau of the Cebuano words “kamot”, meaning hand, and “lihok”, meaning motion. There are many other names for these arts such as Eskrima, Arnis, Anis De Mano, Estoque, Pananandata, Pagkalikali….etc

Defending Democracy: An 8 Week Series.

September 19, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

We are living in a most unusual time. There seems to be a desire to silence the voices of Americans…on all sides. To have the discussions necessary, I m fortunate enough to teach a class at Wright State University this year known as ED2100:Education in a Democracy. The topic seems so simple. The idea of educating people to understand our Democracy and the importance of their individual voice is fundamental….or is it?

27 students have joined me on this journey. We are looking hard at diversity, privilege, equality, oppression and respect of others’ views. What makes this conversation so important is a divided nation, an upcoming election…and the unique views and voices of these young people looking to broaden their minds and their world. At the center of it all is the overwhelming reality that …‘if education fails, so does this Democracy!’ – credited to John Adams.

In one of their first big assignments, TEAM2100 was charged with relating lyrics from a popular song to the state of our republic. Although we aren’t including students’ names, their views are pretty straightforward. Some of the songs/lyrics they chose, old and new, were spot on:

“I…can barely walk the city streets whiteout a cop harassing me, searching me and asking my identity”, Tupac;

“If you’re looking for hope tonight, raise your hand. If you’re feeling alone and don’t understand. If you’re fighting in the fight of your life, then stand. We’re gonna make it through this hand-in-hand.” , For King and County;

“We didn’t start the Fire, It was always burning since the world’s been turning. We didn’t start the fire, No we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it.” , Billy Joel.

“Lil tear gas cleared the whole place out, I’ll be back with the Hazmat for the next round.”  Anderson Paak.

“We hate the government but get government assistance. You Ain’t doing what you did in the past then why tell us and I ain’t blaming no white man for my failures and I don’t blame the judge for the time I did.”, Knocka

From these lyrics, conversation…and here is a sampling of what is on their minds:

“…as I am working toward becoming a high school teacher I am beginning to realize that we really aren’t taught about our civic duties. We kind of take for granted that people will read and learn about what elected officials are up to….BIG MISTAKE believing that!”

“…and I believe, love him or hate him, Donald Trump exposed Washington for what it is. He’s made us see ourselves as well. The idea that many voters choosing him are non-college educated people speaks not to their ability, but to our society!”

“COVID has been a blessing. We have been forced to slow down, see the problems of our world and find new ways to fix them. I cannot wait to share with students the very idea that we are creative enough to get through anything…because we are!”

“Racism. I know this class will look into the power of diversity, but how about the overwhelming power of Racism. That’s a power struggle that we are so afraid to discuss…it scares me.”

“My fear is God gets left out of the equation. …..The US has abandoned the idea of higher power, and morals….what do we expect when we answer to no one?”

“…so tell me this, why would a pandemic ever be political?’

“We must educate our population. We must strive to show them a better way of life. This is a Democracy, a place on many voices. They need informed opinions, not social media posts.’

You can see that there is much on the hearts and minds of these young adults. Follow us through this interesting conversation. It should be enlightening for all sides!

The Digital Premiere of “HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL”

September 19, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Virtual Venue Theatricals, a fully virtual production company, presents the digital premiere of the hit off-Broadway musical, “Heathers”. The show features a cast and production team from across the United States and Canada, assembled together through Zoom rehearsals. “Heathers: The Musical”, based on the eponymous cult-classic 1988 movie, will stream on www.virtualvenuetheatricals.com September 18-20.

While the musical will premiere in a non-traditional environment, audiences should not expect a scaled-back experience. Director and lead actress (Veronica Sawyer) Charity Farrell, a Dayton-native, said of the production, “Nothing is getting trimmed. Every element you expect to see from a full-length musical in a live, stage performance is there, plus additional elements we get to explore in this medium. We are honored to have a creative team that has worked throughout the industry on Broadway and off-Broadway, cruise ships, and worldwide in concert series and events. The level of experience from the production team and cast members coupled with the innovation of this platform is going to be truly exciting for audiences to watch.”

Created in response to theatre shut downs across the country, VVT celebrates the opportunity to produce high-quality performances online and bring together creatives and audiences without borders. Wright State student Nathalie Gibson (costume designer) said of her involvement, “Designing virtually has been such an amazing learning experience as a costume designer. It has definitely given me a new take on this crazy world of theatre, and I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to work alongside this talented cast and crew on this virtual production.”

Interested parties can buy tickets for $15/viewer. The show runs September 18, 19, and 20 at 8:00pm EDT. For ticket sales and more information, visit www.virtualvenuetheatricals.com.

About Virtual Venue Theatricals: VVT is a virtual production company based in Ohio, run by owner/artistic director Charity Farrell and managing director Abby Parr. VVT was founded in 2020 by a group of professional artists as the demand for live performance shifted to a digital medium in order to put performers and production teams to work in a creative capacity and keep the art form of live theatre in front of audiences.

The 26,300 square foot building has 29 double-occupancy rooms with separate living spaces for men and women, group kitchens, a fitness center, meditation room, coffee bar and rooms for individual and group therapy. We are developing a beautiful outdoor space as well, that the Carillon and Edgemont neighborhoods will be proud to welcome into their community.

“OneFifteen Living will give people a safe place to live while they continue their journey of recovery,” said President and CEO, Marti Taylor. “The journey is different for everyone, so we are creating a full continuum of care to be able to meet anyone where they are, to give them what they need to, to live a healthy, sober life.

OneFifteen was launched in 2019 with our partners Kettering Health Network, Premier Health, Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. and Verily, the healthcare and life sciences arm of Alphabet, with support from Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board. OneFifteen is creating a tech-enabled system of care that will offer a treatment center, rehabilitation housing, and wrap-around services, all on one state-of-the-art campus in Dayton, Ohio.

“We are so proud of the work that OneFifteen is doing in our community,” said Helen Jones-Kelley, Executive Director of ADAMHS. “They are addressing a need in our community for housing for people who are moving through their recovery journey. OneFifteen Living will give them a place to live, while they search for career opportunities, and are supported with wrap-around services to give them the best chance for sustained sobriety.”

Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day!

September 18, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s National Cheeseburger day!

There are several theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger which dates back to the 1920s. According to one story, in 1926, Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. At that time during an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

However, like several iconic foods, many people and restaurants claim the origin story. For example, in Los Angeles, a restaurant called O’Dell’s placed the cheeseburger on its menu in 1928. It came smothered with chili. Further, Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims that they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. There is one record that tells the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, CO bragging rights is the trademark that they received in 1935 for the name “cheeseburger.”

Gus Belt was another who applied for the trademark of those words. He was the founder of Steak n’ Shake and sometime in the 1930s, he also applied for the trademark. Despite all claims, one thing is sure that the cheeseburger consists of all the marks that satisfy craving and the cheeseburger is not going anywhere and always be enjoyed not only in America but in several places in the country.
