New Link Stations Added in Carillon and Huffman Neighborhoods

April 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

On May 5th, Bike Miami Valley and Greater Dayton RTA’s program, Link: Dayton Bike Share will launch seven new hubs available in the Link Dayton app. These hubs are designated locations where users can checkout and return bikes. Support from the City of Dayton, CareSource and Five Rivers MetroParks make the expansion possible. The organizations will host a socially distant ribbon cutting at 10:30 AM at Welcome Park to celebrate the expansion.

Huffman Link Station

The City of Dayton, who is supporting the expansion into the Carillon and Huffman neighborhoods, played a critical role in helping Bike Miami Valley and its Link program connect to neighborhood leadership. “Link: Dayton Bike Share has been an amazing resource for keeping our city active and bike-friendly. We see this expansion into Carillon and Huffman neighborhoods as an investment in more mobility options for more Dayton residents,” says Mayor Nan Whaley.

“Bike Miami Valley recently brought a bike to one of our outdoor neighborhood meetings for a demonstration, and I got a chance to try it. I forgot how much I loved biking until I took a spin. We’re looking forward to having Link in neighborhood,” said Carillon Civic Council President Gwen Buchanan.

CareSource will add two new downtown locations and support two existing locations to encourage ridership between their campus-like office buildings downtown. “CareSource is committed to the health and vitality of downtown,” says Dan McCabe, CareSource Chief Administrative Officer and CEO CareSource Foundation. “We’re looking forward to offering our employees a safe, convenient alternative transportation option when they return to the office in person.”

Five Rivers MetroParks is continuing its support of Link with the addition of a location at Deeds Point MetroPark. “As warm weather finally comes and the Deeds Point Bridge reopens—soon!—We’re excited to see the Link network expand to serve more of our community. To be able to travel so much of greater downtown on a Link Bike is convenient, safe, healthy, and, most of all, fun,” says Becky Benná of Five Rivers MetroParks.

To take advantage of the new locations, users can download the Link Dayton app to get riding.

Mint Juleps & Derby Day- A May Tradition

April 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

It has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby for almost a century; according to the website of the annual event, nearly 120,000 juleps are sold at Churchill Downs over the two-day race period. Like most recipes that come from the South, mint juleps have a long and often debated history. It is  widely believed that the name of the drink comes from the Persian word gulab and the Arab word julab, both of which translate to rosewater. The term julep was also used to refer to any type of syrupy mixed drink taken with medicine. As early as 1784, mint juleps were prescribed to soothe aching stomachs and help patients who had difficulty swallowing.  Southerners started each day with a mint julep to protect themselves from mosquitoes and malaria. The drink was so delicious, though, that it became a relaxing beverage, in addition to a medicinal one.
To this day, many enthusiasts insist that a proper julep should be made only with bourbon whiskey. Given that Bourbon County is the birthplace of bourbon whiskey, there is also a strong connection between the mint julep and the state of Kentucky. As early as 1816, silver julep cups were offered as prizes at Kentucky county fairs, early evidence of the states association with the famous cocktail. It iss unclear how exactly the mint julep became the star drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938, but it comes as no surprise that this bourbon-centric cocktail is now celebrated as the beverage of choice at the states most famous event.
Perhaps you’d like to serve some variation on the classic Mint Julep.  Try these:

Royal Thai Spice JulepMay be an image of drink

2 oz. Blade & Bow Bourbon
1 oz. Kaffir Lime Juice
2 basil leaves
10 mint leaves
½ tsp Thai Spice- dash each lemon powder, sea salt, chili powder, ground ginger, mustard seed, clove
1 tsp confectioners’ sugar
Grind spices for 20 seconds in a coffee/spice grinder. Shake all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker & strain over crushed ice in Julep Cup. Top with whole chilis and fresh Mint or Basil & Lime.

Champagne Julep Cocktail

2 oz bourbon

6 mint leaves
1 tsp superfine sugar (or 0.5 oz simple syrup)
4 oz champagne
Garnish: mint sprig

  • In a julep cup, gently muddle the mint leaves and the sugar or simple syrup (if using sugar, also add a few drops of water to help with dissolution).
  • Fill cup three-quarters of the way with crushed ice.
  • Add bourbon and stir very gently.
  • Add more crushed ice.
  • Add champagne.
  • Top the cup with a dome of crushed ice, garnish with a sprig of mint, and serve.

Ginger Mint Julep

2 sprigs of mint
½ oz. simple syrup
¼ oz. lemon juice
2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. ginger liqueur
Sprig of mint and slice of candied ginger for garnish

  • In a mixing glass, muddle the mint and simple syrup.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir thoroughly, then strain into a julep cup filled with crushed ice.
  • Stir gently until the cup is frosted, then top with more crushed ice and garnish with the fresh mint and candied ginger.

Whiskey Smash Cocktail

2 oz bourbon
0.5 oz simple syrup
Half a lemon, cut into wedges
5 mint leaves
Mint sprig for garnish
  • Muddle the lemon, mint, and simple syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice.
  • Add the bourbon and shake until chilled.
  • Strain into an Old-Fashioned glass filled with crushed ice (or a single large cube).
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint, clapped once between your hands to release the aromatic oils.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown of horse racing. It is historically run on the first Saturday in May. First run in 1875, this 1 1/4 mile—or 10 furlongs—race runs on the dirt track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, where it has been held since its inaugural running in 1875.

Only 3-year-old Thoroughbreds can qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Eligible horses compete in the Race to the Kentucky Derby, a series of 35 races around the world. Horses win points for finishing in the top four spots, and the 20 horses with the most points at the end of the series gain entry into the Derby.

When is the 2021 Kentucky Derby?

NOMADLAND Returns + FOUR GOOD DAYS with Glenn Close

April 27, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

This week, we’re holding both TOGETHER TOGETHER and STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET – both of which our audiences are loving. That said, we’re adding a couple titles to the mix. After its “Best Picture” win on Sunday (and because we agree with Frances McDormand that it should be seen on the big screen), we’re bringing back NOMADLAND for a handful of screenings. We’re also going to pepper in some shows of FOUR GOOD DAYS – a new drama about a family dealing with addiction starring Glenn Close & Mila Kunis.

On Friday, we will also open two new films in our Virtual Cinema – a wonderful Icelandic film THE COUNTY as well as ABOUT ENDLESSNESS, the latest film from brilliant filmmaker Roy Andersson.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENT:
Synopsis for FOUR GOOD DAYS: “Emerging from a detox clinic, a young addict must stay clean while living with her mother for the next four days.” Starring Glenn Close & Mila Kunis. In addition to offering this film for a few traditional screenings, we will also have two benefit screenings. See this powerful film on the big screen and benefit FOA (Families of Addicts) at the same time. The 2 Special Screenings are this Friday at 7:00 and Sunday at 1:15. Tickets for these benefit screenings can be reserved by calling Anita Kitchen at (937)329-2865 (or by email at [email protected]). Our few traditional screenings can be purchased on our website or at our box office. Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for NOMADLAND: Winner of 3 Academy Awards – “Best Picture,” “Best Director” & “Best Actress!” “Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.” Inspired by the non-fiction book. Click the image below to visit the film’s official site (where there are several, wonderful Q&As).
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for ABOUT ENDLESSNESS: Available starting April 30! The new film from master filmmaker Roy Andersson! IndieWire says “You give Roy Andersson 76 minutes, and he’ll give you the universe.” “ABOUT ENDLESSNESS is a reflection on human life in all its beauty and cruelty, its splendor and banality. We wander, dreamlike, gently guided by our Scheherazade-esque narrator. Inconsequential moments take on the same significance as historical events: a couple floats over a war-torn Cologne; on the way to a birthday party, a father stops to tie his daughter’s shoelaces in the pouring rain; teenage girls dance outside a cafe; a defeated army marches to a prisoner-of-war camp. Simultaneously an ode and a lament, ABOUT ENDLESSNESS presents a kaleidoscope of all that is eternally human, an infinite story of the vulnerability of existence.” (Magnolia Pictures) This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 72 hour access for $12.
Synopsis for THE COUNTY: Available starting April 30! “After the global success of his Un Certain Regard winner RAMS, director Grímur Hákonarson returns to his native Iceland with another humanist farmland fable. Bitterly funny and deeply affecting, THE COUNTY plays out a timely political allegory against a jaw-dropping natural landscape, aided by a brainy, tenacious anti-heroine and Hákonarson’s dry Nordic humor.
When we first meet Inga (a brilliant Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir, in a star-making performance), she is midwifing a calf, in the middle of another back-breaking day on the small, nearly bankrupt dairy farm she shares with her husband, Reynir (Hinrik Ólafsson). She is one of many hard-working farmers in her region who work under a bureaucratic co-operative that, having fallen out of the control of its farmers, operates as a monopoly, pushing her and her community deep into debt. After Reynir’s sudden and suspicious death, Inga learns the true extent of both her powerlessness and her late husband’s involvement with the co-op’s schemings. With an eye to the future, and with no other option, she aims to chip away at the co-op’s domination…THE COUNTY cuts deep, putting a human face on an all-too-likely conflict, along with suspense, charm, and a touch of Scandinavian zaniness.” (Dekanalog) This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 72 hour access for $10.
Synopsis for THE RACE TO SAVE THE WORLD: “THE RACE TO SAVE THE WORLD is a climate documentary with a uniquely optimistic approach. It follows passionate activists whose single-minded focus is the creation of a sustainable world for future generations. These climate warriors, ages 15 to 72, are in the trenches fighting for a livable future, regardless of the personal cost. Emmy award-winning filmmaker Joe Gantz brings an urgent and intimate portrait of the protests, arrests, courtroom drama, and family turmoil these activists endure as they push for change. The Race to Save The World is an energizing and inspiring call-to-action that inspires viewers to quit waiting on the sidelines and start making their voices heard.” Michael Mann, Author of THE NEW CLIMATE WAR, writes, “There is still time to prevent catastrophic climate change. This powerful film shows how each of us can use our voice and our actions to save this planet from destruction. Watch it and be inspired to make a difference.” This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 72 access for $12

YWCA Opens Huber Heights Campus!

April 27, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

A nearly 20-acre space in Huber Heights is now the newest program location for YWCA Dayton, the oldest multicultural social services organization serving women and girls in the Miami Valley. The 151-year-old nonprofit currently operates six locations across Montgomery and Preble counties.

The YWCA Dayton Huber Heights Campus, located at 7650 Timbercrest Dr., was built in 1980 as
the Montgomery County Developmental Center, which closed in 2018. The property consists of 11
buildings on 19.445 acres, including: seven residential units; a 20,000-square-foot administration
building with community meeting space; and green space with a gazebo, picnic shelter, and trail.

“This was an incredible opportunity,” said Shannon Isom, president and CEO. “We are not out to
grow for the sake of growth; based on our history, based on our relationships, based on the work
we’ve done for more than a century, we’ve been presented with an opportunity to live out our
mission and serve the needs of our community, in collaboration, differently than we ever have
before.

“There are very few agencies that get presented with the ability to create, to be innovative, to build,
to develop, in partnership with others; YWCA Dayton is in a place, and a season, to embrace that.
It’s taken us 150 years to get here, and we’re excited and ready to be agile in meeting the Miami
Valley’s needs for the next 150 years.”

The campus will open in phases, with initial use focused on administrative functions, youth
programming, and community rentals, including long-term small business leases. “Our first priority is to get this right. There are very few organizations that are afforded the opportunity to think about their mission in a way that feeds community,” Isom said. “We have built a task force of local community leaders and stakeholders, from funding to strategic planning tooperations, and the support we’ve received from the Huber Heights community is palpable.”

That includes the property’s first onsite service project – a reflection courtyard and friendship fire ring
– installed in July 2020 by Huber Heights youth Micah and Sarai Combs as their Eagle Scout
capstone. Sarai is a member of the first class of female Eagle Scouts in the Miami Valley; the
siblings’ project, with an in-kind value of more than $4,000, took 26 volunteer hours to complete.

Founded in 1870, YWCA Dayton has been at the forefront of the most critical social movements —
from voting rights and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and
health care reform.

At YWCA Dayton, we:

• Operate the only domestic violence shelters and rape crisis center in Montgomery and
Preble Counties, as well as the area’s longest-running 24/7 crisis hotline: 937-222-SAFE,
which responds to more than 7,000 calls every year.
• Provide affordable housing and support services for women and families who are victims of
abuse or experiencing sudden or chronic homelessness. In 2020, 598 individuals in 291
households were helped by YW housing programs.
• Empower teens to explore and achieve their highest potential through Girls LEAD!, a
signature curriculum of educational and prevention outreach programming, and engage men and boys in preventing violence against women and girls through AMEND Together, an in-
school prevention education program. More than 300 youth were served in 2020.

• Advocate for legislative priorities that address racial justice and civil rights, women’s
economic empowerment, and women’s health and safety. In 2019-20, YWCA Dayton
endorsed 27 pieces of legislation and met with 26 public officials.

CAUTION! – MEN AT WORK…for CLOTHES THAT WORK!

April 23, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

One of Dayton’s most beloved fundraisers is back…and the Men are RED HOT this year! Clothes that Work presents their annual ‘MEN AT WORK’  an online competition featuring local businessmen and community leaders raising funds for the organization.   25 ‘Role Models’ share their story and their professional image for three weeks as they campaign for votes. Every vote is a $5 donation to Clothes that Work. The result is funds raised for a good cause and the Role Model with the most votes is awarded ‘Ambassador of the Year’!

Lagman is the reigning champ!

Last year’s reigning champion, Shawn Lagman shared his feelings about the worthwhile contest. ‘It is awesome to be part of something that helps people who are trying to better themselves.  There is something in helping others overcome adversity that tends to get people involved in making a difference!’ Lagman had some sage advice for this year’s ‘male models.’  ‘Dive in HEAD FIRST!

Talk to everyone about what you are doing. Use your resources, connect through social media. Tell people about the great work CTW does…they will want to help!’ Lagman loved the mission behind the event adding, ‘People feel how they look. Clothes that Work allows people to feel confident!’

CTW Executive Director Cindy Garner

‘Clothes That Work, builds new starts.’ says Executive Director, Cindy Garner.  ‘Proper interview attire can be THE barrier to getting work for some job seekers. A new outfit changes perspectives, builds confidence and creates possibilities for our clients.’   Garner loves the ‘Men at Work‘ event and feels it showcases just how giving the Dayton Community is. ‘It is a fun way to get our message out to the public. We are so hopeful to break all records this year!’   The kick-off party takes place Monday, April 26th at Tender Mercy. ‘The venue is just amazing, and it allowed us to snatch Branden Fugate (TM bartender), a true contender!’  You can watch the event virtually by clicking the Facebook link: https://fb.me/e/29eT9k1RA.

John Capobianco impressed by Dayton community.

Helping lead the charge this year is NYC transplant, John Capobianco. ‘I was so fortunate to be introduced to CTW from a friend in the events business, Nick Warrington. He told me about this contest, and I knew I wanted to be involved.’ Capobianco bring years of events experience with him from NYC, and is impressed by Dayton’s dedication to charitable organizations. ‘Listen, the boutique rivals anything New York has to offer. And the idea that CTW empowers people to grow in self-confidence and self-worth is really fantastic!’  The impressive boutique is located  at 1133 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd., Suite 392 and open Monday – Friday: 10AM to 2PM, Second Saturday of Each Month: 9AM to Noon.

Philip Drennen loves the mission behind the modeling!

‘Men at Work‘ really is about guys giving their time, looks and energy to make a difference. One entry this year, Dare To Defy’s Philip Drennen put it like this, ‘I knew so little about Clothes the Work. When I was asked to participate it went beyond just doing the modeling for this. I am dedicated to doing my part to help people get that interview that could and will change their life!’ Drennen is hoping for a whopping 300 votes, and the title of ‘2021 Ambassador of the Year!’  ‘I am in the entertainment industry,’ Drennen said. ‘We have had to alter our lives during the pandemic, and I know for many entertainers, corporate interviews are a new way of doing things. Clothe that Work will likely be helping some of my entertainment industry friends!’

You can support Clothes that Work by donating some of your own gently used professional clothes. CTW accepts donations by appointment Monday -Friday, simply go to this site.

Human Race Theatre Company Debuts New Streaming Production

April 23, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Human Race Theatre Company is excited to announce that you can experience the magic of local professional theatre from the comfort of your home. Love, time, and starting over is at the heart of Now and Then by Sean Grennan, filmed on location at Dayton’s own Mudlick Tap House, kicking off our 35th season by continuing our tradition of celebrating the best our community has to offer. It will be available exclusively on the streaming platform Broadway On-Demand starting April 28, 2021 – the 35th birthday of The Human Race.

In the face of an unprecedented year, we’ve needed to be more creative than ever before.  “Our timing of this first production marks both our commitment to keeping our artists safe while also celebrating our 35 years as Dayton’s professional theatre company,” states Human Race Artistic Director and Founding Member, Kevin Moore.  “Unlike previous ‘pandemic projects,’ this production is fully staged on location and filmed by another first for us.  This allows us to share our work with our audience while keeping everyone safe until we can return to in-person performances at the Loft Theatre.”   Local production company WorldStage Media did the filming.

The play takes us to a neighborhood bar in 1981 where Jamie is closing up when a last-minute customer enters and offers Jamie and his girlfriend Abby $2,000 to sit and have a drink with him.  Who wouldn’t take it?  But the unusual conversation, and the appearance of a second customer, make the unbelievable begin to look like it just might be true.

Director Marya Spring Cordes has assembled an amazing quartet of actors.  Playing the couple Jamie and Abby are a real-life married couple, Justin McCombs and Maggie Lou Rader. And as the unexpected customers are Human Race Resident Actor and Founding Member Scott Stoney, and local actress Libby Holley Scancarello.

The fifth character in the play is the bar, and we are grateful to Mudlick Tap House for providing the location for our production.  Our Director of Photography, Editor and head of film production is Shaunn Baker of WorldStage Media. Our production Stage Manager is Jacquelyn Duncan. Costume by Janet G. Powell;  Scenic Elements and Props by Alexander Capeneka; Lighting by John Rensel;  Sound by Jay Brunner.

Now and Then will be available on the Broadway on Demand platform from April 28 – May 9, 2021.  Current subscribers will receive an email with their personal link to watch the show.  Single tickets now available at Broadway on Demand by using this link:  https://livestream.broadwayondemand.com/human-race/
