A Riverway Guide to 7 Fall Fun activities in southwest Ohio

September 30, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

What sounds more like Fall to you? Giant Pumpkins, flannel shirts, scarecrows, or viewing the fall foliage from a bi-plane ride? How about all of that and more?

– Wear your best Flannel! You are going to see plaid everywhere in downtown Middletown on October 1st! This First Friday celebration is all about fall comfort. Don your favorite flannel clothes and your favorite beanie. Visit the pumpkin Patch and pick out the best pumpkin to take home. Warm up by the fire and roast s’mores with your friends. For the kiddies there is a pumpkin painting class. The grown-ups can take the spiked cider/cider beer tour at the local bars.

– Gawk at some giant pumpkins. Ok, they are technically giant squash but who cares when they get carved into amazing designs?! The Operation Pumpkin festival in Hamilton runs October 8-10 and has everything pumpkin-related you can imagine! A Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off, pumpkin-flavored treats, a Pumpkin Wall, live music, vendors, a pet parade, and more!

– Get lost in a Corn Maze and ride down Scarecrow Lane. The Fall Farm Fest is held at Lost Creek Reserve in Miami County on October 9-10 amidst tree-lined lanes and colorful foliage. After you conquer the maze, try your hand at shooting corn from a corn cannon. Ready, aim, fire – at a couple different targets. Take a wagon ride or walk the charming farm lane lined with scarecrows created by local business, organizations and families. Take a selfie with the Riverway Scarecrow, and tag us on instagram to win a prize!

– Do your leaf peeping from the sky. You can experience the ride of a lifetime in an open cockpit bi-plane and fly over the colorful fall trees on weekends at the WACO Historical Society in Troy.

– Enjoy some good old-fashioned family fun! The Great Pumpkin Roll Festival is October 16 in Franklin. Wear your favorite costume and bring the kids for trunk-or treat. You will see shows by the Cincinnati Zoo, watch the Great 4th Street Pumpkin Roll, play games, enjoy the food trucks, and find the best one at the pumpkin patch.

– Scary and spooky more your style? Then the highly-anticipated Historic Haunted Theater in Sidney is perfect for you. On October 13-17 and 20-22 you can start with Part 1 – a family-friendly spooking – and then have the option to continue to Part 2 where the true scaring begins. Only want to be a little spooked? Visit Patterson Homestead on October 31 for their All-Hallow’s Eve Tea. Join costumed interpreters for an authentic three-course tea service. Maybe the Patterson’s will join you.

Check out the Great Miami Riverway Events Calendar for more Fall Fun including Sidney’s Boos and Brews Festival, Woodland Cemetary’s History, Mystery, Mayhem, and Murder Tour, and find your way to a pumpkin patch – along the Great Miami Riverway!

Mi Terruño, meaning “my terroir”, is managed by the brother-sister duo of Gabriel Baigorria and winemaker, Maria Eugenia Baigorria. Under Maria Eugenia’s guidance the Mi Terruño wines are driven by the unique expression of their own terroir and embodies their most important treasure, the grapes.

NEON NEWS: FALLING FOR FIGARO & THE GREEN KNIGHT!

September 29, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

Even though we’re holding THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE for another week, we’re adding two new films to the mix. Our first selection is a UK import that has had many audience members swooning – FALLING FOR FIGARO. Our second selection is a film that has already played in this market – but several NEON fans have been asking for it – THE GREEN KNIGHT. Both of these could be gone in a week…so hurry down.

Please remember that our new health and safety protocol starts this Friday!
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Montgomery County Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.  Masks will continue to be required for all guests age 6 and higher until further notice.  Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, all patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-administered tests will not be accepted. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance. Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Some friends recently got back from the East Coast, and one had a solution for an easy way to always have proof of vaccination with you. Take a single picture of your photo ID and your vaccination card in the same shot. You’ll be able to flash this photo at our box office, and that will work as proof enough for us. If you have a smart phone, you could also download the app that most folks in NYC are using to get into movies, Broadway shows and restaurants – NYCCOVIDSAFE. This app will have you take a photo of your ID and your vaccine card – and it saves you from having to hunt for a photo on your phone. I downloaded it, and it’s very easy to use.
Please remember – We ask that you arrive before showtime to allow for checking everyone in before the auditorium gets dark!
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for FALLING FOR FIGARO: “From award-winning director Ben Lewin (THE SESSIONS, THE CATCHER WAS A SPY) FALLING FOR FIGARO follows a brilliant young fund manager named Millie (Danielle Macdonald: PATTI CAKES, DUMPLIN), who quits her job and ends things with her longterm boyfriend in order to fulfill her dream of becoming an opera singer — in the Scottish Highlands. She begins intense vocal training lessons with renowned but fearsome singing teacher and former opera diva Meghan Geoffrey-Bishop (Joanna Lumley – ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS). It is there she meets Max, another of Meghan’s students who is also training for the upcoming “Singer of Renown” contest. The competition between Millie and Max gradually evolves into something different and deeper.” (IFC Films) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for THE GREEN KNIGHT: “An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery (who directed THE OLD MAN & THE GUN – partially shot in Dayton) comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.” (A24) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer. For a fun little video about the background of The Green Knight, click this LINK.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for SURGE: Brilliant actor Ben Whishaw stars in SURGE, directed by Aneil Karia. “Joseph (Ben Whishaw) works in security at a London airport. His life proceeds in an orderly fashion but, in spite of his contact with other people during the course of his job, he seems to be isolated from his surroundings. The anxiety felt by some passengers when they are patted down before check-in and the impersonal atmosphere amongst his colleagues both affect him. After a visit to his parents, something snaps inside this loner and another Joseph comes to light: one who takes what he wants, invades others’ personal space and does not even shy away from criminal acts. Between eruption, escalation and destruction, he undergoes a painful process of self-discovery, the starting point of which is closer than we would like to admit to the actual living and working conditions of many people.” (FilmRise) THE GUARDIAN says that it’s “[A] big pressure-cooker performance from Ben Whishaw.” Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve access. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s Help Page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve access to the film.
To read more about all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema, please visit our WEBSITE. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works.
Our Virtual Cinema is slowing down, but we still want to bring new films now and again that deserve to be seen that you can enjoy from home! (Click titles to watch each film’s trailer.) In October, we’ll have a documentary about how Gospel quartets became the basis for rock’n’roll – HOW THEY GOT OVER. In early November, we’ll have a French-Algerian film about a group of sisters who are searching for their kidnapped brother – SISTERS. On November 12, we’ll start the powerful indigenous story BEANS. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS:
“Take a noir-inspired and surreal trip through L.A. as Max, a failed writer, prepares to leave the city where her dreams died. On Wednesday, October 6th at 7:30, Wright State Film School grad, Trevor Hollen, will be presenting his award-winning feature film debut, EATING CARS – in conjunction with its US and UK release. The black and white film was made in Los Angeles, but most of the cast and crew hail from the Dayton/Cincinnati area and some are also WSU MoPix alumni. After the screening, there will be a Q&A with Trevor. Proceeds will go to the WSU MoPix department.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are available now on our website. Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

The 16th Annual DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL is gearing up to be back in person this year! Though things will be a little different (we’ll go an entire week this year with 2 screenings of each selection so we can spread everyone out), we’re delighted that we can bring the best in LGBT cinema back to the big screen. Our website is now live, and tickets are on sale now! Click the image below to watch the trailer for a documentary about queer women who have written some of Country Music’s biggest hits over the years for stars from Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks to Barbara Mandrell and Reba McEntire – INVISIBLE! You’ll see a lot of recognizable musicians interviewed in this doc – from Emmylou Harris to Linda Ronstadt. A friend told me that there are a lot of connections in this film to the Dayton Women’s Music Collective from Canal St. – for those of you who remember this, please spread the word!

Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery Celebrates First Anniversary

September 27, 2021 By Patrick Thimons

Warped Wing Barrel Room and Smokery, smoked meat and barrel aged beer; these are perhaps the two things I associate most with the season of fall. When I saw that The Warped Wing Barrel Room and Smokery was celebrating their 1 year anniversary this weekend, I couldn’t think of any better way to bring in the season.

Erin O’Neill

For years now, ever since their grand opening, Warped Wing has been Dayton’s beer giant. Their dedication to quality control and branding has been tough for anybody in the state to compete with, let alone the Miami Valley. But something happened a couple years ago when they brought in a guy named Erin O’Neill; Warped Wing became a legitimate foodie destination.

The weather was perfect this weekend, calling for windows down so I smelled the Smokery from down the block, long before I pulled into the parking lot. Walking in the door has a nostalgic feeling to it. Art paying homage to their original location and barrel staves from their barrel aged program line the walls, but I had no time to gander, the smells had me salivating and ready to get straight to business.

I went to the bar and ordered just about every special anniversary offering they had. A flight of the new small batch smoked beers, a flight of tacos, some gumbo and a few sides. The traditional birria tacos were the star of the show. If you’ve never had a traditional birria taco before let me be the first to tell you, you are missing out. Think taco, meets grilled cheese, meets a French dip… but with slow cooked goat meat. These taco shells are first dipped in the au jus from the goat, then loaded with meat and cheese, then cooked on a flat top so that the cheese melts and the shell crisps up. The smell was intoxicating, the flavor was bold and as a result these G.O.A.T. Tacos live up to their name, the greatest of all time.

I did the hatch chile and fish taco as well and I would describe them as very authentic. The fish had the perfect amount of seasoning and char to compliment the sweetness of the mango papaya salsa. The hatch Chile pork had a great verde and hatch Chile combo going on, and I also associate hatch chiles with fall so that was a bonus for me.

Fall is also soup season as they say so I would be remiss if I did not order the gumbo. This is a recipe you can tell Erin has been working on for some time and honestly, it tastes like bourbon street at your feet until the break of dawn. Awesome job nailing this NOLA classic. Perfect brown coloring from a proper rue and you don’t get shorted on the ingredients. White fish, alligator, andouille sausage and shrimp all came together great in this well balanced dish.

You wanna know about the beer? Fine, I’ll tell you. Because I actually haven’t had an experience like this with their beer yet. Something really cool happened when Warped Wing opened up their new location and I think some people might have missed it. They got a small pilot system for interesting trial runs that they haven’t been able to do in the past. We are talking about a brewery that opened originally with nothing smaller than 30 barrel batches of beer (that’s about 10,000 cans) so traditionally they have had to stick to cores with occasional seasonals. Now, they can drop 5 new beers in one day and I’m all the way here for it.

The strawberry watermelon goes was as expected. Sweet, sour and salty. The sticklealt was true to the altbier style, clean and crisp. The Devil’s Candy smoked gose was really interesting. Cherry added a depth and sweetness that went really well with the smoke and the tangerine gave it a little citrus burst, then you still have that sour and salty taste so definitely a lot going on with this one. The s’mores stout was exactly like I left it last year and every year I remember before that, again I think these guys might have written the book on quality control.

The star of the show though for me was by far the Rauchtoberfest Boro Rauchbier. This beer actually gets its Smokey flavor by using malted barley dried over an open flame. In terms of complimenting the food Erin is busting out at this Smokery, I don’t think you could find or create a better beer. I considered getting a growler of it to take home, but ended up taking a couple bottles of one of their classics from the vault, the Grape Must, which I’ll be cracking on thanksgiving.

Five stars to the team at Warped Wing Barrel Room and Smokery. The beer, the food and the ambiance were all not only great, but incredibly unique as well. I’m excited to see what they come up with next.

Dayton at Work and Play: Yetunde Taiwo Rodriguez

September 27, 2021 By Bill Franz

Artist of the Week Yetunde Taiwo Rodriguez of Yetunde Rodriguez Design in her downtown studio.
Yetunde is a graphic artist who will be featured at Rosewood Art Center (2655 Olson Drive) September 27-October 2 as part of this year’s Art on the Commons festival.
Yetunde was born in Nigeria and moved to the U.S. as a teen. She and her family have lived in the Dayton area since 2007. Much of Yetunde’s work is made by block printing using patterns she has carved herself.
She told me that one reason she likes block printing is that each impression is a little different than the one made before. These slight differences add interest and soul to a hand printed piece of fabric. These fabrics then become beautiful bags, pillow cases and other items.

3 Ghost Dinners Scheduled for Amber Rose

September 25, 2021 By Dayton937

October will be creeping up before you know it, and part of the Miami Valley’s haunted past is the AMBER ROSE RESTAURANT!  Each fall Dayton’s ghost enthusiasts get an opportunity to experience a paranormal presentation, along with a 4 course dinner from Amber Rose on Valley Street in Old North Dayton.

The “ParaSense” Investigative Team will share stories, photos, recordings, and even some video they have captured during nights they have spent at Amber Rose.

The daughter of the original owner of the building is said to haunt the main level and upstairs of Amber Rose.  Her name is Genevieve Ksiezopolski, and is also known as “Chickie.”  One of the restaurant cooks claimed to have seen the ghostly spirit of Genevieve aka “Chickie” while cooking one night.   He says the full apparition was in front of him, in a ruffled dress.  She walked into, then out of the room.  Now comes the unexplainable part…. There are security cameras throughout the restaurant including the kitchen.  When the management heard the cook’s story, they decided to pull up the surveillance tape.  What they saw was a small, bright, white orb enter, circle and leave the room at the same exact time the cook said he saw the ghost.

This year the Amber Rose will host 3 night of dinners, each with a different menu.  Guests are asked to book their entire party together and they will be set up at one table for groups of four, six or eight.  In order to keep gets socially distanced, their will only be 10 tables set up each evening.  All guests must be 16 or over. Foodtruck Spotlight: Slide Thru

September 25, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The area’s newest foodtruck, Slide Thru, was launched just last month by Chef Kali Muhammad.  After he was laid off from his job at a catering company, due to the pandemic he  found himself cooking for family and friends as a way to support myself financially, and keep his skills sharpened. “The support that my family and friends provided gave me the inspiration I needed to pursue my dreams and invest in myself. I figured I would do a food truck so that I could pick my business up and take it wherever I needed to go in the instance of another shelter in place order, “shared Kali.
He tells us he “comes from a family of chefs and foodies. I’ve always had a passion for food but my desire to become a chef came from watching my grandfather cook as a child. My grandfather is Italian and his passion for the culinary arts is rooted deep in a culture of some of the worlds best cuisine. From fast food, to very successful catering companies, I’ve dedicated my life to exploring the world of food.”
His food truck, serves a modern twist on classic sandwiches in the form of sliders. His best selling slider is “Da’ Fresh Prince”. This slider is a Philly cheesesteak with fresh cut peppers and onions, topped with provolone cheese and served on a locally baked potato bun.
Oher signature sliders include The Flippin Birdy (chicken, candied turkey bacon, ranch), The Buff’ Chicken (chicken, Frank’s red hot sauce, Monterey Jack) and The Black Betty (southwest black bean patty, fresh pico de gallo, avocado ranch, crispy tortilla strips).
They also offer french fries which you can get loaded or with cajun or lemon pepper seasoning.

We asked him what he wants the Miami Valley to know about him and his food and here’s what he said;

“I want folks to know that true love and passion goes into the food we prepare for you. As a chef, I am dedicated to the process of preparing every ingredient. From brining the chicken we use in our sandwiches, to slow cooking and braising beef that was use in our speciality sliders. My staff has the same passion when prepping ingredients for our food. Their love, time, and focus goes into the process just as mine does. We aim to supply a simple, quickly served, delicious product that has been prepared with true culinary craft. Not only do I love my business and staff, but I love my customers. And I want to continue to bring people together through food as much as I can.”
