September 18th National Cheeseburger Day Deals

September 18, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

We have Lionel Sternberger to thank for his invention of gastronomic genius. Lionel was 16 years old in 1926, flipping burgers inside his dad’s sandwich shop, the “Rite Spot,” in Pasadena, California.  Lionel, out of curiosity, added a piece of American cheese onto a hamburger frying on the griddle.

According to a 2019 report from Technomic, 70% of people would order American cheese on their cheeseburgers, compared to 59% who would order cheddar, 40% who would order Swiss and 39% who would order mozzarella. The default position for most cheese slices is squarely on top of the burger patty. At least, this was a widely held position until people on the internet lost their minds in 2017 when Google’s cheeseburger emoji featured cheese being placed below the patty, spurring a brief but intense internet debate as to the cheese’s rightful place in the burger hierarchy.

Many of your  favorite burger joints are offering deals to celebrate today, so enjoy a cheese burger today!

McDonald’s

The fast food chain McDonald’s is practically synonymous with burgers, so they definitely weren’t going to be left out of the celebration. McDonald’s app users can claim a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents.

Don’t have the app? Download it and join MyMcDonald’s Rewards for a free large fries. After you make your first purchase through the app, you’ll also qualify for your choice of free hash browns, vanilla ice cream cone, McChicken sandwich or a cheeseburger.

Burger King

You can also save some serious cash at Burger King this Saturday. Grab your choice of a Double Cheeseburger Meal, which includes small fries and a small drink, or a Snack Box, with a cheeseburger, medium fries, 10 nuggets and a small drink, for just $3.

Red Robin

There’s one word for this offer: Yummmm! Red Robin will offer buy-one-get-one 50% off on cheeseburgers for all Royalty club members all week. Offer is valid once per day for each member all week through September 19.

Smashburger

Smashburger will have $5 Double Classic Burgers on September 18. Order with cheese and customize with your choice of toppings.

SONIC
Timed perfectly with National Cheeseburger Day on September 18, the SONIC Grilled Cheese Burger is currently available for half price when ordered online or through the SONIC App. This offer is available now through Oct. 31!

Wendy’s

Not to be outdone by its fast food counterparts, the folks at Wendy’s decided to extend National Cheeseburger Day through the whole week, from September 13 – 19, 2021. Take advantage of their buy-one-get-one special and choose any two premium cheeseburgers for the price of one.

If you’re looking for Dayton’s best burger Slyder’s , Lucky’s, Hanks Local, Blind Bobs and Benjamin’s The Burger Master come to the top of the list over and over again, according to Dayton Foodies.

Dayton at Work and Play: The National Park Service

September 17, 2021 By Bill Franz

The National Park Service is restoring the world’s first airplane factory and you can help.
The Wright Brothers built these buildings just off West Third Street to make planes. Eventually the buildings were bought by General Motors and converted to making auto parts. This plant grew to cover 54 acres.
Fortunately, the original Wright buildings were not torn down during this period. They were just surrounded by larger, newer buildings. Manufacturing stopped here in 2008. Since then everything has been torn down except for the buildings connected to the original Wright Brothers Factory.
On October 2nd from 10 to 2 the National Park Service is looking for 15 – 20 volunteers to help remove weeds, put down a weed barrier and then cover it with mulch. Rain date for the event is Saturday, October 9th.
For more information, please contact Robert Petersen at 937-225-7705.

DAYTON LIVE – Vaccinations or Negative Test Required

September 16, 2021 By Dayton937

Dayton Live and its resident companies – Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, The Human Race Theatre Company, and Muse Machine – announced today that patrons attending performances at Dayton Live venues will be required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for entry beginning October 1, 2021, in addition to wearing masks. Health and safety policies will continue to be regularly evaluated and adjusted based on community health data, and public health and government guidance.

Dayton Live owns and operates the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center; the Victoria Theatre; the Metropolitan Arts Center, home to The Loft Theatre; and the PNC Arts Annex; as well as the Arts Garage. Masks will continue to be required inside all venues, in accordance with City of Dayton Mask Mandate.

“Our health and safety policies will continue to be regularly evaluated and adjusted based on community health data, and public health and government guidance,” said Dayton Live President & CEO Ty Sutton. “Based on continuous audience surveys, we know our audiences want us to put additional safety measures in place. This is where we need to be right now – for the safety of our audiences, staff, volunteers, and performers. We’ve been cautious and took a wait-and-see approach before adopting these procedures and requirements. Whether you’re vaccinated or not, regardless of your reasons, we want you to feel welcome to attend any performance in our venues. We simply require proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test.”

Ticket holders are being contacted by the Dayton Live Ticket Office via email with this information and can contact the Ticket Office at[email protected] or 937-228-3630 for more information or to request credits or refunds for tickets.

What documentation is required?

Present your vaccination card or a photo of your vaccination card on your phone along with your ID. Patrons will be required to be fully vaccinated with the Moderna, Pfizer, or Johnson & Johnson vaccine and must show proof of vaccination with valid ID at their time of entry into the theatre with their valid ticket. “Fully vaccinated” means that on the date of the performance, a guest has received their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or their single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, at least 14 days prior.

For documentation of negative test results, make sure the document includes your name and the date stamp – along with your ID. COVID-19 tests must be administered by a third party or a virtual proctor. Self-administered tests will not be accepted. Test results must include name, test result, and timestamp to be considered valid.

Other Safety Protocols

In addition to mandatory vaccinations and mask-wearing inside its venues, Dayton Live has implemented several upgrades and strategies to increase health and safety throughout the venues. These include HVAC upgrades to enhance air filtration and quality, the installation of touchless fixtures in all venues, and enhanced cleaning processes and procedures across all venues.

“The goal of numerous layers of defense is to provide as much protection for our stakeholders as possible,” said Sarah Robertson, Dayton Live Vice President of Operations. “While no single layer is strong enough on its own, together these will all contribute positively to the health and safety of our guests. Requiring vaccinations is the most recent addition to our arsenal against COVID-19, and we hope that our guests will be comforted by it.”

All staff, volunteers, and artists at Dayton Live venues are required to be fully vaccinated and mask up unless performing on stage. Regular testing will also be utilized to ensure that those backstage remain healthy.

Dayton Live will continue to follow the guidance of health and safety officials and will reevaluate these policies as needed in coming months. Patrons are encouraged to visit daytonlive.org/ health-safety for the most current protocols and answers to anticipated questions (FAQ).

10?’s with Casa Núñez Chefs Susie and Iván

September 15, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Susie and Iván Núñez have developed a comfortable blend of international culinary styles that has evolved into the distinctive Casa Núñez flavor. Iván learned the traditional cooking of his native Puerto Rico from his grandmother and his great-aunt. As a young man, he not only owned a successful Mexican restaurant called “Paso Real” in New Mexico, but also placed third in the prestigious Chilympiad in San Marcos, Texas. He later married Susie in Gibraltar and the pair made their first home together in Madrid, Spain.  Through his Air Force Attaché duty at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, the couple began collecting authentic recipes from both Spanish and third-country acquaintances. They had regular reasons to invite a wide variety of guests to the Núñez home for meals and the Casa Núñez entertainment style was born.

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

Casa Núñez favorite ingredient is “Adobo” by Goya.  Adobo adds super flavor in a flash. Just sprinkle any of the different blends over meats, poultry, seafood and vegetables before cooking. You can also use it to punch up the taste of sauces and marinades.  Iván has a bottle in his car to use when we go out to different restaurants.

What ingredient do you dread?

Actually, nothing.  We have included ingredients from around the world and ensure the authentic recipes have the right flavors.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

The Casa Núñez Pavochón.

Roasting a turkey for Thanksgiving in the manner of lechón (suckling pig) has been a tradition in Puerto Rico since the island became an American commonwealth and adopted the holiday. The word Pavochón is a combination of the Spanish word for turkey, pavo, and the word for roasted pig, lechón.  On the Spanish speaking Caribbean islands, the meat of choice for any holiday is roasted suckling pig. It only makes sense to combine the tradition of the islands with an American tradition and serve turkey that is reminiscent of roasted pork for Thanksgiving. This flavor intensive recipe will go over well with the most discriminating of tastes!

Ingredients:

1 head of garlic (cloves separated, peeled, and minced) or garlic powder
1 tablespoon whole black pepper
1 tablespoon oregano
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon cilantro
1 packet Sazón Goya
3 tablespoons Adobo Goya
1 cup Mojo Goya
1 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 14-pound turkey

Preparation:

Mash the first seven ingredients into a paste using a pilón (mortar and pestle). Stir in the Mojo, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar. Rub the mixture under the turkey’s skin, inside the cavities, and on top of the skin.

Stuff the turkey with Casa Núñez picadillo (recipe below).

Roast the turkey, covered with aluminum foil, and according to the manufacturer’s recommended time and temperature. After 2 hours, remove the foil and baste with the pan juices every 20-30 minutes. A 14 to 16-pound turkey will generally take about 3 to 4-1/2 hours to cook to an internal temperature of 160º.

Casa Núñez Ground Beef – Picadillo

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 15-ounce can of chopped tomatoes, drained
2 teaspoons ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground coriander
Adobo to taste
1 packet Sazón
1 teaspoon capers
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ cup quartered and pitted green olives

Preparation:

In a large stainless-steel frying pan, cook the ground beef until it is no longer pink. Remove all the fat; add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables start to soften, about 3 minutes.

Stir in the tomatoes, cumin, coriander, Adobo, Sazón, capers, olives, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool before using as stuffing.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

Our Cuban Sandwich!

Check out our recipe:

Ingredients to marinate the pork:

1 cup Mojo
½ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon Adobo
1 packet Sazón
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
3-4-pound pork loin, trimmed and cleaned

Sandwich:

Dinner rolls (1-2 per person being served), pork, Swiss cheese, sliced ham, mayonnaise, yellow mustard, and hamburger dill pickle chips

Preparation:
Mix ingredients for marinade together and coat the pork loin with it; let it sit for at least an hour, but preferably overnight.  Roast in 425º oven for approximately 2 hours or until a meat thermometer registers 160º at the center. Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes before slicing thinly.  Slice dinner rolls in half lengthwise for sandwiches and spread each half with mayonnaise and mustard, respectively. Cover one side with pork and a slice of Swiss cheese (you may have to trim it so that there is not too much overlap), and the other with a slice of ham. Add dill pickles to taste and enough pieces of pork to cover the other ingredients.  If you have a panini press, follow the directions to press down the sandwiches. If not, heat some butter or margarine in a frying or grill pan and, when hot, place the sandwiches on it close together. Using another frying pan of smaller diameter, as weight, or a spatula, press the sandwiches down as they cook (they should compress to about half of their original height). When the bottom side is lightly browned, flip the sandwiches over and repeat on the second side.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

Pasha Grill in The Greene.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

The world is filled with exciting traditional food; never stop trying new recipes that introduce you to different cultures.

Casa Núñez patio dining

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Casa Núñez will invite our friends Jose Andres (Jaleo in DC), Jose Maria (Segovia, Spain), Jesus (El Mesón del Cid, Madrid, Spain), and Vaso (Alexandra, VA).  Outstanding chefs of international cuisine!

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

We would like to recognize the chefs and assisting staff at the Dorothy Lane Market Culinary Center.  We were invited to conduct cooking classes there about four years ago and we have had the best experiences learning and working with them.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Even though we have a business cooking, we are definitely foodies and like to try out new recipes. Lazy weekends are perfect for antique shopping or movie marathons.  There is always music playing at Casa Núñez, whether it’s recorded or Iván has picked up his guitar to sing. He also paints and draws. Susie is an old-school correspondent who still writes letters to friends for the regular mail and has an average word length of 22 in “Words With Friends”.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Casa Núñez had a wonderful time participating in the Ronald McDonald House Charities fundraiser “Doors Of Compassion”; a real challenge and rewarding first time for us in 2019. Each featured chef was provided with a “basket” of ingredients to make a meal at a hosts’ home. We thought that we had to include each of the ingredients. However, we later found out that different chefs created their own menus, regardless of what was provided. This was after we had prepared a Spanish Tapas meal of 11 different dishes based on what we had been given.

Here’s your chance to enjoy their cooking at a meal they’ll prepare in their home and serve on their patio on Sept. 23rd.

The Dorothy Lane Market cooking classes they mentioned above are:

Oct 8 – Oktoberfest Celebration
The world’s largest festival, traditionally is held in late September and early October (it runs 16 days!) in Munich, Germany. Our German-style celebration is a bit smaller but just as much fun. Join Iván and Susie for this festive celebration of German food, beer, and wine. Bratwurst Sausages with Pretzels and Sauerkraut, German Potato Salad, Oktoberfest Roast, White Asparagus, and German Chocolate Cupcakes.

Dec 10th- Barrel House Cooking

Bourbons, with their wonderfully rich flavor profiles, make them a culinary gem. Just like cooking with wine, Bourbon offers an incredible depth of flavor. With caramel undertones, smokey, and sometimes wheaty notes, Bourbon adds great flavor to both savory and dessert dishes. We’re all familiar with Bourbon balls, and how Bourbon elevates eggnog to greatness, but Iván and Susie will explore a wider range of culinary uses. They’ll explain the nuances of this special barrel-aged libation, such as the importance of only using one you enjoy sipping, and how different styles of Bourbon affect dishes differently. Cajun Sausage Puffs with Bourbon Mustard; Spinach Salad with Bacon, Blue Cheese, and Bourbon Vinaigrette; Bourbon-Glazed Salmon; Bourbon Sweet Potatoes; and Maple-Bourbon Banana Cake. This menu will be served with wine.

City Commission To Vote On Mandatory Masks in Public Spaces

September 13, 2021 By Dayton937

On Wednesday, Sept. 15, the Dayton City Commission will vote on an ordinance requiring that face coverings be worn in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status.
This comes after a recommendation by Public Health–Dayton & Montgomery County asking that municipal governments enact mask requirements after the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
“Case levels in Montgomery County are reaching peaks not seen since January. While we know that vaccinations are incredibly effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths, children under twelve are still unable to receive the vaccine,” said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. “I appreciate my colleagues on the Commission being willing to take this step to protect those unable to be vaccinated, to protect hospital capacity, and to keep businesses open even as we see new spikes in COVID-19 cases.”
“No one likes wearing masks–myself included. But this is a necessary step to keep people in Dayton safe,” Whaley continued. “The last thing any of us want is a return to shutdowns, and masks in public spaces is another way to prevent that.”
The ordinance will require face coverings for anyone 6 years of age or older in indoor spaces that are open to the public. The new ordinance allows exemptions similar to Dayton’s previous mask requirement, including while eating or drinking or while exercising. People with medical conditions, mental health conditions, or development disabilities which restrict or limit their ability to wear a mask, are also not required to wear a face covering.
“Public Health is encouraged that the City of Dayton, local businesses and school districts are taking the protection of their citizens, customers and students seriously,” said Montgomery County Health Commissioner Jeff Cooper. “Due to the lagging vaccination rates in our county, mask wearing indoors is our best defense to stop the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the number of people being hospitalized.”
Enforcement will be conducted on a complaint basis by business owners or employees who are concerned about a member of the public not complying with the mask requirement while inside their location.
Owners or employees should first encourage the member of the public to wear a mask or leave the premises, and if they do not, then call 937-333-COPS to report the concern. Dayton Police will follow up to investigate the complaint and potentially issue a citation. Anyone not wearing a face covering in one of the required situations is subject to a fine of $85.
Members of the public should not confront or report one another. If a member of the public witnesses a person not wearing a mask inside a business, they should report that to a manager for a response.

Check out the PORTOPIA Art Exhibit in Middletown

September 13, 2021 By Dayton937

Portopia is Ohio’s newest immersive art exhibit that includes collective work from 14 artists who have altered over 5,000 square feet with powerful, visionary art.

Opening in historic downtown Middletown in the Torchlight Pass building (1131 Central Ave), Portopia is the vision of a group of over 15 community stakeholders committed to spurring economic development and creating space for nontraditional art. Visitors will experience dimensional art that titillate the senses of sound, sight, smell, touch, and even taste. The unconventional exhibit also includes 14 hidden “portal gems” for discovery and 3 portal doors for decoding that lead to unexpected surprises. Portopia is a temporary show that will appeal to guests of all ages and will runs through  December 19, 2021.

“The overarching goal was to leverage Middletown’s long commitment to the arts and create an unexpected experience that can be enjoyed by all ages,” said Mary Huttlinger, executive director of the Middletown Visitors Bureau and project manager. “We wanted to create a sustainable concept that could be repeated annually with a different team of artists, keeping the experience fresh and relevant.”

The immersive experience is more than just painting on the walls. Guests will encounter fun passageways, video displays, puzzles to solve, and interactive components. Each room presents the visitor with an entire new experience to discover and enjoy. The time-ticketed event limits the number of guests each hour to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience.

“Portopia’s foundation is built on private-public partnerships and is a terrific example of an opportunity that offers multiple benefits to the community. The City of Middletown was an early adopter of this initiative and we are eager to support its success,” said James Palenick, Middletown City Manager.

Many of Portopia’s artists hail from southwestern Ohio yet some have roots from as far away as New York, California, and New Jersey. All of them have collectively worked together to conceptualize and execute the first iteration of what is hoped to be a many year, recurring exhibit.

According to Roscoe Wilson, Portopia artist and Professor of Art at Miami University, “Participating in Portopia was a terrific opportunity because we (the artists) had the freedom to create our own vision. It is rare to work on a project that encourages unencumbered artistic expression. Also using existing materials in the space allowed me to expand my practice into a new direction.”

Challenge your senses at Portopia – September 11, 2021 – December 19, 2021 in Middletown, Ohio. More information and tickets available at: www.Portopia.org

ZZ Top To Rock The Rose

September 13, 2021 By Dayton937

ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. For 51 years, the band comprised vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and vocalist-bassist Dusty Hill, until Hill’s death in 2021. Rooted in blues, ZZ Top developed a signature sound based on Gibbons’ blues guitar style and Hill and Beard’s rhythm section. They are popular for their live performances, sly and humorous lyrics, and the similar appearances of Gibbons and Hill, who were rarely seen without their long beards, sunglasses, and hats.
