The National Fallen Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

September 4, 2021 By Dayton937

The NFFF 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on September 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of a FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic  journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows we will never forget.

Corner Kitchen to Reopen With New Owner

September 3, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The One Esca Group, a restaurant management company based in Dallas, Texas, owns and plans to operate Corner Kitchen. The One Esca Group, currently owns and operates the Spaghetti Warehouse located at 36 West Fifth Street in downtown Dayton so they are familiar with Dayton and region. They’re very excited to expand their presence through the acquisition of Corner Kitchen, which will be its own unique and very special addition to the greater Dayton restaurant scene.  According to PR Rep Chuck Vella, on opening timeline,  “It will be some months away.”

They will retain the name and Jack and Natalie Skilliter, founders and former owners, will be consulting with them for a transition period. They will retain some of Jack’s and Natalie’s offerings, however, they will also add new items to the menu, to the bar, and we will also make some changes to the floor plan. They will be changing the dining experience to create their own vision.

They are also keenly aware of the great things that are happening in downtown Dayton and the region. For downtown, a renaissance, if you will, that will make Dayton and an even more attractive entertainment and dining center. They see this move a great opportunity and it is their intention to add to the vibrancy of the region.

The One Esca Group is a restaurant management company based out of Dallas, TX.  The group owns and manages over 18 million dollars in annual sales with assets located in Texas and Ohio. The company is multi-unit/multi-concept operator which runs concepts spanning from Irish Pubs and Steakhouses to Chicago-style Pan pizzas. The portfolio includes 3 Spaghetti Warehouses (meatballs.com), 2 Blackfriar Pub (Blackfriarpub.com), Anju Asian Street Food (theanju.com) 2 Sugarbacon (Sugarbacon.com), 2 Dog Haus (Doghaus.com), Taste of Chicago (addisontasteofchicago.com), Corner Kitchen (Dayton), and a Mad for Chicken (madforchicken.com) location.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth welcomes hundreds of thousands visitors to Harveysburg in northern Warren County to experience the old, new, and unique that bring the Ohio Renaissance Festival to life. This year festival organizers are excited to welcome visitors back to the village and what a festival they’ve prepared!

The festival features a handful of new entertainment spanning death-defying feats to ‘rockin’ Irish music’.

  • The Free Lancers bring hard hits and thrilling action to the Guinness Arena of Champions three times each day.

  • Cincinnati Barbarian is an armored combat group featuring fights with real armor, real weapons and real combat!
  • Weaving comic wit and impressive feats of escapism, fire artistry, and the supernatural, Johnny Phoenix is the Danger Comedian.
  • Valkyrik is a high-energy, fantasy music act built on themes of war and battle from the Norse/Viking.
  • Robert the Barrrd performs solo songs Olde and New and is a portrayer of villains most dastardly, and heroes most cunning.

Dayton at Work and Play: Dana L. Wiley

September 3, 2021 By Bill Franz

The Dana L. Wiley GALLERY is beautiful. It looks like a place you’d find as you wander around the streets of San Francisco or New York.
I sat down with Dana at the conference table in the gallery’s office and asked about her journey from working artist to gallery owner.
“I still do make my own art” she told me “but I haven’t exhibited in the gallery yet. A few years ago I agreed to curate a show and I loved it. I loved meeting with the artists, I loved deciding how to put the various art pieces together and I loved being around the art all day.”
“I talked with artist Gary Hinsche about the idea and the two of us decided to open up this gallery. This space here is great. We have room for Gary’s studio and this office and lots of room to show art.”
Our last exhibition featured four artists from across the country. Now we’re showing a local artist, Mike Elsass, but we’re showing him in a way that’s different from the way Dayton people have seen his work before. People should stop by tonight during First Friday and have a look.”

Tippapalooza Music Fest Is Saturday

September 1, 2021 By Dayton937

To celebrate our 10th year we made an effort to bring back fan favorites who have played our festival to great success and helped to build the event into what it is today. Our headline act is Tippapalooza favorites Seth Canan & the Carriers returning for their third appearance on our stage. The Neo American Pioneers will be back for a repeat of their stellar 2018 performance. Sadbox will be bringing their raucous brand of rock and roll to Tippapalooza for a second time. And although The Boxcar Suite will be making their first appearance, their leader Tim Pritchard, is a veteran of our festival having played here in 2018 as a member of Shrug.
