In Good ‘Company.’

March 18, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

There’s a big basketball thing happening, and there is green beer a’plenty this week/end. Mixed in all the Hoop-La is a fun, poignant, respectable version of Sondheim’s COMPANY at the PNC Arts Annex. TheaterLab Dayton‘s enchanting stroll down the ins and outs of relationships has some real ‘moments’ that only live theater can provide. Centered around the internal conflict of ‘Bobby, Bob, Robert’ (Bobby Mitchum should be beaming about his performance as the lead!) and his desire to just feel something with someone, we meet some truly endearing couples…you’ll pick your favorite of the bunch, maybe the one you relate to most!

The show, odd for a Broadway Musical, really is about everyone and everybody, and nobody and nothing. The first act sets us up for what is to be the path to self-realization that nearly all of us face at one time or another. The energy of the show truly ‘builds’ throughout. Sondheim’s purposeful meandering between ‘happiness. craziness, and longing’ in relationships is a ride…so, relax and GO! The energy ‘pops’ when the maniacal Amy (Kara Hancock) gets to ‘Not Getting Married Today…’ an anthem for the ages. Her soon-to-be? husband, Paul (Joshua Silver Hughes) desperately seeks to save the day, and through it all Bobby watches as yet another ‘version of the ideal couple’ bounces recklessly down the aisle?? Hmmmmm.

Before we get there, we get to know the floundering other couples….the competitive neurotics, Sarah and Harry (played giddily by Allie Haines and Garrett Young); the ‘perfect couple,’ Susan and Peter ( played with complete charm by Danielle Ruddy and Derick Latimer), ; the drunk and do-gooder, Joanne and Larry, (brought to life with convincing chemistry by Lindsay Sherman and David Moyer), and the staid and plain Jenny and David ( solidly played by Abby Hoggatt and Philip Drennen ***Sidenote, Hoggatt’s voice in ‘Not Getting Married…’ is not to be forgotten!)

And, there are the girlfriends (Rachel Hertenstein, Brooke Cierra & Jackie Randall)  that pop in and out and bring to life  ‘Another 100 People & You Could Drive a Person Crazy….’ as well as pepper the plot with more trouble and tribulation for Robert.

The Second Act really picks up the pace and we dive through Bob’s ‘headwinds.’ ‘Side by Side by Side/What Would I Do‘ has moments where a solid wall of beautiful voices resonate in the theater! Bravo! And through it all, we just keep rooting for LOVE…be it in ‘Barcelona‘ or at a cocktail party thrown by the ‘ladies on their own behalf.’ All roads lead to the subtle yet impactful ending….on the tail end of the quintessential  ‘Being Alive.’ (That song still grips the heart!)

Directed by Mackensie King, with a sort of relaxed, casual appeal, you can see she trusts her cast. King sets a tone, and the cast moves forward with it! King put it like this, ‘This cast is beyond talented. Each one has really taken the time to dig deeper into their scenes, and figure out how their characters relate to the others.’

And the audience will connect…as Moyer put it ‘Through the laughs and the tears, I hope the audience finds that many times there is perfection in the imperfections.  We don’t all fit the same mold, or follow the same rules.  Your happiness is what you make of it, and ultimately finding that happiness is up to you, no one else.’

‘It feels like people-watching because you are getting a glimpse into the idiosyncrasies of other people’s relationships. We can nitpick at the things we think are crazy or endearing or loving, but really we all have them, and none of us in our relationships are perfect, and there’s beauty in that.’ Latimer added.

COMPANY delivers, sometimes boldly, other times with more fragility….but I guess that’s love after all!

Dayton at Work and Play: Brian Mathus

March 18, 2022 By Bill Franz

Brian Mathus has a solo exhibition at Kettering’s Rosewood Gallery (2655 Olson Drive) March 14 through April 22. The show is called “The expectation of being seen.” An artist’s reception Saturday from 1-3 pm is open to the public.

To read more about Brian, check out this interview from Dayton Artists United:

DAU: OK, Brian Mathus, tell me about yourself.

BM—Well, let’s see. Fun fact. I’ve lived on both sides of the country. I lived in Virginia from the time I was 2 until I was 17, then I moved to Portland.

DAU–Portland Oregon?

BM: Yep. And it’s just like you imagine it. It’s where I found my peeps, people like me. It’s so creative there, and everybody is doing their own thing. They have this guy out there that rides a unicycle in a Darth Vader mask.

DAU—I’ve seen the video!

BM-I lived in Portland until I was 30, and then moved to Dayton.

DAU: Where you became an artist?

BM–I think I was always an artist. I just didn’t know how to be one. I made my first work when I was 17. It was a large-scale work called “crabs in a barrel.” I didn’t know how to stretch a canvas, so I just stapled it to the wall. I gessoed it and got gesso all over the floor. When it came time to take it down it was gessoed to the wall. It actually came off with pieces of the wall on the back.

Years later I worked a frame shop and this woman who worked there help me stretch it into a frame. She complained the whole time about how “this wasn’t how you were supposed to do this.”

DAU—where is it now?

BM—I think it might be at my parents.

DAU—And you’ve been painting ever since? How many works do you think you’ve created?

BM—I don’t know. Over a 1000? I’ve started taking pictures of my work. I’ve sold some, maybe 70 pieces, that I never made a record of.

More of the interview here.

WSU Theatre Presents SWEET CHARITY

March 17, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Wright State Theatre presents the swingin’ 1966 dance musical, Sweet Charity, March 18-April 3rd in Wright State University’s Festival Playhouse. This reimagined production brings audiences into the last stages of rehearsal for a 1960s theatre company doing their final run-through of Sweet Charity. Directed by Associate Professor Marya Spring Cordes (Wright State’s The Wolves, Curious Incident…), Music Directed by Instructor F. Wade Russo, choreographed by guest artist Brandon Kelly, with Scenic/Costume design by Instructor Zoe Still, and Lighting Design by Professor Matthew Benjamin, Sweet Charity offers audiences a rare look at one of the great musicals of that era in a fresh new production.

Brandon Kelly

Guest Choreographer Brandon Kelly is an accomplished alumnus of Wright State’s BFA Dance program. Area audiences may remember him from numerous WSU Dance Concerts, Festival Playhouse productions of West Side Story and Raisin In The Sun, and for his choreography of our production of Rent. He is now Assistant Choreographer for Broadway’s Come From Away and has created works for numerous national dance companies, themed entertainment and regional theatre productions. Throughout this process, Kelly has travelled back and forth to Wright State University in between rehearsing actors to join the Broadway and touring productions of Come From Away during the recent surge in COVID illnesses all Broadway and touring shows have experienced. About working on this legendary dance musical, Kelly says, “It’s fantastic and terrifying at the same time, because it’s so iconic and so many of the numbers have a huge legacy. There’s a balance I want to find between being true to the characters and to the story and paying homage to the idea of the original production. I know audiences can’t help but want to see certain shapes, certain feelings, certain visuals. I want to do that while still maintaining my choreographic voice and our vision for the production.”

Instead of a traditional orchestra, Music Director F. Wade Russo has created special orchestral and vocal arrangements to help the show feel as if it’s played by a Jazz combo with four vocalists providing accompaniment in a style reminiscent of iconic artists like Lambert, Hendrix and Ross, The Manhattan Transfer or the Swingle Singers. Russo says, “SWEET CHARITY captures the sounds and rhythms of Greenwich Village jazz clubs of the early 1960s. I wanted to create a vocal quartet to enhance the jazz combo sound of the score using close harmony and back-up singing to give dramatic richness to this production.”

Director Marya Spring Cordes has reimagined Sweet Charity to encourage audiences to focus on the story, characters, music and dance in ways most other productions don’t. She says, “It surrounds a character who goes through life on gut instinct. Sometimes her choices pan out, a lot of times they don’t. But her name says it all – Charity Hope Valentine. The play is about how we transcend difficulty in our life, have resilience, persevere, and believe that some good will come of our lives if we keep putting energy in a positive direction.”

Senior Musical Theatre major, Tassy Kirbas, steps into the iconic dance shoes of protagonist, Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist in a hard-luck world. Tassy says, “My favorite element of our production of Sweet Charity is the amount of collaboration, experimentation, gentleness and openness in the rehearsal space while we develop a new version of such an iconic musical that is completely unique to Wright State University. I am feeling warm, full and happy with our Sweet Charity and I can’t wait to share my passion with live audiences!” Audiences will remember Kirbas from her earlier productions at Wright State, including The Addams Family, Theory of Relativity, Mamma Mia! and many student productions.

For tickets, go to www.wright.edu/tdmp or call the Theatre Box Office at (937) 775-2500

Crafted & Cured Announces New Location

March 15, 2022 By Dayton937

Crafted & Cured, Dayton’s purveyor of premium craft beer, artisanal meats and cheeses, today announced it will open a new location in the iconic First National Bank building in downtown Troy.

The new Crafted & Cured location will offer a full-service retail shop and restaurant selling craft beer, boutique wines, cured meats, artisanal cheeses and champagnes. Customers may purchase items to-go or for dine-in service in the historic landmark.

“In 2016, we opened Crafted & Cured to create a customer experience of delicious artisanal items married with a historic, unique atmosphere,” said Christian Alvarez, co-owner, Crafted & Cured. “When given the opportunity to extend that customer experience to Troy in a setting unlike anything else in Ohio, we knew this was the right place for us.”

Alvarez and co-owner Andy Routson plan to use the 11,900 square foot of space to expand on the experience customers knew and loved in their Dayton location. The site will have a full liquor license and offer bourbon and cocktails. Routson and Alvarez will grow their craft services to include in-house cheeses, cured meats and more. Later phases of the expansion include plans for catering and on-site community events.

The co-owners anticipate hiring a crew of 20-30 team members at the new location and are already seeking candidates for full-time managerial positions, charcutiers and bartenders. Interested candidates can apply by email at [email protected].

Located at 8 South Market Street, Crafted & Cured will be a welcome addition to Troy’s growing downtown restaurant and business scene when it opens later this year.

“Crafted & Cured is a natural, strong addition to Troy’s historic downtown,” said Wade Westfall, Four Sons Development site developer. “Given its proven record of creating a memorable, unique and delicious experience for customers in Dayton, I look forward to Crafted & Cured being a similar destination for visitors and residents in Troy.”

Alvarez and Routson closed their downtown Dayton location in mid-2020 amid the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the duo planned to relocate to the Dayton Arcade, they ultimately decided the Troy development was most viable for the immediate future.

“We love Dayton and are deeply grateful for all the support the community has shown us,” said Routson. “We are excited for this next chapter, and we are still committed to being part of the Dayton community and finding a new home in downtown Dayton.”

EMI Nashville’s Brothers Osborne announced today additional dates on their headlining “WE’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE” TOUR. The GRAMMY-nominated duo will stop in Huber Heights, OH for their first ever performance at Rose Music Center at The Heights on Friday, August 26.

Two sons from a working-class family, John and TJ Osborne grew up in a small, Maryland water town writing and playing songs for friends and family in their father’s shed. John moved to Nashville first to play in other bands and two years later, TJ joined him. It was then they formed Brothers Osborne as a duo that blends equal parts country and rock into one of the freshest, most identifiable sounds to come out of Nashville in recent years. The singer/songwriter siblings took home their fourth Vocal Duo of the Year trophy at the 55th Annual CMA Awards, in addition to being named ACM Duo of the Year twice. Overall Brothers Osborne have collected five CMA and five ACM trophies and stand as nine-time GRAMMY nominees – including vying for Best Country Album (Skeletons) and Best Country Duo/Group Performance (“Younger Me”) at the upcoming 64th GRAMMY Awards. Additionally, they received the ASCAP Vanguard Award in 2019 recognizing artists whose innovative work is helping to shape the future of music.

Brothers Osborne released a deluxe edition of their third studio album, Skeletons, on January 21. Originally released in October 2020, Skeletons features their current single “I’m Not For Everyone,” as well as their Top 25 hit “All Night.” Included on Skeletons Deluxe, “Younger Me” was released in April as a response to the overwhelming support TJ received after sharing his personal story. John and TJ wrote and produced the track, with Kendell Marvel serving as an additional co-writer. Initially breaking through with their debut album Pawn Shop, the Gold Certified project featured three GRAMMY-nominated tracks including the 2X Platinum Certified No. 1 smash hit “Stay A Little Longer,” Top 10 Platinum Certified hit “It Ain’t My Fault,” and Gold Certified Top 25 hit “21 Summer.” Their sophomore album, Port Saint Joe, was nominated for Best Country Album at the 61st GRAMMY Awards and includes the Top 40 GRAMMY-nominated singles “Shoot Me Straight” as well as “I Don’t Remember Me (Before You).”

Brothers Osborne are currently on their WE’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE TOUR, hitting over 50 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Dallas, Atlanta and more. Brothers Osborne has previously toured with Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert and more. 10 ?’s with Sueno’s Executive Chef Jorge Guzman

March 13, 2022 By Dayton937

Jorge Guzman is a partner and executive chef at the contemporary Mexican restaurant Sueno, in downtown Datyon.  He also spends time in  Minneapolis- running his  restaurant Petite Leon, for which he recently nominated for a prestigious James Beard award for Best Chef, one of the highest honors in the culinary world.  This is his 3rd nomination.

Born in Mexico City and raised in Mérida and the Yucatán,  before relocating to  Missouri when he was five.  He spent  summers  in Mérida, surrounded by his grandmother, aunts and cousins around the big family table, give him a deep connection to the region and its cooking traditions. “It’s hard to convey the emotion I have for Mérida over written word. It is my home.”

Jorge recently made time to answer our standard Chef 10 questions:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

I don’t have a favorite ingredient to cook with but I find vegetables to be more complex and enjoyable to cook with. You can do so much with vegetables and the choices are endless.

What ingredient do you dread?

I don’t really dread any ingredient but I really hate pealing shrimp for some reason.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

Right now my favorite dish to make is Frijol con Puerco. Its a traditional pork and bean stew from the Yucatàn. I grew up eating it and I really love cooking it. The smells and flavors really remind me of home.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

I have a major sweet tooth! In Minneapolis we have a bakery thats about 2 blocks away from our current home called Black Walnut. I can’t walk out of there without a box full of pastries for me and the family.

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I really don’t get out much when I’m here because I’m working most of the time but if I can snag a sandwich from Grist its always a treat, as well as their focaccia bread . . .so good.

Focaccia from Grist

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Be ok with failing and with being scared to try something new.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

My wife’s brother, he died 6 years ago and I never got the chance to meet him

My sister who passed away shortly after birth before I was born, i think it would have been great to have an older sister

My best friend Scott who passed away while we were in college, we were supposed to take this culinary journey together and I think he’d be proud of me, to see how far I’ve gotten

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

There are quite a few chefs and operators that I look up to in the industry.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Really love hiking, there are some really great spots here.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

I think getting the job at Surly (Surly Brewing in Minneapolis) was a really amazing thing for me. It finally gave me a platform to show people and the industry what I was capable of. I’m thankful for that I had the opportunity to work there at the time that I did.
