Dayton at Work and Play: The Sunflower

March 6, 2022 By Bill Franz

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine, and it’s become a symbol of solidarity during the Russian invasion. Sunflowers can self pollinate, but bee pollination is helpful to sunflowers – especially in times of stress. My image of bees on a sunflower symbolizes helping the people of Ukraine.
My friend Julie Riley of Julie Riley Art found a way to help the people of Ukraine during this time of stress. She auctioned off a painting called “Sunflowers of Hope” and sent the $1,000 she raised to a nonprofit in Moldova that is helping women and children who are fleeing from Ukraine. If you’d like to give money to support that nonprofit go to https://stellasvoice.org/ukraine
Yesterday my wife and I donated money to the Lutheran World Relief effort to support refugees from Ukraine with food, shelter and medical care. You can donate at https://lwr.org/
Catholic Relief Services, UNICEF, Amnesty International and many other nonprofits have also rushed in to help. If you donate any amount of money to any of these groups, I’d like to send you a signed 8X10 print of this image at no charge.
I’ll print up to 50 copies of the photo and send them to those who have donated. Just email me at [email protected] and tell me you’ve given money to help Ukraine and tell me your address so I can send you a print.

The Renaissance of a ‘Treasure’ Trove!

March 4, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

‘Oh My God….there are actually 4 seats at the bar!’ The voice rings out in the room filled with red leather rolling chairs, a cast of regulars, and a beloved bartender, Grace. ‘It’s really like finding a treasure!’ says the lady before plopping down with her husband and another thankful couple.
If you know Treasure Island Supper Club, tucked ever-so humbly at 4250 Chief Woods Lane in Moraine, you know seats at the bar are a premium. And be aware, there are folks who know those seats quite well, and have sat in them for decades!

The storied restaurant, known for its nautical decor, is having a moment….or perhaps it always has. Stepping into the space is the perfect blend of ‘what was’ and ‘what is’…and, oh, the sunken bar, still sought by ‘never-been-theres!’ That bar always brings a smile! ‘That’s amazing!’ Said one recent friend of mine, a virgin to TI. ‘I can’t believe I have never set foot in this place.’ he goes on…and it is hard to believe for someone who has roots in Dayton for over 40 years now. People don’t know what they are missing.

We sit, and Grace (aka Gracie), who too many is the face of Treasure Island, quickly grabs us a cocktail and sets down a menu. I have seen it 1000 times, but for some reason, I still have to remind myself, look to the right for the daily specials. As I am perusing the night’s food choices, all sounding yummy,

my Maker’s and soda comes…and it’s a right-sized cocktail! (Thank You TI!)

I have favorites at Treasure Island. I think the pickerel on Tuesday always hits the mark; Monday’s broasted chicken is some of the best and I have never had a salad there I didn’t like. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what many hold near and dear…the CRACKER BASKET, with BUTTER! Talk about indulgence. For many of my closest friends, Treasure Island is a ‘go-to’ because you can rest assured you won’t leave hungry! To-Go boxes are plentiful at TI!

If the bar is packed, and it usually is, the dining room and it’s ornate tables, is a great place to chew and chat. The waitresses, who folks know and love, are fun-loving, know the menu and are not afraid to make suggestions (which is helpful!). They love a joke, a story or just a ‘It’s good to see you.’ Eat there twice, and believe me, you will feel that ‘belonging’ many folks speak of.
I’ve been coming to TI since I first taught school just down the street off of Dryden. After-school, we would head there for a quick cocktail and it has always been consistent….consistently satisfying!

Dayton has a love of supper clubs…think about it! Oakwood Club, Pine Club, Paragon, etc….and each of them has their own air, their own atmosphere. Treasure Island has exactly what it needs! Great food, super service, cocktails of size and LOYAL guests. That’s GOLD!

I, like many, don’t want the secret of Treasure Island getting out…it’s one of the best-kept in the area. But, truth be told, Treasure Island is one that needs to be shared. They deserve the praise they receive (see their Facebook Reviews) and the devoted fans who have shown up for decades. Go, discover the GEM that is Treasure Island!

Banquets and Parties Welcome.
They are Closed on Sundays.

Local musician Mike Bankhead releases new single “Hold the Wick”

March 4, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Talented local rock musician, Mike Bankhead, is releasing a new single this month called “Hold the Wick” with a whopping 7 remixes, all of which are in different genres/styles. He plans to release them all together digitally, with each remix accompanied by a music video.

Mike Bankhead is a bassist and songwriter from the Dayton, Ohio area. His songs feature crunchy guitar, occasional dissonance, and love of hooks.

His newest work, “Hold the Wick,” was recorded and mixed in just one day at ReelLove Recording Company here in Dayton.

“I really wanted to work with other musicians and put a project around the single, so I commissioned seven remixes, each one in a different style,” Bankhead shared with us. “Remember the CD-singles from the 90s where you would buy a single, but the disc would have some additional songs on it? That’s the feeling I wanted to capture here.”

Each of the collaborators who worked on the remixes received the same song building blocks – and each person had the freedom to create whatever they wanted to create with those pieces. “I hope that listeners also look into the other work from each of the 7 creative individuals who did remixes.”

The new single “Hold the Wick” debuts on Bandcamp on March 4th, which is also a “Bandcamp Friday” – a day when musicians make their full payment on any music purchased.

The single will be released on all other streaming services by March 15th. That is also the date Bankhead will appear on WUDR Flyer Radio and his music video will premiere on YouTube.

Find out more about Mike and his music at his website: MikeBankheadMusic.com

WYSO Helps Build Statewide News Service

March 3, 2022 By Dayton937

WYSO is one of seven public radio stations across Ohio that will collaborate to create and operate The Ohio Newsroom, which launches today.

The Ohio Newsroom will be the state’s largest daily statewide radio and digital news service, thanks to a two-year, $375,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The funds were awarded to Ideastream Public Media, the organization managing The Ohio Newsroom, and will help support the implementation of the service, including leadership, governance, staffing and content development. In addition, WYSO and its partnering statewide public radio stations are now conducting a nationwide search for The Ohio Newsroom’s first managing editor.

Every public radio station that broadcasts NPR in Ohio is invited to join The Ohio Newsroom. In addition to WYSO, these stations have signed on to participate in and contribute to the collaborative news service: Cincinnati Public Radio, Ideastream Public Media (Cleveland), WCSU (Wilberforce, Ohio), WGTE (Toledo, Ohio), WOSU Public Media (Columbus, Ohio) and WYSU (Youngstown, Ohio).

“WYSO has tripled its reporting staff in the last couple of years, becoming a leading source of local and regional news as well as content that has statewide significance,” said Luke Dennis, WYSO general manager. “We are eager to bring our expertise and vision to the table and to work with all of these public radio newsrooms to shape, contribute to and benefit from this service.

Future Ohio Newsroom reporting can be found on The Ohio Newsroom page on WYSO’s website.

Wendy Turner

Wendy Turner, Ideastream Public Media’s first general manager of Ohio public media services, is leading The Ohio Newsroom in addition to managing The Ohio Channel and the Ohio Public Radio and Television Statehouse News Bureau on behalf of all Ohio public television and radio stations. Turner is also part of Ideastream Public Media’s executive leadership team. Prior to joining Ideastream Public Media, she served as the general manager of WKSU public radio in Kent, Ohio.

Turner is responsible for hiring staff for The Ohio Newsroom with full consultation from the newsroom’s statewide station partners. Staffing begins with securing the newsroom’s managing editor. A national search is taking place to find the right candidate to fill this integral position. Job seekers can find information about the managing editor role and apply online at https://www.ideastream.org/about/careers. Additional positions will be added to The Ohio Newsroom as its implementation continues.

Turner said, “Securing The Ohio Newsroom’s first managing editor, and later, more reporters, will mean more in-depth stories, expanded digital content and even better statewide coordination on breaking news.” She added, “Ohio’s public media organizations have a long history of collaboration. We look forward to continuing this tradition of successfully serving Ohioans through The Ohio Newsroom.”

For years, the partner stations have worked together to share collaborative content initiatives and reporting that are relevant to a statewide audience. The Ohio Newsroom expands their ability to continue with this important work in a cohesive, strategic manner. Examples of past collaborative projects include “Learning Curve” and “Justice Matters.” The partners are also working on a new collaborative editorial project that will launch this spring — the first content initiative that will be released under The Ohio Newsroom.

Plans for The Ohio Newsroom began in July 2019 as a concept for developing a statewide news collaborative, with a $70,000 grant from The George Gund Foundation to conduct consumer research. In October 2020, Ideastream Public Media, Cincinnati Public Radio and WOSU Public

Media announced that they had been awarded a $56,500 grant from CPB to develop a business plan and a sustainability model for the collaborative. Then, as plans were further solidified among Ohio’s public radio stations, CPB awarded the project $375,000 in October 2021 to begin the collaborative’s implementation.

Said Dennis, “These funders have made it possible for public radio stations in Ohio to become an even more valuable source of unbiased news and information. WYSO is grateful for their support.”

Little Women: the Musical

March 2, 2022 By Dayton937

In this adaptation, four actors in an attic retell Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel. Using found objects from across time (balloons, hula hoops, ribbon dancers, and more), the players create scenes of love, loss, and the ever glowing warmth of the March family hearth. Jo goes on a journey of artistic self-discovery and coming of age as she struggles to become the writer she longs to be amid the classic triumphs and troubles of Meg, Beth, Amy, and even Laurie. It is through a sense of play that Jo and her sisters find themselves, spending time in the attic making up fairy stories with witches and heroes, or spending an evening reciting the articles written for their beloved imaginary newspaper. It is, however, through the tragedy of losing her sister Beth that Jo finally finds her voice as an artist, and moves into adulthood with the knowledge that while families change and grow apart, the ones we love are always close at heart.

Chef Candace will lead you through the making of the meal, with plenty of time to taste it and discuss food, wine pairings, cooking techniques, products for the home kitchen and so much more. Then  you’ll leave with the printed recipes for the meals and the know-how to recreate them at home.
