Samantha Shares Her Pasta Class Experience

March 12, 2022 By Guest Contributor

Oh boy. Where do I start? So I found out that Grist Provisions has started doing in house classes in their newly renovated extension and I hopped on that as quickly as possible to secure a spot in the Friday night session. Because if I want to learn how to make pasta, I couldn’t think of anyone better to teach!!
And teach they did. Patrick and crew made the experience very informative and enjoyable from start to finish and the meal that came out afterwards was absolutely amazing. We started with the hands on part of making pasta, he then guided us through the process of making the sauce – thoughtfully answering all questions and giving some great advice. We then spent time forming our pasta shapes and then sat to eat.
And I’m full. I woke up this morning with no appetite and a belly that needs patting from time to time, reminding it that it will recover and it had a great time. It’s like my tummy has a hangover!!
To start we had a chicory and winter citrus salad, then saffron malloreddus with a roasted apple and pork ragu. And the caramelized white chocolate panna cotta was pure heaven.
And what felt like a never ending supply of their focaccia which didn’t hurt anyones feelings at all. Attempts to remove the bowls of focaccia were thwarted by 12 snarling cats in human form.
We left with the pasta we made, a well thought out instructional on how to recreate the meal at home and extras of the focaccia. Yay!!
I believe they’ll be doing classes twice a month with the next ones in two weeks from now. And it was absolutely worth signing up for. I feel like I’ve got the confidence now to try my hand at making pasta and as soon as my food hangover has subsided, I’ll be able to cook up the pasta that I made last night.
Anyway, Grist never disappoints and they always have our love and support! Bravo to them for all they do.

The ‘Human Race’ moves forward with a new ‘Kappy-Tain.’

March 12, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

35 Seasons in, the ‘The  Race Theater Company‘ is still strong, beloved and finding its future. The fingerprint, literally left on many hearts by the enduring leadership of Kevin Moore, (who has been part of the HRTC since DAY ONE!!)  now points the group in a new direction. Enter Kappy Kilburn.

‘I’ve been the executive director since 2018, but COVID kind of did its thing for the past couple years. ‘ Kilburn, who moved to Dayton from New York, has experience in Los Angeles and Pasadena…and is an alum of the Lincoln Center’s Directors Lab. ‘The Human Race has sustained and things look great for us moving forward.’ It’s a big jump from NYC to Dayton, but for Kilburn, it was kind of a homecoming. ‘ My Father worked at Armco. He was in the Air Force. As a kid, I think I  visited the Air Force Museum dozens of times!’ That would be a bridge back for Kilburn. ‘It’s honestly funny how my first interview sort of went down. My dad was in the Dayton area and knew I would be interviewing at the Human Race, So, he GPSed the theater, found the building, parked his car, went in and met Kevin and Tara and said in a Star Wars homage “You have heard of Kappy Kilburn…I Am Her Father!” He loved the people and the theater….and I knew it was meant to be from there!’

And it is. Trading the NYC craziness in for a home and spot for a 93lb. dog (Fred)  was just what Kilburn desired! ‘This is not a stepping stone. I love Dayton. This city is so loyal to its arts!  It blows my mind the variety of culture in this community. So incredibly supportive here.’ Kilburn talks about her first foray into the Dayton nightlife, spending time at Masquerage, where she encountered India Summer, one of Dayton’s  RubiGirls. ‘We were having this conversation, and here is this drag queen in full regalia, she was beautiful…and I thought to myself ‘I have found my people!’

And Dayton, thankfully, has found her. Kilburn is so approachable and at ease talking about all things theater. She gets the community vibe here. Everyone wanting success, and truly just trying to voice their opinions in hopes in helps keep the vibrancy of the arts scene alive. BUT, she is also aware that the Human Race Theater Company has something t live up to! ‘If we are going to be the Human Race Theater Company, then we have to find ways to be diverse and inclusive of all kinds of people!’ A great example of that dedication was the theater’s most recent production of ‘Everything that’s Beautiful,’ a story about a 10-year-old who was assigned male at birth but identifies as female. ‘The final performance, we invited folks from David’s Place and Dayton Children’s Hospital to come and talk with the audience about the show’s theme. It was expected to be a 15 minute discussion…it went for 45.’ A testament to the strength of diversity. ‘We have work to do to make all groups feel represented.’

Kilburn knows it’s not just diversity but balance that matters. That is not only reflected in the shows she helps to choose, along with Emily Wells, HRTC’s new Creative Director, but the audiences that come to see them.
‘We always have a pay what you can show during a play’s run. Theater must be accessible to all kinds of people. We want the stories being told to be heard by as many walks of life as possible.’  And that means younger folks as well. She is expanding the idea of job-shadowing and working with youth backstage, as well as front of house. ‘I really believe young people need to tell their stories as well. I want to find opportunity for them.’

Certainly, Dayton knows the impact we face losing Kevin Moore as the Creative Director. His dedication, his ideas and his creativity have paved the way for a strong and solid future at the Loft Theater. But, for now, the Human Race rests in the hands of a new visionary. Dayton can’t wait to see where she takes us!

“Outside, Looking In” at the tear-jerking ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’

March 9, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

Sniffles. Uproarious laughter.  Tears discretely wiped from the face. Deep sighs. And Feelings of Hopelessness. No, you’re not in high school trying to fit in….but Evan Hansen is. And my how we relate!

It’s only about 15 minutes into the Tony Award Winning Best Musical‘s Script that we see the writing on the wall. ‘Oh Sh*t…what has he done??’ We recognize it because we lived. ‘How do I fit in?’ ‘Will anyone care if I live or die?’ ‘What does it take to be seen?’ The lengths, innocently or otherwise, we will go for that sense of belonging drive Hansen’s story. The magnificent script, by Steven Levenson, is literally able to move an entire epic tale into a 2+ hour musical . It never misses a beat, loses its way or lets us rest! The show flies by!

Tackling every kind of relationship you can basically create, (mom and dad, mom and son, friend and ‘family’ friend, popular kid and nerd, daughter and mother…the list goes on) Levenson’s story weaves a strong sense of rooting for the underdog, only to realize that may not always be our best bet.  Throughout the show, Evan (played masterfully by Stephen Christopher Anthony) allows us to cheer him on, embrace his faults and ultimately forgive his errors in judgment. You cannot ‘not like’ Evan. He’s silly, sweet, sarcastic and ‘sorry’ for who and what he is. Who can’t relate to that!

The story, which lends itself to many swallowed tears, finds us wrapped in a deception that we are, as the audience, somehow part of! Connor Murphy (a big cheers to Nikhil Saboo for his portrayal…) is the hero, and the demon, and the focal point and that scapegoat! Without giving away much, you will get to it quickly when Evan belts ‘For Forever.’ And with that, fate is sealed. Lump in the throat, and a squirm in the chair.

The supporting characters are stellar! They provide the gears that keep the musical moving forward…with light (Cara Elyse Harris as Alana Beck is yummy fun)…and laughs (Matthew Edward Kemp‘s Jared is the voice we need to keep the show believable…). The moms, (Kelsey Venter as Cynthia Murphy, who gets our tears going early, and Jessica Sherman as Heidi Hansen, who brings it all home later in the show) get the ball rolling with ‘Anybody Have a Map.’ You can see moms in the audience physically nodding their heads in agreement as they listen to the lyrics.

The show has magical musical moments (Music and Lyrics by Pasek and Paul)….the beloved ‘You Will be Found’ (Buy the t-shirt at the shop.)…‘Only Us’ (which features the solid Alaina Anderson as Zoe)…and the heart-wrenching ‘So Big/So Small’ (let me know if you got through that without sobbing!). It’s packed with spectacular visual effects that drive home the culture we have become…and then again, simple sets, that drive home what’s still important.

You clutch to hope throughout the musical that everything will be just fine…and in a sense, perhaps that’s possible. But Evan Hansen is ‘real.’ Sure the sets are slick and the music is, at times, a bit melodramatic, but the story is one for this society to heed. Misinformation has consequences!!!

We know it….they know it….but as we have witnessed in our own world, just keeping ‘going’…who’s keeping score? In this case the audience. The very audience, that from the outset,  just wanted to say ‘Evan – you’re enough! You are enough!’ But, like Evan Hansen, we all had to learn that lesson on our own along the way!

‘Dear Evan Hansen’ plays at the Schuster Center March 8 – 13.

Go to daytonlive.org for tickets and information.

Latin Arepas Now Open in Springboro

March 8, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

I had the pleasure of first meeting Nestor and Gabriela in the summer of 2016 when they were getting ready to launch their food truck.  I had reached out to ask them questions about their menu and they invited me to their house to try their food.  Nestor charmed me while Gabriela was busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen, explaining that “as a child in Venezuela I watched my grandmother cook breakfast, feed the family, clean up and then start cooking lunch, which was our big meal of the day. These family recipes are third generation and what I grew up on.”

We started with Pabellon, the National dish of Venezuella, a rice bowl with shredded beef, black beans, plantains and white cheese.  Nestor then introduced me to the Latinas sauce, a secret recipe he wouldn’t share, but is something they’ll make up fresh daily.  Adding it to the yuca totally changed the taste and he shared they’ll also have a spicy Latinas sauce for those that like a little heat with their meal.

You may have enjoyed a meal at their food truck, or at the kitchen they ran out of Bar Granada downtown, but now you can enjoy their restaurant, which just opened up on Rt 73 in Springboro, across from Warped Wing.

Never had an Arepa?  (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈɾepa]) it is a type of food made of ground corn maize dough cooked flour. It is glucose free ideal for vegan and vegetarians  prominent cuisine of Venezuela and Colombia.
It is eaten daily in those countries and can be served with various accompaniments such as cheese (cuajada), avocado, or (especially in Venezuela) split and used to make sandwiches. Various sizes, maize types, and added ingredients are used to vary its preparation. It is similar in shape to the Mexican gordita and the Salvadoran pupusa. Arepas can also be found on many street corners in Panama, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and the Canary Island. We now bring you this delicious tropical Street Food directly to you via our Restaurant.

Here’s Latin Aprepas Cafe’s  menu:

Built in 1985, the building has been the previous home to a steak house, barbershop, yoga studio and Scruffy’s Hot Dog shoppe. Now completely remodeled with a tropical feel, it’s bright and fresh inside.
Upon entering, you’ll order at the counter and then your meal will be brought to you in the dining room, which seats about 50 guests. Food is prepared fresh to order and comes out pretty quickly.  Go visit and tell them Dayton Dining sent you!

The Empty Politics of Stoli’s Name Change

March 8, 2022 By Guest Contributor

The makers of Stolichnaya vodka announced that it would no longer be called Stolichnaya vodka. Instead, the brand will be known as Stoli, making official the nickname consumers have been using for years, and changing the name from an actual Russian word (“Stolichnaya” translates roughly to “metropolitan”) to one that doesn’t mean anything.

In response to Russia’s war on Ukraine, a few bartenders have made a show of dumping Stoli vodka down the drain, in a supposed move of solidarity with Ukraine. There is also increased government opposition toward Russian-made products. Multiple states with state-run liquor stores have banned the sale of Russian spirits from the shelves, even though less than one percent of alcohol consumed in the U.S. is Russian-made. However, Stoli says of the name change, “The three driving factors behind the decision are the founder’s vehement position on the Putin regime; the Stoli employees determination to take action; and the desire to accurately represent Stoli’s roots in Latvia.”

Stoli says its original formula was created in 1938, though others say the vodka originated in 1901, connected to the Moscow State Wine warehouse. It was first imported into the U.S. in the 1970s, with production based in Latvia, a fact the company has tried to emphasize in the past few weeks. It’s also made a point of highlighting Spirits International group owner Yuri Shefler’s beef with Putin. “While I have been exiled from Russia since 2000 due to my opposition to Putin, I have remained proud of the Stolichnaya brand,” he said in a statement. “Today, we have made the decision to rebrand entirely as the name no longer represents our organization. More than anything, I wish for ‘Stoli’ to represent peace in Europe and solidarity with Ukraine.”

Shefler’s persecution is a result of a dispute over who has control over the Stoli trademark, Shefler or the Russian government. “In 2000, in one the first examples of the regime identifying a valuable asset and attempting to wrest control of it, Putin waged a battle for Stoli ® vodka trademarks across the world,” Stoli explains on its site. “This is still ongoing in some countries. Yuri Shefler left Russia in 2002 and has not returned since.” Stoli also said it would be ensuring none of its ingredients are sourced from Russia, and is donating to World Central Kitchen’s relief efforts in Ukraine. The company did not specify when customers could expect to see newly-branded bottles on the shelves.

This isn’t the first time Stoli has had to clarify its relationship with Russia in response to a backlash. In 2013, columnist Dan Savage called on bars to boycott Stoli vodka in response to Russia’s anti-gay laws, and said that it didn’t matter if Stoli was made in Latvia — its distributor is still Russian-owned. Spirits International’s then-CEO, Val Mendeleev, said at the time, “We fully support and endorse your objectives to fight against prejudice in Russia. In the past decade, SPI has been actively advocating in favor of freedom, tolerance, and openness in society, standing very passionately on the side of the LGBT community and will continue to support any effective initiative in that direction.”

By officially adopting a nickname, Stoli is attempting to further reject its Russian past, perhaps positioning itself to be a popular choice among people who base their politics around what they buy. It may also be a move to avoid harassment. Restaurants like the Russian Tea Room in New York and Texas’s Russian House have proactively distanced themselves from Russia, with Russian House going so far as to change its name, as businesses even the tiniest bit associated with Russia are facing threats and vandalism.

But will the few people already dumping out their bottles of Stoli stop now that it’s ditched the “-chnaya”? It’s hard to say. The spirit having been made in Latvia for decades didn’t stop them from doing so in the first place. What’s more, Russia is not synonymous with Putin, and anyone assuming a brand originating in that country automatically endorses everything its current leader does probably has a flimsy understanding of geopolitics at best. And honestly, does “Stoli” even sound less Russian?

The rebrand is a largely empty gesture, made to placate customers’ squeamishness around being associated with Russia (and possibly helping Stoli out in their trademark battle?) without actually requiring them to do anything. Buying or not buying Stoli was never going to affect Russia in the first place. It still won’t.
