Wingstop 4/20-Inspired Flavor, Blazed & Glazed Wings

April 17, 2022 By Dayton937

Let’s be blunt: Wingstop Inc. knows their wings are the ultimate munchies and that 4/20 is a sacred holiday for their guests. So, in celebration of the most chill day of the year, the wing joint is honoring their cannabis-loving fans with a limited-edition, 4/20-inspired flavor called Blazed & Glazed, available starting on April 18 in restaurants nationwide.

As the company notes, these wings won’t get you high, but the “sticky, sweet, smoky and herbal flavors will ignite your senses and create a tingly sensation.” The Blazed & Glazed is a limited-edition wing flavor made from a combination of hemp seeds, terpenes (the natural chemicals that cause plants to smell a certain way), strawberry and cayenne pepper. The wing name, of course, is a nod toward the stoner term “blaze & daze” — the opposite of “wake and bake,” it refers to smoking marijuana right before going to sleep.

“Some of our biggest fans aren’t just pairing their favorite wings with seasoned fries,” Marisa Carona, Wingstop’s chief growth officer, said in a statement.

With this launch, Wingstop is tapping into a massive marketing trend as the legalization of cannabis continues to grow throughout the U.S. Eighteen states and Washington, DC, have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, with more adding legalization to the ballot.

April 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

About two weeks ago the doors to The Last Queen Gastropub opened on East Main Street in Enon. The 49 seat eatery is rustic and charming serving up british classics, ale and more.  Upon entering you grab a table, then head to the bar to place your order at which time you’ll be given a wooden spoon with a number and a British Character on it.  We got Harry Potter, but spotted Winston Churchill, The Queen and Idris Elba on other tables in the dining room. On Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am – noon they serve a traditional Full English Breakfast with local eggs, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, sausage, bacon baked beans and toast.

Over time, they decided to open a brick-and-mortar location. This enabled them to host regular groups of people looking to create terrariums and other craft projects.

“My favorite part is watching people create their own designs and encouraging them to experiment and work with nature. At the end, it’s nice to see how proud they are of their designs,” Cooks said.

Script Reading of An Appalachian Version Of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

April 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Here’s your chance to witness a piece of showbiz, right here in Dayton.  FilmDayton filmmaker Shaunn Baker is staging a  public reading for a new screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream  on Monday April 25th at  7pm at The Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton. The reading is open to the public and free to attend. Make your free reservation here.
The adaptation is set in Appalachia during the 1800s, and uses Appalachian dialect with the original Shakespearean verse.

Shaunn Baker

“Shakespeare’s words performed with this dialect are really beautiful, as it turns out,” said local filmmaker Shaunn Baker who adapted the screenplay and is working to get the script produced as a feature film. “It’s a rougher sound, closer to the Old English the play would have been performed in originally. It’s a very different experience from hearing the story in the more traditional ‘heightened’ dialect we typically associate with Shakespeare. My hope is that the roughness of the Appalachian culture and accent will make this adaptation much more accessible to contemporary audiences.”

This project is generously supported (in part) through an Artist Opportunity Grant funded by the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District and administered by Culture Works.

In addition to his foundation, gun legislation advocacy service, and gun rally participation, he serves on the Board of Felons with a Future, Upturn Ohio and numerous other community initiatives and support networks across the country. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades.

Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. On September 17, 2021, Melissa released a new album called One Way Out. The 9-track album is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s that never made the cut….until now! TLC

TLC’s influence transcends genres from pop, hip-hop, R&B to fashion and female  empowerment. They continue to define generations. To date, TLC has sold 85 million Records Worldwide, had 4 Number One singles  in the US, 10 Top Ten singles in the US, won 4 Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Awards, 5 Soul  Train Awards, and 4 Multi-Platinum selling albums, two of them – Fanmail and  CrazySexyCool are certified Diamond by the RIAA and they currently have one billion  plays on Pandora. It’s no surprise that TLC is the best-selling American girl group of all  time.

Formed in Atlanta in 1990, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, two girls  with spirit, smarts and spunk, had their sights set on a big future. Feeling a trio could work better than a duo, a manager recommended  Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas to round out the sound, with their nicknames spelling out the  acronym TLC. By 1992, the girls had not only been signed, but released their first  album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, to both critical and commercial success, selling 4  million copies in the Unites States and yielding 3 top ten singles. Along with their ability  to blend funk, hip hop and soul, the ladies put female empowerment at the forefront of  their songwriting. Two years later they released their breakthrough album,  CrazySexyCool. Met with critical and commercial  acclaim once more, Rolling Stone ranked it as one of the best 500 Albums of all time  saying it was “highly enjoyable, incredibly influential and a certified classic.” The album  produced 4 top five singles on the Billboard charts and TLC won Video of the Year for  the song “Waterfalls” at the MTV Awards, making them the first black act to do so.

Shaggy

The two-time Grammy winner was born Orville Richard Burrell and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Shaggy got his start as a club DJ in New York City’s burgeoning dancehall scene soon after moving to Brooklyn in his teens. Not long after serving four years in the U.S. Marines (including two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Storm), he inked his first record deal and quickly scored a global crossover smash with “Oh Carolina.”

As the only diamond-selling dancehall artist in music history, Shaggy, managed by the Cherrytree Music Company, has sold more than 40 million album units to date, in addition to landing eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and seven albums on the Billboard 200 (including four in the top 40). He is among the top 3 streamed reggae artists of all time on Spotify (along with Bob Marley & Sean Paul).

Queen Of Southern Soul featuring Nellie Tiger Travis

April 15, 2022 By Dayton937

The pathway from the Mississippi Delta through Memphis to Chicago and onto the rest of the world was paved by some of the most influential artists in music history. Trailblazers like Muddy Waters, Dorothy Moore, BB King and Howling Wolf took the Magnolia State’s signature blues sound from the dusty flatlands of the cotton fields and laid the foundation for all American music to build upon.

Be it R&B, soul, pop, rock n roll, EDM or hip-hop, the cornerstone of modern music was birthed in these humble and destitute beginnings but went on to shape the sound of music across the globe.

Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Now Playing at The Loft

April 14, 2022 By Dayton937

The Human Race Theatre Company continues its 35th Season with a new play by Seattle playwright Katie Forgette – Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help – playing April 14 – May 1 at the Loft Theatre.   This charming comedy recounts an unforgettable day in 1973 for the O‘Shea’s, a cash-strapped Irish-Catholic family in a city very much like Dayton.

19 year-old Linda O’Shea, our narrator, attempts to re-enact the most turbulent day of her life, interrupted by her family with their side of the story. The 70’s were a time of old school living – no social media, and public ridicule in a close-knit community was the ultimate nightmare. Linda reflects on an “incident” she sparked in 1973, when their overbearing priest, Father Lovett, overhears a conversation between her and her sister about puberty. It’s a moment that could have threatened the family’s upstanding reputation in the conservative parish. As Linda says, this is a story familiar to anyone who has experienced “Catholic guilt — also known as Jewish guilt, Methodist guilt, Baptist guilt, Lutheran guilt and atheist guilt.”  When Father Lovett confronts her parents about the “corruption of their eldest daughter’s very soul,” all holy hell and hysteria break loose in this nostalgic comedy.

New York-based director Margarett Perry returns to helm this hilarious new play.  She most recently directed the streaming comedy The Revolutionists last June, and numerous productions since 2005. “Margarett has become a regular member of our artistic family with many great comedies and dramas to her credit,” said Artistic Director, Kevin Moore.  “She was hand-selected by Marsha Hanna and she has delivered great productions time after time.”

An extraordinary cast that will bring this show to life includes both new and returning artists: Cecily Dowd will play our narrator, Linda O’Shea (Dayton native, One Slight Hitch ); Christine Brunner as the long-suffering, rarely-complaining, hardworking mom Josephine “Jo” ‘Shea (Resident Artist, 26 Pebbles, Steel Magnolias, Play It By Heart); Mierka Girten as the very liberal Aunt Theresa “Terri” O’Shea (Master Class, Beehive, Little Shop of Horrors, Bus Stop); Jason Podplesky in multiple roles as Dad, Mike ‘Shea, Father Lovett, and parish busybody, Betty Hackenbach (Sylvia, 26 Pebbles, Becky’s New Car);  and Columbus native Lizzie Huelskamp, making her Human Race debut as younger sister, Becky O‘Shea. (Annie, Little Mermaid, The Secret Garden.)

Joining Director Margarett Perry on the Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help creative team is:  Eric Moore, Scenic Designer;  John Rensel, Lighting Designer;  Janet G. Powell, Costume Designer; Julian Crocamo, Sound Designer; and Production Stage Manager, Jacquelyn Duncan.

Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help will play in the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton, April 14 – May 1, 2022.  Tickets are on sale through Dayton Live box office, 937-228-3630, or online atwww.humanracetheatre.org

Nature Calls, Sidney Awaits

April 14, 2022 By Dayton937

Looking to escape to a slower pace? Take a break from the day-to-day and head to Sidney, just 36 miles north of Dayton. In the seat of Shelby County, you’ll find over 400 acres of parkland to explore, along with unique shopping and dining destinations that evoke all the charm of small-town Ohio.

Outdoor Oasis

Outdoor enthusiasts, rejoice! There’s plenty to discover in the 220 acres of woodlands, waterways, and lakes in Tawawa Civic Park. This natural oasis offers something for adventurers of all ages. The wooded park is a popular outdoor location for family get-togethers, picnics, and cookouts, offering more than 20 shelters and play areas throughout, along with plentiful opportunities for solo activities like fishing and hiking encouraging visitors to unplug and unwind.

Photo courtesy of The Sidney Visitors Bureau.

Trekking along the park’s seven miles of trails, you’ll encounter Big Rock, a 12-foot-tall glacial boulder left from the Ice Age. The one-mile-long Benjamin Trail follows a millrace. It extends the length of the park. It used to supply water to Sidney’s first water and electric plant located nearby on Brooklyn Avenue. Next, seek out the 1971 Ross Covered Bridge in the middle of the park for postcard-worthy photo opportunities. For those who like to venture off the beaten bath, longer nature trails are located toward the back of the park.

Hit the Links

In addition to its parks, Sidney is also home to a variety of golf clubs, perfect for an afternoon on the green or a weekend getaway. Shelby Oaks Golf Club provides a fun and challenging experience for golfers of all skill levels across its 27 holes. Rob Fridley, who has been the director of operations at Shelby Oaks Golf Club for forty years, notes that the course is home to one of Dayton’s Top 50 Golf Holes, Number 9 South.

Situated on the grounds of the Sidney Moose Lodge, the Moose Golf Course is open to the public. Originally the Shelby County Country Club, this 9-hole, the 35-par course features tight fairways and smaller greens much in the tradition of early golf course design.

Established in 1965, Arrowhead Golf Club is just 15 minutes from Sidney and offers an eighteen-hole course layout, practice facility, and full pro shop. In addition, Arrowhead boasts an on-site restaurant, The Bunker, a favorite with visitors and locals alike.

Trail Ways

Hop over to Sidney’s Canal Feeder Bike-Hike Trail for even more outdoor fun. This 3.4-mile paved trail follows the former Sidney Feeder Canal and later runs parallel to the scenic Great Miami River, a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Did you know that the Great Miami is #1 in the state of Ohio for smallmouth bass and the river itself has been designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Water Trail — a distinction that has been given to only 32 other locations in the United States.

The Veteran’s Memorial Walkway is a multi-use ADA-accessible path that provides 4.5 miles of paved trails for walking and cycling. Memorial trees line the walkway commemorating organizations, friends, and family.

Shop Local

Once you’ve had your fill of nature, venture to downtown Sidney for an authentic taste of small-town living. As you stroll the sidewalks, you’ll find several unique shopping destinations bordering the traditional town square. The Ivy Garland is a gift shop specializing in gift and decorator items for all occasions.

Next, head around the corner to Vin & Joy, a fashion boutique offering a variety of fun gifts, on-trend accessories, and the latest in women’s apparel. Moonflower Effect features organic essential oils, custom blends, diffusers, ethically sourced clothing, and more. While you’re there, why not also book an hour-long dry salt therapy session in their new salt room for ultimate relaxation?

Greenhaus Coffee offers a unique Coffee Shop | Plant Shop concept in the heart of downtown. The retail side offers indoor plants, home décor items, and locally crafted gifts. In addition, guests will enjoy their café offering a fantastic selection of Purebred Coffees, made-to-order seltzers, natural fruit sodas, teas, toasts, pastries, salads, and more.

If you’re up for a detour, check out Gallery 2:TEN and Re:Vive Home Décor & More, just minutes from downtown, and discover works from more than 40 different artists and craftspeople. Shop original pottery, jewelry, metal sculptures, and hot-blown glass creations along with a wide array of vintage, reclaimed, and artfully repurposed furniture.

Small-Town Bites

Feeling hungry? Downtown Sidney offers several appealing reasons to stick around for a bite to eat. Partake in a refreshing chilled beverage on one of many outdoor dining patios overlooking the idyllic town square with the majestic Shelby County Courthouse positioned at its center. During its construction in 1883, the limestone, sandstone, and marble were brought in by canal boat. The courthouse’s looming 170-foot center tower features four clocks. The town square is the site of many special local events, such as cruise-ins and the farmers market held from early June through early October.

The Spot, an iconic diner, was first established in 1907 as a lunch wagon operated by Spot Miller. Today, it’s an art deco-style diner loved by locals for its fresh-ground hamburgers, crispy onion rings, thick malts, and homemade pies. It’s a great place to stop by for a dessert, meal, or snack. Dine-in or order carryout and picnic like a pro in the shade of the old-growth oak trees on the Shelby County Courthouse lawn.

Family-owned Italian pizza shop Amelio’s Pizzeria is serving up years of family heritage and Italian culture. Husband and wife Rob and Toni Thorne named the restaurant after Toni’s great-grandfather, Giuseppe Amelio Cecere, who came to America from Italy in 1920 and opened a pizza shop in his garage.

Yet another dinner option is The Bridge Restaurant, serving upscale eats like steak and seafood prepared fresh in-house daily, or Tavolo, offering modern Italian fare. Before calling it a night, be sure to check out what’s on tap at Murphy’s Craftbar + Kitchen. This trendy bistro boasts 48 taps featuring a wide selection of Ohio brews and craft cocktails.

As their motto goes: Sidney Ohio. A spirit we share.

Dayton at Work and Play: Erin Nash

April 14, 2022 By Bill Franz

Erin Nash, the Upcycling Librarian.

“I was a librarian and I saw that many people donated books to our library that we couldn’t use. Some of those books had beautiful covers or illustrations. So about eight years ago I began disassembling unwanted books and using the materials to make various paper products. I use beautiful old book covers to make journals with blank pages, or a personalized book containing a customer’s treasured family letters or documents. I also make bookmarks and sell illustrations taken from old books.”

“I have an ETSY shop called UpcyclingLibrarian, but most of my sales are made person to person. I sell at various markets and POPUP events. Potential customers can learn my schedule by following me on Instagram at @upcyclinglibrarian or emailing me at [email protected]“

10?’s with Chef Suwapat “Sue” Whitted of Thai Kitchen & Thai Table

April 13, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Whitted has operated Thai Kitchen at 8971 Kingsridge Drive behind the Dayton Mall since 2017.  After a major remodel of the old Geez restaurant on Far Hills, she opened Thai Table in March of 2021.  Whitted shared  that “Thai cuisine has becoming more popular in the Dayton area, and I want to explore some new ideas.” Somehow between running both restaurants she found time to answer our questions.

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

This may sound pretty basic, but I love to cook with rice! In Asian cuisine, rice is an important main ingredient. The variety also gives you so many options to choose from, like long grain rice, short grain rice, and especially Jasmine rice, which is very popular in Thailand. Growing up in Thailand, rice was like bread is here in America, there are so many uses for it!

Thai Kitchen on Kingsridge Dr.

What ingredient do you dread?
Hmm… I don’t think I dread any ingredients. I love challenging myself with new foods all the time, even making special dishes for customers. My husband is the guinea pig for my new dishes, maybe you should ask him what he dreads haha.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

I love love love making dishes that make others happy! My favorite is BBQ ribs! My husband and his family ask for them all the time and they seem to absolutely love them! I’ve even catered our family events before and the ribs were gone almost instantly.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

Ok… So, this is my guilty pleasure… I love to pig out on the fish sandwich from Wendy’s! Or any fish sandwich from most fast food places, but Wendy’s is usually what I crave the most, as well as their nuggets and frosties! Yummm!

Tiger Super Rolls

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

Haha, well other than my own… Definitely China Cottage! I think the food there is very good! Especially the duck! The owners are also good friends of mine, and are some of the nicest people that you could ever meet!

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

For anyone who cooks from home, always try to keep your ingredients fresh! It makes such a big difference in the end result. I drive myself crazy trying to keep the freshest ingredients at our restaurants but there’s no substitute. The best way to get the best end result no matter what you’re making, is to start at the best possible starting point! Also, be careful with hot popping oils.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Ahh… That’s such a good question! I am very family oriented so of course the four guests at my dinner party would be my family who still live in Thailand! I would love for my Grandmother to come here and see all I’ve been able to do, she’s very old and doesn’t travel well, but it would be so great to show her America for the first time. Another, is my Aunt, who helped raise me as a child! She’s one of the nicest, sweetest people that I’ve ever met. Of course, no dinner party would feel complete for me without my amazing parents! My Mom and Dad have been so supportive and helpful. It’s hard moving literally to the other side of the world and trying to start your own business, and I couldn’t have done it without them!

Pad Thai

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

My best friends and owners/chefs from Bangkok Street in Cincinnati Toon and Cindy! They took me under their wings and taught me everything they knew about the business. From how to cook, to running a restaurant! They are who I look to whenever I feel like I’ve gotten myself in over my head.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Sleep! Haha! Owning two different restaurants I very rarely have any time off, but on the occasion that I do get time off, I usually will go around and buy fresh ingredients for the restaurants. I’ll often go out with my hubby and have a nice dinner date night and we’ll go and watch a movie! I love spending time with him, he helps keep me sane with my crazy schedule- haha.

Out On 5th Returns Starting This Weekend!

April 12, 2022 By Dayton937

The Oregon District Business Association (ODBA) has announced the return of the Out on 5th program for 2022. The program will officially launch this Thursday, April 14. A soft launch for the program was held last weekend.

Fifth Street in the Oregon District will be closed to vehicular traffic between Patterson Boulevard and Wayne Avenue starting at 3 pm on Thursday, April 14, and will reopen to traffic early on the morning of Monday, April.

The first official Out on 5th road closure will begin one day early due to the Easter holiday, but following Out on 5th weekends will follow a Friday – Sunday schedule.

Out of Fifth will close the street:

Fridays 5 -10 pm
Saturdays noon – 10 pm
Sundays noon – 10 pm

“The Oregon District’s business owners are so excited for another season of Out on 5th,” said Emily Mendenhall, owner of Lily’s Dayton and ODBA board member. “The program brings a huge increase in business for our bars, restaurants, and retailers, and we love welcoming even more new and regular customers to the district.”

The Out on 5th pedestrian mall will feature extra outdoor seating, music and other entertainment, special sales events, and more amenities for guests.

“This program started as a way to help our businesses recover during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Sandra K. Gudorf, President of the Downtown Dayton Partnership. “Over the last two years, it’s grown and become not only a vital tool to help support our small businesses, but a community event to welcome guests back downtown.”

During Out on 5th, guests are invited to patronize downtown businesses and enjoy public seating areas set up on the sidewalks and in the street. Guests 21 years and older can also take part in the Oregon District’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) program. The program is in effect every day of the year (excluding St. Patrick’s Day and the last Saturday in October) and allows patrons to carry open alcoholic beverages served in branded DORA cups within the designated area.

Here’s a map of the parking lots near the Oregon District:

Oregon District businesses and neighbors kindly ask guests to use surface lots, parking garages, and public street spaces and not park in the residential neighborhood.
