BBQ Pit Stop Now Open on Smithville

April 3, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new BBQ join in town, but we’ve been eating his meat for six years from his Smoking Barrels food truck. They are the reigning champ of the Yellow Cab BBQ Rodeo in the pulled pork category from the last time the event was held in 2019.

And yes, the food truck will still be out and about, event with the restaurant opening.

Co-Owner Damon Daniel says he opened the bricks and mortar eatery on April 1st and looks forward to feeding folks year round.

Located at 2615 S. Smithville Road, next to the Sweet Retreat, BBQ Pit Stop will be  open Tuesday – Sunday for carry out or delivery via door dash.

The menu features chopped chicken, pulled pork, chopped brisket and fried ribs, as well as burgers and loaded fries and nachos.  Sides include slaw, kraut, baked beans, green beans, cheesy potatoes, crinkly fires and mixed greens with ham. They offer two sauces, sweet or spicy.

The loaded nacho’s start with crinkle fries or tortilla chips, and then are stacked high with your choice of pork, chicken or ground beef, your choice of side on top of the meat and all drizzled with nacho cheese served with pickles and jalapenos.

The fried ribs are seasoned with a BBQ rub then battered and deep fried.

While we were there, they were experimenting with some ideas for a brunch menu.  We tried the deep fried sausage biscuit with gravy and we’d order it again if it makes the menu.

Troy Furniture Store Owner Raising Funds for Ukraine

April 3, 2022 By Dayton937

The situation in Ukraine is no secret, and Troy’s Barefoot Furniture Co., a small custom furniture shop, wants to use their talent and platform to leverage support from the Ukraine community. They started reaching out to companies they use, and in a matter of a few days were able to pull together all of the components necessary to build an amazing one of a kind coffee table that we could raffle off to people for donating to Ukraine relief!

With the support of their sponsors, they are excited to offer this coffee table to one of you! The top of the table is covered in an epoxy inlayed engraving that is based off of traditional Ukrainian folk art known as Petrykivka.  Owner Drew Larck shares,
“It’s Ukrainian folk art that I found online, actually, is the design on there. It was about 14 hours of carve time on the CNC, then probably another 15 hours worth of labor that went into it. I couldn’t think of a more beautiful and fitting piece of artwork to grace the top of this piece!”

So here are the details!

-Any donations are welcome and highly appreciated!

-$25 Donations count for 1 ticket into the raffle

-$100 Donations count for 5 tickets into the raffle

-$500 Donations count for 30 tickets into the raffle

-The table measure 40″ long, 17.5″ tall, and 22″ wide

-They will ship the table anywhere in the Lower 48

-They will draw the winner on 4/8/22

The raffle goal is to raise $2500. Make your donation here.  The money then goes to a fundraiser for Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian aid organization that’s working to bring relief to Ukrainians.

Cemetery Symbols Tour
Have you ever wandered through a cemetery and wondered about the meanings of the designs carved on old gravestones? Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter, membership in a fraternal or social organization, or an individual’s trade, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty.

Dayton’s Walk of Fame Tour
Dayton’s Walk of Fame was created in 1996 as part of the City of Dayton’s Bicentennial Celebration. Many of those inducted into the walk are resting peacefully at Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum. Some of the featured inductees include: Rev. DeSoto E. Bass, Dr. August F. Foerste, E. E. Barney, Jacob O. Joyce, John A. And was the “Cincinnati Ripper” living in Dayton? These stories and more are told in this walk to the grave sites of a victim or perpetrator of a crime. Please note that the tour relates the actual accounts of murders that took place in Dayton. Graphic details are given and may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Wedded Bliss: Square One Salon Takes Top Bridal Honor.

April 1, 2022 By Dayton937

We all love to hear about local success stories, and for Square One Salons, the honor of Best Bridal Make-Up (Ohio Weddings Magazine)  and a nomination for the yet to be named Best Hair Salon (Columbus Weddings) have recently come to light!

‘It all comes from the idea of going above and beyond for wedding guests,’ says Square One Brand Director, Laura Belle. ‘We try and ensure the entire day is relaxing and stress free at each location. We have wedding coordinators who take the pressure off the bridal party. We are aware that timing, level of service and just having a good time are part of the process. That’s the great thing about being a full-service salon, we have the ability to do it all!’

Square One has been riding high in recent months with ‘Best of…’ awards and ‘Outstanding Salons….’ recognition. ‘At Square One our guests are always number one. We know and understand there are so many moving parts on that special day! We consider all the factors when booking a wedding. We are fortunate to have many service providers on one team, under one roof! Our bridal parties love to bring in food and beverages…basically the whole PARTY into the salon! And why not? It’s their day!’ Belle continues. ‘Our make-up teams are magnificent. They are studied and really take the day seriously, but keep up that light energy that brides crave on the big day!’

Not all clients are eager to visit a salon, they choose off-site for their wedding day. ‘No Problem,’ says Belle. ‘Our teams love off-site events. We have a separate  menu for that, and we send the same Square One experienced team for these moments!’  Ohio has many, many salons and for Square One, the idea that they received mention in Ohio Weddings reinforces their drive to continue forward with their style of business and culture. ‘We stick to what works. Our make-up teams, actually all of our teams, get continuing education on all things related to weddings. We refuse to stay stagnant. Our teams are growing and we are elevating our skills on the regular.’

Dayton at Work and Play: Cayman K

April 1, 2022 By Bill Franz

Met a new artist recently at Front Street. He’s Ahmad Kane, better known as Cayman K. He refers to himself as an outsider folk artist.
I understand that he used to paint on canvas, but now does most of his work on scrap wood and other found objects. Since making that switch his work has become more popular and he is now widely collected. Most of his selling is done online, but you can see his work tonight during First Friday. He’s in the Annex Building on the 2nd floor
