10 Beers for 10 Years at Lock 27

April 10, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Today is the 2nd release in Lock 27’s 10 Beers for 10 Years promotion releasing a beer from the Lock 27 Brewing vault to celebrate their 10th Anniversary! The re-released brews were made by Lock 27 at some point over the past decade but were eventually retired – until now. In coordination with the re-releases, customers can earn a chance to win limited edition anniversary prizes. With each 10th anniversary beer purchase, customers will be offered a stamp card that they can fill up with stamps for each anniversary beer purchased. The more stamps collected, the bigger the prize.

Release # w is 1492, an American Red IPA, was first brewed in 2013 as part of a Hop 101 experimental brewing series educating Lock 27 Brewing customers on the distinct characteristics of different hops. The Columbus hop was a fan favorite—enough to be officially named 1492 and be put on tap a few more times through 2017.

This brew is the perfect blend of strong hop flavor and sweet malts, with a moderately strong bitter taste that retains a dry finish and lean body – which makes IPAs so beloved. Its flavorful notes of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit make this Red IPA so distinctive, with an overall balance of sweet and hoppy.  Ohio.ABV- 7.7% and IBU- 77

Over the next month, Lock 27 Brewing will focus on the often-overlooked stories of this historic year from the perspective of the Native American community. They’ll be holding an educational event at the end of the month to highlight and celebrate Indigenous culture, contributions, and innovations. They’ll be sharing what the year 1492 meant to Native American people, and how their global contributions shaped the world that we know today. $1 of every 1492 purchase will be donated to the Sunwatch Indian Village to support the Native American community in Dayton,

This historic brew is hitting the taps at Lock 27 on April 14th at 5pm! Stay tuned on the 10th of each month for the next release.

Sueno To Host “From Dayton With Love” Fundraising Concert

April 9, 2022 By Dayton937

“From Dayton, With Love” is an evening of entertainment and fundraising to support those on the ground defending their homeland of Ukraine. On 4.24, Sueño will transform into a performance space, featuring:

*Live Slavic and Appalachian musical performances from Brother Hill, Benya Stewart, and Siarzhuk Douhushau (of Slavalachia) and a Hill Spirits Hoedown

*Belly dancing by Lily Datura of Gem City Burlesque

*Fire dancing from Aurora Fire

*Eastern European wines and inspired cocktails from Soroca Imports

*Silent auctions featuring donations from local businesses

Tickets are $10. (Please note that Sueño will NOT be offering food this evening). All proceeds from ticket sales, bar sales, and silent auctions will be used to support UA First Aid, a grassroots initiative started by Ukrainian students of Ohio University who returned to Ukraine at the start of the war to help their people in their time of greatest need. One of the most desperate needs is for IFAK’s (Individual First Aid Kits) which have become nearly impossible to access in Ukraine. These life-saving kits are essential for the treatment of wounded civilians, as well as volunteer and military personnel alike. These kits on average cost $115 per unit.

Though it is our sincere hope that this conflict will be resolved as soon as possible, we must prepare for the possibility that these items will still be needed in the weeks to come. If hostilities have generally ceased by the time this money is raised, funds will go directly to wherever they are most needed, whether to caring for orphaned children, to humanitarian supplies, or to rebuilding efforts. We make it our duty and mission to serve the citizens of Ukraine however we may best serve them.

Tickets are just $10 and available online.

It’s National Gin & Tonic Day!

April 9, 2022 By Dayton937

A gin and tonic is a highball cocktail made with gin and tonic water poured over a large amount of ice. The ratio of gin to tonic varies according to taste, strength of the gin, other drink mixers being added, etc., with most recipes calling for a ratio between 1:1 and 1:3. It is usually garnished with a slice or wedge of lime. To preserve effervescence, the tonic can be poured down a bar spoon. The ice cools the gin, dulling the effect of the alcohol in the mouth and making the drink more pleasant and refreshing to taste.

Most people think that Gin comes from England or Ireland. But it is not true! What actually very few know: Gin is originally from the Netherlands. Since the Middle Ages people knew about the medical effects and the disinfectant healing power of juniper berries which were consumed to fight against fever and even the pest. The dutch doctor Franciscus Sylvius de la Boe is the inventor of Gin. In the 16th century, he made a schnaps distilled with juniper berries, so called “Genever” (in dutch: juniper berry) which was consumed for medical purposes. During the Eighty Year’s War (1568-1648) the dutch soldiers were supposed to drink the “Genever” to feel brave. In the 17th century “Genever” came to England, where the originally “Genever” developed to the today’s “Gin”.

In England, Gin became very popular. Gin promoted not only the production of local spirits, everybody was allowed to distill his own Gin. The increase of import taxes for alcohol from foreign countries and the high taxes for the local beers and wines had lead to an explosion of Gin production in England.

The question arises, when exactly one of the most requested long drinks in the world, Gin Tonic, emerged? When Britain occupied India in the beginning of the 19th century, the soldiers had to ingest quinine every day to prevent Malaria. To cover the bitter taste, the smart Britains added water, sugar and lime. One day, someone got the glorious idea and added Gin. The first Gin Tonic was born.

By World War I, gin and tonics were staples in British clubs and bars. In Post World War II America, they became a favorite of the country club set. Historically Tanqueray, Beefeater, and Bombay Sapphire have been the gins most people grab when making at G & T.

Today we challenge you to celebrate Gin & Tonic Day by trying some of these newer  gins:

GREEN HAT GIN:  Crafted in Washington D.C.’s first distillery since Prohibition, distilled with a unique blend of botanicals in copper pot stills, Green Hat Gin is inspired by the infamous Man in the Green Hat.

Hendrick’s is the marriage of two different spirits from two rare and unusual  stills: The harmonious combination of the Bennett and Carter-Head stills create and unusually smooth gin like no other that has the required character and balance of subtle flavors. Hendrick’s is handcrafted in tiny batches of only 500 lovely liters at a time, which gives the Master Distiller, Ms. Lesley Gracie, greater control of her careful artistry.
Hendrick’s suggests that the gin be served with tonic water over ice garnished with cucumber instead of the traditional citrus.
Original
$34.99 750ml
The infusion of Rose and Cucumber
Neptunia
$39.99 750ml
Introduced in 2021
Inspired by the magic of the sea this gin is infused with locally sourced coastal botanicals including citrus, thyme and sea kelp.
The sale of Hendrick’s Neptunia will raise urgent awareness and funds to support seagrass meadows and the vital role they play in providing food and habitat for thousands of marine species and those that rely on them through their charity partner, Project Seagrass. Additionally, Hendrick’s is funding new projects such as a targeted seagrass study on the west coast of Scotland, where the Hendrick’s Gin Palace is located, that will unlock the opportunity for restorative work in the region.
Lunar
$39.99 750ml
Introduced in 2022
Inspired by the magic of the evening this gin is infused with night blooming floral essence and offers a delicate balance of warm baked spices and a crisp burst of citrus.
The nose is actually quite floral, full up with notes of roses, buttercups, and honeysuckle, giving the gin a heavily perfumed attack.  Secondary elements of cut grass, some lemon peel, and eventually a light touch of juniper all come into the picture, but none of these are particularly distinct, as those light, fragrant flowers maintain the bulk of the focus. The finish is again heavily floral — more rose-like here than any other flowers,

Vim & Petal Dry Gin
$25.20 750ml

Middle West Spirits, a Columbus distillery, also draws inspiration from local plants, using Ohio’s soft red winter wheat as the base for its Vim & Petal Dry Gin. In this full-bodied American-style gin, 18 botanicals come together to create citrus aromas, notes of elderberry, and a floral finish. The versatile herbal flavors will awaken your senses, much like crisp air on a bright spring day.

This American style dry gin bursts forth with a pioneering robustness, then falls quietly like the soft red winter wheat at its base. Each full-bodied flavor and enticing note of Vim & Petal brings to life 18 botanicals and the delicate tension between them, to give you character, dimension, and a refined versatility.

Please refer to the OHLQ.COM site if readers would like to know where to find these bottles.

Special thanks to Rachel Anne Jensen of RNDC General for her gin suggestions.

Local Entrepreneur Offers Gift Box of Local Products From Women Owned Businesses

April 7, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Ever wanted to send a gift box to a friend, but also support local business as well, but don’t have the time to do the running around to pick up local products?

Well now there’s a way!  Erin Thomas Bektas, a local grad student at Bowling Green University, is taking part in a 12 week entrepreneurial program called The Hatch. She’s been working all semester long on hatching her idea, researching and branding it and now she’s beta testing her concept: Curated City Gifts.

It’s a gift box company featuring goods curated from small, local, women-owned businesses and packaged by city. She is piloting the program here in  Dayton.

This test box featured product from 8 local women-owned businesses:   Heart Mercantile Wholly Grounds Smales Pretzel Bakery Ciao Bel Fiore Fleur Thought Artisan Soap Paperreka and Peace on Fifth.

Each box will come beautifully boxed with a letter press card describing all of the products included.  Here’s what this first test box includes:

Erin explained that when choosing items to include in the gift box she had to choose products that have a a long shelf life, could be easily shipped and fit her theme of women owned businesses for this first box.  She envisions rolling out Columbus as the next city, where her twin sister lives.  Her sister is currently handling the social media fo Curated City Gifts. Keeping it a family business, her husband is working on creating the website to sell these boxes online.

This very special gift box of curated products from Dayton is going fast! Contact Erin Thomas Bektas or email [email protected] for purchase. You’ll even get free delivery in the Dayton area if you
purchase before 4/8.
After the pilot for the gift boxes ends April 21st, as part of the class Erin will pitch her concept to a group of Bowling Green Alumni and funders for a chance at an investment based on her business plan and pilot.

Dayton’s Premier Black-Tie Gala Returns for 65th Anniversary

April 6, 2022 By Dayton937

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced details for its 2022 Art Ballfundraiser, taking place Saturday, June 11. The black-tie gala, a Dayton tradition since 1957, returns after a three-year absence to celebrate its 65th anniversary.

“After canceling the 2020 and 2021 events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are excited to welcome guests back to the museum for the 65th anniversary of Art Ball,” said DAI Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “As one of the museum’s largest annual fundraisers, returning to an in-person event is vital to supporting the DAI’s operating budget.”

This year’s Art Ball continues the long-standing tradition of being themed around an artwork from the Dayton Art Institute collection. For the 65th anniversary, the DAI Associate Board–a volunteer board which assists with the planning and implementation of Art Ball and Oktoberfest–has selected a painting from 1957, Ray Parker’s Summer Afternoon, as the inspiration for this year’s theme, Summer Celebration.

Ray Parker (American, 1922–1990), Summer Afternoon, 1957, oil on canvas. Collection of the Dayton Art Institute, museum purchase, 1958.17

“Through a voting process, the entire Associate Board took part in selecting Parker’s painting as the featured artwork,” Roediger said. “The title and warm colors are a perfect complement to our Summer Celebration theme. It’s also fitting it was painted the same year that first Art Ball began.”

Art Ball traces its roots back to Dayton’s Holiday Ball, which began in 1957. Organized by the Junior League of Dayton, they were held at the DAI, with proceeds benefitting the museum. The Junior League’s event moved to the spring in 1963 and was rechristened Art Ball. In 1965, the DAI’s newly formed Associate Board took over planning and organizing Art Ball.

Art Ball begins at 7 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by an elegant, seated dinner in the museum galleries. Following dinner, guests enjoy live music, dancing, open bars, specialty martinis, liqueurs and much more. An extra-cost VIP Cocktail Hour will offer early entry to Art Ball for a private reception at 6:30 p.m., with high-end wines and hors d’oeuvres.

Advance reservations are required for Art Ball and attendance is limited. For more information about reservations and to request an invitation, contact Sponsorship and Special Events Manager Mike Griest, at [email protected].

Art Ball also includes a Grand Draw Raffle as part of its fundraising efforts. Only 600 tickets will be sold for $100 each, with the chance to win prize packages valued at $1,000–$4,000, including exquisite jewelry items, as well as spa, restaurant, gym, adventure and travel prize packages. Ticket holders need not be present at Art Ball to win. Those purchasing three or more raffle tickets get one free Oktoberfest Preview Party ticket.

Grand Draw Raffle tickets may be purchased online beginning Monday, April 11. They may be purchased by phone, at 937-223-4278, or in person at the museum during regular hours beginning Wednesday, April 13. For more information about the Grand Draw Raffle and to purchase tickets online, go towww.daytonartinstitute.org/raffle.

“Having successfully relaunched Oktoberfest last fall with COVID safety measures in place, it is important that we also resume this fundraiser, and do so in a safe and responsible manner,” Roediger said. “Museum leadership has closely followed the scientific data throughout the pandemic and feels it is safe to go forward with a traditional Art Ball.  We will continue to watch the virus data and adjust accordingly.

All proceeds from Art Ball help benefit operations at the Dayton Art Institute.
