It’s National Chicken Wing Day!

July 22, 2022 By Dayton937

Buffalo, New York lays claim to the birthplace of the chicken wing and that’s why they are often called Buffalo wings as well. The story goes that Teressa Bellissimo created chicken wings at the Anchor Bar, which she owned with her husband Frank, when her son Dominic and some of his college friends decided they wanted a late night bite to eat. She wanted a fast and easy dish so she deep-fried some chicken wings, which in 1964 were usually reserved for soup stock. She tossed them in butter and hot sauce. Naturally, they were an instant hit

Chicken wing prices are finally declining after being hit by inflation and increased consumer demand during the pandemic. So it’s a great time to enjoy some wings!

McCoy on Movies: The Gray Man

July 22, 2022 By Tabari McCoy

Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans star in the Russo’ brothers shootout-heavy live-action video game that isn’t one

“Say something else about Drive and you’re gonna get it!” Six (Ryan Gosling) in a scene from Anthony and Joe Russo’s action thriller THE GRAY MAN. © 2022 Netflix. All rights reserved.
WATCH THE TRAILER HERE:

DIRECTOR: Anthony and Joe Russo

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Billy Bob Thornton, Regé-Jean Page, Ana de Armas, Dhanush, Jessica Henwick, Alfre Woodard and Julia Butters

WEB SITE: https://www.netflix.com/title/81160697
THE BACK STORY: Based on the novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, THE GRAY MAN stars Ryan Gosling as Six. Serving time in a Florida prison, he is offered a chance to leave by the mysterious Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) … But there’s a catch: He must work for the FBI as an assassin called in to take out the worst of the worst – but as a shadow operative, working “in the gray” allows them to disavow any knowledge of his existence.
After a job goes sideways, however, Six learns that what he thought he knew to be true may not exactly be the truth – and now, his life may be in danger as a result. So once he starts digging for answers, CIA Director Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page) starts intensifying his efforts to stop him – which results in bringing in the loosest canon possible: Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a washout of the same program that birthed Six. Lloyd is determined to bring down Six by any means necessary … And if that means involving Six’s former partner (Ana de Armas), Fitzroy or even Fitzroy’s niece Claire (Julia Butters) in his scheme, so be it.
But Six is going to do whatever he has to do to survive and protect those closest to him, no matter how high the body count may be.
THE REVIEW: Ever wonder what would happen if you could make a movie that was 1/2 standard spy thriller and 1/2 a live action video game with guns a’blazing? Well, if so, THE GRAY MAN – which by its end feels like an AR-15 lovers’ best dream – delivers on that premise exponentially.
Gosling does the thing you would expect him to do fairly well, mixing his “I’m good looking, but I can be serious and brooding” thing well against Evans’ absolute playful yet psychopathic Lloyd. If there was ever a role to make people not just think of him as Steve Rogers’ alter-ego, this would be it as Captain America would likely vomit in disgust at what Lloyd does from the moment he gets on screen to the final credits. The ladies of THE GRAY MAN get in their fair share of moments as well, be it de Armas in the standard sexy-yet-serious-and-troubled foreign spy operative you’re not supposed to be sure of who’s side she’s on or young Butters in the too smart for her own age until gunplay starts Dakota Fanning/Man on Fire role.

Seriously though: THE GRAY MAN‘s tonal shift from worldwide spy thriller to live-action video game is so dramatic that it almost – almost – becomes comically enjoyable. Then again, in a country where 330-plus mass shootings have occurred this year, it might be either the best-or-worst timed release this summer. Having not read the source material, I cannot speak to whether or not the novel on which THE GRAY MAN is as standard issue as it is on film, but once the bullets start flying and body count piles up sky-high, it really doesn’t matter.

What will matter is how much you enjoy watching good-looking people in wild, crazy shootouts (replace the cars in the Fast & Furious franchise with bullets) … And given its mix of humor and gunplay coupled with our current national vibe, THE GRAY MAN will likely add up to plenty of views in theaters and streaming smart devices nationwide.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Dayton City Commission Approves Automatic License Plate Readers

July 21, 2022 By Dayton937

Yesterday, the Dayton City Commission held its first public hearing to consider new police surveillance technology under an ordinance adopted in May 2021. The Commission approved the use of automatic license plate reader technology under the provisions set forth in the ordinance, which requires public notification and a public hearing before Dayton Police can acquire, use, or share data from technology that collects personally identifiable information.
Commissioner Matt Joseph led the process to write the 2021 ordinance and made this statement regarding its first usage: “I am glad we were able to put this innovative legislation into use in order to give citizens the opportunity to share their opinions of automatic license plate readers. We are certainly still refining this process and expect it to evolve moving forward. But I am very pleased that the City of Dayton has such a robust process in place to make sure that the Commission can fully weigh all of the implications of using surveillance technology and ensure that proper safeguards are in place.”
Dayton was the 20th municipality in the country to pass an ordinance laying out a public process to approve police surveillance technology. The ordinance was written in collaboration with community stakeholders and privacy advocates and passed unanimously.
The ordinance required Dayton Police to produce a surveillance impact report and a proposed use policy for the technology that was presented to the public 30 days prior to the public hearing. The City Commission then received written public comments and citizen comments at the July 20 public hearing prior to making a decision. The City Commission voted 3-2 to approve.
“This is an example of democracy at work,” said Chief Kamran Afzal. The ordinance and the process that it lays out for approval of use of new technology requires checks and balances. This allows the City and police department to bring a new tool on board with the community’s assistance, so we are working with them toward impacting crime.”
Prior to activating the mobile ALPRs, the Dayton Police Department will be conducting a close review of the concerns brought forward to the City Commission Wednesday evening. Chief Afzal will have discussions with his senior command staff to reflect on the points made and make sure the policy surrounding ALPRs is successful in the future.
If changes are made, the City and the police department will announce them publicly. There will also be announcements released to news media and City social media channels when the mobile ALPRs are scheduled to go live.
The process of using fixed-site ALPRs is much more involved than the mobile units. The Dayton Police Department will work closely with neighborhood partners and the Community Engagement Division to develop unique neighborhood safety plans. That process will allow identification of the needs surrounding neighborhood concerns and determine the best response strategies. If fixed-site ALPRs are one of the tools selected, then the procurement process will begin.

This Summer, a Once-in-a-Half-Century Party Calls Neighbors Back to South Park

July 21, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

The 2001 Rehabarama of “The Weis-Leissentritt House” at 307 Oak Street was once two houses. These 1800s-era homes were updated with a unique glass-walled passageway to create one classic home with warm, comfortable living space and bold design statements.

With music, food, storytelling, and a beer garden, South Park’s Reunion Block Party celebrates its 40-year struggle to become safe, livable and inviting.
DAYTON, Oh. July 7, 2022 – On Saturday, July 30, from 3-6pm, a massive meet-up of neighbors who live in South Park or have called it home over the past forty years will gather to mark the 40-year anniversary of becoming Dayton’s largest Historic District.

In 1981, South Park’s historic landmark designation gave neighbors powerful leverage to reverse blight, combat slumlords, and drive out crime. It launched South Park’s evolution from a neighborhood of last resort to a desirable place to live.

“It’s been quite a journey,” shares Mark Manovich, president of the Historic South Park neighborhood council. “When my wife Karin and I moved here in 1992, it was known to be rough. The parents of our kids’ school friends wouldn’t allow them to come here for playdates.”

ut even then, Mark recalls, it was unpretentious and friendly with that “we’re all in this together” camaraderie. Many neighbors have become lifelong friends after bonding over alley sweeps, beautification projects, old-house repairs, grant-writing, crime-fighting, but most of all the parties.

“We have a reputation for our parties,” says event coordinator Karin Manovich. “We’ve got great stories and before-and-after pictures to share at the Reunion, along with food and drink from South Park’s own establishments.” Even the sponsoring organizations were founded by South Parkers – Square One Salon & Spa, The Brightside Venue, and The Rubi Girls.

The sense of community in South Park has always been as unique as its built environment. It brings people closer. This 150-acre area south of downtown Dayton includes 800 structures, circa 1880 to 1900, designed for people from all walks of life. “There’s no other neighborhood that we know of with housing stock like this that attracts such interesting and diverse people. Tiny cottages next to big showy Victorians, corner storefronts, and everything in between,” says Karin.

The 2001 Rehabarama of “The Weis-Leissentritt House” at 307 Oak Street was once two houses. These 1800s-era homes were updated with a unique glass-walled passageway to create one classic home with warm, comfortable living space and bold design statements.

As with any inner neighborhood, South Park’s work continues. But it’s time to hit pause and celebrate. Says Karin, “We want everyone to enjoy their share of credit for taking a chance, investing the sweat, money and emotion it takes to create a neighborhood that feels like family.”

HOW TO CELEBRATE: Plan to meet up with old friends and neighbors, bring a lawn chair, enjoy the party, take a stroll, and congratulate yourself for helping make South Park a place to live kindly, fearlessly, and prosperously.

Who: South Parkers past and present, and all who have contributed to the neighborhood’s recovery (City staff, contractors, Rehabarama partners, AIA architects, former Community Based Police Officers, preservationists, patrons of our tours, plays and festivals) and those interested in the neighborhood today.

What: South Park Reunion Block Party is a free event presented by the Historic South Park neighborhood council, Square One Salon & Spa, The Brightside Venue, and The Rubi Girls.

When: Saturday, July 30, 3-6pm

Where:  The Gazebo and Boulevard at Park Drive (near Wayne Avenue). Park at Oak Street Health (Wayne & Wyoming), Hope Lutheran Church and Emerson Academy (both at Perrine & Hickory).

Wright Dunbar Food Hall to Open Mon, July 25th

July 20, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton’s first-ever food hall development is revitalizing the Historic Wright and Dunbar District, and bringing opportunities to the community, will officially open its doors to the public on July 25th at 7 am for coffee and Soca will offer breakfast options followed by lunch from all restaurants starting at 11 am. The six- restaurant collective is made up of Illy’s Fire Pizza, The Lumpia Queen, De’lish, Grind House Coffee Co, Soca, and Taco Street Co- along with an operating bar. Each of these businesses offers diverse cuisine and a unique concept.

Grind House Coffee Co

“West Social Tap and Table operations have been in progress since 2020, and the perseverance is finally paying off”, says Cheryl Dillin, Chief Brand Officer with Dillin, LLC, the managing partner of the building. “We have developed a very special bond with our tenants, and while it may seem like an unlikely famILLY (referring to ILLY’s Pizza and their branding of famILLY), the respect and admiration I have for these entrepreneurs and the steps they are taking to make their neighborhood what they want it to be is the definition of strong, brave and honorable – true community famILLY in its highest form. I am proud to be their partner and my heart will sincerely smile watching them succeed.”

ILLY’s Pizza

The Food Hall property is a 6,400 sq feet space located across the street from the National Aviation Heritage Museum at 1100 W. Third Street. Dillin, Financial, Clous Road Partners, and Wright and Dunbar Inc are partners in real estate. Total development costs were over $2 million dollars. This project is the first phase in a planned series of Opportunity Zone investments within the City of Dayton. The projects aim to enrich the area and bring business opportunities to the people in the community. Dillin/Clous are renovating three additional buildings on 3rd street in the Wright Dunbar neighborhood

W. Social’s purpose is to support the local community in a grassroots operation. This social space cultivates a sense of community by bringing local small businesses to an area that is otherwise a food desert. It creates a space where the neighborhood can gather and socialize.

SOCA

The restaurants will operate 7 days a week from 7 am to 10 pm. Limited Breakfast, Full lunch, dinner, and drinks will be available every day- and special menu items will be offered on occasion. This space will also hold events including “The West Social Block Party” on August 5th. These events will include live music, food and drinks, additional vendors, open invite guest lists -and partial revenue generated towards donations. The entire community is enthusiastically welcomed. WestSocialTapAndTable.com will have the latest up-to-date restaurants, ordering information, menu, hours and special events.

John Gower, the president of Wright-Dunbar Inc, said “West Social helps to elevate the concept of West Third Street as a West Dayton Creative Corridor. Leveraging passion, vision, need, diversity, tenacity, and love with Social Entrepreneurship. This is another piece of the amenity puzzle that will support neighborhood growth and development in West Dayton.” John is a citizen of West Dayton, and he is very invested in creating prosperity in the neighborhood. “Although the food hall is a single building, the impact that it will have on the people involved will be enormous. Together with our tenants, we see the potential of the neighborhood and we are willing to invest to see it thrive.” added Larry Dillin. “It is always our goal to enrich the neighborhoods beyond the borders of our projects.”

The tenants in the space all started as small food trucks, now expanding their brand and physical location to be a part of W. Social. Anthony Thomas from Taco Street Co. states “I am excited to bring life to the Wright Dunbar area.” while Bill from Grind House Coffee Co. explained that “West Social solves the (food desert) issue with the best brands in the city.” Cathy Roberts, co-owner of Lumpia Queen expanded on that idea by stating “the food hall is an opportunity to work alongside amazing people and cuisines.”

De’Lish

Despite the obstacles faced throughout the developmental stages of the project- Rob Barry, the general manager, has stepped up to make this opening possible. He exclaimed “I am so excited to be part of an amazing team! Everyone has worked so hard for this moment and we cannot wait to bring delicious food, amazing cocktails, and fresh coffee to this great community.”

West Social Tap and Table is the next step of the revitalization process of Dayton’s Wright and
Dunbar Historic District. It will bring vibrant social life to the community by offering a unique experience for its customers. The opening is coming on July 25th- and a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Mims will take place at 11am. A Grand Opening Block party will be held on Friday, August 5th. It is open to the public and will include live music and additional neighborhood food trucks.

The Circus is Coming To Ren Park

July 20, 2022 By Dayton937

Ladies & gentlemen! Boys and girls! Plus, everyone in between! Step right up and get ready to experience ‘One of the Greatest Shows on Earth.’

Renaissance Park Event Center proudly presents the 20th Century Circus, an inspiring, family-friendly event that will give audiences young and old a night to forever remember. The 20th Century Circus is one of the last touring tented circuses in the United States. Set in the era of the 1920s, the show brings old-world circus skills from second-generation circus performers and acclaimed acts from the Vegas strip together to create one and a half hours of entertainment.

Shows will be Friday, Saturday, Sunday July 22nd thru August 7th. One show per day at 7pm. For more information and ticket sales visit www.20thcenturycircus.com.

Many have described the 20th Century Circus as bringing back great memories, introducing youngsters to days gone by with a modern twist. The show is fun, frolicking, and ‘in-tents.’

Renaissance Park Event Center is locally owned and operated located in rural Warren County, near Waynesville and Caesar Creek State Park.  With beautiful, landscaped venues, Renaissance Park is just far enough from the hustle and bustle to be quiet and private, yet close enough to be convenient to hotels, shopping, restaurants, and other entertainment while you are visiting.

City of Dayton Housing issues Can Be Monitored Online

July 18, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton residents and property owners can now monitor the progress of reported housing issues on a newly launched online portal found here.  Housing complaints may be found by entering an address or by clicking on locations displayed on an interactive map.

The tracker displays the nature of the housing issue, the date of the original complaint, the actions taken by City staff and more information. The records displayed on the tracker are drawn from several City of Dayton sources including the Dayton Delivers customer service app and internal databases.

In order to begin a complaint, customers are advised to use the Dayton Delivers app or to call 937-333-4800. Only reported complaints are displayed on the housing tracker.v”We want to make it much easier for neighborhood residents, property owners and others to find the status of reported housing issues,” said Todd Kinskey, Director of Planning, Neighborhoods & Development. “The housing tracker pulls together data from a number of sources to make that happen.”

The Newest Graeter’s Ice Cream Flavor is Here

July 18, 2022 By Dayton937

Graeter’s Ice Cream has release its fourth bonus flavor of the summer Candy Bar Chip.

Their description of this sweet treat is  peanut nougat ice cream with candied peanuts and milk chocolate chips.

Graeter’s has a summer tradition of releasing these bonus flavors for a limited time. Previously this summer they’ve offered Strawberry Cheesecake, Frozen Hot Chocolate  and Churro.  As with all the bonus flavors, they make one batch, release them and when they are gone they retire the flavor. We expect one more bonus flavor to come out in August.
