Improv Comedy Show at The Fraze

July 16, 2022 By Dayton937

Prepare to laugh until you cry when six of the world’s most masterful improv artists take you on the high wire act of comedic acrobatics. The rapid-fire wit and non-stop jokes will have your sides splitting and begging for mercy…and also begging for more. If you are a “Whose Line?” fan, get ready for the same relentless laughter that you grew to love, but without the commercial breaks! If you are new to improv comedy, then you are in for a show unlike anything you have ever seen before.

This particular style of improvisational comedy is rife with countless gags, one-liners, hilarious games and even songs so good you will hardly believe they were made up on the spot. The teamwork and trust that it takes to perform a show with no script is apparent, but when the best of the best do it, they do it effortlessly.

New Fresh Pasta Vendor Opens at 2nd Street Market

July 16, 2022 By Dayton937

Jody Miller, the owner of Brocato’s Pasta Company, follows a legacy of good food. His great, great grandfather, Joseph Brocato, came to America from Sicily as an infant in the early 1900s. Although Joseph became involved in many glamorous entrepreneurial endeavors, he always wanted the Brocato family to come together for Sunday dinner.Preparation started early in the morning with every family member playing a role. From collecting eggs in the chicken coop to picking vine-ripened tomatoes, the freshest ingredients meant the most flavor and the time with each other was cherished.

Generations later Jody continues to carry on this important tradition of using fresh, local ingredients and enjoying good food together.  After earning his culinary degree and working as an executive chef, in 2007 Jody embarked on his own hand-crafted pasta business. He teamed up with his mother, Renee Bouchard Miller, and started selling his pasta products through her storefront, Bouchard’s Baked Goods, in Findlay Market.

He just recently opened a stall at the 2nd Street Market offering pasta made from using old-world techniques and fresh ingredients. The recipes trace back to Sicily, but you can taste the modern twist in the wide selection of flavors.   You’ll find it hard to choose since each batch of pasta, sauce, pesto, and butter is made by hand, ensuring the highest quality and best-tasting food that you can possibly put on your table.

Lynyrd Skynyrd At Fraze Sun Night

July 16, 2022 By Dayton937

The legacy began some 41 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson, yet Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.

And so Skynyrd stands, “still unbroken.” “People may say, ‘they need the money,’ well I don’t think any of us need the money,” Van Zant says. “It’s just that we love the music, it’s bigger than the money, it’s not even about that any more. We have to make a living, sure, but it’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”

Adds Rossington, “We’re still standing, still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.”

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

Chris’s decades of experience in the wine industry makes him one of the preeminent experts in his field.

All of the sudden a huge platter of taquitos de cochinita would arrive out of the kitchen and we all stop what we’re doing to grab handfuls of tacos. I remember biting into them and watching the golden, orange grease dripping down my elbows. It’s one of the fondest memories I have.”

New Event Space Downtown

July 15, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

After years of planning (covid slowed things down) The Century Upstairs was finally revealed in an open house last night. “A unique, industrial-edgy vibe with a blank canvas interior,” is how they are describing the contemporary event space.

Last night it was staged for 70 by Prime Time Party Supply and Unlimited Events with still plenty of room for a charcuterie table, cake table and more. The room will hold up to 100 guests.

The room has beautiful hardwood floors, lofty ceilings and is accessible by stairs or elevator. Guest that rent the space can choose their own caterer and there is a staging kitchen area. Full bar service is available and packages start at $25/person for 2 hours.   You can even book a bourbon experience tasting with co-owner JoeHead.

If you are interested in booking the venue, please contact Bill Thomas or by phone at 937-620-6417.

The Contemporary Dayton Receives Prestigious Grant

July 13, 2022 By Dayton937

The Contemporary Dayton (The Co) announced that it is a first-time recipient of the prestigious Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Spring 2022 grant. The Co was selected as one of 50 organizations—and as one of only 19 of those being first-time recipients—that was awarded a part of the $3.9 million grant that was dispersed. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts seeks out creative risk-takers that are continually supporting the needs of artists in their communities in resourceful ways and will provide The Co with $80,00 in funding spread over the next two years to support their rotating exhibitions and expanded educational programs.

Michael Goodson

“We are honored to be recognized by this august and noble organization,” says Michael Goodson, Curator and Director of Programs at The Co. “The entire staff at The Contemporary Dayton started, in earnest, a shift in exhibitions, programming, philosophy, and mission in the summer of 2020. Amid the tumult of that time, our vision was clear that one of our first goals was to garner an Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts grant.” Goodson recalls that “at the time the idea seemed so far ahead of us; a year later much closer. And now, it has been announced. While this funding is crucial to our vision and mission, the trust and belief that the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has in The Contemporary Dayton is equally important.”

“The Contemporary Dayton is an important point of connection and exchange for artists and audiences in the region,” said Rachel Bers, Program Director, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. “We are pleased to support its exhibitions and public programs that situate local artistic practices within global contemporary art discourse and create space for critical engagement with issues relevant to its immediate community.”

The Co’s three distinct galleries plus the CoSHOP at the Dayton Arcade are always free and open to the public. Exhibitions and educational programs feature artists living and working today, both nationally and in Ohio, with an emphasis on those whose work focuses on the ideas, concepts, and issues of contemporary life.

The “After the Levitt” event series is a live musical experience in the Arcade, which is the hottest and most coveted space in downtown Dayton. Under the Arcade’s famous Rotunda is a newly opened underground event space, called The Tank, inspired by CenterPoint Energy. It’s a vibrant venue that provides a cool, theater-in-the-round style seating for an intimate audience experience.

After a few select Levitt Pavilion shows this summer, The Tank opens its doors for this “After the Levitt” live music series which features up-and-coming original musicians. For music fans who want to keep the music going, the Tank’s entrance is just a half block from Levitt Pavilion. It’s an easy walk over! The cover charge is $10 and is open to patrons over 18. Doors open at 8pm. The music starts at 8:30pm. Beverages are available for purchase at the venue.

“As the leading Arts advocate in Dayton, Culture Works aims to use the After the Levitt series as a way of activating the Arcade, and more specifically, the Tank. We want to bring cultural vibrancy back into Dayton through a space that is both new and nostalgic, memorable, and magical. Downtown Art Gallery Finds A New Home

July 12, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Come August 1st, the Edward A. Dixon Gallery, a commercial art gallery specializing in the exhibition, education, appreciation and sale of International Fine Art, will have a new home in the Opal building on N St Clair Street.

Dixon, who opened his first Dayton gallery in 2017, says he always was going to galleries and museum when he traveled and wanted to bring something that looked more like the places he was going to Dayton.

Dixon said a lot of the success of his original gallery was the ability to do events and bring people together around art.  But then the pandemic hit and his lease was up for renewal and he just wasn’t willing to take that risk knowing in person events weren’t going to happen, so he downsized to a small spot in the Talbot Tower and a bigger online presence.

Color Photograph of Dr. King (at the podium) by Bernie Kleina

He’d been keeping his eye out for a new space and when he saw the Opal building space it just spoke to him.  Just a block away from the river and built in 1900, he could already envision what his gallery would look like there. He’s excited to be able to share art from both locals and artists from around the world to the  the Dayton art scene.

Mother and Child in a Flower Field by Patrick Gono

The art you’ll find in his gallery is eclectic and ever changing. Currently you’ll find a selection of photograhs from Bernie Kleina, a civil rights and fair housing advocate. He has produced some of the most innovative and powerful audio-visual presentations on fair and affordable housing in the country. His photographic archive includes profound images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Al Raby, Dick Gregory, and others.

You’ll also find pieces from Patrick Gono of Monrovia, Liberia who did a residency in Dayton in 2019.  is in Dayton as an artist-in-residence. He created a mural on a Front Street building, while he as here, that was  the result of his visit to Sunwatch Indian Village.

You’ll also find art by Syndey, Oh artist Maureen O’Keefe. The work pictured here   is part of a series of American flags meant to explore her own struggle to come to terms with the diversity of thought in our nation. The background features lyrics from the Woody Guthrie song “This Land Is Your Land.”

Dixon looks forward to welcoming guest back to his gallery with his grand opening on August’s First Friday celebration downtown.  His space will be available for rent for special events and he’s busy planning special exhibits for the fall. He’s currently got a call for entries out for an October exhibit he’ll be doing entitled FOCUS CAPTURE INSPIRE.

The 2nd Annual We’re Doing It ALL Wrong® Art Exhibition will open as a one month long exhibition beginning September 1, 2022. The exhibition seeks to create dialogue and spark ideas related to the many ways humanity continually fails itself.  Artwork from the previous year’s exhibition touched on topics such as the environment & climate change, dependence on technology, social injustice, Native American women disappearances and homelessness.  Many of these ways are discussed in main stream media; some only on social media and small gatherings; while others are barely spoken or purposely kept unspoken.  Artists are encouraged to submit work that captures or is a comment on a tradition, a system, a practice, an institution or anything they see that needs repair or removal that has existed in this state for far too long.  View the online version of the previous exhibition at weredoingitallwrong.com.

Another ambitious goal of the exhibition is to find a signature piece or pieces of artwork that while keeping to the exhibition’s theme defines our current period in history from the artist’s viewpoint.  One art piece can tell so many stories and the goal is to find pieces that will speak to future generations and tell a story about our time.

Award Categories Include:

  • Best in Show – $500 Prize
  • 2nd Place – $250 Prize
  • Signature Artwork – $250 Prize
