Coffee Shop Brings Back Music After Hours

When it first opened at its Historic Wayne Avenue location, Ghostlight Coffee was known for staying open late, rearranging the seats, and creating a local music scene of its own. Now, over 10 years later, the team at Ghostlight is bringing live music back to their Wayne Avenue shop as a part of their continue efforts to support local artists and build community.

The first Ghostlight After Hours show will take place this Friday, February 3, featuring local singer-songwriter Emi. moving forward, the team aims to host After Hours every other Friday featuring different local musicians. A variety of zero-proof drinks and cocktails will be available via The Bottleshop by Ghostlight as well as a limited coffee menu. The coffee shop will close for regular service at 4pm and reopen for After Hours at 6:30pm.

“My name is Emi, I’m a Dayton local Singer/Songwriter. For me, music is primarily therapeutic. I travel to the introspective landscape of my anxiety and depression and mix it up with an upbeat indie-pop vibe.

I’m inspired by artists like half•alive, Death Cab for Cutie, Cage the Elephant, and Tessa Violet. And I shamelessly still listen to some early 2000’s Pop hits.

 

I’ll be performing a collection of some favorites from artists that have influenced me over the years, peppered in with a few originals to spice it up a bit!”

Mike-Sells To Close

The rumors are true. Mikesell’s is closing down it’s operations. A spokesperson has said they are “wind-down its manufacturing, distribution, and administrative operations to proceed with an orderly liquidation of its assets.” The liquidation of its assets will begin immediately and continue over the next several months.

“Although the terms have not yet been finalized, we understand the desire to keep products available, and are working to facilitate the necessary conversations for approvals that will allow for an uninterrupted supply of Mikesell’s products,” that same spokesperson said.

“To continue to protect the Mikesell’s brand, so it can remain viable in the market and continue to move forward, Mikesell’s is announcing that it intends to transition all Mikesell’s brand and IP rights to another quality snack food manufacturer, as soon as possible,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.

“The Mikesell’s family and team wish to thank the community, consumers and partners for their love and support over the past 112+ years,” shares Luke Mapp, President of Mikesell’s. “Our family will long remember the fan love, the friendships and the wins along the way the most.”

Mikesell’s History:

D.W. Mikesell and his wife operated a business selling dried beef and sausages from two rooms on South Williams Street in Dayton, Ohio. Then came the opportunity to buy some potato chip equipment and the Mikesell’s Potato Chip Company was born.

 

1925

The Mikesell Company saw a need for a unique logo. It was decided that a “play on words” using the Mikesell name should be used. A hyphen was added making the trademarked Mike-sell’s name. The hyphen remained for over 85 years.

1955

D.W. Mikesell and Guy Lombardo are pictured here tasting a chip right off the conveyer belt. Lombardo exclaimed that the chips were “Music to his Mouth.” In the 1950s, the chips were put into cellophane and glassine bags before they lost any of their crisp flavor. Today, the materials have changed, but the freshness and quality remains the same.

1965

Daniel W. Mikesell passes away at the age of 82.

1987

1987 was an historic year for Mikesell’s fans across the country. With the introduction of the Chipper Shipper program, fans from all over could order direct and have them shipped to their door.

2010

We had a very solid weekend at THE NEON with nice, steady business for all screenings. Thanks to everyone who came out to support our 2 big Academy Award contenders – LIVING and WOMEN TALKING – as well as CAROLE KING: HOME AGAIN. It felt great to have so many people enjoying films with us. Both films are going to stick around for another week, and you still have a chance to see CAROLE KING this evening if you missed it on Sunday.

“Open Caption Mondays” continue to be well-received. On Monday, Feb. 6, WOMEN TALKING and LIVING will be presented with Open Captions. As a reminder, seating is no longer assigned on Mondays-Thursdays for traditional engagements.

“On February 9, 2023, at 6:00 pm, The Miami Valley School will present PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR: BEYOND THE MASK. The filmmaker, Frederick Lewis, a professor at Ohio University, will be on hand to introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion. The screening, which is presented through The Miami Valley School’s Speaker Series, is free and open to the public. Interested guests may register online at this LINK. BEYOND THE MASK is a feature-length documentary on the life and legacy of the first African American poet/writer to gain international fame. Born to former slaves in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) is best remembered for his poem “We Wear The Mask” and for lines from “Sympathy” that became the title of Maya Angelou’s famous autobiography I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS. Among so many surprises with this year’s Academy Award nominations was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough for “Best Actress” in a film called TO LESLIE. We think this film is worth seeing on the big screen…not only because of Riseborough’s incredible performance, but because it also stars Dayton’s own Allison Janney. LEAD ME HOME is a short documentary (40 minutes) that tells these real-life stories giving audiences a rare, in-depth look at the scale, scope and diversity of what it means to be unsheltered and unhoused while calling into question uninformed attitudes and outmoded polices. After watching the film, the audience will hear from members of our community facing housing insecurity and have an opportunity to learn more about what we can do as a community around housing justice. In lieu of an entrance fee, we are collecting donations of socks and toiletries for the unhoused in our community. Donations will be given to St. Vincent Shelter.
