Plan a Cincinnati Dinner Train Excursion

January 31, 2024 By Dayton937

The Cincinnati Dinner Train features dining  four finely restored 1950’s era dining cars. The public dinner train operates every Saturday throughout the year, with the exception of January and February. Reserved seat tickets are sold in advance and will be held at check-in the day of the excursion.

Tickets for March, April, & May 2024 can be purchased online as of 10:00am this Thurs, February 1st . Using the website gets you to the front of the queue quicker than phone orders.

The public dinner train operates every Saturday throughout the year, with the exception of January and February. Reserved seat tickets are sold in advance and will be held at check-in the day of the excursion.

The dinner train departs from the rear parking lot of the Green Sales Company located at 2172 E. Seymour Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45237.  Look for the directional signs on the telephone poles and the sandwich board street signs.  Passengers can enjoy free guarded parking in the open lot provided.

The train will depart promptly at 6:00 PM and travel to the downtown Cincinnati riverfront. Here our locomotive will reverse our route back to our boarding area. The excursion lasts a total of 3.2 hours.  Check in begins approximately 60 minutes prior to departure.  Please make your reservation at least 8 to 10 weeks in advance of desired date as most excursions sell out months in advance.  The reservation office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

On board, they will serve four courses with choices of Prime Rib, Salmon with a Mild Hoisin Glaze or Boneless Chicken Breast sautéed in white wine sauce.  Your entree will be accompanied by appetizer, salad, vegetable, baked potato, choice of dessert, water, iced tea, and coffee.  Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free options available.

Almost all tables seat up to four people, with the exception of eight tables that seat just two people.  Large restrooms are available in the Milwaukee Road car with a unisex restroom in the Silver Sword.  The newly added 1950 Oasis Tavern bar & lounge car also features just four tables in the rear of the train for a more secluded dining experience.  A women’s restroom and a unisex restroom can also be found in this car.

A business casual dress code is strictly enforced.  Blue jeans are discouraged.  Shorts, flip flop or thong sandals, and sleeveless t-shirts are not permitted. They strongly encourage passengers to get into the swing of things by dressing in their best 1940’s vintage clothing.  Although not required, it sure makes it fun for everyone when couples show up looking as if they stepped out of an 1940’s LIFE magazine.

Returning again this season are the fabulous Queen City Sisters, a 1940’s Andrews sisters trio. Edy and the girls perform as you board and then sing two songs in your dining car before salads are served. Following dinner, the sisters perform on their own stage in the Oasis Tavern all the way back to our departure area. Their delightful sounds from the 1940’s and early 50’s will take you back to a much simpler time.

Ticket prices are $120.00 per person age 12 and above.  Children under the age of 12 are not permitted on board.  Prices do not include tax, gratuity, or purchases from the bar car.   If traditional Pullman railroad dining with a fellow traveling couple is not your bag, upgrade to a private table by purchasing the entire table.  Our servers and conductors look forward to serving you as we all step back into the nostalgic and less complex times of the late 1940’s. There’s nothing like dining on white table clothed tables while watching the scenery slowly go by, as your dining car gently meanders down the track.

WYSO Receives $5 Million Grant

January 31, 2024 By Dayton937

For the fourth time in as many years, WYSO has been awarded major funding from the Mellon Foundation to support The HBCU Radio Preservation Project. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the WYSO Archives and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), supports radio stations at Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the country in preserving their legacies and cultural heritage.

With this latest grant, Mellon’s generous support now totals more than $5.6 million and will allow the HBCU Radio Preservation Project to expand to all 29 HBCU radio stations and their campus archives or libraries.

“This is sacred work,” says Jocelyn Robinson (pictured above), the project’s founding director and the director of radio preservation and archives at WYSO. “And now we can help every HBCU station save precious primary recordings and other historical source materials that document the diversity of the Black experience. And we’re not just preventing the loss of invaluable historical records—we’re encouraging institutions in developing a culture and practice of preservation. That will ensure they never face the looming preservation crisis this project was created to prevent.”

The project’s comprehensive and sustainable approach to preserving past, present and future HBCU radio materials has three parts:

Preservation Training & Education—includes workshops for campus stations, archivists and community members, mini-grants for professional development and hiring a fellow and intern each year of the grant cycle

Preservation—consists of eld archivists collaborating with stations and campus archivists on collections assessments and follow-up eld services such as inventories, reformatting, rehousing and other preservation activities

Public History & Preservation Praxis—consists of oral historians interviewing a range of community members with ties to respective stations, including former radio sta, students, alumni and listeners as well as oral history training, digital content creation, frequent public presentations and annual symposia

As a result of the HBCU Radio Preservation Project work with HBCU radio stations and their campus communities, a collection of reformatted historical HBCU radio material will available at the American Archive of Public Broadcasting along with an oral history collection that will be housed at Jackson State University’s Margaret Walker Center.

The HBCU Radio Preservation Project will ocially kick o this next phase of work on February 1, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Members of the HBCU and preservation communities and their supporters are invited to attend this free Zoom event by registering at: HBCU Radio Preservation Project Kick-o.

Arcade Awarded $13.9 Million Tax Credit

January 30, 2024 By Dayton937

The team behind the Dayton Arcade is thrilled to announce that the team has been awarded a $13.9 million tax credit from Ohio’s Transformational Mixed-Use Development (TMUD) Program for the Dayton Arcade District project, helping to further catalyze the on-going revitalization of downtown Dayton within the Arcade District.

The Arcade District Development represents over $200 Million of investment in what was originally 10 historic buildings, spanning two city blocks and over 810,000 SF in the City of Dayton’s central business district. The first phase of the development, South Arcade Phase 1, commenced construction in April 2019 with the first tenancy in early 2021. In seeing the overall vision of the Arcade District, and touring the completed first phase, Bruce Katz, the widely acclaimed urban expert, declared the Arcade as “the most transformative project in America”.

This TMUD award is critical to completing the next $139.8 Million portion of the Arcade District Development, which encompasses the following phases:

• South Arcade Phase 2: This $12.2 Million phase will complete the overall 265,000 GSF South Arcade development including the expansion of the Arcade Innovation Hub, 6888 Kitchen Incubator, Artist Resource Center, and space for multiple restaurants.
• North Arcade: This $23.3 Million 108,000 GSF phase to complete the 94-bed Hilton Garden Inn, pop- up retail, and neighboring Stop-N-Save Grocery.

• Centre City Building: This $91.9 million 283,000 GSF phase including 200 mixed-income apartments, and up to 53,000 square feet of commercial retail and office. In addition to preserving and enhancing a key, architecturally significant landmark in Dayton’s urban core, this project will provide additional quality commercial space and rental housing in the Downtown neighborhood, bringing residents back to this community.

• Air City Garage: This $12.4 million 156,000 GSF phase to provide 380 parking spaces and additional street-level commercial spaces within the district.

“This award is a unique funding opportunity that is geared towards large transformational projects in Ohio. Since its inception, it has only ever been awarded to projects in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland,” said Taylor Vogt, developer with Arcade District partner Model Group. “TMUD was a critical component of the

8th Annual Bloody Mary Showdown – The Quest for Dayton’s Best Bloody Mary

January 28, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Bartenders from Dayton’s bars and restaurants will compete, bringing their own bloody mary mix and garnishes to the table. Guests will have a chance to sample the different cocktails and then vote for their favorite.

Bartenders from Dayton’s bars and restaurants will compete, bringing their own bloody mary mix and garnishes to the table. Guests will have a chance to sample the different cocktails and then vote for their favorite.

At the very first Showdown, held in  MacKenzie Manley took the title.   She described her winning cocktail as Mack’s BBQ Burger Mary- a smokey, hearty, beefed up BBQ bloody mary that has a spicy sriracha  salted rim and garnished with a sweet lil smokey wrapped in yummy caramelized bacon slice.

The next year MacKenzie tied with Scott Conrad, from The Vue Ultralounge. In year 3 Scott took the undisputed  top prize. Since then Conrad has gone on to launch a commercial business selling his award winning RADS Bloody Mary Mix.

In 2019 bartender Jenn Elsass from TJ Chumps in Miamisburg took home top prize thanks to an impressive garnish that included a large shrimp, a deviled egg and a shot of beer back.

In 2020 the winning cocktail was “Papi’s Sassy Bloody Mary” by Vicki Wedworth of Papi Joe’s Tennessee Pepper Sauce Company.

Then that pesky pandemic hit and we took a couple years off.  We came back strong in 2023 with  Loose Ends Brewing Company walking away the winner!

The event takes place this year from noon – 2pm on Sun, Feb 4th at Top of the Market on Webster Street.  There are two options to purchase your judging credential:

Watermark Served Their Last Meal Tonight

January 27, 2024 By Mike Hemmert

Sat., Jan. 27 marks the last Dinner Service for Chef Maria Walusis and her husband Eric at Watermark Restaurant/ Miamisburg. It will be a special evening for a sold out~ 112 patron. Soo many of us have enjoyed the Watermark for the past 9 years.
Open photoAfter Dinner Service, Eric and Maria will be holding a special farewell party to all of their staffs from both Watermark and their sister restaurant~ Backwater Voodoo. We had dinner with our friends on Thursday at Watermark and it was also a packed house. Chef had time (like she always does) to come to our table and visit. You see, we have known Chef since she started making scratch cakes every weekend for Bella Vino’s Wine Bar/ Springboro. Being in the food business myself for soo many years, I knew from the beginning Chef was talented and passionate about one day owning her own Restaurant. More about her background later in the Article.
Open photo

left to right~Gene, Terry Chef Maria, Mike & Barb

Our visit on Thur. started at the bar where on every Thur. they offer $10. off bottles of wine. We enjoyed that with our friends! Chef was able to share with us that they had made their decision in Dec. to not renew their Lease that is expiring. She has been actively looking for another new owner and shared that she is talking to some folks. It has been a rollercoaster Jan. for Chef and her family.

Open photo

Hannah, Michael & Denise

Their daughter Hannah has been working at the restaurant for 5 years. Bartender Denise has been with Maria and Eric on and off since their Soft Opening 9 years ago. Denise is excellent at her craft and personable. We will miss her and Hannah. Michael, one of the Servers has had our table the last 3 times we have been in and we will miss his humor and efficiency.

We look forward to hearing where their path will take them. After handling cakes for Bella Vino’s, Maria met Chef Anne Kearney, owner of Rue Dumaine in Centerville. Maria did a lot of offsite catering with Chef Anne and Chef was mentoring Maria as well. Chef Anne was also a James Beard Award Winner. It does not get any better than that for a mentor! Just like many of us in the food business we are longing to be an Entrepreneur, as we know and experience long hours it is ours…Watermark was born!
According to Chef Maria, the Fine Dining Scene in the Dayton Region has been in somewhat of a downward trend in Sales. Lots of competition and many folks do not have the extra funds to frequent as much as they once did with the economy, inflation and outlook we have all had to deal with. Eric has already started a full time job that he enjoys and the road is wide open for Chef Maria. I bet she is looking forward to some time off with her family!!
Eric and Maria, you will be MISSED and Barb and I look forward to seeing you at the Bella Vino Reunion in March at the Meridian. Cheers to you! 💯

Flyboy’s Deli 11th Anniversary

January 25, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

I was at the ribbon cutting for Flyboy’s Deli on Far Hills Ave inOakwood eleven years ago today.  Owner Steve Cranell shared key points that would differentiate Flyboys Deli.  First their concept-  they’d be a traditional New York style deli, where you order from the menu, as opposed to table service He was also quick to point out that the prices would be affordable and the menu much more extensive.

Fast forward 11 years later, a Beavercreek location that opened in 2018 and closed in 2019, and in June of 2021 they opened up downtown on Patterson Blvd.  In the summer of 2023, owner Steve Crandall, endured a life-altering stroke.  His left side of his body is unresponsive and he recently has been moved to a nursing home and his son- in law shared with us that he is very slowly regaining a bit of movement. His wife Eunice is  recovering from cancer and a broken leg. Due to those circumstances they made the decision to close the downtown location.

Due to the owners health concerns, son-in-law Shaun, who is running the place said they really weren’t planning any celebration.  But he certainly invites you to join them for lunch or dinner.
