Winter Restaurant Week Kicks Off Today

January 21, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

I started Restaurant Week in 2005 when I was president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association as a way to help our local eateries during the slowest month of the year. The promotion offered a 3 course meal for $20.05, playing off the year, with $1/meal going to a local charity.  At one point we had over 50 independent restaurants participating and over 10,000 meals served over the week.  2024 Restaurant Week kicks off tonight, Sun, Jan 21st and runs through next Sun, Jan 28th.

Our tips for making the most out of restaurant week:

*Check the days restaurants are open
*Make reservations when applicable
*Indulge in a great bottle of wine to compliment your meal
*Ask for the Restaurant Week menu if it’s not offered
*Know that menu’s may change based on product availability

Now almost 20 years and while the premise is the same, the costs have certainly changed.  This year three course meals are being offered at about 30 restaurants.  Several of them are still offering meals at $20.24, like Greek Street.  There you can enjoy a Mediterranean Platter -Choice of Chicken or Braised Lamb, Lemon Rice, Village Salad, 2 Keftedes, 2 Dolmades, Tzatziki and a piece of Baklava.  Condado Tacos at The Greene also has a $20.24 meal deal.  Nick’s in Xenia is offering a meal for two for $40.24. One dollar of each meal is donated to the Food Bank and the MVRA Education Foundation.

Coming in on the high end, Manna in Uptown Centervile has 2 of the higher priced offerings  at $60.24
for a Ponzu Salmon or Arrachera de Peru skirt steak. It’s sister restaurant Salar, in the Oregon District has a choice of Grilled Skirt Steak or Seared barramundi 3 course meal for $55.24.  The price range these 3 course meals for 2024 is $20.24-$60.24. Each meal donates $1, which will be split between The Food Bank and the

TheaterLab Presents: [title of show] Musical

January 17, 2024 By Dayton937

[title of show] is a musical about two nobodies named Hunter and Jeff who decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves and their attractive and talented ladyfriends, Susan and Heidi.

Their musical, [title of show], gets into the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and becomes a hit. Then it gets an off-Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre, and wins three Obie Awards! Then (drumroll if you’ve got a drum) it’s announced that their musical is going to Broadway (hooray!) and people start seeing this blurb everywhere! They read that The New York Times called [title of show]“DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line.” Fully intrigued, those people snatch up tickets and help make Hunter and Jeff’s life-long dream come true!

Winter Chick Adventure Weekend

January 15, 2024 By Dayton937

We are excited to announce our “Winter Chick” retreat this January 2024.
“The Big Picture”
This winter wonderland adventure will begin on January 19th at 5:30 p.m. and end on January 21st at 1 pm. This will be a way for all of us to get out and explore all the beauty of this season while, at the same time, learning from others and setting our sites on a fantastic year ahead.
Details:
We will have registration, dinner, and a vision board experience on Friday evening. Following that, we will have campfire smores and hot chocolate around the campfire before going to our heated cabins.
Saturday morning, after an excellent hot breakfast and coffee, we will head to a local metro park within 5 miles for our first hike, which is a two mile, mostly flat trail. We will return to the camp for lunch and a short break after the hike. After lunch, you have two options. The first option is to return to the metro park for a four-mile, more challenging hike with a more diverse terrain. The second option is to stay back at the camp and be led by Melissa Faulkner, PhD, in a creative journaling experience.
Following either the hike or the class, we will all be together for an essential oil make-and-take gift led by our friends at Cedar Ridge Trails. We will also have a book swap and free time to relax or explore.
We will then have dinner and gather back for our evening session after this class. During this time, you will find inspirational stories from women who have overcome difficulties financially, physically, and emotionally. We will wind down this exciting and fun-filled day with a candlelight yoga class before heading to our cabins.
The final morning will start with breakfast, a powerful closing session led by Christina Phillips, MSW, and then we will head to a different trail for our last hike. There will be two hike options: a 1.5-mile or 3-mile hike.
This investment includes:
Meals Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning.
Three guided hikes led by Margie Harrell, Sarah Howard and Kristy Matheson.
Inspirational and educational sessions led by Kristina Malin, Certified Holistic Health Coach, Lisa Helm, LISW, Melissa Faulkner, PhD., Christina Phillips, MSW, and Kristy Matheson, LSW and RYT.
Heated bunk cabins with bathroom and shower facilities in each place.
Candlelight Restorative Yoga on Saturday evening
The opportunity to participate in a book swap.
Optional chair massages by Melissa Smith, Licensed Massage Therapist
Door prizes
Campfires and smores’ all weekend!
Coffee and Hot Chocolate all weekend!
The chance to meet other women who will encourage and accept you just as you are.
The feeling of being inspired, motivated and encouraged to make 2024 a wonderful year!
The opportunity to continue your weekend experience with monthly group accountability and encouragement sessions. (More details given at the retreat)
Investment and Registration Link:
https://form.jotform.com/232275596373162
Retreat with lodging (recommended)- $200.00
Retreat without lodging- $160.00
Optional 15-minute chair massage-$25.00
*Everyone’s schedules differ, but we can only accommodate the above options.
Cancellation Policy:
All sales are final, and there are only refunds if you can find someone to take your ticket. If, for an unforeseen reason, we must cancel the retreat, we will issue a full refund minus the credit card fees.
*We’re likely to encounter various winter weather, which adds the element of adventure. If needed, we adjust activities or hike lengths, but we will only cancel if weather conditions are deemed dangerous such as a level three snow emergency.
If you are new to winter adventures, moderately experienced, or an established snow bunny, we have something for everyone, and we sincerely hope that you will be a “winter chick” with us for the weekend!
