New Centerville Brunch Pub Menu Revealed

January 15, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Lorenzo Bas will open the doors to The Brunch Pub in uptown Centerville later this month, he’s just awaiting one more inspection before he announces the date. The building, which was built in the 1800’s served as the original Centerville High School has been under transformation for a couple of years.  Bas, a 2016 graduate of Centerville High explained that because the building is listed on the historical register, it was a more difficult renovation than he expected, having to redo the electric and plumbing, it’s taken two years to get it done.  After a tour last week I can tell you he’s done a terrific job on this building, that was most recently Las Piramides Mexican Restaurant.

Bas’s inspiration for the restaurant comes from the fact that he’s always hungry and he couldn’t find a brunch spot that offered what he wanted.  So having grown up in the restaurant business, he got his first job at a local pizza parlor folding pizza boxes as a young teen, spent an enormous amount of time watching cooking videos and eventually got to work on the line at that pizza joint.  His parents owned an eatery in Liberty Township, (they’ve since retired) it only natural for him to open his own place. He’s proud of the fact that all the breads, danishes, cookies, waffles and gelato’s will be made in house.

In chatting with Bas, his love of food and cooking comes through.  He’ll be the Chef with a kitchen crew of 10 to execute his farm to table comfort food as he describes his menu.   Bas has been inspired by his international travels, to recreate dishes he’s fallen in love with and is working with Liberty Farm Market to procure a lot of his herbs and vegetables. His plan is to offer a new menu twice a year.    Here’s a peek at the opening dinner menu:

The bar which has a dozen stools along the bar and some high top tables will feature classic cocktails, craft beers and soda’s by the can, because he thinks the canned beverages have the best taste. The wine list will hightlight  bottles from Argentina and Chile, Bas says “people think wines from France and Italy are the best,  but I want to focus wines I’ve tasted in South America, which are more affordable and just at tasty.”

The fireplace room offers a place to enjoy a magazine and a drink, according to Bas.  It’s corner banquette will be a great place for smaller groups and the other half of the room offers a semi-private area for larger groups.

5 Design Secrets at the Dayton Airport

January 12, 2024 By Guest Contributor

With all of the shiny, new things to explore thanks to the terminal modernization at the Dayton International Airport, you could accidentally miss some pretty interesting details. Here are some of the hidden, subtle, and surprising design elements you don’t want to miss next time you visit the airport.

1. Connect with the Sunshine

If you frequented the airport in the past, you likely don’t recall seeing windows near baggage claim. That’s because as the airport grew and needed space for rental car counters, a break room for airport staff, and the Military Welcome Center, the logical response was to place them where they would fit and be easy to locate for passengers. However, it meant blocking the light from the outside.

With the rental car counters moving to their own, dedicated building, and the Military Welcome Center moving to a larger space, the windows are once again visible, providing a sense of openness and connectivity with the outside world.

2. Look Down at Airplanes for a Change

You’ve probably noticed the brand-new terrazzo floors that glitter in the light and look brilliantly shiny and new, but did you notice the airplane designs across the expanse of the terminal floor? Not only are 20 airplanes designed into the floor that are significant to Dayton’s aviation history, but these airplanes are also life sized. Want to see how you stack up next to a B-17 Flying Fortress? Step on up and see for yourself! (Spoilers: It’s bigger than you.)

3. Check Outside for Hidden Design Elements

On the exterior of the terminal, the canopy is ready for lift off thanks to the sleek, slender wing-shaped materials that taper just like the wing of an airplane. This nod to aviation design is a beautiful way to celebrate flight (and the city where it was invented).

4. Look Up at the Structure

The columns are actually built at a slight angle, just enough to emulate the wheels of the airplane and the experience of standing under an airplane.

New and improved Dayton Airport terminal

5. Sustain and Maintain

There are so many ways we are working to make the airport more sustainable and easier to maintain for airport staff. Here are a few:

  • The glass at the front is connected to sensors that turn off the lights if there’s enough natural light coming in.
  • Columns, walls, counters, and more are wrapped in stainless steel, which when dirtied throughout the day can simply be washed off. With typical drywall, the airport would need repainted every six months or so. Bonus detail: The use of stainless steel is also meant to represent the metal bodies of airplanes.
  • The terrazzo floor will last a long time and require only maintenance and cleaning for 50 years. Terrazzo should hold up for around 50 years, or around five or six carpet replacements.
  • The mechanical system (HVAC) can adjust and slow down when areas are empty.

The 3,500 people who go through the Dayton Airport daily will likely enjoy the more obvious improvements, luster, and renewed energy of the terminal thanks to the many improvements that have been made so far. Only a few will catch all of the surprising little details that have been incorporated into the design to create one fascinating celebration of flight – in the city where powered flight was made possible.

Shop THE MARKET at Town & Country To Benefit KNO

January 12, 2024 By Dayton937

The Kettering Noon Optimists have been hosting THE MARKET at Town & Country on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 11am-4pm since 2017.

When the mall did their remodel they committed to use the breezeway space to support community and civic activities.  Pam Cochran was the Property Manager at the time and was also a Kettering Noon Optimist member.  Unfortunately Pam is no longer with us but her spirit to support the community and children of the area is still alive.

The Market features local small businesses such as Susan with Got Cakes, Christine with Red Lotus Essence and Kelly with Au Faux Me.  There are also crafters such as Anthea with Chalk Couture decor and Sharell with Purple Mane.  Direct sales vendors include Jennifer with Paper Pie, Carol with Tastefully Simple, Chery with Color Street Nails, Carrie with Thirty One, Janell with Origami Owl, Tammy with Mary Kay, Robyn with Norwex and Laura with Mary and Martha.

Every month We Care Arts is a vendor at no cost to them.  Some months we have additional charities such as the Kettering Backpack Program, Goodworks Farm and Diaper Depot.  According to Barbara Farris, the Immediate Past President of the club, “The Market is one of biggest fundraisers for the Optimist Club and we are grateful that Town & Country does not charge us to use their location.  This allows us to keep vendor fees on the same level that churches and schools use.”

Farris shared that some of the activities of KNO uses the funds raised through The Market are  scholarships, an essay and Oratorical  contest, providing shoes for all Kindergarten students at Beavertown Elementary, sweat pants/shirts, socks and underwear to all the nurses in Kettering Elementary schools, supporting Crayons to Classroom and Kettering Back Pack.

Burning Down The (Fire)House

January 11, 2024 By Dayton937

Dave Chappelle brings laughter, community at new comedy venue

It was a bad night to be Brian Housh, but a good night to be Dave Chappelle.

Yellow Springs’ most famous – or depending on your take on some of his feelings about certain communities and politicians, infamous – resident performed two sold out shows this week at the YS Firehouse. The YS Firehouse is the former Miami Twp. Fire Station on Corry Street, a mere few blocks away from his Chappelle Shop where dedicated fans can (and have) buy the comic’s merchandise in droves.

In much the same manner of his shows during the pandemic, entry into the YS Firehouse came with several rules that can make you feel like you’re entering a secret comedic society. Patrons paying the $90 ticket entry (before fees) were advised to leave all phones, smart devices, purses and anything else that could house a recording device in the car. Yondr bags and a coat check ensured none of the evening’s affair would be transmitted without Chappelle’s OK, the release form notifying all those entering the show would be recorded, however, by Chappelle’s team. Where that footage ends up remains to be seen; what was clear, however, was everyone in attendance was there to see what would transpire.

Chicken wings and french fry baskets were available just outside the venue courtesy of Let’s Eat Food Truck, which, based on constant presence of both inside the showroom, apparently lives up to its motto that it’s “food be slappin’.” It was clear aesthetics were carefully considered in the construction of what looked to be the 200-250 seat venue. As opposed to traditional tables, the inside of the YS Firehouse featured rows of chairs arranged in an elongated “C” shape around the stage, perhaps in honor of the venue’s owner. The natural brick gave the building a fancy lodge feel, the lighting and wood floor working in concert to create exactly what Chappelle wanted: A vibe where all those in attendance felt like they were part of the coolest party in town.

With DJ Fatty Lumpkin spinning classic golden era hip-hop pre-show – it’s hard to imagine another Ohio venue where Grand Puba and Camp Lo receive extended playtime in 2024 – the building was abuzz upon entry. As the clock rolled past 8 p.m., stagehands began taping down cords and cables; a woman brought two stools on stage, one featuring the comedian’s signature pack of cigarettes and an ashtray he would remember he could use later in the show.

Despite all pre-show’s hush-hush nature, Wednesday night’s show didn’t feel anything like a secret society akin to Katt Williams recently alluded to on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast. Chappelle would, however, mention the Ohio native/cornfield show alumni several times throughout the night.

Taking the stage just before or right at 8:30 p.m., Chappelle swiftly maneuvered through a litany of topics hosting the show, doing time before introducing the night’s three other performers. In addition to Williams, topics included Chappelle’s purchase of Yellow Springs property, Donald Trump … And the debut of a Chewbacca-like voice for a specific segment of a community that has voiced displeasure with him. The events leading up to/following the aforementioned Yellow Springs council member’s removal as Village President would bear the brunt of the comic’s vitriol Wednesday night, Chappelle at one point (genuinely?) apologizing for the repeated blows.

It was one of a few moments of the night that makes the comedian so conflicting for some: While the laughs came fast and furiously from the audience, determining the line between what is simply joke fodder and his true feelings about Housh might still be blurred for Chappelle himself. Would anything Chappelle said Wednesday change his critics’ thoughts about him? Probably not. Was it clear to anyone in attendance that he can be a comedic powerhouse in his element? Most definitely.

While some in attendance were clearly hoping for quote-unquote “big” name comics to round out the evening’s bill, those concerns were alleviated as the night played out. DJ Cipha Sounds – who is quick to let you know he’s “very famous in New York” – has clearly dedicated himself to stand-up comedy as much as he did hip-hop during his days on WQHT-FM “Hot 97.” At times, Sounds’ set almost felt like watching a developing version of a young Chappelle himself, especially when re-assuring all the straight white males in attendance he knows they’ve had it rough.

Connecticut native and BET/TV One alumni Marshall Brandon would take the stage next, weaving intricate wordplay with stories about sex, parenting, family and relationships. While Sounds brought a high energy model to the stage, Brandon was much more of a relaxed orator, delivering jokes in a way that felt like Bob Newhart-meets-Franklin Ajaye-with-just-a-touch-of-middle-finger attitude underneath.

Closing out Wednesday’s show was musical guest Issa Ali, engaging the crowd in traditional block party fashion with two songs, “Levels to This” and “Clap to This.”

The building with the big “C” on its side in the heart of downtown Yellow Springs has now opened for business. Wednesday night’s sold out affair would seem to make a strong case it may be for quite some time.

McCoy on Movies: Mean Girls

January 10, 2024 By Tabari McCoy

“Lindsey Lohan? Never heard of her …” Regina George (Reneé Rapp, center) holds court in the lunchroom with Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood) and Karen Shetty (Avantika) in a scene from Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez, Jr.’s production of MEAN GIRLS. Credit: Jojo Whilden © 2023 Paramount Pictures. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Angourie Rice, Jenna Fischer, Reneé Rapp, Auli’I Cravalho, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Jaquel Spivey, Christopher Briney with Busy Phillips, Tim Meadows and Tina Fey

DIRECTOR:
Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
THE BACK STORY: Based on the hit musical – which itself is based on the original hit 2004 theatrical film – Mean Girls stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, a young girl who has been homeschooled by her mother (Jenna Fischer) while living in Kenya. Ms. Heron, however, has taken a job back in the United States, meaning Cady is about to get her first taste of what life is like in an American high school.

And that’s where she encounters a cast of characters that are going to change her life.

After meeting her new homeroom teacher Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey), Cady is observed by Janis (Auli’I Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), two social outcasts who quickly see she needs a rundown of the law of the land. That means letting her know about the Plastics, a.k.a. queen of the school Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her two faithful underlings, the clueless Karen Shetty (Avantika) and the smart-yet-still-fearful-of-her Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood). None of this would be a problem for Cady if Regina hadn’t also taken an interest in her … And Cady took an interest in Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), a.k.a. her ex.

So … What happens when you mix teenagers, insecurity, hormones and life lessons all to the beat of a diverse musical soundtrack? A film that is sure to turn plenty of potentially mean older fans into pleasantly surprised moviegoers …

THE REVIEW: The musical version of a beloved stage production … Sometimes, it can turn out great (like Les Misérables) …Other times, you get Cats. But creating a movie musical based on a stage musical that was originally a film that came out just 20 years – YUP, 2004 was two decades ago now – ago? Now that could be a daunting task for any directing duo … But for one that is primarily known for shorts and music videos like Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.? It has “make or break” written all over it.

Fortunately for Jayne and Perez, Jr. – and fans of the original film – Mean Girls 2024 makes for an entertaining film fans old and new will enjoy.

Here’s what works well about the musical film adaptation of Mean Girls: The story is told efficiently through a clever mix of traditional dialogue and song, the latter diving deeper into their respective characters’ psyches, motivations, fears and insecurities in a way the original did not. In addition, the dance sequences enhance each moment or scene in similar fashion, serving as a complement rather than a distraction.

None of this would matter, however, without the performances of the relatively unknown cast. Whereas Rice channels Cady with the same innocence Lindsey Lohan did in the original, Rapp owns pretty much every scene she’s in – while yet being more relatable arguably than Rachel McAdams was in the role in 2004. Wood likewise gives Gretchen considerable spunk and Avantika plays her role with such a wide-eyed aloofness it honors the work her predecessor Amanda Seyfried did and then some.

Cravalho and newcomer Spivey, however, may have the best star turns of the entire affair, each bringing a dynamic (and needed) entertainment aspect to the film. Fey, Tim Meadows (reprising his role as the beleaguered Mr. Duvall) and the other adults are wise to mostly stay out of the way, letting the young people – even though it’s hard to buy in to most of the cast outside of Rice, Cravalho and Avantika being in their teens –  shine. Of course, Jayne and Perez, Jr. deserve kudos for their interpolation of TikTok and the modern world into the mix to deliver the best package possible – then again, having Fey on board for this go round likely helps.

Whether you prefer the 2024 version of Mean Girls likely comes down to how much you love the original versus you love musicals. The new one has all the exploration of the insanity that is high school, the humor and utlimately the empowerment that made the original so beloved by so many, plus a few new wrinkles thrown in for good measure. Thus, both are fine, both are entertaining …

And don’t worry, both are worthy of fetch-ing your attention.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Meet Our New TikTok Dining Correspondent

January 8, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Ben Smith has  spent most of life in the north Dayton area (Troy). He owns a small business and travels to car dealerships around a 16 county territory. He’s been doing this for 7 years and has always been drawn to the “honey holes” restaurants. So for his lunch he’ll stop and check them out these eateries. His father is a HUGE yelper with over a million views and 1000 reviews. He decided to piggy back off what he does is to do videos, so I started using tik tok.”

He calls his tik tok videos “straight bussin” which he says comes from my teenage children. They, and all the gen z kids, have new slang words that I’ve picked up and started using to make them cringe. (Bussin’ means really good, great)

We asked him about his favorite foods and he says, “I LOVE Clam chowder, Rueben’s, and Indian food. I‘ll try anything and I firmly believe that if it’s edible and prepared right, anything can be delicious!”

We asked him if he had to pick his final meal and here’s what he shared:

pepercorn crusted sea bass (Salar)
Pimento bacon biscuit (Salt Block Company)
Stewed tomatoes (Pine Club)
2 slices of artichoke Oakey Dokey pizza w/ extra cashew ricotta (Wheat Penny)
English tea cake for desert (Cold Water Cafe)

So now we’ve decided to share his video’s on local restaurants. Since he’s from Troy, it seems only right that we share this one on the eve of the opening of the 4th Old Scratch Pizza, which has remodeled the old fire house into a great eatery.

Girl Scout Cookie Season is Here- Don’t Buy Cookies From Parents!

January 8, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Each girl scout cookie season I share this story:

I admit I was a girl scout. And for those of you who know me, it will come as no surprise that I was determined to sell more cookies than any of the other girls. I went up and down my street, knocking on doors for orders. I called all my relatives and perfected my telemarketing skills. I asked my dad to get his co-workers to buy from me. And he said NO! But he did offer to take me to work so I could ask for the order. I worked hard and sold hundreds of boxes and was sure I’d win the Cookie title.

Well as it turns out, I didn’t. Some little girl named Susie did. She lived down the street from me and I never saw her ask any of our neighbors to buy cookies. I asked her how she did it and she said it was easy-her mom and dad got all the orders for her. I was mad and didn’t think it was fair and complained to my dad about it. He told me life wasn’t fair, never would be, but that I’d really won, and I’d appreciate it some day when I realized that I had gotten much more out of it than Susie had. Not what a 9 year old girl wants to hear. So I’m sure I sulked around for a while, until something else captured my attention.

But now many years later, I get it. My dad was right- I had won! I’d learned how to set a goal, prospect customers, perfect my sales pitch, work on my organizational skills, plan the logistics of delivery, handle money, make change and enjoy quite a few cookies, too!

And that’s why I implore you to only buy cookies from Girl Scouts. I know there are many well intentioned parents that want to help their daughters, and help support the troops so they can put on all the programs they have scheduled; but please help them by letting them sell! And I still pledge to buy cookies from any girl scout who asks.

When you buy Girl Scout Cookies from the girls  you help young entrepreneurs develop five essential life skills.

Skill #1: Goal Setting
Girl Scouts learn how to set goals and create a plan to reach them, enabling amazing experiences for themselves and their troops all year long, while helping others too.

Skill #2: Decision Making
Girl Scouts learn to make decisions on their own and as a team, whether it’s how to run and promote their cookie sale, interact with customers, or spend their earnings.

Skill #3: Money Management
Girl Scouts learn to expand their money smarts while running their own cookie business and create a budget to fund the experiences they want to share as a troop.

Skill #4: People Skills
Girl Scouts find their voice and build confidence through customer interactions, developing valuable skills that will help them succeed in school, in business, and in life.

Skill #5: Business Ethics
Girl Scouts learn to act ethically—lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime of leadership and success.

And now about the cookies:

Gluten free? Try Caramel Chocolate Chips

Vegan? Try Thin Mints

Kosher? Halal? Try them all! Every flavor variety is kosher and Halal certified.

If you don’t know a Girl Scout already, mark your calendar for February 16, when customers who do not already know a Girl Scout can go to gswo.org/findcookies to purchase cookies to be shipped directly to their homes. This link also can be used to find a local booth or purchase cookies for donation to military and veterans’ organizations and local foodbanks.

All Girl Scout Cookie proceeds stay local.

Do you know what’s even sweeter than Girl Scout Cookies? Every box of cookies you buy from your neighborhood Girl Scout stays local. Proceeds from your purchase help fund incredible adventures like camping and bold ideas like a local recycling program. The Dayton region has over 5000 girl scout that will benefit from your support when you purchase cookies from a local Girl Scout today!
