FILMDAYTON TAKES ON THE ROLE OF FILM COMMISSION

April 21, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

fd commissionAs many of you know, this past July I took on the role of Executive Director for FilmDayton.  What you may not know is that also meant taking classes to learn how to run a film commission.  I got my certification and today FilmDayton announced we are officially becoming The Greater Dayton Region Film Commission.  We’ve been doing that work unofficially for years, and now we are a certified Film Commission, through the Association of Film Commissioners International.   We celebrate tonight with a special screening of Miles Ahead, the Don Cheadle film about legendary musician Miles Davis.  As this invite only screening at The Neon, we’ll have an audience of crew that worked on the motion picture, with FilmDayton supporters.   We’ve chosen the debut of this film, which had scenes shot at the Dayton Jail and ReFraze Studio in Kettering, to announce our new focus.  We are confident

FilmDayton will continue to showcase our region’s talent and resources to local and out-of-state companies seeking assistance with film and television production.  We’ll continue offering location assistance and coordination with crew and services. The Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit has generated more than $400 million in economic impact to the state since its inception.  For every $1 invested, there has been a return of $2.01*. But most of that business has gone to Cleveland and Cincinnati. Without a film commission, Dayton hasn’t even been at the table to try to recruit productions to the region.

Now FilmDayton will promote and market the nine county region, in order to recruit and facilitate the production of film, television, commercials, corporate videos, music videos, and documentaries, as well as emerging forms of media. Film Commissioner Lisa Grigsby explains, “ in simple terms, the film commission acts as a concierge service for productions interested in using the Greater Dayton region as a backdrop.” It’s been a long time coming, but as FilmDayton Board President Shaunn Baker shares, “the commission has been a goal since the organization started in 2008, and I’m glad we’ve finally made it happen.”

The state tax credit that is doing so much to bring films to Ohio has used up this year’s rebate money, but look for a flurry of activity this summer, as the states new fiscal year replenishes the $20 million dollar fund for filmmakers.

Tom Hanks Fever + Cincinnati & Dayton’s MILES AHEAD at THE NEON!

April 21, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

26004198166_ffa375b1b8_oHello Everyone,

We’re cleaning house this week!  On Friday, we will start two brand new films. First is Don Cheadle’s MILES AHEAD. This film was shot in Cincinnati and Dayton, and many filmmakers and actors from the region participated in the production (I even had the privilege of being an extra for a day back in 2014). In addition, we’ll open A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING – starring Tom Hanks. Dayton is currently quite excited about Hanks and his attachment to Wright State University. Interestingly, Stuart McDowell of WSU visited Hanks on the set of HOLOGRAM FOR A KING in Berlin. It was during this meeting that Hanks agreed to put his name on the new “Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures” at WSU. (Would you like to win an autographed poster? Keep reading.)

Synopsis for MILES AHEAD: “In the midst of a dazzling and prolific career at the forefront of modern jazz innovation, Miles Davis (Don Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of five years in the late 1970s. Alone and holed up in his home, he is beset by chronic pain from a deteriorating hip, his musical voice stifled and numbed by drugs and pain medications, his mind haunted by unsettling ghosts from the past.” (taken from Sony Classics) Shot in Cincinnati & Dayton, this improvisation on the life of Miles Davis is a treat for music lovers! Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

Synopsis for A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING: This film is based on the beloved novel by Dave Eggers and directed by visionary director Tom Tykwer. “Cultures collide when an American businessman (Tom Hanks) is sent to Saudi Arabia to close what he hopes will be the deal of a lifetime. Baffled by local customs and stymied by an opaque bureaucracy, he eventually finds his footing with the help of a wise-cracking taxi driver (Alexander Black) and a beautiful Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury).” (taken from Roadside Attractions) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website. (More about Hanks, HOLOGRAM and WSU below.)

On Monday, April 25 at 7:30, Gathr Films along with Tricia Rau-Hammond will present a one-time screening of the new documentary MILK. “Through an intimate and artistic lens, MILK brings a universal perspective on the politics, commercialization and controversies surrounding birth and infant feeding over the canvas of stunningly beautiful visuals and poignant voices from around the globe. Inspiring, informative, provocative and sensitive, MILK celebrates bringing a new life into this world with a strong call to action and reflection.” (taken from Press Notes) In addition to the screening, the evening will feature a raffle of prizes from Luna Blue’s Boutique. Advanced tickets must be purchased on the Gathr site by following this LINK. If tickets remain, they will be available at our box office one hour before the screening.

“The seniors from the award winning Motion Picture program at Wright State University are showcasing their thesis work at the annual BIG LENS FILM FESTIVAL. The film festival of new work is scheduled for May 1st, 2016 at 7:30. There will be work from Joe Cook, Alan Lewin, Mitch Centers, Sydney Waltz, Brian Roll, C. B. Hovey, Jessica Barton, Michaela Scholl, Eric Risher, and Liz Lowe. Past participants in Big Lens have won awards at festivals such as Slamdance, Student Academy Awards, and Sundance.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $7 and can now be purchased at THE NEON’s box office.

Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 has been reserved for a showcase of student work from Stivers School for the Arts. I’ll have more details for you soon!

“The Dayton International Peace Museum invites you to save Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. for HIP-HOPERATION. In conjunction with our ‘Invent Peace’ theme, this funny documentary follows the Journey of Seniors from New Zealand as they not only learn to dance Hip Hop, but attend a World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas. Enjoy their delight in discovering a new world. Suggested Donation: $10 (includes popcorn!) More info at: daytonpeacemuseum.org or call Jerry at 937-999-7314.” (If you liked YOUNG AT HEART – the documentary about seniors singing rock songs – you’ll love this film.) Check out the trailer by clicking this LINK.

Would you like to win a poster from HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING signed by Tom Hanks? During our run of the film, you can enter your name for a chance to win one. Stuart McDowell helped to get posters autographed for us during yesterday’s festivities at WSU with Hanks – a truly fantastic event! Here are a couple photos I took from the ceremony.

The annual Spring Dance Concert on April 21-24 will feature the Wright State Dance Ensemble and works by guest choreographers Jon Lehrer and Greg Robinson. (Photos by Scott Robins/Geek with a Lens)

The Wright State Dance Ensemble will premiere six works and feature dances by nationally known guest choreographers Jon Lehrer, of Lehrer Dance, and Greg Robinson during its annual Spring Dance Concert.

Performances take place in the Festival Playhouse in the Creative Arts Center on Thursday, April 21, at 7 pm; Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23, at 8pm; and Sunday, April 24, at 2 pm.

The concert will feature eight varied pieces reflecting the breadth and vision of the Dance Program, as well as guest works by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company II and Dayton Ballet II.

“The concert is sure to have something for everyone. From the music of The Pointer Sisters to the guitar riffs of Richie Havens we paint a canvas in concert dance with athletic, vibrant works of variety,” said Teressa Wylie McWilliams, dance program coordinator and professor.

“The WSU University Dance Ensemble is exquisite. They produce some of the most electric dancers around,” said Greg Graham, Broadway veteran who was guest choreographer at Wright State last year and in 2008.

Jon Lehrer’s “Pantheon Rising,” originally choreographed for Lehrer Dance in 2013, is about the gods and goddesses that created the universe and features a bold musical score by Damien Simon.

Greg Robinson’s “Girls, Girls, Girls!!!” is an appreciation and evocation of “all things showgirl” and features music by Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, the Young Sinatras and The Pointer Sisters.to-see-more-and-order-prints-go-to-httpbit-ly1bbumzn-2

Premiering at the concert will be “Revel in the Now,” choreographed by Gina Walther, associate professor of dance, exuberant work for 11 dancers that pays homage to the philosophy of living in the moment; and “A Gathering of Crows” by Justin Gibbs, assistant professor.

The Dance Ensemble will also perform McWilliams’ “The Cost,” featuring music by Richie Havens and Jimi Hendrix, and a senior student work by Elizabeth Ramsey.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students and can be ordered onlineor by calling the Theatre Box Office at 937-775-2500.

Family Conversations About Meals

April 20, 2016 By Jason Harrison

What are you having for dinner tonight?

You should know the answer to that question, even if your spouse is the one responsible for preparing dinner on this particular evening.

Lately I’ve been coaching a number of people who can’t answer that question, usually because they’ve outsourced all responsibility to their significant other. The problem with this scenario–even if, at best, it represents a mutually agreeable division of labor–is that it removes responsibility, buy-in, and empowerment from one half of the household equation.

photo-1445633629932-0029acc44e88

Most of the time–though not quite all–it’s us dudes who aren’t quite dialed into what’s at the table. I’m sure someone smarter than me could give you an entire socio-historical breakdown about why this continues to be the case in 2016, but for now let’s just agree that husbands and boyfriends ought to be a part of the discussion.

Food is such a source of guilt (I shouldn’t have eaten that), turmoil (read: picky child eaters), and judgment (I can’t believe you’re eating that) that I can understand why we avoid talking about it. By outsourcing the cooking duties to someone else, I think there’s a part of us thinking that we’re absolving ourselves of responsibility.

“I’d like to eat a little better, but my wife does all the cooking.”

“I’d like to eat a little better, but my husband usually does the grocery shopping.”

If you’re married with children, my guess is you spend some amount of time discussing college funds, vacations,  and visits from the in-laws. You have those discussions because navigating each of these things requires some degree of planning. I’m here to argue that food for your family is more important than all of those things combined–and requires no less planning than figuring out how to save for college.

photo-1448997999437-3cb667cf2085

Too many people talk about food in terms of willpower and discipline, but in my experience the real issue around eating well is planning.

Who does the grocery shopping and when?

What’s going on this week?

Kids have a softball game on Wednesday? Cool–what’s for dinner?

Compulsory after work drinks with the new boss? Cool–what’s the plan for eating well so you don’t end up eating all of the mozzarella sticks?

Traveling for work? Have you checked Google maps to see where your hotel is and what decent food options are around?

We think we get stuck, don’t we? “Well, I only ate McDonald’s because we had the thing and then I got off of work late and then–”

No.

You ate McDonald’s because you didn’t have a plan, you didn’t have fresh food in the house, and you didn’t coordinate with your partner. It’s not because you’re dumb or because you lack discipline. It’s url-5because you’re a human being with responsibilities and the only way to eat well under such circumstances is to plan for it with the seriousness you apply to other important things in your life.

I’m in no position to be giving you homework, but I’m going to do it anyway. If you’ve never talked to your spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend about food, do it today. See where the conversation leads. You might be pleasantly surprised about what you’ll learn from each other.

Changes Coming at Rue Dumaine

April 19, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

url-3On November 27, 2007, Kearney and Sand opened Rue Dumaine in Centerville, Ohio.”Rue Dumaine” was the street on which Peristyle, Chef Anne’s first New Olreans restaurant was located . Rue Dumaine has gone on to win both awards and recognition for their food, wine list and service. Kearney has been recognized nine times by the James Beard Foundation, as one of the top chefs in the country.

This morning Chef Anne sent this eblast out to her loyal customers:

“It takes a village”…while this African proverb references the raising of children, I am writing this with a deep sense of gratitude toward my village – the Rue Dumaine krewe, farmers, artisans, purveyors, and guests who have helped me build something special in the Dayton dining community over the last 8 years. When Rue Dumaine opened back in November 2007, I was happy to be back in my hometown, ready to share my love of good food with any & all. As I look back on this journey I am very proud of the mark Rue Dumaine has made in this community, but I also know that nothing remains the same; things must evolve or die away.  Although change can be unsettling, it can also be exciting and open the door to greater opportunities. With that in mind, I have made the choice to let go of things I can’t change and focus on the things I can. For Rue Dumaine this means restructuring our food service program.

Between now Tuesday,  April 19th and Saturday, May 7, 2016 Rue Dumaine will continue to operate during its normal business hours: Tuesday – Thursday, 5-9pm; Friday lunch 11:30am-1:30pm; and Friday – Saturday 5-10pm. The last evening of our regular restaurant service will be Saturday, May 7.

Beginning May 8, 2016, the restaurant’s operations will transition to private events, plus monthly special dinners and events that are open to the public. These special dinners will include a monthly wine dinner, local farmer’s HARVEST dinner, four monthly POP-UP dinners (different every evening, prix fixe menus, wine optional), plus assorted cocktail and cooking classes (dates yet to be determined). During the growing season we are hosting monthly in-house RUE Dumaine Farmer’s Market showcasing our regions bounty turned into ready to eat foods to be enjoyed at your home. At any time of operation Rue Dumaine gift cards will be honored.

In re-structuring our food service program we will provide the Dayton area with dining opportunities featuring our classic style of food and beverage service personalized for your private event needs. This approach allows us to accommodate the ever-growing demand for private events while continuing to serve our loyal customers.

We will focus our attention on each event personally resulting in success for all parties involved. Who doesn’t want to eat a good meal at their next Board meeting or Pharmaceutical dinner? Whether it is a monthly business meeting with the management team (enjoy a nice meal then get down to business), your poppa’s 70th birthday celebration, graduation party, last minute rehearsal dinner, dinner club get-together, or even your daughters intimate wedding celebration; the RUE may well be the right fit.

I will remain invested in Rue Dumaine as we move forward building upon the reputation we have made for ourselves in this community. We look forward to continuing to serve you and yours during this transition.

Thank you.”

I recently visited the ThinkTV offices and studio on April 8, 2016 for a short tour/photoshoot with Isaiah Ashba, Manager of Events & Projects for ThinkTV. “Celebrating our 40th Anniversary is really a tribute to our community- the support we receive each year, hundreds of donors and volunteers are truly the ones that make the GreatTV Auction such a special event for us. 450-500 volunteers dedicate around 3,800 hours,” said Ashba. In addition, hundreds of local businesses and national companies have donated thousands of items in support of the auction.

April 18, 2016 By Tom Gilliam

Welcome to Week 12 of Mystery Mondays.  The answer to Week 11’s Mystery Photo is: Replica of the Wright Brothers’ 1905 hangar at Huffman Prairie Flying Field on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. I took this photo on August 7, 2015.

DMM Mystery Monday-11

We congratulate our randomly drawn winner Katie Fleitz of  Dayton! Rapid Fired Pizza certificates are coming your way!

Here’s some information about the Huffman Prairie Flying Field via the National Park Service’s website.

When the Wright brothers returned to Dayton, after their historic first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, they looked for a suitable flying field closer to home. Dayton banker, Torrence Huffman allowed the brothers to use his pasture, which was located eight miles northeast of Dayton, rent-free. Here in 1904 and 1905, through a series of unique experiments, the Wright brothers mastered the principles of controlled, powered flight and developed the world’s first practical airplane.

In 1904, the brothers made 105 flights, totaling 49 minutes in the air with their 1904 Wright Flyer II. With this flying machine, they made the first turn and the first circle in the air. They also employed a starting derrick for the first time and Wilbur set a new distance record.

Wright Flyer II

When the brothers returned to the Huffman Prairie for the 1905 flying season, they brought along an improved machine, the 1905 Wright Flyer III. This flying machine, which evolved throughout 1905, could bank, turn circles, and make figure-eights. On October 5, 1905, Wilbur piloted the plane for a world record of over 24 miles in 39 minutes. About two weeks later, the brothers ended their experiments for 1905 feeling that they now had a practical airplane that they could market. In the 1905 flying season, the brothers stayed aloft for 262 minutes in just 50 flights.

The Wright brothers returned to Huffman Prairie Flying Field in 1910. The field was used by their new business, The Wright Company, as a testing ground, flying school, and home to their exhibition team. The Wright Company ceased use of the flying field in 1916.

Today, Huffman Prairie Flying Field is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990.

The 1905 Wright Flyer III can be viewed inside the Wright Brothers Aviation Center at Carillon Historical Park and is the only fixed wing aircraft to be designated a National Historic Landmark.

We challenge you to tell us where in the Dayton area this photo was taken by filling out the form below.  We’ll do a random drawing from all those with a correct answer and the winner will get 2 pizzas from Rapid Fired Pizza.

Enter here:

http://goo.gl/forms/dyU55fzc48

We’ll post the winner next Monday with details about the photo as well as a new photo to challenge your knowledge of the Dayton area.

Thanks for playing and good luck!

Submarine House Crowns Champ, Announces Expansion

April 17, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Andrew Oakes, 2016 Super Duper Cheesesteak Champ

A big crowd watched the Super Duper Cheesesteak finals Saturday afternoon at The Beavercreek Submarine House.   Of course your source for Dayton food scoop, Food Adventures was on hand.  After an hour of build up, they brought out the cheesesteaks like the Star Wars “Imperial March.”

The crowd grew silent, the judges looked at the stopwatch.. and GO.. the contest was on.  Nine Champions from each individual Submarine House store around Dayton, were now facing each other in an “eat-off” that has become an annual tradition.

The Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge is where you must eat a 16 inch long Super Duper Cheesesteak in under 16 minutes.

“Super Duper” in Submarine House language means a 16 inch cheesesteak with triple the meat, triple the cheese, and the “works” toppings.  The works is onions, mushrooms & peppers cooked with the steak, mushrooms, and topped with cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato and hot pepper relish.

NO SUBSTITUTIONS, NO CHANGES, you must eat the sandwich “as is.”  This challenge is a true Food Adventure!  Not for the squeamish, this contest is fast paced.  Don’t blink, or you could miss the finish !

As the nine contestants took their first bites, 3 leaders emerged, 2015 champ Aaron Smith, 2013 champ Andrew Oakes and 2014 champ Clayton Naylor. They chomped, they chewed, and almost spewed, but instead washed it down intermittently with water.

Now the scoop on what happened next…..

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Submarine House’s 16 Inch Super Duper Cheesesteak

— The Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge benefits Dayton’s Children’s Hospital.  The Submarine House owners, Jason and Brody Danner, started the event by presenting a check in excess of $15,000 to the hospital’s charity fund.  What an incredible donation.

— Andray Simmons, a young man who is the goodwill ambassador from Dayton Children’s Hospital was introduced to the crowd.  Andray is battling sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder.  He thanked the crowd for the charity support, and the whole place erupted in applause.  A touching moment for the crowd and Andray, who was there with his family.

— More money was given away as they drew a $500, $1,000 and $10,000 cash prize for 3 different, lucky Submarine House customers!  It was insane!

Chef House Judging the contest with the Paparazzi everywhere

— Then came the eating contest… Judging the contest were Chef House and the Big Ragu from Food Adventures, Lisa Grigsby from Dayton Dining, Brian Jarvis from Beavercreek City Council, WHIO’s Larry Hansgen, K99’s Frye Guy, and finally Sallie Taylor, Zac Pitts, and Katie Kenney from Living Dayton TV show.

— The winner was …. ANDREW OAKES, from the Centerville store, with a time of 1 minute, 36seconds.  Andrew becomes the first ever “two time” champ.  A close second was Clayton Naylor and close third was Aaron Smith.  Both men were literally a few seconds away from winning.  Trophies were passed out, photos were taken, and interviews made.

— SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:  Jason and Brody Danner shared the information with us, and Larry Hansgen announced to the crowd… Submarine House will be EXPANDING.  The Centerville Submarine House is moving to a larger location on 725 where the old Blockbuster Video was located.  There will be a Submarine House opening up in Huber Heights in the old Fifth Third branch at 5376 Taylorsville Road.  (((BOOM! A Food Adventure is gonna take place there soon !)))

So that’s it folks, another year of cheesesteaks in the record books.

As the fans and “paparazzi” left the building, we all promised to do it again next year.  In the meantime, order a Super Duper Cheesesteak for yourself.  There is a reason they call it “16 inches of heaven.”

Promise us that you will check out the photos below from the event, and follow Food Adventures on Facebook, by clicking HERE..  Dayton’s #1 food blog for restaurant photos, dinner events, TV spots, festival fun, charity events, cooking classes and Food Adventures like this one… from Beers to Bananas Foster, we eat it all.. no rules.

Dayton’s Sriracha Mamma Takes Top Honors Again

April 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

LeeAnneAt this year’s Cajun Hot Sauce Festival that just wrapped up last week in Louisianna, Lee Anne House and her House Made sauces walked away with the People’s Choice Award this year, after finishing 2nd last year, for her Red Thai Chili Sriracha Sauce.

Her brand new Carrot Mango Habanero took first place in the fruit category!
For the 2nd year in a row her Thai Chili Hot Honey sauce was named the Champion of Champions.10259809_1238108982869191_1897689951727959999_n

Due to a problem sourcing peppers the original sauce has been off the shelves for a while but she was recently able to begin sauce making again and now HouseMade Sriracha is back up and running with their newest flavors  restocking local specialty stores  like Keener Farm Butcher Block, Yankee Street Market, Ollie’s Place, A Taste Of Wine, Arrow Wine, Foremost Seafood LTD, Belmont Party Supply and Spice Paradise Dayton.

Head to The Night Market at the Yellow Cab Tonight, where you can pick up a bottle or two and congrautlate Lee Anne yourself.  There’s a food truck rally there as well from 5-10pm, so you can try out the sriracha or sauces on some great street food.

Check out the Shantz Express!

April 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

12311194_1075551239122902_1148631659989768170_nBill Schancey spent years in the restaurant business in Pittsburg.  He’s been in Dayton for about 14 years and missed the business.  Bill says, ” I love to cook, this is a way to get around the community, and meet people.

I’m learning to use social media- to promote, which is new for me.”  So this year he’s launched a food truck, the Shantz Express.  His menu is still a work in progress, but you can expect mostly American fare.

He’s currently serving wings, burgers, salads, gyros, French fries, and calzones.  He’s still trying to find a pizza he can serve quickly that he feels good about, but it’s not on the truck, yet.

You can try his wings three different ways, with buffalo sauce, garlic butter parmesan or with BBQ sauce and they sell 6 for $5 at lunch or 10 for $9 at dinner.

His burgers run from $5-9 dollars.  You can try the Big Kahuna, the Fat Burger which has bacon and a fried egg or he’s just added one with pineapple.

His signature sandwich is the Juggernaut, with ham, turkey and bacon, swiss and cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato with a little Shantz Sauce and fries right on the sandwich for $8

Where to Find the Shantz Express:

Every Wed lunch – WPAFB, base access required
Most Fridays lunch’s – at the car dealerships on 35
This Friday- Truck Rally at Kmart across from The Greene 5-10pm

10 Places To Cocktail On The Patio

April 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

The skies are sunny and warm weather is here, which can mean only one thing: The season for patio drinking is here!  Since it’s been a while since we’ve been able to sip cocktails on a patio, we’d like to remind you of a few of our favorites:

Wheat PennyWheatPenny Patio
515 Wayne Ave
Newly improved, it’s always a who’s who of Dayton hanging on this rustic veranda enjoying some eggplant fires and  hand crafted cocktail from their well trained bartenders.

Lily’s Bistro
329 E. 5th Street, Oregon District
They actually have three patio’s, but it’s the back patio, often dubbed the hidden garden and makes you totally forget you’re just blocks from downtown.

El Meson
903 E. Dixie Drive, West Carrollton
Expanded just last year, you’ll feel like you’ve taken a vacation when you hang out here, enjoying  an eclectic menu of Latin American tapas and don’t miss their signature sangria!  They even have days when they welcome your pooches on the patio.   Close to the bike path as well.

Fifth Street Brewpub10486218_659201484208116_1809332466393041164_n
1600 E. Fifth Steet in St. Anne’s Hill
Newly expanded, this co-op’s courtyard is packed with picnic tables and often features live music

Carmel’s
1025 Shroyer Road
Ice Cold BOBARITAS  go down awfully easy when you chill on this patio with some tex/mex appetizers.  This neighborhood dive is packed with regulars and has a very casual, welcoming atmosphere.

Heather’s 12243237_10153063950866577_3016712064411001593_n
505 Main Street, Springboro
They renovated an old house in Springboro and turned it in to a great little coffee/lunch place by day and a rocking little hangout at night. The nightlife usually happens on Wed-Fri, with an occasional Sat.

Trolley Stop
430 E. Fifth Street, Oregon District
Great for lunch or a late afternoon meeting, time just disappears when you hang out at this oasis that just blocks out all the noise in the busy city.  On Saturday take advantage of their bloody mary bar and brunch menu.

South Park Tavern
1301 Wayne Ave, South Park
This enclosed patio has a cool, casual feel, and great service, so it’s easy to sip away an afternoon.
Monday’s are especially busy, when you can take advantage of 1/2 price pizza.

Mudlick Tap House

135 E 2nd St, Dayton, OH 45402
This Gastropub recently moved from Germantown to downtown, but they’ve kept their rustic feel, great selection of craft beers and scratch kitchen.  Open seven days a week and serving brunch Sat  and Sun with a great bloody mary bar.

TJ Chumps
12 E. Linden, Miamisburg
When they take off the walls, this patio is a great hangout.  Close to the bike trail it’s a perfect spot to refuel after a great ride.

This is just a small sampling, and focused more on where we enjoy drinks on the patio. If you’ve got a favorite we missed, feel free to add it in the comments below. For many more options check out our outdoor dining guide.

The Mural Machine -Daytonians Creating Large-Scale Art

April 15, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

Starting this spring a new company is coming out of the long-time partnership of local artists ETCH (Chris Weyrich) and Tiffany Allyn Clark. Putting new focus to their work, The Mural Machine channels the pair’s passion for creating large-scale public art while also bringing more attention to the art that already exist around the Dayton area.

“This is something that we’ve both been passionate about for some time,” Weyrich said. “The Mural Machine is a way for us to let people know what’s out there and also what more can be done on the side of a warehouse or at a park or a retaining wall.”
Mural maching facebook background
ETCH and Tiffany Allyn Clark have been working in the arts in Dayton for over 30 combined years. Working with such groups as Stivers School for the Arts, at risk youth organizations, the East End community Center, the city of Dayton and numerous small businesses across the region, they have both practiced and taught their art to groups of all ages and demographics. With a national trend toward mural art as a part of central business district revivement, these two have become the center of a new PBS documentary that is currently being filmed.

“Murals have definitely caught a lot of attention recently, but this is much more than a trend,” Clark said. “The positive effects of large-scale art begins at its creation, with neighbors and communities coming together on a project, and then continue to last well into the paint’s fading decades later.”

For those interested, more information on The Mural Machine can be found on their Facebook page.
