A Dayton Woman, & Her Macarons!

April 5, 2016 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Katia, Owner of Redémarrage Patisserie

This is the story of a meticulous, local foodie, who developed an obsession with the French Macaron, and took matters into her own hands.  Her name is Katia, and she is the owner of a local baking business, called “Redémarrage Patisserie.”   She grew up in Beavercreek and being of Lebanese descent she is familiar with good food and parties.  She also loves to travel.  In other words, she is a Food Adventurer in her own right.

After visiting various pastry shops like Laduree in New York, a fascination with macarons evolved.  After trips to Paris, she found more macarons and fell deeper in love with them.

When Katia returned to Dayton, she tried to introduce her friends to macarons, but the local options were either non-existent or not authentic.  She researched macarons, the baking, and for a couple years tweaked and narrowed down her distinct recipe.  Pretty soon, Katia had her own baking business and named it Redémarrage Patisserie.

They were at the Sweet Treats Festival and invited the Food Adventures Crew to a private tasting… and we are big fans.

Authentic French Macarons

These French Macaron cookies are like nothing we have ever tried before.  So, what goes into making these authentic treats, which are some the best macarons for miles around?

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— What is a French macaron?  It is part cookie, part cake, part pastry. These delicate, artsy morsels are hard to describe.  Authentic macarons are identified through a hallmark along the filling and cookie called “feet.”  Macarons should also have an eggshell like crunch when you bite into them.  It should lightly shatter in your mouth.  Non-crunch, means not authentic macarons.

— The recipes at Redémarrage Patisserie have to be exact.  But that is ok, because Katia admits she has a streak of OCD in her.  It is as much about chemistry as it is about baking.  Her products are gluten free and have only 5 ingredients: Egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar, almond flour, and filling.

— Katia has gone to great lengths to get the humidity levels in her home baking area just right, so the environment works for making macarons.  It is all about climate control, and she has the dehumidifiers to prove it!

A Coffee Flavored Macaron

— The macarons are little pieces of delicate art.  Some have brushed artwork on the cookie cover.  All are meticulously crafted into different flavors.  They are definitely a hand held Food Adventure.  So much work goes into creating them, you almost feel guilty eating them… and then you taste them and your guilt fades away.

— Redémarrage Patisserie typically sells the macarons for $2 each.  They are perfect for weddings, wedding showers, baby showers, birthday parties, and any event you want to class up, or impress your friends and family.   Katia suggests ordering between 1 to 3 flavors, and recommends the macarons be eaten within 24 hours, so they stay true to form.

Delicious Works of Art

— The best way to place your orders is to call (937) 838-2503, you can also contact them through Facebook HERE. The Patisserie is also in discussions with various corporations about possible distribution deals.  You may see them more accessible in the future at a store near you!  The outlook is bright for this passionate, local owner!

We were lucky enough to try a sampling of the various macaron flavors and we have to share our favorites.  So without further delay, Food Adventures presents their “Must Eat” macarons from Redémarrage Patisserie.

Strawberry Macaroons

MUST EATS:

— COFFEE FLAVORED MACARON: So delicate, yet the flavor takes over in a good way.  Creamy and dreamy, this macaron is a Must Eat if there ever was one.

— VANILLA BOURBON MACARON: You can make your own Bourbon Trail without leaving Dayton.  Just place a few of these macarons on a plate, and you will hear the accolades.  Rich, and filled with full deep flavor, this one is a winner.

— STRAWBERRY MACARONS:  Wait for it.. crunch! and yep, the surprise taste of strawberry jam inside.  Light and delicious, this macaron could be a favorite of any person with taste buds.

Inside the Macaron

Food Adventures has done it again.  We have found yet another little known gem in the Gem City.  Family owned, and so well run, we expect to hear big things in the coming months about Redémarrage Patisserie.  Call them now and order these one-of-a-kind, authentic creations for yourselves.

Hollywood Vampires Headed To Fraze

April 4, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

CfM320ZVAAAgYugIn 1972, on the Sunset Strip at a club called the Rainbow Bar & Grill, the Hollywood Vampires were born in the upstairs bar. It was a gathering place for the rock stars living in or passing through L.A. “To join the club, one simply had to out drink all of the members,” says Alice Cooper, a founding member of the Vampires. “I would walk in on a typical night” Alice says, “and John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon — who would usually be in a costume like a maid or a chauffeur — Bernie Taupin, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz would be there. The next week might be Bernie Taupin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz.”

Mystery Monday – April 4, 2016

April 4, 2016 By Tom Gilliam

Welcome to Week 10 of Mystery Mondays.  The answer to Week Nine’s Mystery Photo is: The observatory at Moraine Farm in Kettering, former home of Colonel Edward A. Deeds and Mrs. Edith Walton Deeds. I took this photo on June 18, 2015.

DMM Mystery Monday-9

We congratulate our randomly drawn winner Danny McKelvey of Kettering! Rapid Fired Pizza certificates are coming your way!

2014-9-26 Moraine Farm Observatory Laboratory

Inside Moraine Farm’s laboratory just below the observatory. – September 26, 2014

Here’s some information about Moraine Farm’s observatory from the Kettering Health Network‘s Moraine Farm brochure.

The observatory dome is one of the architectural highlights of the house. When built, the Warner & Swasey 7-inch refracting telescope in the observatory was one of the first privately owned telescopes of its type in the world.

The laboratory just below the observatory houses a large arc slide projector that Colonel Deeds pointed out the window to project images of vacation photographs from glass lantern slides which had been colored by hand.

We challenge you to tell us where in the Dayton area this photo was taken by filling out the form below.  We’ll do a random drawing from all those with a correct answer and the winner will get 2 pizzas from Rapid Fired Pizza.

Enter here:

We’ll post the winner next Monday with details about the photo as well as a new photo to challenge your knowledge of the Dayton area.

Thanks for playing and good luck!

10 Reasons Why Free Cone Day is the Best Holiday Ever

April 2, 2016 By Guest Contributor

Let’s face it. Holidays can be a whole lot of hype. The dressing up, cooking, shopping and party planning—it’s a lot of work! That’s why Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day is by far our favorite. What other holiday lets you show up to the party uninvited, wearing anything you want, and still gives you a gift? That’s right…no holiday ever. Use the following list to convince your boss or teacher that you need the day off to celebrate Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day 2016 on April 12.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - Everyone is invited.

Everyone is invited!

No guest list, no invite, no RSVP, just show up. We welcome everyone. Even your weird uncle.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - Shop until you drop.

Why shop ‘til you drop?

At Free Cone Day there’s no need to spend a dime, stress over what size someone wears, or wrestle with wrapping paper.

Wear whatever you want!

No black tie, ball gown or costume required, although we do suggest clothing of some kind.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - Leave the cooking to us

Leave the “cooking” to us.

Nothing (not even a root canal) is more painful than having to prepare a five course meal for a group of people who all want something different.

Smiles all around!

What’s not to love about a free cone of any flavor you want? Seriously! It puts a smile on everyone’s face (unlike that turtleneck you re-gifted that had the comfort of a cactus).

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - Best Holiday Ever

No awkward family interactions.

We all love our families, but let’s face it…bring them ALL together under one roof for the first time in three years and you’re living on the edge!

You can put this holiday on repeat.

Why wait for next year’s Free Cone Day? Just get back in line for another free cone. Over and over again. We’re not counting. Really, go for it.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - We're scooping all day

Rain or shine, we’re scooping!

Not hail, nor sleet, nor snow, nor rain, nor…you get the idea. Rest assured, we’re scooping free Ben & Jerry’s no matter what!

No need to travel far.

Planes, trains and automobiles equal lost luggage, missed connections and flat tires. Lucky for you, there’s a solid chance you’ll find a Scoop Shop near you.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - Free ice cream!
