It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Donut !

Look, over at Centerville Stadium, caped superheros of all sorts are descending on the track for a 5k / 10k Walk/Run this Saturday, April 16th!  They are able to leap a dozen pretzel donuts in a single bound.  They are the runners/walkers for this special event.

Dubbed the “Bill’s Donut Superhero Run,” this walk/run event is for kids and adults.   Most importantly it benefits a local charity, the Dayton, Ohio Affiliate Chapter of “A Special Wish Foundation, Inc.,” covering Montgomery, Darke, Mercer, Miami, Greene & Shelby Counties.

The event allows families to participate together, or just kids, or just adults.   Who is your favorite super hero?  Green Lantern?  The Flash?  Wonder Woman? Who will you dress up as?

Join the fun and come dressed as your favorite super hero.  Kids go crazy for this stuff, and what a fun way to promote healthy exercise in their lives.   You even get to have some world famous Bill’s Donuts after the race, as well as Mikesells chips, bananas, and grilled hot dogs.  What a fun Food Adventure!

Super heroes get hungry too, ya know.  Plenty of bottled water will be available for re-hydration of our super powers after the race.

What is your favorite donut?  Blueberry?  Long Johns?  Persian Nuts?  Maybe even stop by for more Bill’s Donuts on the way home, around the corner from the stadium.

Lunch from a Gas Station?

When I lived in Baton Rouge it was common knowledge that the best Boudin Sausage could be found at a roadside gas station on Airline Highway between the capital city and New Orleans. Last year in Kansas City I had the best “burnt ends” at Joe’s. Joe’s is a working gas station where the line for BBQ is an hour long most afternoons. It should have been no surprise that the best Fried Chicken in Kettering can be found at Town and Country Shell Gas Station on the corner of Far Hills and Stroop Road.

 

ChickenFor months, I have kept this little bit of information to myself. Great fried chicken and potato wedges that surpass everyday fast food offerings. Krispy Krunchy Chicken also serves up great wings, fried fish and cajun season fried shrimp. I casually mentioned that this fried food haven was now filling growlers with local beers to the Food Adventures Crew and my secret was out.

 

I unofficially joined the Food Adventures Crew this week and hosted them at my favorite gas station. Hungry Jax, Chef House and the Big Ragu joined me for lunch and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Ragu had the wings, both the bbq and buffalo, as well as the traditional breaded whole wings. Chef House was the most cautious, but with the help of her Housemade Thai Spiced Hot Honey she was quickly on board with the fried chicken fingers. Hungry Jax brought the kids and they approved of the chicken fingers and Mac & Cheese. I stuck to the Cajun fried chicken. We arrived at the end of the lunch hour and the fries were in short supply, so I opted for a side of Jambalaya.
The chicken was cooked perfectly. Crispy flavorful coating and moist and slightly spicy chicken underneath. As a former Louisiana resident I can say the Jambalaya, sausage and chicken, was as authentic as I have found anywhere in Ohio. Two forks up for the spicy rice dish served inside a gas station.

 

The highlight of the lunch came in two parts. Chef House brought an empty 1/2 growler andtaps filled up with Warped Wing’s Gamma Bomb for only $8.00. Gamma Bomb is their American IPA and it really worked with spicy chicken. At 92 IBU it was a bit hoppier than I like but fit the bill for a lunch hour drink. The second surprise was the complimentary honey cheddar biscuit that comes with every order. The Big Ragu was a happy camper when he found the biscuit in his bag atop the wings. The biscuit is sweet and savory all in one buttery bite. This biscuit is almost a sweet dessert after the spicy chicken.

 

A two piece lunch with a side, biscuit, and fountain drink runs about $7.50. Fish and shrimp options can be a little pricier. Family packs and lunch portions are both available. There are only a half dozen seats in the station, but this food is perfect to grab for home or work when in a hurry. With 16 beers on tap and their own growlers for sale it is easy to find a beer to accompany lunch or dinner. You will find Dayton area favorites like Warped Wing, Toxic Brew and Yellow Springs Brewery as well as Rhinegeist, Mad Tree and my personal favorite, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, on tap for a glass, sampler flight or a growler to go.

 

If you find yourself south of town at lunch or in need of a quick grab to take home to the family, keep Town and Country Shell Station in mind. Sometimes the most unlikely of spots offer exactly what you are looking for. Order an extra biscuit. You’ll thank me later.

Help to elevate your own inner condition, as well as raise the vibration of our surrounding communities to create a more harmonious world!

You are welcome to join us for as many meditation sessions as you like. You may come to the center and meditate, or even join us remotely for the meditation sessions. There is never any fee charged to learn, or join us in meditation. We can accommodate close to 300 people in our hall.

If you’re coming for the first time, please come 15 minutes before the start of a meditation session to be given a brief introduction to the Heartfulness method of meditation at our welcome desk. Heartfulness is a silent, heart-based meditation on the source of light present within the heart, with the added benefit of yogic transmission.

Light refreshments will be available. No heavy breakfast or lunch will be provided. Plan to be light in body, mind and spirit!

60 SECOND PLOT SUMMARY (OR AS CLOSE TO THAT TIME AS ONE CAN MAKE IT): Based on part of Joseph Rudyard Kipling’s best-known collection of short stories, the live action version of The Jungle Book stars newcomer Neel Seethi as Mowgli. Mowgli is a “man-cub,” a boy raised by wolves in the jungle after being discovered by Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley), a black panther who discovered him all alone in a cave. While serving as a mentor of sorts, Bagheera turned the young boy over to Raksha (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) and Akela (voiced by Giancarlo Esposito), a pair of wolves who in turn raised him as one of their own. And all is well.


That is until Shere Khan (voiced by Idris Elba), a tiger with burned face, lets Akela and Raksha that he wants Mowgli turned over to him at once – or face dire consequences. 


Doing what they think is right, Akela and Raksha ask Bagheera to lead Mowgli out of the jungle, which is a tough moment for the young man-cub since he doesn’t want to leave the only mother and father he’s ever really known. But once he’s out on his own, Mowgli will discover a side of the jungle he’s never known, full of characters from the slithering Kaa (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) to the lazy but ingenuitive Baloo (voiced by Bill Murray) and the loquacious King Louie (voiced by Christopher Walken), all of which may make the man-cub have to face a decision he never anticipated:


Is he a man-cub or a man – and if so, what does that mean for him in regards to his place in the only home he’s ever known.  

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? People who enjoy films with gorgeous visuals; those who enjoy live action films where the the story moves at a snappy pace; those who felt that the animated version of The Jungle Book is a bit too over-the-top happy/sappy; people who want some realistic “edge” to a tale that should, by its very nature, inherently have some. 

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People that find animals talking creepy and/or weird; anyone who believes older, revered films shouldn’t be remade for any reason; those who find the action scenes a bit too intense for young children (or his or her self); anyone who feels a more “hard-edged” Jungle Book is not needed
SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? A film that brings a maturity to a coming of age tale that by its very nature needs to embrace its animalistic nature, The Jungle Book is a very well done tale that brings its subject matter to life in a way where the call of the wild is answered loudly and vividly.


Child actors are a very mixed lot; while some make a breakthrough performance in their debut film (see Osment, Haley Joe), others often go on to fail to live up to and/or embrace the talent they show in that role thereafter (see Osment, Haley Joe) or worse (see Lloyd, Jake for a recent example). Newcomer Neel Seethi doesn’t do anything remarkable to show superstar potential as the man-cub of the jungle, but he does a very competent job in bringing the essence of Mowgli – a young boy in a world that is clearly not his by birth but becomes his by his actions and spirit – to life. 


What really makes the movie, however, is the synchronicity between the vocal performances of the film’s animal stars and the animation under director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf, the big guy from Swingers and Chef – don’t get mad at me; he was heavy in both movies!) Whereas Nyong’o brings heart, depth and a mother’s love to her role as Raksha and Kingsley adds a stern, old world father sensibility, Murray brings a terrific sense of humor to Baloo that makes the character lovable at each turn while Walken brings a fantastic balance of blowhard and boyish enthusiasm to his role. 


Still, what brings everything together so well is the coordination of the action, emotion and humor under Favreau’s watch, all of which makes for a wonderfully entertaining package enjoyable for adults and children alike. The intense scenes are truly intense, the heartfelt ones are touching without being sappy and the humor comes at the right times without ever being insulting to your intelligence, no matter your age.


And as far as remakes of films you never thought you’d ever want to see go, The Jungle Book delivers a wild and wonderful romp through the jungle with moralistic undertones of which Kipling himself would likely be proud.

Food Network’s “Cooks Vs. Cons” Now Casting

cooks-vs-cons-1The show tries to answer the question… Are some home cooks good enough to beat a pro. But there is a  twist and a secret ingredient thrown into the mix. Master of modern cuisine, Geoffrey Zakarian hosts the next generation of cooking competition, a battle that asks the ultimate question: Could a talented home cook beat a pro, or does a true professional have skills that no amateur could match? With a level playing field, and no one knowing which cook is which, only a blind taste test will prove who has the best dish. If the professional is victorious, he or she will take home $10,000, but if the home cook can beat the odds and take down the pro, the amateur walk away with $15,000!

 

The Food Network show just premiered a few weeks back and is already looking ahead to season 2.  Cooks vs. Cons levels the playing field by making this a blind competition. Often times professional chefs compete, their reputations and experience precede them making an unbiased opinion of the food itself difficult. “Cooks Vs. Cons” takes care of that problem.  The competition is completely blind, no one knows who is competing or the skill level of the competition, not the cooks and not the judges.

Mobile Boutique Makes Its Debut

Dayton Most Metro has exclusive first scoop on a new mobile boutique that is ready for business.

“Bon Voyage Boutique” will bring Dayton’s first Airstream brand mobile shopping boutique to the masses.  In recent years, mobile boutiques have become more popular.  Owner Jacquie  Powell has been obsessed with this concept for a while.  She had searched and searched for the perfect mobile unit.  Jacquie found the Airstream in August after searching all over Ohio, North Carolina, and Indiana.

Ready for business

Then the work began.  Her and her team gutted it down to the studs. While Jacquie did much of the work, she used local carpenter Ryan Spencer to transform  into a the Airstream into a shop.   Ashley Powell of Luken Interiors was in charge of design.  Finally, Brett Walker from Asher’s Car Detail, has polished the “camper.”  Jacquie told us there are many people to give credit to, that helped make her dream come true.

Bon Voyage Boutique will feature women’s fashions purchased in New York during fashion shows.  From clothing and shoes, to jewelry and accessories, the selection will be fun and fashionable.  Jacquie makes sure all the products are American made.  She chose only to carry American made because as a retailer she feels it is her responsibility to provide ethically sourced and eco friendly fashion. Eventually,  Bon Voyage Boutique would like to become a “fair trade company,” meaning their products are socially and environmentally sustainable.  Jacquie’s goal is to spread awareness about the fashion industry and the effects it has globally.

Bon Voyage is currently booking private parties, also doing rallies and festivals in the Dayton/Cincinnati area.

Do you have any rituals? Bedtime? Work? Morning?

Life comes at us in waves, and we don’t often have the time or take the time to appreciate the details. One way to combat this passivity, this letting life happen to us, is to develop some rituals around the simplest day-to-day activities. My rituals may look nothing like whatever would turn you on, but I thought I’d share some of mine to give you an idea of what taking the time to smell the flowers can look like in your own life.

The Ritual: Morning coffee

Every morning I walk over to Press on Wayne Ave. to grab a coffee. I can make my own coffee at home (which would be a nice ritual in and of itself), but I make it a point to walk to Press, chat with the baristas, and take in the morning. My mornings sometimes start really early—like 6 AM early—so I’ll hit Press after my early clients.

What it does for me

I get to drink a world class cup of coffee, but more importantly, I’ve found connections at Press that I don’t know I could have found anywhere else. I ALWAYS have interesting conversations there with the owners, the people who work there, or the diverse range of former Ohio State football players, musicians, artists, moms, dads, and occasional misanthropes one is likely to find there. This ritual is especially important if I’m having a bad day or I’m feeling especially stressed about running my own business. Sure, I can brew my own coffee at home, but once a day, every day, you’ll find me at Press. The ridiculously good coffee is just the starting point. I’m really there for the community.

The Ritual: Sitting and Reflecting

photo-1448998239730-7682a10fd814Lately, I’ve been finishing my training sessions and heading over to work on a new personal training studio in the Oregon District. Friday evening I finished at 6:30 PM and worked straight through the weekend until about 9 PM on Sunday.

But you know what? I finished every one of those evenings by just sitting. Running one’s own business can be stressful, time-consuming, and frightening, and it’s easy to get lost in those less-than-fun emotions. (Lately, I think I’ve mostly been frightened). So every night, no matter how late, no matter how tired, no matter how ready for bed and no matter how bloodied my hands (cleaning agents + dry hands + cinderblock walls), I just sat. Admired our work. Thought of the future. Imagined how happy my clients will be to walk into the space.

What it does for me

A funny thing happened when I allowed myself that reflection, which could have seemed like a frivolous waste of time. I relaxed! You might not be opening up your own shop, but at the end of your work day you can take a few moments in your cubicle, your office, or in your truck to take in the weather/view/birds/sunset/trees. I’m not saying you’ll be able to turn a terrible day into a good one, but that taking the time to sit with what you’ve done can be a great way to lower the temperature and remind yourself that you’re okay. I know I need those reminders a lot.

The Ritual: Writing for Dayton Most Metro

Every Tuesday evening I sit down to write this column whether I have the time or not. (Lately I have not had the time). I go through the usual writer’s process of freaking out because I’m worried people will hate what I write, freaking out because I’m not sure I have anything useful to say, and freaking out because that’s what I like to do.

Then I just sit and let my mind wander to what I’ve been thinking about lately. What’s been on my mind? What questions have I been receiving online or from clients? What do I want people to know?

And then it happens. I just start typing. And in the end, I’ve been delivering these columns once a week without fail since I signed on.

What it does for me

Writing more than anything else is a discipline. Having this weekly deadline has forced me to be more mindful throughout my week about what I’m seeing, hearing, and feeling. I have to be aware of what the people around me are asking consistently because I know at some point I’m going to have to sit down in front of a blinking cursor.

Sometimes commitments can be soul-sucking regrets. But this Dayton Most Metro column has made me a better and more attentive coach because it has forced me to notice patterns, and the writing process itself has forced me to sharpen my own thinking around some complicated subjects.

Is there a project you can take on at work that would stretch you? A volunteer opportunity? Could you resolve to write a letter or an email to someone who’s been important to you at least once a week? The difference between an assignment and a ritual is mindset–and you’re totally in control of that.

Your rituals

The point of all of this stuff is to give yourself permission to notice the small, beautiful things that surround you every single day. We know the world is a cruel, hard place. And we’re here and often there’s nothing we can do about the cruelty or the hardness. But we do possess the power to take a moment every day to find what’s good in us and what surrounds us.

City, City, Bang! Bang! Dayton’s Amazing Recovery!

For so many Daytonians, a dream is being realized…a vital, vibrant and vivid city! The amazing turnaround is all most too much to believe, but cities everywhere are taking notice. “You have to go back to the 90’s and the formation of the Downtown Dayton Partnership  to really see a beginning in all of this,” says Mayor Nan Whaley, beaming as she speaks of the turnaround town. “Their vision along with 2010 Greater Downtown Plan really got things rolling.” The plan was set up to make Dayton a LWP (live.work.play.) city. “I feel that people are discovering that Dayton is a authentic town, a genuine place where people are now believing in their city. We came off of 10 truly rough years, and we have developed a plan to maintain growth for the next 20. Through this vision, and a hard-working city commission, we have seen a boost in small business and housing.”

Housing is what so many Daytonians are impressed by. Builders are finding it hard to keep up with demand. You cannot visit downtown without seeing new housing, apartments, and lofts. “Our Water Street project is the fastest leasing project we have ever had.” said Jamie Moore of Crawford-Hoying corner-renderingDevelopment. “Dayton is alive and on-fire!” And the developer said, ‘there is more to come…’ but remained hush-hush about details. “It’s exciting, really exciting!” he teased.

What are other Daytonians hoping for? “People want shopping, a grocery, and more local restaurants.” Whaley added, “As people move downtown, the demand increases and businesses follow. The Dragons Ballpark was instrumental in the riverfront growth. So many people investing in the community over time has paid off. It caused the city to get more aggressive about customer service and communication. The city’s reputation has been buoyed by the change in the level of services.”

-3Looking around you see what the mayor speaks about. Just about every month, new businesses are making their mark downtown. Restaurants like Arepas and Corner Kitchen;  breweries like Dayton Beer Company and Barrel House; and shopping like Confetti and Eclectic Essentials now dot the urban landscape. Services are on the rise as well. “The Cannery will be at retail capacity for the first time in it’s history.” says Chrissie Jacobs, the leasing agent for the project. “Our property will play host to yoga, video production, printing services, a florist, a theatrical company, a photographer and a salon.” Great news for the newcomers to the city. “Our residential component is at 97% as well.”

Mayor Whaley sees a strong, successful future. “We have changed out tune from ‘we can’t do anything about it’ to ‘let’s get these problems fixed and continue to improve our city.” What does she see in the near future? “The kayak park is a game-changer. Having more recreation on-and-around the river benefits everyone. The talk of a resurrected Arcade has people so excited, and we are all cautiously optimistic, but that process will be slow and phased in as developers see fit. Of course, the housing boom will continue with more retail on ground floors and residents living in all kinds of unique living spaces.”DSC_0250_1024

Perception has definitely changed. “Real estate downtown is red-hot.” Says Denise Swick, local realty expert. “People are buying properties in the city at a maddening pace. It’s hard to find real estate for buyers, a great problem to have!” Swick says it renews a faith in downtown living.

In all of this, probably most important is the pride Daytonians are gaining. “Citizens are betting on their city for the first time in a long time, ” says the Mayor. “They love Dayton, and Dayton Pride is alive and well!” You can truly feel the pride, the joy and excitement. Downtown Dayton….city, city BANG! BANG!

 

 

 

 

Fairgrounds To Remain Downtown Through 2017 Fair

082515roundhouseThe Montgomery County Agricultural Society Board announced today that the Montgomery County Fair will remain at its current location in Dayton through the 2017 fair season.

 

“As we consider a new home for the Montgomery County Fair, the Board recognizes the importance of extending the process in order to thoughtfully consider options and ultimately select the ideal location,” said John Friedline, President of the Agricultural Society Board. “The fair will remain in Dayton for 2016 and 2017.”

 

The Agricultural Society Board continues to work with the City of Dayton, Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Port Authority on producing a request for proposals for development of the fairgrounds’ current 37-acre site on South Main Street in Dayton. The RFP is anticipated to be released in mid-May.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for the Fair, the City of Dayton and the entire County,” added Friedline. “The current site is a prime location for development that will transform the southern section of downtown Dayton; while a new, state-of-the-art fairground will take shape at another, more expansive site.”

The Board is considering several new locations for the fairgrounds that each feature at least 100 acres.

 

“Additional land gives us a fantastic opportunity to build modern facilities that benefit fairgoers and opens us opportunities for hosting other events,” said Friedline.

 

The 2016 Montgomery County Fair is August 31st through September 5th.

 

The 2017 Fair Dates will be July 10-15, 2017.

According to Arrow’s Liquor Manager Jennifer Blair, she was at her son’s baseball game when she got the call with the opportunity for this special appearance. “He’s bringing a dj, we’ll be playing his music and customers that purchase his vodka will have a chance to get their picture taken with 50 Cent.”

The 40-year-old rapper has recently partnered with EFFEN Vodka, which is produced in Holland. According to 50 Cent: “‘Effen’ means ‘smooth’ in Dutch. But I know my audience and I know what they’re gonna do. And they’re gonna have fun with that.”  His preferred Effen cockail he calls the “Beast”: a mix of the Black Cherry flavor with vanilla simple syrup, white cranberry juice and fresh lemon juice and garnished with brandied cherries.

‘One Slight Hitch’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Wedding Woes

Cuteness abounds inside the Loft Theatre as the Human Race Theatre Company presents the second professional production of comedian Lewis Black’s comedy “One Slight Hitch.” The play’s Cincinnati setting is cute. The notion of a summer wedding is cute. A slacker ex-boyfriend provoking chaos is cute. A precocious teenager grooving to music on her Walkman is cute. But conceptual issues dampen this flimsy, problematic farce which transpires like an overlong “Saturday Night Live” sketch pushing hard for laughs and relying heavily on nostalgia for appeal.

Directed by Margarett Perry and written by Black roughly 35 years ago, “One Slight Hitch” brews its frenzy from the relatable vantage point of the Colemans, a close-knit suburban Republican family. On her special day, aspiring writer Courtney (Dana Berger) must choose between her just-came-into-town ex Ryan (Alex Curtis) or her super straight-laced therapist-fiancé Harper (Kyle Nunn). Courtney’s devoted, exasperated parents Doc (Brian Dykstra) and Delia (Rita Rehn) would rather her err on the side of caution (a.k.a. stability), but there’s something about bad boy Ryan that still fuels her fire. As wedding preparations reach fever pitch, and as Courtney’s sisters PB (Cecily Dowd) and Melanie (Alex Sunderhaus) attempt to make sense of the madness around them, Courtney has a life-altering epiphany that brings everything to a screeching halt.

 
Black, an Emmy and two-time Grammy winner who appeared on Broadway in his 2012 one-man show “Running on Empty,” knows a thing or two about sarcasm and timing having built his career on those comedic attributes. But right from the start his foundation is askew here. At the outset, the story is startlingly told from PB’s perspective as she joyfully reflects on all things 1981. Is a pop culture laundry list really necessary in the first five minutes? Also, and in addition to Black creating two oddly unfunny, momentum-stalling moments in which Doc speaks to Harper’s offstage parents, weak character development particularly hinders Doc and Delia from being anything more than an over-the-top, purely observational combination of confusion and mockery. Trouble is we’ve seen this before from the standard sitcom playbook. A husband frantically attempts to maintain peace while keeping close to the alcohol as his wife freaks out as if the world is coming to an end. And I can’t believe the consistently chipper Harper actually exits the stage twice to the sound of chirping birds. Cue laugh track!

Script quandaries aside, Perry’s energetic cast doesn’t contain any weak links, an absolute saving grace. The hilariously fussy Berger gives credence to Courtney’s frustrating dilemma. The charming, slovenly handsome Curtis conveys Ryan with an edginess suggesting his troublemaker tendencies and an endearing sensitivity proving why Courtney found him attractive in the first place. The bubbly Dowd, a Centerville High School junior who recently gave a breakthrough performance as Winifred Banks in Muse Machine’s production of “Mary Poppins,” impresses in her professional debut with a sweetly sincere and effervescent aura. Sunderhaus, a Wright State University alumna who appeared last season in the Race’s production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” injects sass and a tinge of sibling rivalry into her fetching portrayal. Dykstra, seen on Broadway in 2013 opposite Tom Hanks in Nora Ephron’s fascinating Tony-nominated dramedy “Lucky Guy,” effectively channels Black’s intonations and mannerisms. He also conducts the ongoing hysteria with ample vivacity despite his occasionally unrealistic gesturing. The hunky Nunn, a clean-cut, All-American epitome of an Abercrombie & Fitch model seen last season in the Race’s “Miracle on South Division Street,” delightfully contrasts Curtis, particularly shining when Harper attempts to diagnose Ryan in one of the play’s strongest and most revealing moments. Rehn, who appeared on Broadway in such musicals as “Nine” and “A Chorus Line,” relishes Delia’s madcap antics, but beautifully pauses the craziness late in Act 2 when Delia poignantly reminds her daughters of her courtship with Doc and the sacrifices they’ve made.
Ray Zupp’s attractively detailed set strikingly signifies the Colemans’ upper-class status. Janet G. Powell, having costumed “Steel Magnolias” for the Race last fall, eye-catchingly evokes the Greed Decade once more in amusing wedding garb for the ladies complete with huge bows and ruffles. John Rensel’s lighting notably spotlights Dowd in her narrative, music-centric duties. Sound designer Todd Mack Reischman (“Seussical,” “Big River”) returns to the Race to ensure the pulsating vibes of “Bette Davis Eyes” and “Jessie’s Girl” haven’t lost their allure.

In one of his many brainless retorts, Ryan proudly states, “I haven’t worked it all out but it sounds right.” His credo sums up the essence of this forgettable romp.

Crafted & Cured – A Dream Come True for Local Entrepreneurs

Crafted and CuredTwo and a half years ago, two friends and co-workers that shared a passion for craft beer and high quality cured meats and cheeses envisioned a unique space where you could find obscure beers, ciders and sours along with family owned, small batch wines and champagne. It took quite a while but finally their vision is coming to fruition as Crafted & Cured.

 

Together Christian Alvarez and Andy Routson have quite the background that makes them a great team to lead this inspiring business. Chris is a chef, with his degree from Le Cordon Bleu in California. He will be making all kinds of pickles, mustards, anything to go with their charcuterie.

Eventually, his goal is to cure their own meats i20160407_152654n the market itself with other vendors. Wait till you see their meat slicer, flown in straight from Italy, it is an eye catcher. Bright red with a hand crank wheel to give you the sheerest of cuts on prosciuttos, this is sure to please with fine meats.

Andy is an avid craft beer drinker and trader. He is working towards becoming a certified cicerone. (A cicerone is a certification awarded to an individual who has demonstrated an expertise in beer service.) He comes from a family of entrepreneurs and has always known he wanted to own his own business. Obviously, one of the most important questions on the table during my chat with them was what their favorite styles of beer are. Andy loves stouts and anytcrowlerhing barrel aged. Chris is all about those IPA’s. I am going to love drinking with these guys!!

Crafted & Cured simply put is a growler house, not a bar. This is a place to come taste some samples of unique brews and take them home to enjoy. Not only do they offer the growlers that we have all become so familiar with they also have a crowler! A crowler is a 32 ounce can to-go that they will right in front of you! Crafted & Cured will have 60 taps with 10-12 of those dedicated to ciders, sours and meads. Dayton has a great beer scene and we have been seeing the new trend of beer infusions popping up all over town, especially at Toxic Brew Co. Luckily Crafted and Cured has a Randall, made by Dogfish Head, to infuse beers right there at the bar! They are working closely with their rep Mike Freeman to make sure they only offer small batch, family owned, grower vineyards. Monday – Friday during the day till 4:30pm at the Theatre Guild, right across the street to the right, and from 5 pm on at the Behavioral Health Center on Wayne, also across the street to the left, and all day and night on the weekends here as well.

This soft opening period will last approximately one month and will not include the cured side of the business quite yet. They plan to master the beverage side of the business then launch a grand opening in coordination with the opening of District Provisions. The grand opening will mark the start of the cured side of the business. And don’t worry, District Provisions will open soon!

The rest of the building is going to be fantastic. It’s big and beautiful and full of potential. District Provisions is a turn of century style neighborhood market. 12 Mile River Race and Fun Float on Great Miami

River-Race-Its-Your-RaceAdventures on the Great Miami is excited to be hosting the Miami Valley’s first River Race and Fun Float on Saturday, June 25. Launching from Treasure Island Park in Troy, the course stretches over 12 miles of the beautiful Great Miami River, ending at Adventures on the Great Miami in Tipp City.

“We’ve set up six check points along the way and will have floating volunteers to ensure a safe and fun day on the river for everyone,” Brian Johnson, organizer said. “It’s our first race but we’ve looked at a number of similar events to see what works best.”

Race prizes include cash, credit to White Water Warehouse in Dayton and a brand new S.U.P. or Kayak for the overall first place winner. Fun float awards will be given out for costumes, team flag and the team who collects the most debris from out of the river. float

“The race is a great opportunity for serious water sports enthusiasts and the fun float is a way to get creative with some friends and share a day out on the water,” Johnson said.

Following the race, participants and spectators alike are invited to the after party at Adventures on the Great Miami with lawn games, live music, craft beer and food trucks. River Race and Fun Float participants will be entitled to a complimentary meal and night of camping.

“It’s going to be a great day, filled with a lot of activities both in and out of the river,” Johnson said. “We’re excited to host people back at camp to celebrate the first of hopefully many river races to come.”

For those interested, the Great Miami 12 Mile River Race & Fun Float will be held on June 25 with racers launching from Treasure Island Park in Troy at 12pm, followed by an after party held at the finish line at Adventures on the Great Miami in Tipp City.

Individual racer entry (Kayak & S.U.P.) is $50, team racer entry (canoe) is $75 per team and fun float entry is $35. Kayak and S.U.P. rentals are available through Adventures on the Great Miami for $20 per person. Online registration can be done through itsyourrace.com
