They’ll Keep the Light on for You

April 11, 2016 By Megan Cooper

Into the Ether, the current exhibition featuring contemporary light artists at the Dayton Art Institute, Villareal - Starinvites you to interact with the art. While there are some actual hands-on opportunities, around every corner you’ll engage in a very personal experience. Whether it’s dual holograms that offer a different experience for each viewer based on their own height and distance from the piece or a work where the colors are plugged into a randomizer to guarantee a unique show for each viewer – this exhibit is always changing and created especially for you.

When we visited, a few favorites of our group included:

  • An LED star to welcome you; it’s immediately clear this exhibition is active and alive.
  • An opportunity to put yourself in the middle of the art – and even change the colors of the light reflecting all around you. Texture, light and shape all blend together.image1
  • A large screen with pixels that fall like snow, until you notice that those pixels are clumping into shapes. Eventually, an eery image starts to appear – and it’s the people in the room! (pictured, we went meta by performing our own version of The Scream).

image2 (1)
Surprise bonus: a lot of the more handy (and hands-on) visitors during our tour were able to get up close and explore just how the art and technology blends together. With this innovative blend, it’s the perfect trip for STEM (or – STEAM!) students who want to think about art/technology differently. Or – a perfect night out for the couple with one left-brained partner and one right-brained partner; this offers a little something for everyone. Plus – you get to play with light-up blocks at the end of the tour (and even buy a set in the gift shop if you’re inspired).

Into the Ether continues through June 26.

Local Filmmakers Debut Short Film at Jewish Film Festival

April 9, 2016 By Film Dayton

MakingMorningStarAcademy Award-nominated, Yellow Springs-based filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar debut their latest short film Sunday, April 17th at 5:15pm at The Neon, as part of the Dayton Jewish Film Festival.

Featuring interviews and footage of the composer Ricky Ian Gordon, librettist William M. Hoffman, and stage director Ron Daniels, Making Morning Star presents a behind-the-scenes look at the joys and challenges of developing a new opera. Much of the footage was shot in Cincinnati during a 10-day workshop hosted by Cincinnati Opera and CCM, part of the Opera Fusion: New Works collaboration. The 36-minute documentary tells the story of the creation a new opera, Morning Star, that tells the story of immigrants living in New York’s Lower East Side in the early 20th century who find their dreams tarnished by hardships – the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, World War I, and the Great Depression.

Stick around after the screening for a panel discussion of the film with local Academy Award nominated filmmakers Julia Reichert & Steven Bognar along with artists from the Cincinnati Opera. $9 per ticket, $8 for students (student tickets available at the door only).

‘The Wild Party’ Review – Dare to Defy Productions – Revenge & Revelry

April 9, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Dare to Defy Productions terrifically explores the brutal depths of an extremely complicated relationship in its vibrant and sexy presentation of Andrew Lippa’s 2000 off-Broadway musical “The Wild Party,” adapted from Joseph Moncure March’s 1928 narrative poem of the same name and staged inside the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center.

wild party

(left to right) Zach King (Burrs), Laura Ellen Moore (Kate), Natalie Sanders (Queenie), and Desmond Thomas (Black) are a conflicted foursome in Dare to Defy Productions’ presentation of Andrew Lippa’s Jazz Age musical “The Wild Party.” (Contributed photo)

In this Prohibition-era New York tale, Queenie, a sultry dancer, and Burrs, a vaudeville comedian, are dangerous, abusive lovers who have reached an emotional breaking point but can’t bear to live without each other. It’s a messy game, a vicious cycle, which worsens when Queenie asks Burrs to co-host a decadent party in their Manhattan apartment, ultimately exposing him for the louse he is in front of their eccentric friends. But situations take an unexpected turn when Queenie’s self-absorbed, drug-addicted best friend Kate arrives with the mysterious Black who falls hard for Queenie. As Queenie discovers a new soulmate in Black, and Kate attempts to ignite a spark with Burrs, the rowdy festivities tragically spiral out of control.

Lippa received a Tony Award nomination for his 2010 score of “The Addams Family,” but his best work thus far rests here with his tuneful array of vivid character numbers and ensemble-driven delights skillfully secured by music director Lorri Topping’s fine orchestra. In particular, Queenie and Burrs’ songs are engagingly introspective (“Out of the Blue,” “Maybe I Like It This Way,” “What is It About Her?,” “How Did We Come to This”) which enjoyably contrasts spirited anthems such as “Raise the Roof,” “A Wild, Wild Party,” and “Let Me Drown.” As librettist, Lippa’s work isn’t as sharp (some of the minor characters are either underwritten or underwhelming), but his firm, fully fleshed portraits of the two key couples effectively fuels passion and suspense as the dramatic action swells.

Director Mackensie King, guiding a cast of 15, absolutely ensures this party is indeed wild. Taking a cue from Queenie and Kate’s pact to approach the evening with “no limits, no boundaries, no compromise,” King amps up the gaiety, mayhem and danger by seating the audience on three sides for complete, impactful effect. Refreshingly, the audience is treated as intimate participants instead of mere observers. Trust me, when the cast sheds their clothes in Act 2 you might as well forget about your ideas of a comfort zone. Furthermore, choreographer Lisa Glover’s outstandingly vivacious and athletic choreography, filled with a fun, Jazz Age flapper essence and shades of Bob Fosse, works in tandem with King’s vision to splendidly heighten the show’s cheeky energy. My eyes were constantly drawn to nearly every movement particularly within the fascinating opening number chronicling Queenie and Burrs’ history (“Queenie Was a Blonde”) as well as the ensemble standouts “What a Party,” “Raise the Roof,” “The Juggernaut,” and “A Wild, Wild Party.” She also strikingly acts and dances the role of Nadine, a young girl who somehow finds her way into these debauched proceedings. Based on Glover’s fantastic contributions, I feel the urge to predict she will lead and choreograph “Sweet Charity” locally or elsewhere one of these days.
King’s cast is led by the appealing, credibly cohesive duo of Natalie Sanders and Zach King. Sanders, a vocal powerhouse, weaves a beautifully complex arc reiterating Queenie’s mind-boggling battle of being simultaneously disgusted by Burrs yet compelled by his charms. King, impressively expanding the breadth of his abilities, intensely attacks with intimidation and unsettling volatility befitting Burrs’ alarmingly unstable behavior. As Black, strong tenor Desmond Thomas is more sweetly sensitive than suavely seductive, but his chemistry with Sanders poignantly evolves in his heartfelt rendition of “I’ll Be Here.” As the feisty Kate, Laura Ellen Moore lacks full-throttle ferocity (her flashy introductory solo “Look At Me Now” is especially weak) but her vulnerability throughout is a plus. A.J. Breslin (mostly shirtless as knucklehead boxer Eddie) and Hayley Penchoff (ditzy Mae) are adorably spotlighted in “Two of a Kind.” As lesbian Madeline True, Samantha Creech winningly shares her longing for “An Old-Fashioned Love Story.” The flamboyance of Jeffrey Mack (Oscar D’Armano) and Brennan Paulin (Phil D’Armano) propels the comedy within “A Wild, Wild Party.” André Tomlinson (the mute Jackie) partners with Glover for a haunting take on “Jackie’s Last Dance” reflecting Queenie and Burrs’ destructive core. The cast includes Thomas Cole Schreier (Sam), Danielle Kubasky (Dolores), Jamal Caan (Max), and Amanda Carter (Daisy). King’s artistic team includes scenic designer Ray Zupp and lighting designer Derek Dunavent.
If you’re in the mood to let loose, don’t miss this daring, edgy showcase.

“The Wild Party” concludes today at 2 and 8 p.m. inside the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Act One: 70 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Tickets are $21.50. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com. Patrons are advised the show contains adult content.

Where to Celebrate National Empanada Day in Dayton

April 8, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

These tasty and convenient Latin-American-style turnovers can be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They can be served as appetizers or snacks, but they can also easily make a full and satisfying meal.

These delicious bundles can be prepared with so many different types of fillings, from traditional savory fillings to mouthwatering sweet fillings. There are very traditional fillings, called rellenos or condumios in Spanish, that are different from one country to another. Even within the same country, different regions might have specific empanadas that they are known for. However, when it comes to options for empanada fillings, the sky is the limit, you can stick to the classic fillings or you can create your own based on inspiration from other dishes. You can combine flavors and ingredients that you love, or simply use the ingredients you have available at the moment.

You can even buy ready-made empanada discs at many Latin grocery stores, but you can also easily make the dough at home.  The most popular empanada dough is made with wheat flour. However, empanada dough can be made with corn flour or corn meal, mashed plantains, potatoes, yuca or cassava, sweet potatoes, and more. Sweet empanada dough can also be made with chocolate, almond flour, spiced with cinnamon and clove, with citrus rind, and more flavors.

Today, April 8 is National Empanada Day so here are five places you can enjoy them in Dayton:

Water, Water Everywhere….And Your Ticket To Protect It!

April 7, 2016 By Joshua Stucky

It’s Earth Month, and Square One Salon is working hard to take care of it. Along with the members of the Ohio Chapter of the Water Committee of Sierra Club and supporters from across the state, the salons in the Dayton area are doing their part to protect our water supply. “We partner with the Sierra Club and Aveda every year to support clean water.” says Nina Dozier, manager of the downtown Square One location. “Our goal this year is $5000, which goes up slightly every year. So far, we have $3745.”

How can you get involved?

“We are having a raffle this year, and you have a chance to win $1000 which is divided $500 in Aveda products, and a $500 gift card for 1st place! We also have 2nd and 3rd place winners,  $750.00 and $500.00 prizes, respectively. Raffle tickets are 1 for $5; 3 for $10; or 6 for $20.” Dozier assures all supporters that “100% of the funds go directly keeping Ohio waterways clean. Raffle tickets are being sold at all 6 Square One Locations: University of Dayton, Downtown Dayton, Oak Creek, Centerville, Downtown Columbus and New Albany.

You can also support the Earth Month/Clean Water initiative by  joining the Square One Staff as they pour beer at the 5th Street Brew Pub on Sunday, April 17th from 12pm to 3:00pm. “You have to have clean water to make great beer,” remarked Canaan Good, who works at the salon. “I have been working with Square One Salon and Aveda for over 15 years, and I love their mission to save our water supply. Having children and seeing what happened in Michigan really hit home. I believe we can make a huge impact!”

“We love working with Aveda,” says Brent Johnson, one of Square One’s Proprietors. “Since 2007, they have raised $38 million to protect clean water. And the Sierra Club has helped us distribute dozens of rain barrels in the Miami Valley.” Johnson said you can learn about rain barrels by logging onto www.sierraclub.org/ohio. “One of the greatest parts of my job is knowing the company I work with cares this much about the Earth, ” added Dozier. “It’s nice to know we can make a difference.”

Protect Water, Change Lives is this year’s Earth Month theme. For more information go to squareonesalon.com or aveda.com/cleanwater. You can also reach Square One by calling 937.461.2222 to get information about Clean Water, Sierra Club rain barrels and Aveda’s mission.

Abandoned/orphaned by her parents in her youth, Michelle has overcome her rough upbringing to become the 47th wealthiest woman in America. Now a powerhouse  as the CEO of three various companies, Michelle is on top of the world. Her success hasn’t made life an easier for Claire (Kristen Bell), Michelle’s top assistant, the Smithers to her Mr. Burns who is also a single mother to Rachel (Ella Anderson), a nice young girl who spends most of her free time with her Dandelions youth troop.

Then her former lover and top rival Renault – a.k.a. Ron (Peter Dinklage) – gets her busted for insider trading, which lands her in federal prison for 5 months and her empire in shambles.

Now with nowhere else to go, Michelle comes looking for refuge at the home of her former assistant, who reluctantly agrees to take her in until she can get back on her feet. But as one might expect, going from the penthouse to the proverbial outhouse of Claire’s tiny two-bedroom apartment. But Michelle is a woman with grit, determination and a never take “no” for an answer attitude, so once she sees an opportunity to re-establish herself, she is ready to seize it – even if that means shaking up Claire and Rachel’s world to no end.

And that’s because she’s the boss – and a boss does what a boss has to do to stay on top.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Melissa McCarthy fans; people who enjoy watching children – and to lesser extent, adults – behave inappropriately for their age; people who enjoy movies where the nice guy gets a break; people who like movies with characters that, while they may not be well-developed, are fun

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People that will find Peter Dinklage and/or his character creepy; Anyone who doesn’t find likable characters enough to carry the film’s rather ludicrous third act; people who believe that McCarthy (whether fairly or unfairly) tends to play the same type of characters, anyone who hates when Saturday Night Live sketches seem to run on too long.
SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? A movie with some really likable characters that aren’t exactly placed into a great movie all the time, The Boss is entertaining enough to be forgiven for its shortcomings … Which is why at times it feels like an overly long SNL sketch.

McCarthy is very good at playing characters who appear to be one thing but have a little more going on underneath the surface than one might think at first glance. The Boss continues that streak by adding layers to her character, who is all bluster at first before a more sensitive side is eventually revealed. However, given how Dinklage was either asked or chose to play his character in ridiculously creepy fashion, you might find yourself unsettled or at the very least a little freaked out at times and not so much comedically as McCarthy’s husband/co-writer/director Ben Falcone intended. I’m sure the creative team of the McCarthy. Falcone and Steven Mallory were thinking of a Zoolander– or Anchorman-like level comedic foil for McCarthy, but … Nah, it just doesn’t always come off that way.

Likewise, Bell is capable at playing the straight woman to McCarthy’s antics as her character is supposed to be a dull single mom … And MAN does she nail it almost to the point where you care about everyone around her more than her. She’s too much of the straightwoman at times, which in turn makes you feel her pain way too much. She’s not bad; it’s just that her character has no value on her own and is only best when paired with McCarthy’s or Tyler Labine as her co-worker/potential would be love interest. While we know everyone around Claire is having fun, it gets to a point where EVERYONE but Claire is having fun.

Fortunately, McCarthy has enough to gumption to keep things moving along and both the supporting and younger cast really shine in the lunatic situations in which they are placed. The aforementioned Labine is terrific in representing the everyman who works in a boring job and is a nice guy who deserves better while never coming off as a lovable loser and McCarthy’s female co-stars – Kristen Schaal, Cecily Strong and Annie Mumolo bring a lot of the party as zany/over-the-top sparring partners for McCarthy, Mumolo especially as a would be power mom of an ambitious girl scout-type. (Eva Peterson plays a scary, foul-mouthed teenage girl about as well as you can comedically, so The Boss could be a start of a nice career for her.)

In short, The Boss is entertaining at its best – there’s a rumble sequence that’s phenomenal – but it’s far fro a perfect film by any means. Dinklage’s character is supposed to be over-the-top, but whether or not you find it funny or just dumb remains to be seen. Likewise, there are a lot of lulls between the funny moments and some are much funnier than others, so depending on your attention level you may find the boss somewhere between “good” to “just okay” on your entertainment scale.

If nothing else, The Boss will serve as a nice palate cleanser to anyone who has found spring’s early offerings at the theaters to be a bit … Well, not suitable for full-time employment.

Let’s Talk Butt Stuff

April 6, 2016 By Jason Harrison

If you’re committed to the pursuit of strength, then you ought not worry about whether or not you’ll be able to fit into those skinny jeans. In fact, if you’re getting progressively stronger, more mobile, and healthier, chances are you’re NOT going to be able to fit into those skinny jeans. That’s a good thing.

photo-1452460028020-ee243f477860

But I still have clients, mostly women, who worry about fitting into their same jeans after a few weeks of working out. They’re losing body fat, feeling stronger, and moving better, but there’s a connection between how and whether clothes fit some women and their self esteem that I’ve not been able to break, try as I might.

So let me make the case for big butts. I’m not talking big butts from indulging in too many fried cheese sticks, but big, powerful butts sculpted from lunges, glute bridges, hip thrusts, and curtsey lunges.

The performance case

If you want to be a strong squatter or deadlifter, you’ll need a strong butt. These full body movements demand what we call a strong “posterior chain”–that is, the muscles that predominate on the back of your body from top to bottom–and your glutes are a relatively important part of that chain. Glutes are responsible for what we call “hip extension.” Want to pick up something heavy from the floor safely? Hip extension is a key part of the equation.

The metabolism case

The biggest mistake I see people making in commercial gyms when I’m traveling and working out in one is focusing too much time on minor muscle groups (biceps, calves, etc.) instead of major muscle groups (back, quads, hamstrings). People think the path to sculpted arms lies in things like tricep extensions, but really what they need to do is squat and deadlift more while eating more vegetables and balanced meals. This in turn will help you burn more fat, which will reveal the strong arms you’ve been building from your rowing and pressing. What you’re after if you’re trying to lose body fat is working big muscles every time you work out–and your glutes are among the biggest in your body. So having a big, strong butt will actually help you burn fat while you’re not working out.

The aesthetic case

The old sexist punchlines centering on a woman asking her husband if “these jeans make my butt look big” ought to be dead if they aren’t already. The cultural tides have shifted–in a good way, in my estimation–away from the drive to be skinny and toward the pursuit of a strong, curvy body. Men and women alike seem to enjoy looking at “squat butts” more than ever. Fitness is my life, but I’m not naive enough to think that people aren’t working out in part to catch other people’s eyes. Filling out those yoga pants, jeans, slacks, or shorts with a big ole squat butt will definitely get you noticed.

Resources

Now that I’ve convinced you that you need a bigger butt, it’s time to put thought into action. How do you build a strong, big butt?

To answer that question, you really should start by reading and watching as much Bret Contreras content as you can. Dude has built a career out of building butts (and publishing serious research in fitness). Start here for his myriad resources on butt building.

I would also check out what TNation has done on building strong glutes. Within just the past few days TNation editor Dani Shugart wrote an entire piece on the how’s and why’s of building strong glutes. That article, “The Flat Butt Fix,” is here.

April 5, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

Request for Proposals Open To:  Regional Artistsbuildartin
Commission Amount:  $50,000
Opened:  Monday, April 4 , 2016
Entry Deadline:  This commission has been filled.

Project Summary:
Artists are invited to propose a public artwork to be placed in Cooper Park in the City of Dayton, Ohio. This privately funded, city-owned artwork is intended to communicate the value of public service. The call for entries and project implementation are managed by  Build Art In, LLC.

Artistic Goals of the Project:
This artwork should reflect the distinctive orientation toward public service. It is important that the viewer is able to discern the subject. A directly narrative and representational iteration is not required but would be acceptable. Proposals for community-oriented and collaborative projects are welcome.

Practical Considerations:
The selected potential site(s) for artwork wil be located outdoors in a public urban park with mature trees, sidewalks and new play equipment. The centerpiece of the park is a bronze statue of William McKinley, erected in 1910. The new sculpture should be created in relationship to these other elements and must be durable and easily maintained, on a substantial, professionally poured foundation that extends at least 12 inches beyond any part of the sculpture. It cannot be sited directly under a tree or in a way that damages tree roots. If designed to be interactive/accessible, meeting ADA requirements may be required.

12898322_10154049282068767_816667416894715772_oDo you ride the bike trails out towards Yellow Springs?  Perhaps this news will give you some inspiration to do so.  Every Wednesday when you ride out to Young’s Jersey Dairy and let them know you’re there for Wheel in Wednesday you can  get a free extra dip of Young’s Homemade Ice Cream on any ice cream purchase at The Dairy Store or a free mini-dessert at The Golden Jersey Inn with the purchase of your meal.

Or you can use their parking lot to drive out to Yellow Springs with your bike on car rack, unload your bike and make Young’s your starting point.  One of the nation’s premier bike trails less than a mile from their location and think about wahat a reward a nice homemade ice cream cone would be at the end of your ride.2015-Bike-Ride-Logo

It’s also a great way to train for the Young’s Ice Cream Charity Bike Ride July 16 & 17.   The ride starts and ends at Young’s, with 28 mile, 56 mile, 83 mile, and 100 mile options which head up to Ada, Ohio. Two-day participants stay overnight in great accommodations at Ohio Northern University. Riders of all ages and abilities raise money for charity and have a good time riding the well-marked routes. Food and ice cream is provided to all volunteers and riders. Each charity provides volunteers to staff the rest stops along the route.

Prevent UpDayton Summit FOMO – Register now!

April 5, 2016 By Guest Contributor

“FOMO – Anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website” – OxfordDictionaries.com

Registration
To avoid UpDayton Summit FOMO, we’d like to invite you to register as soon as possible for this year’s UpDayton Summit! You’ll find the registration form here.

SummitBIGGroup-1030x275

What is the UpDayton Summit?
In its eighth year, the UpDayton Summit will return to the Dayton Art Institute on Thursday, April 28th at 5:30pm.  At the Summit you’ll vote to decide which three creative young leaders will receive $1,000 budgets and the support of UpDayton volunteers to bring their ideas to action in the coming year. Past projects have included murals that transform urban places, the installation of more than 70 new bike racks in Dayton business districts, an ongoing community positivity campaign asserting that “Dayton Inspires,” and more!

What’s different about this year’s Summit?
If you’ve been to past UpDayton Summits, you’re in for some surprises!

New time – We’ve moved the event from a Friday afternoon to a Thursday evening. We received feedback that many young professionals had a hard time getting out of work without using their vacation time.

New format – In past years there were typically three simultaneous breakout sessions where groups would assess a particular category of ideas and discuss the pros and cons of each. Then each breakout would choose a winner from their group. This year, only 10 ideas will be pitched to the entire Summit audience. Each audience member will receive a ballot and select their three favorite project ideas. The top three vote recipients will then receive the usual $1,000 budgets and support of UpDayton volunteers. Even for the project ideas that aren’t selected, the event serves as a powerful launchpad for those leaders to move forward with the idea on their own.

New vibe – Now that we’re competing with your Thursday evening social plans, we knew we had to change our offering a little. There will be food, a cash bar, time to mingle, and some in-your-face performances from local artists!

See you there!
