TESLA Brings “Shock Tour” to Rose Music Center
Legendary rock band TESLA is hitting the road in 2019 in support of their new album, SHOCK, out now on CD, vinyl, digital download and across streaming platforms. TheSHOCK Tour will make a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Tuesday, August 6th. Produced and co-written by Phil Collen (Def Leppard), SHOCK features 12 new songs including the electrifying first single, “Shock.” Download/steam HERE.
It’s been said that lightning never strikes the same place twice. However, it does in the case of TESLA the band.
Over the course of their thirty plus year career, the critically acclaimed iconic Sacramento melodic hard rock quintet—Frank Hannon [guitar], Brian Wheat [bass], Jeff Keith [lead vocals], Troy Luccketta [drums], and Dave Rude [guitar]— have sold more than 25 million albums and performed to sold out crowds across the world. Since the 2016 release of their album, Mechanical Resonance Live! which features the track “Save That Goodness” produced by Phil Collen of Def Leppard, TESLA has been touring nonstop. They have shared stages with STYX, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, REO Speedwagon and have performed headline shows the past 3 years consistently. In order to fully celebrate their 30+ year history, TESLA not only performs their radio hits, but also includes a stripped-down acoustic set of 5 Man Acoustic Jam – the bands biggest selling album that spawned the unplugged trend of the 1990s – songs from their Forevermore and Psychotic Supperalbums, and much more.
Lead vocalist Jeff Keith’s voice is still as raspy and soulful as it was in the beginning and the band prides themselves in performing live without the aid of prerecorded backing tracks.

“This is a band we started in Frank’s garage when I was 18, and Frank was 15,” Brian leaves off. “I’m proud we’re still standing this many years later. It’s a pretty cool place to be. I’d love for people to think, ‘That band has managed to stay in the game for 30 plus years, and they’re still playing great shows and putting out quality music.’ Now, just turn the music up when you listen to it. Dorothy Height’s Hats- An Iconic Activists Collection
The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) will present the first of the museum’s centennial Focus Exhibitions, Dorothy Height’s Hats, on view from March 23 through June 23. The DAI is proud to present this exhibition, with all hats on loan from the Dorothy I. Height Education Foundation.
Dorothy Height’s Hats features hats worn by Dr. Dorothy Irene Height (1912–2010), an author and icon of civil rights who was known for her leadership, courage, determination, and hats! This exhibition will explore the life of Dr. Height by bringing together 43 of her favorite and most iconic hats.
“It is an honor to present these beautiful hats that belonged to Dr. Height, someone who was such an important figure in the fight for equal rights for all,” states Jerry N. Smith, DAI Chief Curator. “The hats, many made by top designers, are like sculptures in fabric and can be enjoyed as such. However, knowing who wore them makes each that much more significant.”
Dr. Height was an activist in the struggles for equality and was given the name “Godmother of the Civil Rights Movement” by President Barack Obama. Hats, often called “crowns” by the African-American community, became a symbol of Dr. Height’s personality. She helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Dr. Height also served as the president of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years and had notable involvement with national organizations such as the YWCA and the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
She has been recognized by many groups and world leaders, and received 36 honorary doctorate degrees, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004). She was memorialized on the 40th U.S. Forever Postage Stamp in the Black Heritage series, in 2017.

LunaFest- Short Films By Women
This is our 10th year sponsoring LUNAFEST, the annual women’s film festival We are fortunate this year to also have Tragic Refuge,a short film about incarcerated victims of domestic violence. This insightful film was shot in Dayton and Marysville Ohio and produced by Chinonye Chukwa, who recently made history at Sundance Film Festival as the first black woman to win their top U.S. Grand Jury Prize in the category of Dramatic film. Chukwa was featured at a previous LUNAFEST event at the Neon when she presented short films from incarcerated women that she mentored at the Dayton Correctional Institute through Pens to Pictures. A short Q&A with co-producer Nancy Grigsby will follow. Proceeds will benefit the Ohio Domestic Violence Network and Chicken & Egg Pictures, a nonprofit that supports women nonfiction filmmakers whose innovative storytelling catalyzes social change.

Artist of the Week: Josh Merritt
ARTIST OF THE WEEK Josh Merritt of JLM Glass Studio. I asked Josh how he became a glass blower.
“I started out as an apprentice to one of Ohio’s great glass artists – John Michael Kahle. I lived close enough to walk to his studio. I did all kinds of work for him and in return he taught me about his art. Then I went to Ohio State. They have a good glass blowing program that really expanded my horizons. A few months ago I moved back to Dayton and set up this studio where I give lessons and teach some classes.”
“Although I’m giving classes, I still feel like a student myself. There’s so much to learn. Last summer I was able to visit Murano, Italy – a place where people have been blowing glass for 700 years. Murano is an island near Venice that people call the Glass Island. The story I heard was that the glass blowers of Venice were sent to the Island of Murano in the 13th century because glass factories sometimes caught fire.”

Meaty in Miamisburg: Rivertown Chili

We have found our first 2019 hidden food gem, Rivertown Chili in Miamisburg. This restaurant is a true family run organization, with a dad and his 2 sons on staff, and recipes passed down from a 3rd generation.
Owner Brian Walusis may sound familiar. His brother Eric id married to Chef Maria and they runWatermark Restaurant nearby. He has another family member who owns the critically acclaimed chocolate shop in Oakwood called Madame Delluc Artisan Chocolatier. But Brian’s bread and butter is a chili place, that also specializes in comfort breakfast foods.

— Located at 105 S. Second Street, parking is available in the front and the back of the establishment. It can be slightly tricky if crowded.

1) JOHN’S DAYTON STYLE CHILI-
This is the kind of chili that we are used to in Dayton, Ohio. It has beans, meat, and some tomato influence. When they serve it get the option of adding onions, cheese and sour cream. This was the best thing we have had on their menu to date. The chili is so reminiscent of what we grew up with our mom and grandmothers making that it brought a tear to our eye. The recipe is passed down from John Walusis and is a shout out to the city’s namesake, Jonathan Dayton, a captain in the American Revolutionary War who signed the U.S. Constitution.

2) CLASHMORE MIKE’S CHILI-
This is a Texas style chili which has no beans, and has slices of steak like beef as the meat. More reddish in color, this chili has a bit more of a spicy kick than the other chilis served. We came across this chili at the AMBUCS chili contest in 2017. Named after the original mascot of Notre Dame College (Clashmore Mike), Owner Brian has fulfilled a life long dream of using that name in his restaurant.
3) KOKO’s FAVORITE VEGAN CHILI-
This is a fantastic choice, even meat lovers like. You don’t miss any of the flavor, and this vegetarian option is as delicious as any chili as you will have. We were very surprised how much we loved it and suggest you try it sometime for a change. It has a nice little kick.
Cannoli Stuffed French Toast
— KIM’S STREET TACO’S:
Possibly the best soft taco we have had in years. This is a special, but lately they have been offering it every day. It is a chili soft taco with your choice of chili. A raw jalapeno slice and onions and tomatoes round out the tacos. Please try one of these.
—CANNOLI STUFFED FRENCH TOAST:
This sinful entree is often available during normal business hours. Cannoli filling is stuffed between 2 warm pieces of French Toast. The powdered sugar topping is the finishing touch. Drizzle the maple syrup and you are in heaven. Definitely a creamy must eat, and our favorite breakfast offering on the menu.
Chili Cheese Coney with Everything
— THE CHILI CHEESE CONEY:
Ok they have 2 versions, one with a brat sausage, or one with a weiner. We prefer the hot dog version. You get your choice of chili on a bun with onions and cheese. It is topped with a raw jalapeno slice that gets us every time with the heat. It’s a little messy, but sooooo worth it for the taste. We love this little chili parlor !!
There are other good menu items, from the BLT to the Pancakes and Bacon, but the above items are our MUST EATS.. the best of the best …

Amos Lee and Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers Bring Summer Tour to The Rose
Amos Lee has announced a new string of summer tour dates with Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, extending an already busy stretch this spring. The newly announced shows will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Tuesday, July 16th.
Amos Lee’s new album My New Moon is out now on Dualtone and has received some of the highest praise of his career, with Billboard calling it “the most personal and deeply felt of his seven studio albums.” The record debuted at #1 on their Rock and Americana/Folk charts and #2 on the Independent Album chart, with raves elsewhere from Salon (“music to help listeners heal”), NPR Music (“soulful voice and empathetic lyrics”), Rolling Stone (“haunting folk songwriting”) and beyond.

Amos just kicked off his first run of 2019 shows over the weekend, but his tour is already getting buzz with the Philly Inquirer naming his hometown stop one of the “biggest concerts coming to Philadelphia” this year. The Indianapolis Star-Tribune and New Orleans Magazine also highlighted him as a must-see act this year. In their review of his recent performance at The Ryman, Nashville Noise says “he’s sure to make your night a religious experience.”
Bruce Hornsby, the creatively insatiable pianist and singer-songwriter, always has succeeded on his exceptional gifts, his training, and his work ethic. He became a global name in music by reimagining American roots forms as songs that moved with the atmospheric grace of jazz. “The Way It Is” defined sonic joy on the radio, however as a hit record it also evidenced a thrilling re-structuring, and during the years afterward Hornsby, in staggeringly diverse ways, has kept going.
He has returned to traditional American roots forms, collaborating with Ricky Skaggs. He has played with the Grateful Dead. He has fused the plunk and dazzle of twentieth-century modernist classical composition to singer-songwriter emotional inquiries. He has scored films. He has performed with symphony orchestras. If the sound of an arrogant air-conditioner or a stretch of rude playing caught his ear, he has entered the hallowed doors of the conservatories of punk. So, when Hornsby describes Absolute Zero, his new album, as “a compendium of what I like and moves me,” don’t expect perhaps a thing or two new. Prepare for a multi- faceted ride.
There is precedent for musical artists moving from the mainstream of popular music to… somewhere else. This stripe of music evolution over time clearly has another member to add to its small and restless club. It’s Bruce Hornsby, a great re-structuralist from the beginning and onward. Absolute Zero constitutes absolute 2019 proof. And all you need to hear it is a set of open ears.

Women of Woodland: Miss America Marion Bergeron
A life-long public speaker and supporter of the Miss America Pageant, Marion Bergeron still holds the crown as the youngest Miss America in history, winning at the age of 15 – 1/2. Miss Bergeron entered the contest as the winner of a local pageant as a way to get a stash of movie theater tickets for her and her sister. She didn’t know that she would actually win and it wasn’t so easy being such a young winner. She received many prizes including a car in which she couldn’t drive and a screen test from RKO Pictures which they rescinded due to her age. The crown that had been placed on her head was stolen from her room at the Ritz Carlton the very same night she earned it.
Marion was a typical teenager from a typical family. Born and raised in West Haven, Connecticut, she attended a Catholic high school. Her father was a patrol man with the town police and her mother stayed home and took care of the house and kids and accompanied young Marion to the pageant as her chaperone.
While Marion was blessed with blonde bombshell looks, she was quite an accomplished singer by the age of twelve and after winning the title of Miss America, she went on to perform professionally with the “Miss America Orchestra” as well as famous musicians such as Ozzie Nelson, Guy Lombardo and Rudy Vallee who she once labelled “an octopus.”As an active representative of the Miss America pageant, Marion traveled with other winners raising money for the Boys and Girls Club of America. When she was home in Dayton, she volunteered for Kettering Medical Center, Hospice and other local civic organizations including serving as PTO president and a Girl Scout Leader.
Marion married Donald Ruhlman with whom she had three children. She became a widow in 1972. She remarried and soon found herself widowed again. In 1987, she married for a third time to Mr. Fred Setzer who made her a three-time widow in March of 2002. Marion died just seven months later in October of 2002. She had been known as the youngest winning Miss America and the oldest living Miss America.
Marion Bergeron was was born on May 3, 1918 in West Haven, Connecticut and died on October 22, 2002 in Dayton, Ohio at the age of 84 from complications of leukemia. She is located in Section 123 Lot 11.
Woodland Cemetery, founded in 1841, is one of the nation’s oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton, Ohio. Visit the cemetery and arboretum and take one of the many tours Woodland offers. Most of Dayton’s aviation heroes, inventors and business barons are buried at Woodland.

The first day of spring has become synonymous with Dairy Queen’s annual “Free Cone Day!” All day on Wednesday March 20, 2019, participating locations all customers can get a free small vanilla soft-serve cone.
“We love that our tradition of Free Cone Day has become synonymous with return of warmer weather and bringing people together,” said Maria Hokanson, executive vice president of ADQ, in a press release. “We know the start of soft-serve season brings joy to our fans, and we can’t wait to help spread smiles.”
Following Free Cone Day, DQ is offering a small regular or dipped soft serve cone for 50 cents, available for redemption only with the DQ mobile app, March 21-31 at participating DQ and DQ Grill & Chill locations. This offer includes the NEW DQ orange, creamy and crunchy dreamsicle dip, or try the DQ classic chocolate dip.
The first day of spring also is a traditional freebie day at Rita’s Italian Ice.
It’s the Pennsylvania-based company’s 27th annual first day of spring giveaway, which will take place during regular hours Wednesday. Most stores are open noon to 9 p.m.

Arrive Safe Program – St Patrick’s Day Edition
Arrive Safe will be offering free cab rides for Montgomery County residents this St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. These free cab rides will begin at 5pm on Friday, March 15th and run through 6am on Monday, March 18th.
Prosecuting Attorney Matt Heck, Jr says, “This St. Patrick’s Day weekend, it’s simple to make a responsible choice-have a designated, sober driver or call Arrive Safe at 449-9999 and request a free ride home. We will pay the cab fare up to $50. Remember, the life you save may be your own.”
Since Heck started Arrive Safe in December of 2007 there have been over 7200 free cab rides given to Montgomery County Residents.
Nationally, during St. Patrick’s Day, nearly 69% of fatal traffic crashes involve impaired drivers, and of those, 75% involved a driver whose blood-alcohol content was two times or more over the legal limit. Shockingly, over one-third of pedestrians who were killed in traffic crashes had a blood- alcohol content of .08% or more.
