Tornado Personal Effects Reunion Page Launches

June 9, 2019 By LIbby Ballengee

One of the most painful things about losing your home and belongings in a disaster, whether it be fire, flood or wind, is the loss of photos, personal momentos and childhood treasures. It’s the loss of those precious and irreplaceable items that cuts a particularly painful wound.

After the recent Dayton tornadoes, my friend and fellow Brookville High School alumni Ryan Wissinger, reached out from his current residence in Boise, Idaho. He was struck by stories he was hearing from in Brookville, where friends were finding family photos in fields miles away. Wanting to help in some way, but being hundreds of miles away, Ryan had an idea.

He started a Tornado Personal Effects Reunion Page on Facebook. Here people can post items that were found during clean ups or that blew onto other people’s property. People in search of treasured items can post what they are looking for as well. In the couple weeks since this page was established, local folks have posted images of historic photos, identification, stuffed animals, quilts, a wedding dress – and even a couple pets!

Our best wishes are with everyone who was effected by these devastating storms. Ryan and I hope that reconnecting people with their lost treasures will be a small reconciliation on the road to recovery.

The way this page is most effective is by joining and sharing, so please do so today: https://www.facebook.com/groups/334058030599309/

’20th Century Blues’ Review – Young at Heart Players – Time to Reminisce

June 9, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

In Susan Miller’s relatable 2016 dramedy 20th Century Blues, pleasantly presented in its regional premiere by Young at Heart Players at Actor’s Theatre of Fairborn, four close-knit baby boomers look back on 40 years of friendship with humor and poignancy while holding steadfast to the future with hope and resilience.

(left to right) Pam McGinnis (Sil), Gail Andrews Turner (Mac), Heather Martin (Danny), and Jackie Pfeifer (Gabby) lead the cast of Young at Heart Players’ regional premiere of Susan Miller’s 2016 dramedy “20th Century Blues” at Actor’s Theatre of Fairborn. (Contributed photo)

Gathering once a year for a ritual photo shoot, Danny (Heather Martin), Sil (Pam McGinnis), Mac (Gail Andrews Turner), and Gabby (Jackie Pfeifer) are eager to reunite, but Danny’s desire to turn their private tradition into a public exhibition for New York’s Museum of Modern Art stirs skepticism and debate. Motives are questioned, but ultimately a decision is made that pleases everyone while acknowledging the sheer fact that aging should be celebrated not hidden.

In the feminine vein of The Dixie Swim Club, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and Steel Magnolias among others, Miller’s one-act work leans heavily on comical characterization and colorful chit-chat, which in this case grows inadvertently mundane due to the lack of forward action. Mere discussion, even when interrupted by a few plates of French Toast, isn’t plot. There’s also an awkward Motown moment evoking The Big Chill which feels forced. Still, there are an assortment of relevant, vital themes driving the play’s intentions such as ageism, identity, loss, financial stability, technological advances, and the emotional weight of being a caregiver.

Despite the script’s shortcomings, co-directors Annie and Fran Pesch assemble and smoothly guide a committed and compatible cast. Martin, although too young, is a credible ringleader proving why Danny has succeeded throughout the decades as the warm, feisty, funny, and free-spirited glue holding this foursome together even as her mother Bess (Gayle Smith, heartbreaking) battles dementia. McGinnis, a fine fit as outspoken Sil, scores many laughs, especially considering Sil’s fixation on having a facelift (“It’s not about being younger but refreshed!). Turner, benefitting from some of the strongest dialogue, finds engaging introspectiveness in the complex Mac, proud to stand in her truth as a gay black female. Pfeifer, performing in only her second play, particularly draws the audience in when Gabby quietly reflects on her delicate relationship with her transgendered granddaughter. Jamison Meyer tenderly completes the cast as Danny’s caring, thoughtful son Simon.
20th Century Blues falls short of being a truly compelling journey, but its depiction of sisterhood surviving the test of time is undeniably heartfelt.

20th Century Blues concludes today at 2 p.m. at Actor’s Theatre of Fairborn, 23 E. Main St. The play is performed in 100 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Cash or check only. There is open seating. Call (937) 654-0400 to make a reservation. For more information, visit youngatheartplayers.com. Patrons are advised the show contains strong language and adult situations.

Street Names of Dayton: Artz Lane

June 8, 2019 By Angie Hoschouer Leave a Comment

Peter Artz 1792 – 1873

The Artz family made their way from Maryland with Peter Artz arriving in Ohio on horseback. Peter settled on a farm near Fairfield, Ohio but soon moved to Dayton where for years he operated a wholesale grocery business. Peter Artz died in 1873 at the age of 81. He rests peacefully at Woodland Cemetery with his wife Elizabeth who died in 1875 at the age of 77.

Joseph S. Artz 1824 – 1899

Joseph S. Artz was born on a farm in Greene County, Ohio in 1824 and grew up working on the family farm. He made his way to Germantown, Ohio and began working in the lumber and undertaking business. On account of deafness, he was rejected when he offered his services to fight in the Civil War. In 1866, he moved from Germantown to Dayton where he established a lumber business which he conducted for about eleven years. In 1877, he bought out the furniture firm of Chadwick & Beaver and continued in that line of business for a number of years until his sons took over the business. Joseph was married in Germantown to Miss Elizabeth Negley, a daughter of Captain W.H.H. Negley and together they had eight children.  Elizabeth Artz died on February 11, 1882 at the age of 56 and Joseph died on December 26, 1899 at the age of 75. Both are resting peacefully together in Section 103 Lot 2016 at Woodland Cemetery.

William Negley Artz 1862 – 1934

William N. Artz  had a prosperous business as a furniture dealer in Dayton. He was born in Germantown, Ohio in 1862. He was seven years old when his parents moved to Dayton and this is where he remained. William stayed in school until the age of fifteen then left to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in the Dayton yards. He spent five years with the railroad rising to the position of conductor and then moved on to the Dayton & Ironton Railroad and served that line as conductor for a year. Soon after, he left the railroad and joined his father in the furniture business at Artz & Ozias. William began delivering furniture for them at a salary of seven dollars per week. He had been receiving one hundred and twenty dollars per month with the railroad but working for the railroad was hard work and often dangerous and he wanted to learn his father’s trade and business. He also knew that  the opportunity for advancement always came to the man who was willing to work for it. He earned the position of shipping clerk, then salesman and eventually became one of the three owners of the store known as Artz Brothers.

Artz Furniture Store at 110 – 112 N. Main St.

In 1904, William purchased the interest of his brother and ran the store under his own name. His store was well stocked with a variety of goods of varying prices in order to meet the demand of his customers. He was well respected for his business practices and enjoyed much success in his new vocation. William married Miss Mary Anna Baile on April 6, 1882. William died on April 1, 1934 and Mary Anna died on June 28, 1932. They are both resting peacefully together in Section 34 Lot 1306 at Woodland Cemetery.

Artz Lane in Downtown Dayton

The W. N. Artz Furniture Store was located at 110 and 112 North Main Street in the heart of downtown Dayton. Harman and Co. Currently, 110 North Main Street is the current site of Premiere Health headquarters.

Dayton At Work And Play: St. Helen Spring Festival

June 7, 2019 By Bill Franz

I stopped in as volunteers were setting up for the annual St. Helen Spring Festival 2019 (5100 Burkhardt Road). The event starts tonight at 6:30 pm and ends Sunday at 9 pm.

I read that some questioned the decision to move ahead with the festival this year. I love the way the parish stated their decision to proceed.

“We are a church of joy and of hope. So many in our area, especially the more impoverished among us, are unable to travel on vacations during the summer. Activities like the St. Helen Festival are a way for them to relax, have fun, make memories. This year ESPECIALLY, we believe, that is very necessary!”

I talked with the event chairman who told me that his parish had already given quite a bit to tornado relief efforts and was giving 10% of the proceeds from this event. He said they have planned a great festival this year with 22 entertainment acts, great foods like the famous St Helens cabbage rolls and 17 different craft beers.

Rides, games of chance, food galore, a wide selection of craft beers, margaritas and wine – plus 20+ musical acts on 2 stages.

6:30PM – midnight on FR 6/7/19  Spungeworthy will play from 7 -1pm
1:00PM – midnight on SA 6/8/19 The Driving Force Band (classic rock) plays from 3:30 to 5pm.
1:00PM – 9:00PM on SU 6/9/19  Ithika plays Sunday

To learn more, volunteers can stop in at the Volunteer Resource Center (Building 20) at Sinclair. Off Edwin C Moses and Fifth  or call: 937-512-570

Dayton at Work and Play

June 6, 2019 By Bill Franz

Here’s a Dayton neighborhood success story.

Driving down Burkhardt Avenue just before sunset I came across this soccer game. Everyone from grandparents to young children were playing.

This soccer field was once part of the city’s Burkhardt Community Center, which was shut down in 2009. When the center became vacant, neighbors say it was overrun with drug dealers and crime, and this field was filled with tall weeds. The city considered demolishing the building.

Audrey Starnes, a woman born and raised in this neighborhood, saved the day. She rented the community center from the city and turned it into a daycare facility for the neighborhood children. She also maintains this field so that kids of all ages can play there. Stepping Stones Learning Center, is located at 215 Burkhardt Avenue in Dayton.

This field will be the site of the Burkhardt Festival on August 10. I can’t wait to photograph the contestants in the Strongman Competition.
