Christopher’s Announces Soft Opening

September 29, 2022 By Dayton937

Christopher’s recently purchased the old Pizza Hut building at 4211 Linden Avenue, on the corner of Linden and Woodman and not too far away from their previous location. Owners Dave & Erika Krites say their team has been working hard to make the space feel like their own – new kitchen that was approved by the health department, an updated dining room, and a fresh new look on the outside (still a work in progress).
They will begin Christopher’s Restaurant-style service with pared down menus of Christopher’s favorites and some new creations from the chef. Following the soft-opening dates, they will share our operating hours for this ongoing breakfast and dinner service.
They plan to accept reservations for groups of 2+, in addition to walk-ins which will always be welcome. Keep in mind the dining space is smaller than their previous location.
The Catering House by Christopher’s SOFT OPENING NEXT WEEK:
Monday, 10/3 at 6:30pm – Christopher’s Home Cooked Classics Night
Thursday, 10/6 at 6:30pm – Prime Rib and Chef’s Features Night
Sunday, 10/9 at 10:30am & 12:30am – Sunday Brunch (Two Seatings)
They are planning the soft opening to be a smaller, trial-run before beginning normal weekly service. They are limiting service to the first 20-25 reservations we receive; you can direct message them on Facebook to reserve your spot. Because they know things won’t be perfect as they get used to the new place, they are offering *15% OFF* all entree prices as a “thank you” for your patience and your feedback.

Freddy’s Encourages Guest to Round Up For First Responders

September 29, 2022 By Dayton937

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is partnering with  Back The Heroes Rumble’s on their Operation Open Arms  program in a round up campaign where patrons can round up their total and donate the difference this October. These funds 100% benefit the lives of first responders by providing lifesaving equipment to our law enforcement and firefighters across Ohio, Indiana & Kentucky.

Freddy’s goal is to ensure all officers and firefighters have resources such as emergency trauma kits, high grade particulate protective hoods and more to aid in their efforts while they serve and protect our communities. It is their hope that providing these resources will ensure our first responders make it home to their families safely each night. You can participate in the round up campaign anytime you visit Freddy’s (dine in or drive thru) between October 1st and 31st.

“We have been blessed by so many individual supporters as well as support from our many corporate partners and to now be joining forces with Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. We would not be able to save the lives of so many heroes without their support. As a one hundred percent volunteer organization like ours, all donations make a direct impact,” said Executive Director, Carl Whalen.

As of today, Freddy’s has provided critical resources and lifesaving equipment to 22 police/fire departments to the tune of nearly $34,000 since Operation Open Arms program began. “There are many officers under attack these days, more than ever before. We must, as a community, do everything in our power to support them so we are able to ensure the safety of our communities. Without the help of our donors and sponsors, we would not be able to help save the lives of those who answer the call so selflessly every day,” says Jason Marsh, the program director.

September 28, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

As the provider of Montgomery County’s 24/7 domestic violence hotline, Artemis Center saw a 47.7%* increase in calls from 2020 to 2021. Nationally, the increase was a little over 12%* and in Ohio, the increase was 29%*. With this significant increase in calls, and an overall 30%* increase in the total number of clients served in the same time frame, Artemis is seeking support now more than ever.

The 24/7 Domestic violence hotline is the hub of all of Artemis Center’s services. Through this hotline, Artemis provides safety planning and emergency assistance which includes safe housing, transportation, access to pantry services, and referrals to other community partners. Artemis Center provided services to over 4,100* people in 2021 and answered over 6,600* hotline calls.

In October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Artemis Center will be sharing information with the Dayton community through events, campaigns, and stories.

The signature fundraiser for Awareness Month is the Breaking the CycleFundraising Breakfast, held on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 8:00-9:00 am at Sinclair’s Conference Center.

The Breaking the Cycle Virtual 5k is held during the entire month of October. The goal is to raise $100,000 in support of survivors in the Miami Valley. Support for Artemis Center will help increase the number of trained advocates to answer the 24/7 hotline and sustain other programs and services needed in the Dayton community.

With such an increase in services, it is vital that we continue to make our community aware of the resources that ArtemisCenter provides free to all that need them!

Local Arts Leader Announces Retirement from Dance Company

September 27, 2022 By Dayton937

Ro Nita Hawes-Saunders, CEO of the internationally acclaimed Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC), announced her intention to terminate her tenure, effective December 31, 2022.  Ro Nita concludes an eighteen-year career at DCDC.

After being selected to provide leadership and stewardship of the company because of her knowledge and experience as a civic-minded, community-centered entrepreneur, Ro Nita was asked in 2005 by the DCDC Board of Directors to address issues that threatened the viability and sustainability of the company including the economic recession and lack of visibility of the company.

According to Ro Nita, “organizational change and reform, fiscal discipline, and strategic planning and networking became the requirements of the situation then, and these strategies continued to be useful and helpful in enabling the company to navigate the more recent challenge represented by the COVID pandemic and its aftermath.”  Ro Nita credits the creativity and resilience of the DCDC family, including the tireless donors, outstanding staff, exquisite dancers and dedicated Board of Directors for the company’s recovery and renewal. The company has evolved from an excellent dance company into a performing arts institution.

DCDC Board Chair, Jacqueline Gamblin and CEO of JYG Innovations said “I have admired Ro Nita’s leadership and unwavering commitment to continuing the DCDC legacy of artistic excellence and education. We appreciate her contributions and are extremely grateful for her cultivation of several key partnerships, sponsors and individual donors which are the lifeline of a non-profit. Her service has left a lasting impact and solid foundation for DCDC’s continued stability, success and growth.

Ro Nita believes that DCDC is a community trust and cultural treasure, whose reason for being is to recreate and celebrate the African American heritage and experience.  Through its artistic and educational initiatives, the company reaches annually approximately 40,000 people, 25,000 of whom are youth.  An example of Ro Nita’s belief that art may be used to heal, inform, and connect our global community was experienced in the presentation of DCDC’s Young, Gifted and Black: A Transformative Experience, which brought performances of new work and residency activities by choreographers of color to students and the community of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Ro Nita has stated that she shares “Jeraldyne Blunden’s commitment to education, social change and cultural transformation.” She initiated new strategic educational partnerships with area Universities including the University of Dayton, Central State University and Wright State University. These partnerships resulted in initiatives that have benefited area high school and college students and the program growth of the dance company.

During Ro Nita’s tenure, DCDC has received a number of distinguished awards, including the contemporary dance world’s highest honor (New York Dance and Performance Award aka “The Bessie”) in 2016.  DCDC also received the 2016 Workplace Diversity Award from the Dayton branch of the National Conference for Community and Justice.  In May of 2018, DCDC received the prestigious Ohio Arts Council top artistic award, the Irma Lazarus Award.  DCDC has also toured internationally–Chile, China, France, Poland, and in 2018 the U.S. State Department invited DCDC to tour Kazakhstan and Russia.

Ro Nita leaves DCDC after having created a legacy of leadership and service of her own, which includes her selection by the Dayton Business Journal in 2019 and in 2021, as one of the fifty most influential women in our area and her being honored in 2020 with the inaugural DBJ Jane Haley Award for determination, perseverance, and achievement.  Ro Nita was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the University of Dayton in May of 2019 for her many contributions to the vitality and quality of the community, her continuing commitment to education, and her advocacy for female and minority business ownership.

Ro Nita’s belief in the vision and mission of the company—her respect for the company’s history and the founder’s legacy, her advocacy for individual change and organizational transformation, her faith and confidence in the potential and destiny of the company and the talented and dancers will remain hallmarks of DCDC.

The board of directors, will begin the daunting task of filling her position, in order for DCDC to continue its excellence that it represents in the arts world-wide.  Vice chair of DCDC’s board and University of Dayton provost Dr. Paul Benson said, “Ro Nita has been an outstanding leader for DCDC in absolutely every dimension of her responsibilities. Her agile leadership and ambitious strategic vision for DCDC were powerful catalysts for developing the close working partnership that UD has had with DCDC for the past 12 years.” Benson noted that the Board will establish a search committee and launch a search soon for Ro Nita’s successor. “DCDC’s continued artistic excellence, rich grounding in African-American culture and artistic expression, and dramatically expanded national and regional support should make this a highly desirable leadership role.”

Local Actor To Appear on Chicago PD TV Show

September 27, 2022 By Dayton937

Miami Valley actor scOtt summitt represents the Gem City on national television when he co-stars on the primetime TV crime show CHICAGO PD, airing at 10pm, Wednesday, September 28 on NBC.

“It’s so exciting to have an opportunity like this,” summitt says. “The cast and crew were so professional, just an incredible team. It’s truly an honor to work on a TV show of this calibre.”

The Dayton native plays a character named “Eric Sadler” who becomes involved in high stakes action that sets up the episode’s plot line. “He’s in the wrong place at the wrong time,” summitt explains. “But he helps launch an exciting story line on the show with a bang!”

Devin Bundrent, one of summitt’s agents who represents him in the region at Cincinnati- based Heyman Talent Agency, celebrates his client’s casting on the popular crime show.

“We are overjoyed when one of our clients books any role,” Bundrent says, “but a role on a primetime network television show is especially sweet when it’s someone like scOtt who feels like family.”

Over the years, the hardworking actor has appeared in standout co-star and guest star roles on Comedy Central, UPTV Network, feature films and web series. With his role on CHICAGO PD, summitt can now add primetime TV on his acting resume.

“I couldn’t be happier to tune in and watch scOtt on Chicago PD!”

Bundrent says. “He has worked diligently and made the most of every opportunity — and there have been many — we have thrown at him!”

summitt continues to practice his craft as a professional actor and build his career role by role, but he always comes back to his hometown roots in the Gem City.

scOtt took the time to answer some questions for us:

What made you return to Dayton from LA? “I’d lived there for nearly 4 years, and I’d gotten to a point where I was burned out from the hustle. LA is definitely a different world, and if you’re working to make it in the industry, it can really do a whammy on your self confidence. So many creative folks get lost out there or we lose them to drugs, alcohol, or suicide. Just so sad. I just wanted to get back to where I came from and get centered & grounded again, regroup and get a dose of reality.”

Is getting great roles while living in Dayton hard? “I think the electronic age we live in now has definitely leveled the playing field, geographically speaking. I was an early adopter of self-tape auditions. I’ve been able to audition from my bedroom and get cast in projects shooting all over the region. Actors from all over the world are auditioning for roles, so in that sense, being tech-savvy is a good skill that every actor should master.

But keep in mind, most of the leads are already cast in LA and NY, even when a big film may be shooting in Ohio, for example, the producers may cast supporting roles and day players locally, so there are lots of opportunities to audition for big projects in our region.
And there are sooo many independent filmmakers in our region, making great indie shorts and features where you can audition to play great roles in interesting stories. Film and content is always being created, so there are a lot of opportunities to get yourself in front of the camera as an actor.”
Share some advice for folks wanting to become be tv actors? “First, be clear on WHY you want to be an actor. If it’s something you just want to do for fun, there are lots of community theatre & student film opportunities open to you. But if you aim to work professionally, being clear on why you want to pursue an acting career is the first big step. You have to really love what you do and be prepared to take classes, train and learn your craft.
When I was starting out in Dayton, I had to create my own opportunities. It was a great place to live cheaply and start creating. I did community theatre, small film projects, took every opportunity to act and grow my talents. Now, up and coming filmmakers and creatives have wonderful resources and organizations like Film Dayton to help folks to learn and connect with one another to foster film collaborations.
Advice for beginning actors? Read plays and scripts. Do stage plays. Make your own short films with your iPhone and put them on YouTube.
Network, network, network! Collaborate and support your fellow filmmakers. Build a team of creatives who can help you in your own projects.
Remember, it’s a journey, so be patient, be professional and be persistent in working toward your goals.”

scOtt summitt plays characters who are smart, funny and a little quirky. An accomplished film, TV, stage & voiceover actor, scOtt appears in standout co-star and guest star roles on NBC, UPTV Network, Comedy Central, feature films & web series. On- camera, on-microphone, or on-stage, scOtt’s dedication and commitment to his craft, coupled with his focus and lively energy, always leave you wondering what’s next from the guy who’s offbeat, smart, and full of heart. scOtt is a proud member of SAG- AFTRA.

*Editorial Note: That’s not a typo…his name is actually spelled that way (all lower case with a capital O).

Dayton Rotary Announces The 2022 Irv Bieser Peace Award Recipient

September 27, 2022 By Dayton937

The Irv Bieser Peace Award was established by the Rotary Club of Dayton to honor an individual or organization in our community who demonstrates a commitment to peace and conflict resolution that Irv Bieser showed. Among many other community activities, Irv served in the Peace Corps and taught in Liberia where, years later, he was asked to join former President Jimmy Carter’s team to monitor the Presidential elections in that country.

Presenting  this year’s award to The Gem City Market were Ambassador Tony Hall and Rotary Chair of the Day Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice  Gem City Market has joined with multiple organizations around the world, including the Hall Hunger Initiative, to embrace the idea of “PEACE THROUGH FOOD”. Hunger creates conditions for conflict, stunts economic growth and development, and results in unstable communities.

The mission of Gem City Market is to serve, engage, and empower our neighborhoods by providing affordable, high-quality food in a clean and welcoming environment that is worker and community owned.

Co-ops are proven economic drivers and community builders.  Ownership in Gem City Market strengthens members’ commitment to their community and to local partners who share in the collective hope of West Dayton’s resurgence.

The Dayton Rotary and the Dayton Rotary Foundation are proud to have helped jump start the Gem City Market initiative with a $50,000 grant several years ago. They feel they have received a resounding return on their investment.  Accepting the award on behalf of Gem City Market was their President of the Board of Trustees, Amaha Sellassie.

Veleta Jenkins, a former English teacher at Dayton Job Corps and the founder and CEO of Library for Africa was the first recipient of this award.

Warped Wing Brewing Company to Open North of Dayton

September 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Warped Wing Brewing Company, headquartered in the heart of Downtown Dayton, Ohio, is excited to announce plans for a new Brewery and Taproom location in Huber Heights! Planned to open in Spring/Summer 2023, the new location at 6602 Executive Boulevard in Huber Heights will feature a large taproom with outdoor biergarten, warehouse & production space, private event space with small pilot brewing system and food menu focused on smoked foods similar to the Springboro & Mason taprooms. Seating capacity is 127 in the main taproom, 48 in the event space, and 104 in the outdoor biergarten.

“Huber Heights has a great community of craft beer fans. During the pandemic we delivered more beer via our home delivery program to Huber Heights than any other community. We are forever grateful for their support during that difficult time and so opening this new brewery at The Heights means so much to our team” said Nick Bowman, co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing. “Huber Heights is definitely a community on the move and we are very excited to be a part of it” said Bowman.

“We are planning on adding a pilot brewing system at our new location in Huber Heights” said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster at Warped Wing. “The flexibility of having multiple systems allows us more opportunity to experiment and create unique offerings exclusive to our taprooms” said Haggerty.

“We are very excited to continue our partnership with Warped Wing Brewing Company and work with them on their new Huber Heights location” said Jerad Barnett, President & CEO at Synergy & Mills Development. “With the proximity to the growth in northern Huber Heights and the Rose Music Center area as well as fantastic visibility from I-70 and land for additional growth in the future, we believe this is the perfect site for Warped Wing’s fourth location and look forward to beginning construction soon and opening this facility in the spring of 2023.” said Barnett.

In addition to Warped Wing’s vast selection of beers available, the taproom will also serve a variety of beverages including wine, seltzer, hard cider, and spirits with a focus on specialty cocktails as well as non-alcoholic options like housemade sodas.

Construction is set to begin this Fall and is expected to be completed in Spring of 2023. More details to be released as plans for the new Huber Heights location develop.

Auntie Anne’s Debuts New Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost

September 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Auntie Anne’s welcomes fall with the introduction of the all-new Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost with an option to “Make It a Trio” combo.

The new Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost features layers of salty and sweet caramel syrup mixed with Hershey’s frozen chocolate atop a bed of real whipped cream, and finished with a rich, buttery, and sea salted caramel sauce drizzled over whipped cream.

The new Frost can be enjoyed on its own, or you can “Make It a Trio” combo, which includes a Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost paired with Auntie Anne’s Original Pretzel Nuggets and Caramel Dip to get more sweet, more salty, and more caramel in each taste.

To celebrate the new Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost and National Pretzel Month, Auntie Anne’s is dubbing October National Pretzel Delivery Month, where fans can enjoy the Salted Caramel Chocolate Frost, and Auntie Anne’s hot and handmade pretzels and dips, delivered directly to their doorstep.

Additionally, Auntie Anne’s will drop new delivery offers in the Auntie Anne’s Rewards app each week. Auntie Anne’s Rewards members are being advised to stay tuned for details.
