DLM’s Love Cakes Designers Win International Competition!

September 20, 2022 By Dayton937

As a part of the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE®) happening now in Las Vegas, cake designers from around the world competed in Pillsbury’s Creative Cake Decorating Competition. At a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon, Love Cakes by Dorothy Lane Market designers Lee Ann Parsons and Kaytlyn Stanuszek were announced as the grand champions of the multi-day competition and awarded the 21st Pillsbury Bakers’ Plus Grand Champion Trophy.

Six two-person teams from bakeries around the world came to compete, including designers from Quebec, Mexico, and other United States teams representing bakeries in Baton Rouge and Illinois. Lee Ann has been with Love Cakes by DLM, the boutique cake division of Dorothy Lane Market, for seven years. Kaytlyn joined the Love Cakes team just three years ago. Judges evaluated everything from artistry and skill to imagination. Starting on Sunday, the competitors completed cakes live on the exhibit floor, working for several hours both Sunday and Monday. Winners were announced at the award show on Tuesday in each of the four categories: Wedding cake, rolled fondant, buttercream, and hyper-realistic. The Love Cakes team came in first place in the Wedding Cake and Buttercream Cake categories, in addition to being honored for their cumulative points as the overall grand champion.

“I am so very proud! Lee Ann has wanted to participate in this international competition for so long, so her dreams have come true. This is a new experience for Kaytlyn that took her outside of her box, and I just couldn’t be more thrilled for them both,” says Sabrina Fiffe, Love Cakes by DLM manager.

10?’s with Chef Summer Key

September 20, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Summer Key is an American Culinary Federation award-winning certified chef. She started  culinary school at Sinclair and after years of learning and honing her skills, and working with renowned chefs, she started her own catering business, Key Ingredient Catering, located right here in Dayton. Not only does she cater parties and special events, but she also offers private chef services and weekly meal service.. She shares “my  career success is 100% because of the chefs that have pushed me along the way.”
What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?
I love smoking food so probably brisket is my favorite item to cook because it’s not easy and it took a while to get it right. Male chefs often claim to be the best grill masters so that may also be a small part of why I had to perfect it 🙂
What ingredient do you dread?
I don’t really dread making much of anything because I love my job. I would say Oysters are the hardest because of the shucking, but I will make an Oysters Rockefeller in a minute because they are such a crowd pleaser.
What’s your favorite dish to make?
This is the most popular question I am asked. I always say most Professional Chefs should be able to make most things or figure it out with some research. I enjoy making pasta because like smoking meat it is a learned talent that takes practice. My favorite thing to eat is brunch because chefs have to work brunch early in the morning after a late close most of the time. It is normally super busy and we are grouchy. When I get to go out and enjoy it, it feels like cheating or sneaking. A great luxury.
What’s your favorite pig out food?
Ice cream is it,for me.  My guilty pleasure food is old school tuna tetrazzini, cabbage rolls and my mom’s beef and homemade noodles. Ohio girl over here!
What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
If I eat out it’s normally something ethnic that I would not normally make myself. Mixteca and Ginger Spice are my favorites. I like food trucks for this reason as well. Lots of really great ones. I love going to the festivals and getting meatball subs from the Italian fest and gyros with Greek fries from the Greek fest. I remember being pregnant with my son and asking if the person at the admission desk could just let me in for a gyro real quick. “5 minutes” I said . Chefs can make really intricate fancy food but we ” buy” simple food prepared well with real ingredients.
What’s your best advice for home chefs?
Don’t give up. You will get better. If you love something, keep trying to make that recipe. Over and over learning from your mistakes. Write the changes on the recipe so you don’t forget. Share the fun with your family. Kids will eat food they have a say in.
If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
My dad is the biggest one, he died before I became a successful Professional Chef and found my passion. My Grandma Ruth. I come from a big family and she always made sure I had what I needed. My kids so they could enjoy them as well. I cook from my soul every dish is a part of me. Preparing a special meal is my love letter to them. It’s very personal and intentional.
Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
Well if you know me at all then you already know this answer. Chef Anne Kearney and Anthony Head. I love them very much. They both have done so much for me in different ways. Chef Head taught me in school to do more, better, faster. A good cook, cooks. A better cook reads and the best cooks write. He pushed me to join our competition team in culinary school at Sinclair. I won an American Culinary Federation bronze metal for the state of Ohio and became captain then coach. He introduced me to the top chefs in our city doing events for them with him and other students. Holding me accountable for my work still to this day, never letting me give up.
Chef Anne is the best Chef our city has and I wanted to work and learn from her so bad. I jumped at the opportunity as an occasional catering staff then prep cook when someone called off . I worked my way up to the line with a lot of hard work and effort then opening our new restaurant in Tampa named Oak and Ola. Anne taught me so much. Refining my skill, setting high standards and molding me into the strong female chef I am today. She told me once, you will have to work twice as hard as a man in this industry to be seen as equal. I will never forget that and that. It is one of those statements that become a part of you. Mentors are the ticket to your own success.
What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
Even though I never get a full day off I always make time for my son. He has to deal with my schedule so I make sure we go on ‘”adventures” a few times a week. Normally something fun outdoors. Metro Parking it up. Young’s dairy, putt putt golf, swimming  and movies/drive in  theaters are a few. We love the $6 tuesday shows at The Green
Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
I rent kitchen space so that means I get bumped out of my kitchen space if the place I am renting decides to hold an event that day. This has happened to me multiple times. It is so stressful trying to find another space at the last minute. One time this happened to me on Valentine’s day and 2 staff  members quit the same day. Talk about a mini meltdown. As an entrepreneur you have to think outside the box and find a way. I must say I have gotten pretty good at it. Putting out fires is a business owner’s main job. Can’t is not an option anymore.

Wright State Theatre Opens the Season With Agatha Christie’s THE MOUSETRAP

September 20, 2022 By Dayton937

Wright State Theatre opens their 2022-23 Season with Agatha Christie’s iconic murder mystery, The Mousetrap. This classic “Whodunnit” runs in Wright State University’s Festival Playhouse from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. Agatha Christie, the undisputed Queen of the Mystery Genre has crafted a suspense thriller with a surprise twist ending – so please keep the secret! The Mousetrap is the first stage production of Wright State University’s new School of Fine and Performing Arts.

Kathryn Carter and Theo Karras

Kathryn Carter and Theo Karras

Perhaps best known for her novels, Christie wrote more than twenty plays, including three in the 1950s that made her the first female playwright to have three productions running simultaneously in London’s West End. The Mousetrap has gone on to become the longest running play in Theatre history, with 72 years (and counting) in that original production, which is still running in London. This production of The Mousetrap will be the first time Wright State has producing one of Christie’s plays since 1977. This sumptuous production is guaranteed to please avid lovers of mystery stories, from Clue to Knives Out to every television detective series you’ve seen.

Director Jason Podplesky says, “We love being scared! There’s something about these murder mysteries that appeals to our sense of fear. They allow us to deal with these scary things from a safe aesthetic distance. The Mousetrap is really well done; it keeps you intrigued and keeps you on the edge of your seats until the very end. It’s the stuff of legends. There’s also humor in this; a British drawing room comedy sense about it. Comedy and suspense go together like chocolate and peanut butter, don’t they? It’s sort of the one way you can break that tension so you don’t have to have one continuous arc of tension all the way through the play. The Mousetrap sets the formula for all other murder mysteries. It all seems to be right. You get this room of really strange, eccentric characters that seem so disparate from one another. There’s always one with a crazy accent and there’s a dark gloomy one and a proper British one and they come from all parts of the world. And, for whatever reason, they get trapped on a boat, a train or, in this case a Manor house. And then through the play she reveals that, hey they’re not so distant strangers at all. And then there’s always that great scene at the end where the detective unravels all the clues in a beautiful climax. I defy anyone who’s not seen this before to come and pick out the murderer before Christie decides to reveal it to you.” Podplesky will step back into the mystery realm with the Human Race Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Deadline.

Ben Smallwood and Theo Karras

Directed by Cincinnati-based director and actor, Jason Podplesky, The Mousetrap has Scenic Design by guest artist Dick Block (Assoc. Head of Drama, Carnegie Mellon University), Lighting Design by Wright State Professor Matthew Benjamin, costumes by Senior Costume Design student Carrie Wieland, Sound Design by James Dunlap and Properties by John Lavarnway. It is Stage Managed by guest artist Kelly DeLisle.

Buy tickets on line or  they  can be purchased at the Creative Arts Center box office between noon and 4pm Monday-Friday:

Dayton Story Slam Kicks Off 7th Season

September 19, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton Story Slam, which is based on Public Radio’s “The Moth” format, encourage local story tellers to share true stories, on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  This Tuesday, September 20th at 7pm host Bryan Suddith will kick off the season with a story, then draws tellers names randomly from a hat, inviting that person to take the stage and share a five minute story with the audience.

2022 Grand Slam Champion LaTisha with the grand slam tellers.

Just like The Moth, “each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.”

“When you can share from a vulnerable place what is different inside you based on that little event, those are the stories that people grab onto. It goes beyond socioeconomic status, what part of town you’re from, what color you are… The same elements appeal to everyone in the audience,” Suddith said.

Teams of judges chosen from the audience score the 10 highlighted stories. Every StorySLAM produces a StorySLAM winner. In June, the winners from each month are invited back for the Grand Slam and the Grand Champion is crowned.

Tips for Tellers:

  1. Be forewarned. Stories are told, not read.
  2. Have a great first line that sets up the stakes and grabs attention.
  3. Know your story well enough so you can have fun!
  4. Steer clear of meandering endings.
  5. No standup routines please.
  6. No rants.
  7. No essays.

South Park to Stage 1920s Murder Mystery Home Tour

September 19, 2022 By Dayton937

On Saturday, October 1, from 2-6 pm, Historic South Park invites “visiting detectives” to go back in time and help Dayton Police find a killer. “A Prohibition Scandal” is billed as “a guided neighborhood home tour with a twist.” Attendees will be led by the Chief Detective to five historic homes (one of which is rumored to have been a real 1920’s era speakeasy) where they will meet the suspects, witness scenes, ask questions, then meet a local establishment and compare clues over cocktails. Those who crack the case get a chance to win a $100 gift basket filled with swag from South Park and Dayton businesses.

The event — written, directed and acted by South Park residents — is a fundraiser for the neighborhood council, Historic South Park, Inc.  According to co-creators Sarah Dugan and Jeanine Gow, the narrative is inspired by real life in Dayton during the Roaring 20s.

One scene from “A Prohibition Scandal” will take place in the basement if a historic home on Morton Avenue, rumored to have been a 1920’s era speakeasy. It’s one of five homes included on the tour.

Says Sarah, “Our cast of characters include football players from The Dayton Triangles, the original NFL franchise, and suspects inspired by what was popular and newsworthy in Dayton in the 1920s. Besides speakeasies, we’ve taken our cues from vaudeville, spiritualism, glass manufacturing, immigrant communities, quack remedies, and life in the boarding houses that were found everywhere in Dayton at the time.”
So what’s the mystery? A talented but unscrupulous Dayton Triangles quarterback turns up dead and just about everyone is a suspect.

“The tour takes one-and-a-half hours to complete,” says Jeanine, “And we’ve kept the tour groups small. Tours begin at Hope Lutheran Church (500 Hickory Street). There are nine times to choose from, beginning at 2 pm and leaving every half hour with the last tour leaving at 6pm.”

As the tour ends, everyone will be encouraged to gather for a soft or spirited beverage at Wholly Grounds and submit their guess.

HOW TO PLAY DETECTIVE: Wear comfortable shoes! Plan to walk about one and a half miles.
Tickets: $28 at Eventbrite.
Who: You must be 21 years of age or older, since a cocktail is included in the ticket price.
What: “A Prohibition Scandal” is a guided interactive murder mystery event with stops at five beautiful historic homes, ending at a local drinking establishment.
When: Saturday, October 1, from 2-6 pm, tours leave every half hour.
Where: Hope Lutheran Church, 500 Hickory.
