MustardFEST 2022

Hey Foodies…MustardFEST is back like it never left!

On Saturday, September 17, we’ll ring in the ‘King of Condiments’ with the Champion City Wiener Dog Race from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at National Road Commons Park.

Attendees can then head over to Mother Stewart’s Brewery to try Woeber’s award-winning products, listen to Oktoberfest music, sip craft brews throughout Springfield’s DORA, and eat to their heart’s desire from the bevy of food trucks scheduled to attend.

This year’s event will continue through the weekend and close out with its signature Woeber’s Mustard Recipe Cook-Off: B R U N C H Edition on Sunday September 18th, 2022 at Mother Stewart’s Brewery. (See separate listing for more details.)

Brewery & WYSO Celebrate Partnership

Yellow Springs Brewery and WYSO will release the second version of the WYSO-inspired Vox Populi beer at a dance party this Friday, August 16, at the brewery’s Barrel Room.

Radio Basim, host of “Behind the Groove,” will DJ from 7–9 pm, and Chef Dane will be on site from 5–8 pm to prepare dinner. Screen printer Four Ambition will be in the parking lot starting at 6 pm to print T-shirts, with the Vox Populi artwork, that will be available only at the event.

Vox Populi was first released in 2014, as an American Pale Ale. The new batch is a pilsner, brewed with German malt and German and Czech hops, and will be available Friday only on tap (no cans yet).

WYSO Music Director Juliet Fromholt said this long-time partnership with Yellow Springs Brewery formed easily because both organizations are community-minded. “It felt natural to celebrate that,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to combine our talents to gather the community together—and dance!”

On Friday, attendees can also get maps for and information about the musicians playing at Yellow Springs Porchfest, which starts at noon on Saturday. During this free event, local musicians play on the porches, in the front yards, and on the patios of homes and businesses within about a half mile radius of downtown Yellow Springs.

Exhibit Exploring Transformative Innovations in Aerospace at Air Force Museum

“Above and Beyond,” an interactive science exhibition exploring transformative innovations in aerospace, will launch Saturday, Sept. 17 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The 500-square-metre exhibition will offer an unprecedented interactive demonstration of advances in aviation and aerospace, from the first powered flights to the newest innovations on Earth and in space. Flight simulation, immersive theater, touch-table displays, and augmented reality are examples of exhibit technology offering an experiential understanding of the scientific concepts behind flight.

After entering an immersive wraparound theater, visitors can venture into five galleries comprising dozens of interactive displays. Exhibit goers can ride to the edge of space in a simulated space elevator or test their own supersonic fighter-jet design in a virtual high-speed flying competition. A group flying experience with motion-sensing image capture helps visitors sense what it’s like to fly like a bird in a flock, while exploring the forces of flight.

“While we celebrate the U.S. Air Force’s 75th Anniversary with a look at the past, present and future it’s the perfect time to launch ‘Above and Beyond’ at the museum,” said National Museum of the USAF Education Division Chief, Michael Brimmer. “This immersive interactive exhibit is a tremendous way to help spark student interest in what could be possible in the future and encourage them to continue studying the fields of science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM.”

Located in the museum’s 4th building, “Above and Beyond” is free to all visitors and will be open during regular museum hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily from Sept. 17 – Dec.15.

“Above and Beyond” is produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in association with Boeing, in collaboration with NASA and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. In addition, the Air Force Museum Foundation has also partnered with CenterPoint Energy, which in part allows the museum to host free interactive aviation experiences including the “Above and Beyond” exhibit presented by Boeing. Federal endorsement is not implied.

City to invest $400,000 for development at former hospital site

The City of Dayton will invest $400,000 to begin development of a YMCA of Greater Dayton health and wellness facility at the former Good Samaritan Hospital site. The funding to help build a key part of the Northwest Health & Wellness Campus, a $17.5 million development located at 2222 Philadelphia Dr., will be provided through the Dayton Recovery Plan.

The full-service YMCA will complement other health and community organizations with planned operations at the site. As the first build at the former hospital site, it will bring important services and desired amenities to Northwest Dayton.

The Dayton Recovery Plan investment supports community-driven projects by partners and community groups offering programs and services serving areas hardest hit by the COVID pandemic.

“We are very happy to support the Northwest Health & Wellness campus,” said Dayton Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr. “This investment will leverage public and private investments that will lead to valuable resources for area residents, as well as services addressing economic disparities, such as job training, homebuyer education, and financial literacy. All of these became even more needed during the COVID pandemic.”

The YMCA of Greater Dayton Foundation, LLC, will utilize this funding to purchase mechanical, electrical and design services, infrastructure and materials costs, and other pre-construction services to support construction.

The YMCA will occupy the 50,000-sq.-ft. Northwest Health & Wellness Campus with partners Premier Health, Wright State University, County Corp, CareSource, and Goodwill. The Northwest Health & Wellness Campus will occupy approximately five acres of the former hospital site; an additional eight acres are under consideration for potential redevelopment.

“We have been supporting the development of the Good Sam site for many years,” said City Manager Shelley Dickstein. “This investment will help drive economic vitality, create jobs and leverage other investments in the area to promote healthy living. It will also catalyze additional positive activity in Northwest Dayton. We are proud to lend our support to this important project.”

For more than 15 years, the City of Dayton, Premier Health, CityWide Development and others worked together in the neighborhoods surrounding Good Samaritan Hospital in Northwest Dayton. The work, known as the Phoenix Project, included investments of more than $20 million that leveraged an additional $45 million in healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure improvements and new amenities.

After the closing of Good Samaritan Hospital, a new initiative managed by CityWide Development called PhoenixNext was conducted from early 2018 through early 2019 to create a vision for re-use of the 13-acre former hospital site and investment in the Phoenix Project area neighborhoods.

TEDxDayton Ten Year Celebration Announced

TEDxDayton is back in-person for a 10-year celebration that will be TEDxDayton’s biggest event yet, featuring a full slate of locally connected speakers who will share their “ideas worth spreading” on topics ranging across science, education, design, technology, art, history, culture and more. The day will also include performances by artists, dancers, and musicians from the Dayton area, along with surprise announcements and experiences. This 10-year celebration of TEDxDayton is one not to miss.

Happening at the Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton on Friday, October 14, 2022.The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The afternoon’s program will include two intermissions with snacks and beverages along with lunch included.

Tickets are $53 per person and can be obtained online now.

“Get your tickets fast, as this event is expected to sell out quickly, and the 10-year celebration is not one to be missed,” said Luther Palmer, who is co-chairing the event. Cory Owen, co-chair, explained further, “We are excited to bring our Signature Event back in-person at the gorgeous Victoria, and we know there are a lot of fans who have been with us year after year. Folks look forward to this.”

“This year’s TEDxDayton lineup is jam-packed with speakers from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and professions. What they have in common is passion and a desire to connect with you and with all our Dayton neighbors to share ideas worth spreading. Chipotle Is Testing a New Beef Option: Garlic Guajillo Steak

Chipotle is unveiling a new protein and it promises to be the brand’s most flavorful yet. The Garlic Guajillo Steak will join Chipotle’s menu for a limited time at every Chipotle restaurant nationwide (and in Canada) beginning on September 14th and features tender cuts of steak peppered with a hefty helping of garlic, guajillo peppers, and cilantro. The guajillo pepper is a beloved pepper used in Mexican cuisine. It is the dried form of the mirasol chili pepper, second in popularity only to the ancho, offering sweet flavor and mild-medium heat.

To celebrate the arrival of the new protein, Chipotle is offering a $0 delivery fee offer on all Garlic Guajillo Steak orders placed through the Chipotle app and Chipotle.com from September 17 through September 25, 2022.

Bach Society Names New Music Director

After working closely with our Board of Directors and our Chorus to evaluate potential candidates, we are delighted to introduce Dr. David Crean as the Bach Society’s new Music Director!!

Dr. Crean enjoys a multifaceted career as a conductor, teacher, recitalist, church musician, and radio personality.

Since February 2017, he has been the Midday Host and Music Director at Discover Classical WDPR, Dayton’s only full-time classical radio station. An active church musician since age 15, he also currently serves as Organist and Music director at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Dayton.

Our new Music Director has concertized as an organist throughout the United States and completed two concert tours of Australia, where he gave several Australian premieres and performed on historic instruments. Other recent highlights include the opening recital of WQXR’s “Bachstock” marathon, the Poulenc organ concerto with the Bach Society of Dayton, solo recitals at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and St. Thomas Fifth Ave. in New York, and several programs for American Guild of Organists (AGO) chapters.

Dr. Crean has taught organ, harpsichord, and music theory at Wright State University since 2014 and has held adjunct positions at Wittenberg University, The Juilliard School, and The University of Iowa. He also serves as the Dean of the Dayton, OH chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

A native of New York, Dr. Crean received his D.M.A. from The Juilliard School, where he was the 2014 recipient of the Richard F. French Doctoral Prize for outstanding research in a dissertation. He also holds degrees from Oberlin College/Conservatory and The University of Iowa.
