Flag Day – Facts About Our American Flag

Today the American flag turns 246.  Here are some fun facts and common misconceptions about the iconic emblem.

In 1916 Pres. Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 the U.S. Congress permanently established the date as National Flag Day. Although Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday. Each year the U.S. president delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and all Americans are encouraged to fly U.S. flags during that week.

It’s safe to say that most Americans know that the flag hanging in their home has 50 stars representing the 50 U.S. states. You probably also know that it has 13 stripes, but the reason why is a little less self-evident.

The original flag, created in 1776, was designed with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the 13 American colonies. Since then, there have been 27 versions of the American flag, according to the National Flag Foundation. The red represents valor and bravery; white represents purity and innocence; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Federal law states that the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. However, you can display the flag for all 24 hours if you use lighting to ensure that it can be seen in the dark, the National Flag Foundation says.

According to U.S. Code, you should never let the flag touch the ground or water. The flag is often flown at half-staff during periods of mourning or national days of remembrance. A few other notable rules say you should never: display a flag upside down (except during times of dire distress or danger); carry it flat or horizontally; or use it as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.

Although many consider burning the flag a sign of disrespect, that’s not always the case. In fact, the National Flag Foundation notes that this is actually the preferred way to dispose of an American flag that is damaged or worn beyond repair. The U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The image of Buzz Aldrin on the moon with an American flag is one of the most iconic photos in American history. The U.S. planted the first flag on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Since then, five more U.S. flags have been planted on the moon during subsequent missions.

Betsy Ross is a phony

Betsy Ross is considered an American hero, known for creating the American flag.

The story says that she lobbied Gen. George Washington to change the design, giving us the historic mock-up we’ve come to know and love.

The truth is there is ZERO proof that this ever happened, although it is taught to elementary school children as history. Ross is more in line with American mythic legends Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed than historic figures like Clara Barton or Benjamin Franklin.

When Alaska and Hawaii become states 49 and 50, President Eisenhower received thousands of ideas for an updated flag. Robert G. Heft, a 17-year old high school student from Ohio, submitted his version that he created for a class project, and it was accepted and remains in use today. Can you believe that Robert got a B- on his project?

In 1958, there was a contest to come up with a new flag that represented how the country had grown. Then-17-year-old Robert G. Heft of Lancaster, Ohio, submitted a design to the contest, which President Dwight Eisenhower chose from over 1,500 other submissions.

Marc Leepson, author of “Old Glory, Flag: An American Biography,” wrote, “Every historical study has come to the same conclusion. There’s no good historical evidence that she did. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t. There’s simply a lack of documentation. Most historians believe the story is apocryphal.”

President Woodrow Wilson, in a ceremony recognizing the first national observance of Flag Day, was asked about his thoughts on Ross.

He replied, “Would that it were true!”

Turns out Betsy Ross is the biggest lie your kindergarten teacher ever told you (except that Bubbles the class gerbil was moving to a farm upstate).

After a tragedy like September 11th, 2001, or a death like Abraham Lincoln, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days as a representation of the whole nation being in a state of mourning  It’s called ‘half staff’ on land, and ‘half mast’ on a ship.

Before the flag’s current 50-star design, there were a number of versions, some wackier than others.

The current designer got a B-minus for his idea

The designer of our current flag was a 17-year-old Boy Scout named Robert Heft. What did this talented teen get in return for creating the iconic look? A grade of B-minus.

Heft’s teacher asked students at Lancaster High School in Ohioto design a new 50-star flag, after Hawaii and Alaska joined the Union. Robert arranged it with five rows of six stars and four rows of five stars, spending 12 and a half hours sewing the flag.

His teacher said the design was unoriginal and gave him the mediocre grade, but offered to raise it to an A if the design was accepted nationally. So Robert wrote to his congressman and the rest is history.

And when his flag was adopted on July 4, 1960, his teacher changed his grade to an A.

Old Glory belonged to a sea captain

Old Glory is one of the most popular nicknames for the flag, along with the Stars and Stripes and the Red, White and Blue. The phrase is not just a generic nickname; it is actually the name of a specific flag, a 17-foot by 10-foot banner that still hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

9 Juneteenth Celebrations in the Miami Valley

Juneteenth commemorates the date of June 19, 1865, when Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, the last stop on their journey through Texas, where they delivered the news firsthand to enslaved people that they were free. They were delivering this news two months after the enslaved should have been freed following the surrender of the Confederate Army on April 9, 1865, the event that ended the Civil War. Rather than respond in a retaliatory manner, the formerly enslaved of Texas organized public celebrations centered on food and music.

Juneteenth became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021. 

 

Troy’s Juneteenth Opening Celebration

The Paisha Thomas Quintet will help launch Troy’s Juneteenth opening celebrations on June 16, 2023 at 6:30 pm. Joining Paisha will be Dwight Bailey, bass; Brett Burleson, guitar; Nate Parker on drums and David Swank on keys. Paisha’s songs tell of her experiences as a black woman in Ohio and celebrate the long history of her family here in the Miami Valley region. She is a descendant of the Randolph Freed People who came to our area as free citizens in 1846 and settled in Troy, Piqua and the surrounding areas. She will be sharing her songs and her stories of local relevance and power.

Juneteenth Celebration 2023

The Dayton, Ohio Juneteenth Celebration is a festive and educational event that will take place on June 17th from 9 am to dusk at Liberation Park.
Formerly known as Broadway Park, Liberation Park is located on the corner of N. Boardway St. and Superior Ave. The park will be transformed into a lively and welcoming atmosphere where people of all ages can come together to celebrate the historical significance of Juneteenth. One of the main highlights of the Dayton Juneteenth Celebration is the live music.

Attendees will be able to enjoy performances from local musicians and artists throughout the day. In addition to the music, there will be vending booths set up where vendors will be selling a variety of goods, such as clothing, jewelry, and other merchandise.

Food is also an important part of the Juneteenth Celebration. The event will feature a diverse range of food options, including traditional African-American cuisine and other delicious dishes. In addition to the entertainment and food, the Dayton Juneteenth Celebration will also offer educational opportunities. Attendees will have the chance to learn about the history of Juneteenth, which marks the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom. The event will provide a space for community members to come together and honor the significance of this historical moment.

The celebration will kick off with a parade starting from 3rd and Boardway. The parade will showcase a variety of community groups, organizations, and individuals who will come together to commemorate the day.

2023 Yellow Springs Juneteenth Celebration

Activities will begin at 10:30 a.m., with a gathering outside Yellow Springs High School, for a walk that will begin at 11 a.m. and proceed through the village past several sites of significance in the Black history of Yellow Springs.

The walk will conclude on the grounds of Mills Lawn Elementary School, where the 2023 Juneteenth program will take place from noon–1:30 p.m. The program will include reflections on the meaning of Juneteenth, music by the World House Choir and by Tronee Threat, storytelling and re-enactments of accounts of enslavement and freedom. Games and other activities for children will be offered throughout the afternoon. Those attending the program are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and lunches. Food trucks also will be available. Following the program, Radio Basim will provide music until 3 p.m.

A Juneteenth Walk will begin at 3 p.m. at Hobart (ITW) Food Equipment Group.

The walk will be led by the T.R.S.S. Drum Corps and will proceed to McKaig and Race Park where the Juneteenth festivities will be underway.

Activities will include a cookout, games and music. All Juneteenth activities are free. The Juneteenth events are the work of the Juneteenth Committee, I.D.E.A Troy and the Troy Human Relations Council.   Free

Juneteenth Music Festival

The second annual Juneteenth Music Festival will be held from 5-10 p.m. at the Eichelberger Amphitheater, Huber Heights. Parking and admission into the festival is free.

Musical acts include some of Dayton’s more well-known artists: Chay Buddah & Hot2Def, Ric Sexton & Friends, and headlining the festival, the Dayton Funk All-Stars. Several Black-owned food trucks will serve a variety of soul food cuisine, and Black-owned business vendors will also be on hand. The festival will include a beer and wine garden sponsored by the Huber Heights Optimist Club and Huber Heights Performing Arts. The beer and wine garden and several of the food and merchandise vendors will have a cash-only option for payment. Community members are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets.   Free

New Expanded DORA Takes Effect June 14th!

DORA stands for “Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area.” A DORA is a space that allows patrons 21 years and older to purchase alcoholic beverages in a designated cup from a permitted establishment and carry those beverages within the defined boundary. As of June 14th Dayton’s DORA  is roughly bounded by Wilkinson Street to the west (with Main Street as the boundary south of Sixth Street), RiverScape MetroPark and the Great Miami River to the north (with First Street as the boundary east of Webster Street), Keowee Street to the east (with Webster Street as the boundary north of First Street), and Sixth Street to the south (with some areas stretching as far south as Washington Street and Jones/Bainbridge Street). Boundaries of the DORA will be clearly marked with signs notifying guests when they enter or leave the defined area.

 

You can take your to-go beverage around the designated DORA, either while relaxing outdoors, or while you’re shopping, look for the DORA stickers on the entrances of participating retailers, and sip while you shop. Be sure to finish your DORA beverage before you enter another bar or restaurant.  Only one DORA cup/beverage is permitted at a time per patron. Patrons may not enter a participating DORA business with a DORA beverage purchased elsewhere

The Downtown Dayton DORA is in effect from noon until midnight 7 days a week.
The Chief of Police will suspend DORA on St. Patrick’s Day, and may suspend DORA for other designated special events.

Clothes That Work Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Mobile Unit

Clothes That Wore opened for business in the Montgomery County Job Center on June 12, 1998. I was amongst the first class of volunteers to go through training to become personal shoppers for the women that were referred to us by partners to provide interview and workplace-appropriate clothing to single mothers who were affected by welfare reform in the 1990s.  In July 2002, CTW hired their first Executive Director, Kym Yahn, a former Board member and one of the founding mothers. In that same year they served their 3,000th client. 

In an effort to secure new revenue streams for CTW, the Boutique opened in 2005, selling donated clothing that was not interview appropriate. In 2008, Clothes That work celebrated their 10-year anniversary. By this time they had served 12,000 clients in the Greater Dayton area. CTW also moved to a larger suite in the job center in order to increase operational effectiveness and efficiency. Five years later, Clothes That Work celebrated their 15 year milestone in 2013 and earned the Better Business Bureau’s  Eclipse Integrity Award.  

In 2018, Cindy Garner became the 5th Executive Director for Clothes That Work during the organization’s 20th Anniversary.  Cindy’s leadership helped them navigate virtual fundraisers through covid and for the first time ever, grow the staff and launch a capital campaign to think beyond their four walls. 

So today on  the 25th Anniversary Celebration for Clothes That Work I’m still so proud of this organization thatlives its mission daily: to clothe, educate, and empower individuals to prepare them for employment success.  CTW has now impacted more than 39,000 women, men and independent teens in our community. And with the addition of the mobile unit they debuted at today’s celebration, its so great to know that CTW will continue help job seekers make great first impressions and present themselves confidently with their clothing new to them!

Ohioans Can Fish Without A License This Weekend

On June 17-18, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife is hosting its annual free fishing days. It’s the only weekend of the year on which residents 16 and older can fish without a license. Anglers under 16 can fish for free year-round. During this weekend, Ohio residents can fish for free in any of Ohio’s public waters, including those of Lake Erie and the Ohio River. All other fishing regulations, size limits, and bag limits apply.

Before and after the weekend, residents age 16 and older who want to fish are required to purchase a license and be prepared to show it when requested. Remember to check the 2022-2023 Fishing Regulations before you go.

Sculptures on the Square in Troy Kicks Off June 16th

Troy Main Street’s Sculptures on the Square is a biennial exhibition that takes place on the sidewalks of downtown Troy!

In the summer of 2023 sculptures that reflect the theme, “Wind and Water” will be scattered throughout downtown Troy for visitors and community members to enjoy.

There will also be several public arts activities that will take place throughout the summer and local artwork will be displayed in many of our downtown businesses.

Over the years, a wide collection of artwork has been displayed downtown through the Sculptures on the Square exhibit. The exhibit has featured sculpture artist Seward Johnson several times. Exhibitions have also included engaging local artists and community groups to paint fiberglass biplanes or to create a door sculpture representing their local group or organization. In 2015, the exhibit featured a 31-foot sculpture of President Abraham Lincoln, also created by Seward Johnson. In 2017, the exhibit displayed 30 colorful steel bicycles created by artist Gilberto Aceves. In 2021 Troy Main Street switched gears and reached out to artists from all over the country to submit a sculpture that represented the theme “Taking Flight,” and 20 sculptures were displayed.

This years exhibition will kick off on Friday, June 16th, with the Sculptures on the Square Opening Celebration. The event will take place at The Rec in downtown Troy and additional activities centered around the theme “Wind and Water” will be happening on Courthouse Plaza that evening.

The schedule for the Opening Celebration is as follows:

  • 5:00 p.m. – Opening Celebration at The Rec
  • 6:00–7:30 p.m. – Live Music by Giana Allen on Courthouse Plaza
  • 6:00–8:00 p.m. – Courthouse Plaza Activities including Balloon boats, watercolor painting, Balloon Man, and Professor Bubbles

Call for Art Wraps Round 2

The Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP) is teaming up with The Contemporary Dayton and City of Dayton to enliven downtown streetscapes with ArtWraps 2.0 designed by local artists of all ages and levels on targeted utility boxes.

Selected designs will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around the boxes by a third-party design fabricator. The intent of the project is to beautify the utility boxes and give area artists an opportunity to enliven the public realm. Up to 15 artists will be chosen for this second round of ArtWraps. Each selected artist will be awarded $500 for their design.

All ages and levels are welcome to apply. Children under 18 must have a guardian sign their application.  Artists/teams living within a 50-mile radius of Dayton, OH are eligible for this project. Submission deadline is June 30, 2023. Winning designers will be notified the week of July 14th and the artwork will be unveiled Aug 4th-5t, during   Art in the City.

Canal Music Fest

The 2023 Canal Music Fest will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 6:00 p.m., at City Park, in Tipp City, Ohio. Food and beverages will be available beginning at 5:00 p.m. Vendors on site will be Buckeye Burgers, Nou Street Food, Pa’s Pork, Raging Bull Wood Fired Pizza, Susie’s Big Dipper, Kona Ice and Bolasko’s Concessions. Skull Dollz Face Painters will also on site.
Join us for a night of music featuring “Shot Through the Heart—The Bon Jovi Experience,” local favorite “Stranger” and hometown fav “znels.”
The Canal Music Fest is free and open to the public. No coolers permitted. Join us on June 10 and bring your lawn chair or blanket.
